"You do not know how cursed you truly are."

For a game that’s based on the world of Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian, Conan Exiles has remarkably little to do with any part of that universe. It’s a big, open-world survival sim that sticks true to its initial hardcore vision to a fault. When you combine the steep learning curve of a deep but confusing crafting system with largely monotonous gameplay and a spectacularly awful UI, Conan Exiles feels like it does everything it can to push back on those curious enough to step into its admittedly intriguing but highly flawed world.

The game opens as you regain consciousness in the scorching desert, completely naked and vulnerable. As an exile, you are trapped in a doomed and cursed land with nothing but the faint memory of being cut down from your crucifix by Conan, the giant hunk of man-meat himself. From there, you’re free to wander off into the wild yonder. The exiled lands are massive, made up of different environmental biomes that can be explored freely from the outset. Spectacular-looking sandstorms can roll in out of nowhere, forcing you to seek shelter lest they consume you. You can climb anything from mountains and trees to walls and buildings, provided you have the stamina. This adds an extra dimension to exploration, with the added payoff of some lovely views of Conan's varied world.

No Caption Provided

You start out small, picking up rocks and sticks and crafting simple tools. Almost everything you find can be broken down one way or another, and while it's neat to watch rocks chip apart and trees topple over as you hack into them, the humdrum motion of harvesting never feels rewarding. Eventually you’ll need to build shelter and a bed, which becomes your new spawn point. Given the game’s brutal loss of items and resources after death, doing this sooner rather than later can save you some real heartache.

Shelter can mean anything from a small stone shack all the way to a giant castle, complete with reinforced walls, towers, and even a trebuchet. Building is block-based and relatively free form, allowing for hugely elaborate base designs that can be some fun to build, provided you take the time to gather the raw materials to build everything you need. That's all well and good, except for the part where you aren’t shown how to do any of it. It’s all up to you to simply figure out or dive head first into a wiki to have anything explained in detail.

If you aren’t motivated by curiosity, Conan Exiles' single-player mode will feel empty and largely aimless. It's more like a practice mode, with only a handful of NPC outposts and structures to find. When you do, most of them are hostile, and the few that aren’t only offer minimal interaction. Multiplayer changes this up for the better in a few ways, mainly through the addition of other human players.

More importantly, though, multiplayer gives you more purpose and clearer goals to achieve. This includes defending your base from other players as well as The Purge, an army of NPCs that might attack and destroy your base as you gain XP--there's also an option to activate The Purge within the single-player mode. You can also join Clans, which will allow you to build collectively, either on or near clanmates' already-laid foundations. For times when you do have to leave home behind, you can create Thralls--human NPCs with specialised abilities you can knockout, bind, and drag back to base to enslave--to help protect it, and they do a decent enough job.

Character progression in both single and multiplayer takes place in the Journey, a series of tasks grouped into chapters that, when completed, grant you attribute points to spend on any one of seven main ability slots. You also gain knowledge points to unlock new crafting recipes, of which there are a lot. The number of things you can craft is staggering; weapons, armor, survival items, and even religious altars to help to deify the gods of the world and earn their favour.

No Caption Provided

Once you start crafting more complex items, you get better acquainted with one of the game's worst aspects: its UI. There’s nothing intuitive about it, and like the rest of the game, there’s very little explanation given as to how it works. On top of that, it's overly complicated, requiring you to place the resources along with any fuel required into the crafting bench first, select what you want to build from the menu, and then hit the play button to actually craft it. There’s also almost no difference between the console and PC UI, so it's an absolute nightmare to do any kind of inventory management with a controller. And like in most survival sims, it’s what you inevitably spend a significant amount time doing, making it a constant source of frustration.

When you get tired of chipping away at trees and rocks, which you will, you can chip away at creatures or other humans instead. There are all manner of things in the exiled lands for you to kill or be killed by, from animals and beasts to monstrous boss creatures like a giant black spider and a huge, spiked Dragon. But despite the sizeable enemy variety and the large array of weapons you can smith--from daggers to axes and giant mallets--combat is just plain bad. Both light and heavy attacks feel unwieldy thanks to sluggish animations, and weapon strikes lack any impact, resulting in dull and monotonous fights.

Conan Exiles is one of the most unsatisfying games I’ve ever played.

To top it off, Conan Exiles just feels really unpolished. The bodies of harvested enemies simply disappear into thin air, and large areas of the world can pop in and out of view at any time, clipping your character through the ground then respawning you somewhere else on the map. When the night starts to come, the moon’s light casts upwards from the ground, creating an bottomlit effect that looks atrocious. It’s also not in the most stable condition, with a number of crashes affecting gameplay randomly on both PC and Xbox.

