One of the best online WWII shooters out there.

User Rating: 8.6 | Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory PC
Enemy Territory should have had a singleplayer campaign and the multiplayer. Unfortunately, Activision cancelled the singleplayer project, and turned ET into a stand-alone multiplayer game. It’s free to download, so it got popular in no time, and still has thousands of players online.

Those of you who have played the original game – Return to Castle Wolfenstein – know what the game is all about. It’s a first person World War II shooter. The game splits players into two teams – Axis (the Germans), and Allies (the Americans). One of the teams has to destroy one or more objectives to succeed. Most of the time the ones that have to do it are the Allies, but sometimes it can be Axis. Objective (that’s how it’s called) isn’t the only gametype. The Campaign is almost the same as Objective. The difference is that you’ll be able to play multiple maps in a row. The LMS (Last Man Standing) is a self-explanatory – the one who survives makes his team win. Lastly, there’s Stopwatch. It’s like Objective, but it switches the teams every round.

When you choose a team, you get to choose a class. You can either be a Field Ops, a Covert Ops, a Medic, a Soldier or an Engineer. Each class has different equipments. Medics get syringes and health packs to heal themselves and their teammates. Field Ops can supply their teammates with ammo packs, and call in artillery. Covert Ops are the stealthy ones – they can disguise as enemies by taking dead ones’ uniforms. They also have silenced pistols, and can drop electronic charges. Engineers are the most important in the game, since they are the only ones that can destroy the objectives. They can plant mines and dynamite, repair broken things like MG42s or Tanks. They’ve also more grenades. Soldiers have no special gadgets, but they can choose from a bigger variety of weapons. They are good for defending entry points, but not good at fights where both teams meet, because they cause the most teamkills there.

Now, a little about the weapons. You get a knife, a pistol, one primary weapon, and grenades (the rest are class-specific gadgets). You’ll get different gun models, depending on the team you’re in. For example, Axis get a Luger as the secondary weapon, and Allies get the Colt; Axis get HandStiel Grenades while Allies get Pineapple Grenades. The Axis main weapon is the MP40, and the Allies’ is Thompson. What do I mean by “main weapon” – you get it by choosing most of the classes, except “Covert Ops”. Like I said before, the Soldiers get to choose from a bigger variety of weapons. They get either the “main weapon” – MP40 or Thompson, the Panzerfaust (bazooka) the flamethrower, the MG42, or the Mortar. Covert Ops have some primary weapons, too. They can choose either the FG42, the K43, or the Sten.

Teamwork is essential in this game. You can go alone, but it’s much harder. If you’ve a Covert Ops in your team, he should go somewhere he sees the whole area, so he can provide cover. Also, have a couple of medics nearby so they can heal injured friendlies. These are only a few examples. Your main task in most of the maps is to secure the engineers so they can destroy objectives (of course, if you’re not the one). As soon as the TNT is planted, guard the area so the enemies don’t come and diffuse it.

There are six maps in Enemy Territory. You will get to destroy a Fuel Dump near Germany, two AA guns in Africa, two radars in Sweden, and more. Keep in mind, though, that these are only the official maps – they came with the game. There are hundreds of maps available to download. Some are maps with objectives, some are just for fun, i.e., the Hard Jump maps.

Each player has a rank in this game – this is a new feature to Wolfenstein. At first, you’re a Private / Shutze (depending on the team). As you improve, you get a higher rank. There are three bars in the heads-up display. They show your skills. For example, if you are a Medic, the bars represent your Medic, Battle Sense, and Light Weapons skills. Kill many foes with a gun, and you’ll improve your Light Weapons skill; revive/heal your teammates, and in time, you’ll improve your Medic Skill… Well, you get the point… What are ranks for? By improving a specific skill, you get a reward. Let’s say – you’ve reached level 1 of the light weapons skill – now you’ll be able to reload your weapon faster! If you switch a class or team while in-game, you won’t lose any skills.

What about communication? It’s all the same – you can chat or use the quick-chat. The Quick-Chat plays a message depending on which buttons you press. Press V, 1, and 4, and you’ll say “You’re Welcome!” to your team. This is not the only message, of course. There are many more, like “Oops!”, “Affirmative”, “Bomb Defused”, etc.

Wolfenstein is a very intense game. You’ll love it – especially if you’re a WWII games fan. Give it a try – it’s FREE!
