Dark Souls 3: Ashes of Ariandel Review

  • PC

Painting by the numbers.

Ashes of Ariandel, the first of two announced content add-ons for Dark Souls III, excels at feeling like a natural extension of the main game. It delivers much of what veterans expect from Dark Souls: challenging bosses, a locale that promotes exploration, and a new collection of gear. What's missing is that sense of awe that usually pulls you deep into the series' dark fantasy worlds. Dark Souls' best regions are those that command your attention beyond the promise of a fabled weapon or a novel group of enemies to vanquish. Ashes of Ariandel isn't in the same class as Artorias of the Abyss – the standout, lore-rich add-on from the original Dark Souls – but that doesn't make it a poor expansion--it’s just not a noteworthy one.

Like the frosted regions of Dark Souls II’s Crown of the Ivory King DLC, the Painted World of Ariandel is a wintry landscape that sometimes obscures its dangers behind fog and falling snow. Other areas provide typical Dark Souls vistas: The dramatic reveal of a grand chapel in the distance is enhanced by the foreground view of a long, fragile rope bridge. Like a similar overpass in the main game, this rickety span offers an access point to a new area, provided you have the imagination to find another purpose for the ropes.

Now Playing: Dark Souls 3: Ashes of Ariandel - Gameplay

No Caption Provided

The Painted World of Ariandel is a little bit larger than any individual DLC episode from Dark Souls II, though the generous scattering of bonfires--the series' safe havens--shortens an otherwise long journey. Many areas are as vast as they are tall. The trudge up a steep hill is a fruitful exercise in amassing a large kill count as you also manage your health-replenishing Estus Flasks. The undead soldiers who populate this hill are no zombies--they move with purpose once they see you and tactfully strike as well as any imposing Dark Souls foe.

There aren't just secrets in Ashes of Ariandel but also rewards for thorough exploration. One such prize is a switch that grants you access to the main boss, and the challenge comes from enduring the vile surroundings where the switch is found: a dark, dank room filled with giant flies that aim to kill you with bleed attacks.

Dark Souls III: Ashes of Ariandel accentuates the value of the journey over the destination.

Another reason to search every corner? To find the ticket to gain access to the PVP arena. While this online battleground is limited to one area designed especially for PVP, its replay value is reinforced by myriad match customization features, such as setting team sizes and access to consumables. While it's not engrossing enough to serve as the DLC's main draw, the ability to play beyond one-on-one battles is a welcome twist to a fan-favorite feature.

Like many Dark Souls environments before it, Ashes of Ariandel accentuates the value of the journey over the destination. It's about collecting new sets of gear and vanquishing the armed, aggressive hostiles who linger around the goodies. Typical of many Dark Souls areas, some items aren't directly accessible upon first sight. Studying the lay of the land in order to reach those items is its own gratifying brain teaser. And in classic Dark Souls fashion, a shortcut is the reward for surviving an excursion to the unlockable side of an otherwise locked gate.

Ashes of Ariandel's showcase battle is against Sister Friede, whose persona as a scythe-wielding nun--a holy death dealer, if you will--is an amusingly ham-fisted image. It’s a duel that becomes all the more memorable if it evolves into a battle of attrition, although expert players can avoid such a grind. Her magic-enhanced moveset doesn't include any surprises, though her speed and expansive repertoire make her a formidable opponent for those with average skills. Success against her requires defense and patience above all else, so players who lean on the aggressive side are doubly tested. She's also a superb reminder that this series still has the ability to teach veteran players new tactics--even those who already have dozens of boss kills under their belts.

The rewards for defeating Friede--a pair of frost-enhanced scythes and a curious bouquet of roses designed for flagellation--are appropriately representative of the DLC’s other unique gear. The Millwood armor set is one of the few ensembles in this DLC that makes you look like Viking, while the Valorheart grants the user a new way to shield bash. A melee weapon like the Crow Talons doesn't have much value as a main weapon over the long haul but there is gratification to having this loot as trophies for triumphing over tougher foes.