Ultimately, Conan Exiles is one of the most unsatisfying games I’ve ever played. Its crafting and resource systems may be dense enough that the ultra-patient could find something to enjoy here, but anyone else would likely walk away with their hands thrown up in defeat. The mind-numbing tedium of harvesting resources, woefully boring combat, and a slew of bugs left me feeling completely underwhelmed and unimpressed when it was all said and done.

I can't 100% speak for the game for when the review was released, but apparently some Update in April 18th 2018 fixed a lot of things and had some overhauls to the game?

In any case, I wanted to test the game out before actually buying it. And that comes with some "shady" playing, meaning, this is the first version I got my hands on (the April 18th one). So, old review or not, having played that version extensively before making my mind up that I would definitely buy the title and enjoy all its even more updated goodies, it is still the version that landed right before this review.

The question at that point that comes to mind is, how much do they pay at gamespot for completely unprofessional people to make reviews? I'd like a job though I will have to tone my reviews down as they would still be more professional than this.

I sure do also love the bias reviewers have."The game does not hold your hand, its brutal and amazing at making the experience hardcore, prepare to die a LOT" - Dark Souls.
"You have to figure everything out on your own, what a piece of junk!" - Conan Exiles.

Mmmmm...

My thoughts at least on his final points, not going into the other details everyone expressed them already anyway.

-Bugs, bugs and more bugs
Can't disagree to this, it is funcom afterall. But, I'd cut it down to just bugs. Once. No, its not as buggy as the review makes it out to be. Not by ten mile long shot. I've played AAA crap from larger devs that was more buggy that still got a pass on their bugs with a "it will be fixed stamp" on them. Ummm, no. The game has bugs, sure, but they are neither gamebreaking most of the time neither as many as the review makes them out to be.
-Confusing UI makes inventory management a nightmare
There is nothing confusing about the UI. If you found it confusing, I suggest reading a picture book and eating a lollypop. I will agree however that it feels sluggish. At 10hrs though I was already flying circles around it. It is avg at best, and needs an overhaul imo. But hardly gamebreaking neither something to get confused by. And strangely enough, deducts minimal from the experience of the game. And you say you spent 40hrs on the game? How? And, how long does it take for you to understand something so "confusing"?
-Crafting system is dense but unintuitive
Actually, the crafting system is great. Simply great. Not even average, its way above average. If I can get into it and further more, enjoy it, a player that absolutely hates the intestines of all things survival, then they done something right. The things you can do and how it all works together really is something that a lot of detail was put into for a great system at hand.
-Combat is sluggish, unexciting, and poorly executed
Ummm..... No. PvP maybe? With jenky ping? Perhaps? Maybe.
Or maces and hammers? Maybe? Kinda, I guess, since they are supposed to be sluggish and slow.
Other than that, no, no, and no.
Combat is fast, the attack to block sequences really surprised me, I expected it much more sluggish, as well as dodging. Blocking works great directionally as well, some great exciting moments blocking several attacks from different directions and pulling it off.

Swords are fast, great swords have momentum and harder for you to be interrupted, maces slower but break armour and blocking, along with different damage effects, and 4 string combos of heavy-light that allow for creating your own real time combos, and I'd say it is hardly poorly executed and all up, quite exciting.

Very satisfying too seeing a head get lobbed off and hearing your enemy scream to death, harvesting their head, and then grinding it for bonemeal to make compost or displaying it for visitors to have a look at.

You sure you didnt get your hands on some pirated early access day one version that had none of this? Cause all of this was part of the April 18th patch which apparently you tested?

Unless you played with, lock on? Yeah, lock on sucks bollocks and I found going free to be much more intuitive and fun. Something which if you did not figure out in 40hrs of playing across PC and Console makes me again wonder how much they pay over there for unprofessional reviews that don't even know how to test mechanics out.

Now for that last point (on resource gathering being tedious and unfulfilling, chat messed it up for some reason)

Its a survival game...... Do you even know what you are reviewing? That is kinda the main point to them (and frankly one of the reasons I dislike survival games. Gathering is tedious in all of them). But I would never fault them for doing what they are supposed to do. Again, unprofessional to the very last.

CE ended up being my only exception to the genre. Strangely enough. The rpg element to it as well and underlying story really surprised me, along with how well it was tied into Conan lore and the fact that it had to be discovered.

Each to their own in the end, but 3 out of 10 sounds like some biased gripes if you asked me.

Totally disagree with this review. I could go line by line but let’s just say decide for yourself. I have played since early pre release through release and the lore is there. Of course it is setup a bit different than the short stories but it is fun. Too bad he gave the game such a scathing review. You don’t need your hand held to play a survival game. It’s brutal deal with it.

