Borderlands Movie Review - Generic And Disposable

The long-gestating adaptation of Borderlands is a pretty unpleasant experience.

We're in a new era, one in which video game adaptations are seen as just as likely to be good as any other nerdy thing. Whereas many of us used to assume a video game movie would undoubtedly suck, at this point there have been enough good ones that the conventional wisdom has changed. Despite that general shift, the Borderlands movie feels more like a product of the old era--when most game adaptations were generic, disposable action movies at best, and frequently something worse than that. And "generic" and "disposable" is exactly what Borderlands is.

Borderlands, from Hostel director Eli Roth, is an adaptation of the sprawling game franchise set on Pandora, a hostile, desert planet full of corporations and fortune hunters trying to break into a mythical ancient vault that's allegedly full of all sorts of amazing technology. Enter Lilith (Cate Blanchett, delivering her worst American accent), who's been hired by a man called Atlas (Edgar Ramirez) to find his kidnapped daughter on Pandora. There's a catch, of course--the daughter is Tiny Tina (Arianna Greenblatt), and she's more his creation than his actual daughter, since she was engineered from the blood of ancient aliens for the purpose of opening the vault. And she wasn't kidnapped--the Atlas soldier Roland (Kevin Hart) rescued her from her captivity.

It's not long before Lilith catches up to them and shortly after, they're all attacked by Atlas soldiers. Lilith then has to team up with Roland, Tina, their sympathetic psycho bandit pal, the quirky scientist Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), and the comic relief robot Claptrap to survive and find the vault themselves.

Let's talk about Claptrap, who is probably the most iconic character from the games. The video game version of Claptrap was originally voiced by former developer at Gearbox, David Eddings, who was replaced with a soundalike in Borderlands 3. But instead of getting somebody who sounds like Claptrap, the movie has Jack Black voice the part--and it's awful. For a few minutes near the beginning of the movie, I was kinda getting into its vibe, but as soon as Claptrap introduced himself to Lilith, the whole thing felt doomed.

It's hard to say what the fatal flaw is in Black's version of Claptrap--perhaps it's that he is completely unable to match Claptrap's established cadence or tone, and so he plays more like a new, annoying Star Wars droid. But having him there turns the whole movie askew, especially since he gets nearly all the joke attempts.

That's a weird thing to say about a movie that stars Kevin Hart, but somehow it's true. Borderlands is not a movie where Hart will grate with incessant jokes, because he hardly makes any. Hart plays Roland as a dry-witted action hero, and he's pretty good at that when he's allowed to be, but it feels like most of his key scenes are missing. Maybe this is a side effect of the movie's PG-13 rating--the games are rated M and have plenty of blood and swearing, and Borderlands so often feels like watching the basic cable edit of something R-rated. And that smoothed-down feeling contributes to one of the film's other biggest issues.

Borderlands comes in at a very brief 102 minutes in length, which you might be tempted to reflexively celebrate in our current landscape of hella long movies. But there's a reason longer movies are en vogue--more time allows for more depth, and depth is what Borderlands is missing the most. But that's what happens sometimes when a movie spends four years in post-production being repeatedly reworked--over time, everything gets sanded down into nothingness.

It's frustrating to see from a filmmaker like Eli Roth, who often gets to act as an auteur with his horror films, like last year's Thanksgiving. But just as often in recent years, he's making stuff like this. And The House With a Clock in Its Walls. And his remake of Death Wish. In short, anonymous studio jobber work that isn't very good and has no real authorship. Borderlands, likewise, is generic, mid-budget CGI slop that looks like a rather cheap episode of The Mandalorian much of the time. And after years of re-editing and a round of reshoots by a different filmmaker, there's not much filmmaking craft left on display.

And the cast, unfortunately, isn't able to help much. Blanchett is putting in some effort, but her American accent is not great--her occasional narration can be especially obnoxious to listen to because of that. But she's not alone in that, since none of the adult stars make much of an impression in Borderlands. The real star here is Greenblatt as Tiny Tina. Tina fades into the background as the movie goes on, sadly, but when she is the focus, Greenblatt is good enough in the part that she's one of the few aspects of Borderlands worth remembering.

But hey, at least there is something worth remembering. For most of its length, Borderlands is just unremarkable, the sort of thing that fades from the mind so quickly that it's actually difficult to dislike it with any real intensity. Aside from Jack Black's upsetting new version of Claptrap, anyway.

The Good

  • Ariana Greenblatt is a fun Tiny Tina

The Bad

  • Generic CGI action slop
  • Jack Black's version of Claptrap is a disaster
  • Feels like the edited-for-TV version of the movie

Yeah, we all saw this coming. We all criticized the casting and questioned what we've seen on the trailer, but they still went with it.

They fucked up with the casting so hard that I never will get to the script or direction.

I'm still salty over Deadpool and Wolverine getting a 4 but then again, the critics didn't exactly thrive from the viewer opinion who actually paid for a ticket.

@s9fx55fe77lam: if you don’t think politics and ideology plays a role in reviews here, you have not been paying attention. The civil war and twisters reviews are glaring examples. However, I agree with you in that the site allows for comments that have differing views and even allows for criticism of their site/reviews. Something you won’t find somewhere like YouTube comments.

@plustwenty: August 10, 2024 - Thank you for your comments. To be honest I may have missed some of the reviews that you are referring to. However, while I do look over the daily gamespot newsletters. I don't always read the reviews, especially if I have no interest in the films or TV series they are reviewing in those issues. I can only reflect on what I have experienced here. Trust me.. I'm not a shill for gamespot😏, I just appreciate it for what it offers me. 😊 I agree with you, there are a lot of websites that don't have the positive guidelines that gamespot's forum offers. Stay well.