What Ashes of Ariandel lacks in originality, it makes up for in cohesion with the full version of Dark Souls III. The duel against Sister Friede, the DLC's highpoint, is the type of Dark Souls boss fight that makes an indelible impression--she’s on the same level as the Abyss Watchers or Dancer of the Boreal Valley. While Ashes of Ariandel is ultimately a safe addition to Dark Souls III, it's convincingly satisfying; the risk of death at any moment is as likely as finding a new piece of practical gear or the discovery of an unexplored path. Just don't expect any areas as memorable as those in the main game or revelatory moments that substantially expands the lore.

The Good

  • A fitting extension of Dark Souls III
  • Impressive final boss
  • Diverse environment layouts
  • Lots of new enemies and gear to discover

The Bad

  • Doesn't leave a lasting impression
  • Abundant bonfires lessen exploration-based challenges

About the Author

Miguel toured his level-130 character from Dark Souls III throughout every area of Ashes of Ariandel on the PlayStation 4. The playthrough took about 6 hours, not counting failed boss fights. He also used a level 85-character in the Steam version for a partial 3-hour playthrough. Complimentary review codes for both platforms were provided by Bandai Namco.

Hi Everyone!

I made a video about a fictional Invader character, called Moe. Who is a little bit too full of himself and he also likes to break the fourth wall a lot. Travel with him through all kinds of adventures like being beat up by gank squads and having revenge on lonesome travelers. But sometimes he gets lucky and manages to spank a ganker here and there. Enjoy the vid. #invadersarealsopeople

"The Painted World of Ariandel is a little bit larger than any individual DLC episode from Dark Souls II"

No, not really. Crown of the Sunken King, the shortest of the Dark Souls 2 DLCs felt about as long or a little bit longer than AoA. Sunken King in any case felt more substantial for having more creative level design and more interesting challenges. Old Iron King and Ivory King were definitely much longer-lasting each (and also better overall too). Most of the length from this DLC for the first time will come from wading through the enemy ganks that populate each area before each bonfire, and the 18,000 HP Sister Friede fight of course. Once you know the design of the area inside out it's very brief and underwhelming, compared to the Souls 2 DLCs, let alone Artorias of the Abyss or the Old Hunters for BB. It's great as a glorified weapons pack (as in the new weapons are the best thing about the DLC) but it suffers from the overall lack of imagination and dull level design that are spots on the main game of Dark Souls 3. A nice-looking but rather generic snowy environment with another chapel to add to Dark Souls 3's growing list of them for a main interior area and more Dark Souls 1 fan-jerking in the form of another fight with a wolf boss guarding its master's grave (with the addition of the master's page who is just an NPC who doesn't wear pants), the grave looking like it was constructed out of clay by a child. And the Ariamis callbacks of course with the arena and the dungeon where you open the passage to the boss, though perhaps there's "lore" justification with those if what this is is indeed the original Ariamis canvas painted over by a new owner. Mostly changed but remnants of the old world are left behind in fragments. But at this point I'm getting tired of just revisiting Dark Souls 1 story points that didn't need it (while Dark Souls 2 seems to be rendered as all but completely incidental at best in the trilogy) and would like to something, well, new. The next and final DLC is going to really need to up its game in a MAJOR way to ultimately redeem this game and its hanging lore threads and meaningless references and callbacks that also don't answer or add much to anything. Artorias of the Abyss and Old Hunters did a good job at taking familiar locations and turning them on their head while gradually taking us down the rabbit hole to hell, while Dark Souls 2's DLCs were great at giving us new and unique locations altogether. This DLC doesn't succeed well at either, it attempts the former with less-than-convincing results.

It's sad people want quantity over quality. This DLC was quality, that 3 stage boss fight was amazing. Praise it for what it did right not that there wasn't more. 15 dollars I was happy to spend.

I loved playing the expansion, but in the end, I was disappointed. Was hoping for at least 4 new bosses and areas. Here's hoping the next dlc will be somewhat longer, more substantial.

The only problem I find in any DS game or DLC is that they end at some point and no other game matchs their perfect mixture of fair challenging gameplay, rich deep lore and memorable artistic design. You can only compare a Souls game to another DS.

It comes as no surprise that this DLC would get an okay score. Nothing that From Soft pulls from their bag of tricks will match Artorias of the Abyss no matter how much they keep hyping DS series.