@pennace: When Dark Souls makes it hard though its "Hardcooooorrrreee maaaaan, woooooh", when CE does it its "unintuitive"... I rest my case.

I guess you don't need to play the actual game before you review it. There's a lot of different mechanics in the game, hunger, thirst, heat / cold. It's not just clans and animals that can kill you. There's the sandstorms that are a big deal in game, but never mentioned. You'll have to equip gear suited to the environment (like LoZ: Breathe of the Wild). I'd easy put this game in the 6-7 range. There's a lot of options for the gameplay. The game does ramp up the gathering aspect in single player. When you join a server though, you're trapped but the way things are set up.

I think the score of a 3 (out of 10 !) is absurd. It is also very different from other reviews, so I took the chance and bought the game for PC anyway. I think it is a very fun game, even with the crashes. I played several funcom games before, and they are very good in keeping up the support and extending the game. So it is already very fun to play already, but will be even more in the future.

p.s. i created an account, only so i could reply to the score of a 3, which is like i already wrote an absurd score.

3?!? haaaaaa guys please have someone that is actually interested in games that don't hold your hand through a corridor. this game is a very unique experience. what you put into it will grow exponentially. i've just been doing pve quests with friends and it's really fun.. we're building a house right now. doesn't have too many carrots on a stick like in MMOs so you gotta just appreciate when you have a roof over your head. i understand a 6 or FAIR rating, but 3?! come on. 'twas the weiners wasn't it.

A 3/10?? You've got to be kidding me. I'm not saying CE is one of 2018's "best"... but c'mon. 3/10? Ridiculous.

I cant say if the review is too harsh since i never played the game. the only thing i can say is that once again they captured the look of the universe as they did with Conan MMO which i did play.

So that makes me thing why does Funcom keep insisting on making these MMO type Conan games when they could make a good story driven single player Conan game, i always thought they could use Hyborian Adventures for that, they really captured the look and feel of Conan universe in that.

The problem with this review is that the reviewer only put a cursory amount of time into talking about the actual content of the game and its kind of obvious. They played the game to the point of understanding the gameplay but thats probably about it.

I bought the game day one on preview for Xbox and couldnt even play it due to it crashing so much. But its definitely come a long way since.

I'm not going to totally defend CE blindly because it does have a lot of bad. It is Funcom (aka Failcom) afterall.

But theres some really really bright spots in this game that can kind of balance them out. The game is really like a 6 or a 7, and if they fixed the janky servers might even be 8 worthy.

The big thing that the reviewer missed and made a cursory flyby over is the pve world, story of the game and the dungeons/boss encounters. Unlike most other hardcore survival games, CE does actually have a story to progress thru with an ending that actually gets pretty indepth with its knowledge of Conan lore. Any actual fan of the Conan universe will be impressed by this. Theres actually some pretty good boss fights and pve encounters in the game. Also, you can actually just have a good time playing this game exploring which doesnt really happen in many survival games. You can actually level to cap just of exploration xp. The wall climbing dynamic was something that was missing in the survival genre. Then theres things like the sandstorms and the corruption mechanic that also add a layer of depth. Add in the fact that the game world is HUGE with lots of different biomes and structures to explore/climb and its actually got a fair more amount of depth than most games in this genre.

The next big thing the reviewer missed about this game is its probably one of the better if not the best building game out there. The types of structures and things you can make puts Ark to shame. For anyone that enjoys this aspect of these types of games (which is a lot of people), what they did with this game is amazing.

The final thing thats omitted is the thrall system which is pretty unique and actually a new an interesting concept. Being able to capture npcs and put them to work which unlocks other items etc is a pretty nice mechanic.

Also, the combat seems kinda sluggish and slow, but it actually has more depth than the combat in Ark or other survival games due to different weapon effects and armor effecting movement speed. The major bad point about it is in its current state people can just run away if they want to and bows need to be reworked.

The biggest omissions for me are the lack of mounts like horses/camels and the lack of npc cities. But they even have some of those planned with Sepermeru.

So yeah it does have a lot of flaws and probably isnt for everyone. But if you liked Ark Survival (especially building stuff) you will probably love this game.

Dear Conan fans,

I'm glad you enjoy eating at White Castle. You are entitled to shovel whatever barely edible sludge down your drooling, gaping maws that you see fit, and if you think that its magically delicious, well that's great for you. Your choice to eat and enjoy gut churning, bowel disrupting, onion covered cow offal is entirely your prerogative as a fan of awful food. You may even believe that "sliders" are the pinnacle of culinary excellence (they're not), and that's fine. That's YOUR opinion and you're allowed to like whatever the hell you want.

