Slightly disappointed.....
I love the Resistance franchise and oved R1 and R2 equally for different reasons. The first game had flaws but also had charm as the game seemed to improve as the the dev team got to grips with the PS3 as a device and this showed in the game itself, plus it featured places in the UK like my old stomping ground Brixton!! R2 just took it to a whole new level!! The graphics and HUGENESS of the some of the enemies just blew you away. Yeah it was a bit movie like and lacked the grittiness of the R1 but it was just superb on every level. Both games had a unique and distinct feel to them. So of course I was ultra excited that R3 would take things to a whole new dimension all together!! Expectations to high? Definiately.
Its not to say that R3 is a bad game its not its great. But I'm just not feeling it this time. Visually I honestly think its a step back. The graphics don't look to hot at times with lots of jagged edges and pixel fuzz. There's almost a look of a top end Ps2 game at times. The visuals just don't draw you in like R2 did. The gameplay is solid and killing the Chims always feels good. New'ish weapons feel good but it just feels like it lacks something. It almost feels like another dev team were involved and that it lacks the atmos and feel of the previous games. The 3D aspect doesn't work that well either and the animated cut scenes look like Infamous 2. The introduction of a new character didn't really grab me and nor did his back story. In fact I still struggle with the concept that these brainless, grunting, snarling kill hungry predators are able to engineer and develop such high tech weapon, space ships and other milirary super structures!!!
As I said I loved the Resistance series but this wasn't the final product/game I was expecting the franchise to end with. R3 is fun to play and there are lots of really nice touches but it just feel like the huge mind blowing eyegasm of game that we should have got. There are better looking and better playing games out there and thats a shame. As R3 should sit up there with the MW2, Battlefield 2, Killzone 3's of this world and it doesn't. It sits alongside World at War and alike, good but defiantely not great,
Anyone new to the series I recommend R2 as the standout game of the franchise followed by R1 and then R3.