I still play like crazy this series but it's time to face the truth and assume that, while Bloodborne could've a great future ahead, DS has pretty much ended by now. Even if a DS4 arrives one day, it'll still be like milking...

I was really looking forward to this, and despite almost finishing it (1 boss remains) it hasn't grabbed me like other dlc before it. I spent ages going through the souls 2 dlc and as or the Artorias expansion for souls 1, I think that consumed just as much of my of my life as the main game.

Not saying I dislike souls 3 or the new content but I think the appeal has definitely worn thin. a good time for Fromsoft to stop

Dare I say this as I try not to encourage remasters but my exception is Demon Souls, I'd love to see that with a fresh coat of paint!

@cherub1000: I would love to see DS 1 remaster as well. This way all the DS game would be available on PS4! Not so mention that PC port of DS is just awful.

Gotta love all the people whining about FROM SOFTWARE games being cheap and unfair just because YOU suck at the games lol. Some bosses are a lot tougher than others and have more health, but that doesn't mean they are cheap and broken. Step your reflexes up and know your enemies weak spots. People like you make me sick to my stomach, because games are ridiculously easy and dumbed down in this age to hold your hand from start to finish. Too many games with 1 million checkpoints, tons of ammo waiting on you, health everywhere, etc. If you want to play a broken and unfair game, stick Silver Surfer or Ninja Gaiden 1-3 in a Nintendo NES and you'll see what being cheated means in terms of difficulty.

@sonypony4eva: So I have beat DS 1 and 2 multiple times on ng+++ whatever. And I must say that DS3 bosses are a huge disappointment. Their AI f'n sucks so they are programmed with moves that have the sole purpose of preventing you from ever attacking them. It's like: dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, attack, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge... Well unless you play as a tanked up lunkhead, but any damn fool can do that.

I don't know guys, but to me Dark Souls 3 is the worst of the series. Everything just feels cheap compared to Dark Souls 2 (to not even begin to talk about Dark Souls 1). Dark Souls 3 lends too much from Bloodbourne. When you get blasted by a thousand enemy hits it just feels unfair. Deaths in Dark Souls 2 was like "aah, I screwed up, I'll try harder next time." Dark Souls 3 is like "oh come on!!"

Maybe it is just me though, as many people are enjoying it. I am playing through it as well, but there are many times I wish I was doing something else, like trying harder to complete Witcher 3 for example.

I will probably get flamed a lot for this post, but there you go, my opinion. And since this is core gameplay we are talking about, not any amount of DLC can change my opinion.

@Xanitra: Let me do a slight correction... "Ahhh.. This fucking hitboxes are fucking broken" - Dark Souls 2.

All jokes aside, I share the same feeling about Ds3 sharing to much stuff with Bloodborne.

@Xanitra: Your entitled to your opinion, I don't find any of them that bad really - I do think Dark Souls II is better then Dark Souls III - but they are all fine, nothing compares to the challenge of Demons Souls though.

Demon Souls > Dark Souls > Dark Souls II > Dark Souls III (for me it feels as if each title = dumbs it down to make it easier and easier) Demons & original Dark Souls felt the most challenging, even Dark Souls II has some real challenge to it, like you said - when you die, its a matter of oh, try again...but I had some rage-inducing moments on Demons Souls...and...uh wtf are you doing playing DS 3 when you could finish Witcher 3 LOL W O W. I would finish Witcher 3 way before I'd start any From Software game. But in the end I enjoy them all, its just an opinion you can ignore comments altogether. Who cares who flames who.

@Xanitra: Personally it's my favorite along with Dark Souls (though Bloodborne is my favorite From Software game overall). I find Dark Souls 2 to be the worst, IMO. I also don't really see how you could suffer cheap deaths in DS3, if anything, I found the game to be a bit too easy (except for the Abyss Watchers, which I struggled with for a long time for some reason).

I have to say, I find it very troubling that rehashed games like Battlefield & Titanfall are still getting reviewed as 9s, but standout unique works of genius like DS3 and this dlc are reviewed as 8s or 7s. BF and Titanfall are following the same 1st person formulae thats been flooding the market since f***ing 2007's Modern Warfare. How many different machine guns can you shoot a guy with? How many killstreaks do you need before your f***ing boner falls off?