But don't f'ing tell me that WC is a 7 out of 10 just because YOUR gag reflexes haven't functioned since mullets and Zubaz were in fashion. Rational adults/humans don't HAVE to arbitrarily justify how "great" the junkfood they swallow willingly IS to the rest of the world. It's awful, horrible stuff. We know this. We understand that it will likely give us butt problems and do not deny this. We measure it for what it is (crap) and we eat it an enjoy it all the same. And you know what? That's FINE.

Calm the hell down, and keep things in perspective. Eat your junk food and enjoy yourselves. No one it telling you not to. We're just calling junk food junk food and a 3 out of 10 is just about right on the nose for what it's worth.

@jerusaelem: LOL this was actually pretty funny. Actually justifying that sliders aren't the pinnacle of culinary excellence was probably my favorite part. Totally agree with you too my man, "WC" is in no way a 7 out of 10...in fact I have no idea what that game even is that you're referring to, but yea it doesn't sound that good. Conan Exiles on the other hand, definitely is closer to a 7 out of 10. Glad we can agree!

Also part of me really hopes this is just the reviewer that made another account to try and get back at all the people commenting on how sh*t his review is.

Snip from the above review

"Shelter can mean anything from a small stone shack all the way to a giant castle, complete with reinforced walls, towers, and even a trebuchet. Building is block-based and relatively free form, allowing for hugely elaborate base designs that can be some fun to build, provided you take the time to gather the raw materials to build everything you need. That's all well and good, except for the part where you aren’t shown how to do any of it. It’s all up to you to simply figure out or dive head first into a wiki to have anything explained in detail."

You missed one important part about this...figuring things out, and playing with designer and structures is FUN. So let me rephrase this for you.

"Shelter can mean anything from a small stone shack all the way to a giant castle, complete with reinforced walls, towers, and even a trebuchet. HOW COOL IS THAT!?

AWESOME HEY!!??

I swear there needs to be a petition set up to get this re-reviewed by a real gamer, obviously this guy has no fun playing sandbox type games so why do they choose someone like that to review this kind of game?

This game has been the most enjoyable games I've ever played in the sheer amount of decisions you can make. If you want to develop your character and improve his combat you can craft new weapons, armour, or you just feel like building your own castle or shelter as a base you can do that.. the PVP and PVE I have yet to play but teaming up to achieve the vast amount of goals in the game.. the beauty of the different biomes.. what on earth is this reviewer thinking giving it a 3??.. does Gamespot even hire competent reviewers or quality check these ratings? This game is easily a 8+

I want to point to people reading this review , just totally ignore this undeserved score and try the game and on multiplayer.. you will not be dissapointed

OMG, cant believe you give a 3 for this game, I spend 200+ hours on this game and I had a really good time even though this game is still very buggy. Just look at the comments, so many defenders, 3 is definitely a very misleading score. You can't just put your bad mood into this game, this is very unprofessional, you sure we are playing the same game??? Did dear James just got dumped by his cheated girl friend?

After reading your review, I have come to a determination; I will, most likely, be buying and playing this game.

Throughout reading the review, I found myself more and more at odds with your sectional conclusions.

You describe, piece by piece, a game that sounds amazing. Especially when compared to the games that have been released, in this genre and really in all genres, in recent years (please note the use of the 's' in 'years'). Yet, you conclude, piece by piece, that this game is awful.

Your writing is clearly not unbiased. I won't pretend to know why, but I feel safe in knowing should this have been a court of law, this point would be as easily argued, or in this case simply conveyed, as a judge explaining to a jury pool in a number of ways what would constitute beyond a reasonable doubt.

I offer you a conclusion of my own:

"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I've ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response was there anything that could even be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul!"

I legitimately just created an account strictly because the premise of this review is outrageous, and I, like everyone in the comments here, agree that this guy needs to lose his job. Not because I disagree, but because he does such a poor job at accurately analyzing the game and marginalizes the developers and the work they're continually doing to this game majorly, not to mention the fact that he's glaringly biased. Isn't that a HUGE no-no here?

Sure, everyone is entitled to an opinion, but as a "professional" reviewer, you should introduce as little bias into your review as possible. So, we get it; this reviewer needs hand-holding to enjoy a game. Great! In a generation full of sporadic, short attention spans (i.e. the constant need for instant, potent, non-involved, easy entertainment and the inevitable no-effort, Google brains we have now), it comes as no surprise, but shouldn't be encouraged! Like, holy sh**, what a joke. Does no one appreciate a challenge? This game is placed in a genre f**king called SURVIVAL. It mimics real life! The actual definition of survival is, "continue to live or exist, especially in spite of danger or hardship." Grinding for materials is part of the hardships people had to endure in this age!! How about educating yourself on the premise and THEN do a review.