August 9, 2024- I would like to express my appreciation of this forum provided by gamespot. I don't use what I have come to call "Unsocial media", because of the vitriol, anger, disrespect, and aggressive behavior. I have found this forum to be generally polite, informative, and friendly. There are of course somewhat "heated"exchanges but that is to be expected and I think the Moderators do a good job of "policing". In my opinion, real democracy is the freedom to exchange ideas and opinions without the fear of being "cancelled" "doxed" and/or violently attacked. I wish the general public had, and used more forums like this one. Stay well all, and, thank you.😊

August 8, 2024 - It warms my heart and makes me extremely happy to see so many people concentrating on what matters in entertainment, and not political and/or social beliefs. We pay money to various cable, satellite, and streaming services to see quality films and TV series. Not Tax credit productions and/or productions paid to include political and/or social agendas. We just want to be entertained. We deserve it, because we pay for it, and probably more than we should. I understand that businesses have to make money, but only if they offer good products and services. Otherwise, they force people to vote with their wallets, and I am sooo glad to see so many of those people in this forum.Stay well all, and thank you.😊

@mogan:

August 9, 2024 - To answer your question directly. I have seen the name of a couple of large companies that make contributions to production companies that are willing to include certain things related to political and social agendas. This is why companies like Disney can accept bad box office receipts because some of their production costs are offset by the types of contributions that I have mentioned. It is no secret that these companies exist. You can discount my assertions because of my bad memory. I can say for an example a guy hit another guy with his car intentionally, and his name was reported. The fact that I can't remember the name of the guy driving the car. Doesn't mean that it didn't happen, or that the guy wasn't guilty. Before I wrote this response, I did a quick search for "What companies provide funds for political and social agendas", on DuckDuckGo because a certain search engine whose name begins with the letter "G" has been proven to to be "unreliable" when it comes to certain kinds of searches. If you are really interested. I suggest that you try that search yourself, maybe trying different search engines. I "cast a wide net" for information. I listen to all voices and opinions to get an understanding of what may, or may not be true. Sadly, most people think they are informed because they exist in a "bubble" that only reinforces their personal beliefs. Stay well.

@mogan: Tax breaks in many countries that's who. It's just like DEI hire tax breaks. Companies pay less in taxes so long as they meet X criteria. It's why "Diversity hire" is a thing.

@ezio899: I'm aware of tax credits for hiring from specific minority groups, but that's not quite the same thing as being paid to push a specific political message in a movie. Which is what the OP is saying happens. I'm interested to know who is paying to push what message in Borderlands.

I have not played Borderlands a lot but they seem kind of fun and interesting, but the movie just seems like it is all about the action, and no interesting plot. Maybe i should check out The last of us or Fallout instead, i have not watched either one of them yet. But the Last of Us especally got nice reviews.

It sounds like a movie which is better to wait for the blu ray version of..or wait until it gets on one of the streaming services. (But which streaming service has rights to it?)

I don't get why they picked someone who looks older than my grandma for Lilith, and someone who looks older than my deceased grand-grandma for Tannis. I know all the characters have been uglified since 3, but when your movie is called "Borderlands", it makes me think of a movie that mostly goes back to the roots of the first game, and Lilith was very attractive in that game, it's not even a question. Surface level analysis I know, but if you can't get the basics right, it says a lot about the rest.

Movies succeed or fail starting with the head writer and director.

Since both are Eli Roth, a 0% RT score is as predictable as death and taxes.

@Akriel_Boulve: August 8, 2024 - Aha.. you get it! All of the.. I'll just call them "bad/unprofitable box office" movies, and TV series for that matter. Get fantastic tax breaks and money from companies that fund productions that will include their political and social agendas. I rage all of the time about the "inventory stuffer" garbage that the streamers in particular are buying or leasing. Streamers - "Look.. we have 250, 000 titles in our inventory!" Yep.. but no one wants to watch most of them. We wonder why really garbage movies and TV productions are on the streamers. You.. Akriel Boulve know why, and I hope more people save their money and demand better content. We are paying streamers for quality productions. Stays well👍😊

@Akriel_Boulve: I just checked again, and it’s back down to 6%. Lol. If the cast wasn’t made of up mostly big stars, this would be a career ender for them. It might be a career ender for the girl who plays Tiny Tina.

@stickemup: Pretty much. Curtis is kinda just floating as she's near the end of her career. Cate is pretty in the same spot. Hart is mostly doing stand up and specials so it tanking won't hurt his career while Jack Black is pretty much behind the scenes and vocal work. I feel bad for the kid playing Tiny. She's surrounded by big name stars that don't care if the movie flops while she has everything to lose.

That's also not counting the fact they all got paid millions just to show up while Tiny got paid jack compared to them.

Hopefully this movie takes all the money hungry greedy hollyweirdos down with it. To all the people that didn't even proof read the script and don't even really know anything about borderlands but decided to take the pay anyway, hopefully this is their last cash grab and Hollywood will no longer give them leading rolls. So tired of video game adaptations.

It started with bad casting and just went downhill from there. Simply having high caliber actors is not good enough. They have to fit the part. Ariana Greenblatt, for example, makes a terrible Tiny Tina. One clip of her in character tells you that. Tiny Tina makes Harley Quinn look quiet and timid. Greenblatt makes Tiny Tina look like a cosplay tween who lives in her parents posh mansion and was suddenly thrown into an alternate reality.
