A pretty generic FPS but a pretty good one too.
Wolfenstein 3D Set a new standard for how games could be played by introducing the First Person Shooter genre. This game also layed the foundation for another id software project...DOOM.
On to the review.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein is set during World War 2. You are B.J. Blazkowicz, sent back to Castle Wolfenstein (and various other locations) to defeat the Nazis.
There is only one game mode on Return to Castle Wolfenstein and that is the single player. This is a bit of a let down as some form of multiplayer would have been really cool.
The game is made up of 6 episodes with a varied amount of levels in each. To complete each level you must first do the objectives. The range from collecting documents to defeating bosses. They get a bit repetitve but it's not that bad. There is a decent variety of weapons from Pistols and rifles to machine guns and grenades. These are all based on real WW 2 weapons
Like in Wolfenstein 3D, there are treasures scattered throughout the levels. Collecting these earns you points so you can upgrade different things like health, ammo and armour.
Each episode offers a decent challenge, even on the easiest difficulty some levels require a few attempts to clear.
The controls in this game are nicely mapped out and are very responsive. Movement and looking around are done with the analog sticks. R1 and R2 are used to attack with L1 and L2 for crouching and jumping. The face buttons are for opening doors and switching weapons and the D-pad is used for inventory.
Wolfenstein isn't a visually stunning game but the graphics aren't too bad.
The majority of the environments are very detailed but characters textures are quite bland. I've noticed the frame rate drop a bit when the action picks up but this is only minor and doesn't really happen much. The weapons look pretty cool as does the explosions and other effects.
Wolfenstein has some good music that plays during the levels. It starts out quiet but picks up as the action intensifies. The sound effects are good too, as are the voice overs.
Overall This is a great game. If you are a fan of Wolfenstein or id Software in general you should definately pick this up. It's quite cheap now and offers a good challenge. The only let down is the lack of multiplayer but the singleplayer makes up for it.