This game has incredible potential, especially in comparison to the other entries in this genre. What this reviewer ignorantly failed to recognize is that the tendency for developers to release unfinished games as official products is becoming ever so common, and there needs to be a general awareness of this fact when totaling its value. Get this, though,he played in EARLY ACCESS; the developers are actively improving the game successfully (for example, the tremendous combat overhaul).

I could go on and on. I'm exhausted by this man's ignorance lol. Like, Jesus, I'd do a better job than him and I'm a 23-year-old girl with no expertise in this field!!! I just love games. :P

P.S. I have at least a couple hundred hours on Conan Exiles on PS4, and goddamn, does it have its glitches and downfalls, but the point is, that he TOTALLY ignored what needed to be mentioned. Like others, I'd give it a 6-7, with so much potential left to improve.

Second of all, you're the one who's immature because you're a) making fun of someone's preference, and b) calling someone names.

The game is no way a 3 my friend. Even in it's buggy and clunky state its at least a 6.9-7.0.

In all the years I've been reading gamespot reviews this is far and away the most misleading/unfair score I've ever seen, honestly don't know how this dude has a job reviewing games especially for a site like this.

This game is by no means perfect but reminds me in a lot of ways of one of my favorite RPG series Gothic in that it's rough around the edges and suffers from some bugs & interface issues, but if you stick with it you will find a very immersive game with tons of content that will suck you in.

Definitely deserves something closer to a 7 (with a potential for higher with improvements, which are in the works).

This isn't a review, it's just a rant by someone who obviously doesn't like, understand, or play survival genre.

@Sixmoons: Yes, the complaint about the clunky UI being almost impossible to navigate with a controller is an attack on the survival genre. And a man farting downwind in China is a personal attack on you.

I'm not sure why the reviewer was so harsh with his number rating but the weight of his opinion is reflected by his number of followers. Please don't doubt gs's reviews based on this attention grabbing hit piece.

Dull and dense. Sounds like Conan. Surely that's a recommendation?

This isn't the first time I've really enjoyed a game that got a poor review, and I have no idea why the score would be that low to begin with.

Combat in this game during it's early stages was really really awful, I stopped playing for months. About a month ago I came back to Conan and I'm impressed with the combat and how much more fluid it has become, especially that depending on the weapon you are using the combos differ and the fighting style changes to compliment the weapon. This guy clearly never played Ark: SE, stiff combat. Why should they tell you how to play/survive? You should be figuring that out on your own. Surviving is about grinding for resources! Hmm, once again clearly he's never played Ark either. Kindly disregard this review. I rate it a 3 for inaccuracies and lack of knowledge in the survival genre. It has it's bugs still, but it's refreshing to see more survival games that have nothing to do with zombies, just saiyan.

wat? me? i dont have money for this game and i dont care about conan so i didnt even try it or watch it or anything really

@CRAPCOM1926: Personally, I think reviewers of games can go through a bad spell of not liking something they normally would. I know I do, and that's why I wouldn't want to be a game reviewer. I'm just too unpredictable depending on my mood with some things LOL.

You're the reason why games went from reading and thinking to just putting a big circle on the map and an arrow or path leading you there. All games have problems, but they (like most games) are ironing them out and doing a great job at it. I guess combat would be dull since it doesn't flash or defy physics while someone screams like they're trying to jerk off with icy-hot then again it's not supposed to. Gathering only takes forever if you don't upgrade your tools or fight anything, because human mobs can give you boatloads of materials both for crafting or already crafted. I got to 60 and hardly went through the "journey" because you can explore a lot and read the history and lore through tabs and the large amount of friendly npcs who are not easily found because they are trying to survive in this harsh world too with a ton leftover to explore. Even the sandstorm has a backstory if you explore and read. Even ghosts lead you to lore and treasure. The only item I had to look up to make was harden steel bars (brimstone and steel bars). Every recipe tells you what you need to make it clearly. Yes you need to fuel your forge and your kitchen fire. That's how fire works. The inventory is easy it's a basic grid. I need that item (moves joystick then hit button that says add to) so hard.

I respect the opinion but maybe we are not playing the same game? Perhaps for the 40 hours you put into it you were in a bad mood? I would definitely verify we are in fact playing the same game. If so, try to play with some puppies before playing Conan so you play the game in a good mood. Maybe you will see that the game is actually not too bad.

Conan Exiles and 7 Days to Die are the two best games this genre has to offer currently. Take that as you will.