My point is: No. No way this DLC is deserving of a 7. Im not sure what you expected out it. The level design is awe-inspiring. The lore and new story points it hints at are gorgeous and expertly crafted. It offers a bevy of new unique weapons for every type of player. It introduces a back story for the games antagonist (The Pontiff) and possible beginnings of the shrouded Sable Church.

Look. DS is not for everyone. But the people who do enjoy it, cherish it. And get that 99% of the stuff out there, pales in comparison. My review is: If you loved DS3, you will love this additional content.

@hippystank: Yeah the Friede & Father Ariandel boss fight is one of the best in the series! This review is such bull****. I replayed it again last night. I would say its the best designed area in the entire game. A 7!? Ha! Not even close dude. I am piecing together so many story points now that keep occurring to me: A few interesting ones being, all those large statues erected throughout Irithyll of the cloaked woman: dude, its Friede. The Pontiff's mother. And all the pictures of the young androgynous boy surrounding Friede in the chapel, is The Pontiff as a child. Same exact clothing. And, there is much more insight I have to share about it, but heres not the place, find me on the DS3 reddit threads (bonzaibillie). Yeah: This is a 7, and CoD is an 8. What a joke. I give it a 9/10 as well.

@bonzaibillie_99: Well while I may not enjoy every COD or FPS game for that matter, truth be told Titanfall 2=looks, runs, and is quite amazing (and has something the first title didn't even have) and honestly you ALSO have to remember not everyone PLAYS every rehashed title (besides whats so wrong with rehashing...cause uh, seems to Me Dark Souls/From Software is beginning to do that as well) with "incremental yearly releases" so...your really trying to argue on the fence here, meaning you could fall off on either side. I could say the same thing (but backwards) "who would want to play DS...if they prefer FPS games, and online w/ their friends & headsets BF1 and T2 have enough content, new maps to keep players invested for awhile) and honestly I'm not even a huge FPS but..>I have to say I am actually enjoying BF1, mind you I haven't played every BF religiously for years...so DO remember 40% of a games sales MAY be someone new coming into the genre/franchise...he/she doesn't care if its rehashed, or only slightly updated from the previous gen/game. Me personally I don't touch most sports or racing games but I love Forza Horizon 3 & NBA 2k17 (and if you knew me personally you'd know that I stay far away from yearly releases of sports games & sports in general lol). But it had been years and I do mean years since I had a good FPS (a new one) and a sports title, specifically basketball, and now looking back - I'm glad I made the investment cause I am really enjoying both BF1, Forza Horizon 3 & NBA 2k17 - and honestly coming from a guy who played Demons Souls (numerous play throughs on the PS3) and Dark Souls & Dark Souls II - I liked Dark Souls III no argument here, but I find that each new title seems to be dumbing it down/making it easier, less challenge. I still enjoyed the current DS title and I will invest in this expansion sooner then later. But do remember your argument/opinion could be twisted either way...I think the recent sports/racing/first person shooters have done well.....well...because they look & run well, and are pretty fun, I mean Far Cry 2, 3, 4, Primal - was basically "incremental increases" the mechanics changed alot from 2 to 3 - but from 3 onward the template had been laid...and many would argue "copy n paste mechanics, just new enemies, and a new main antagonist" lol...I don't see that as a bad thing...so much emphasis on "new" trying new things, or trying to break barriers, sometimes if its not broke----you know the rest. Let the "other" company/dev - try something fresh/new/invigorating -maybe it will work maybe it wont, but sometimes I just want something I'm familiar with...again not always I go through "changes" gaming-wise. Sometimes I want a new platformer, completely fresh & original....unlike what is currently out..then other times, I just wanna kill w/ friends & family on Black Ops II...after all it is just gaming, I dont gotta be so technical & serious. I know what your saying though...your a DS fan, and feel that this content should have maybe gotten a higher review score...but who cares, if you enjoy it - then enjoy it but dont bash BF1 (simply b/c yearly releases from EA Games, and so fowarth annoys you) COD, BF, etc, etc - and honestly I've seen From Software releasing content at a much faster pace then the dev's behind the last few Battlefields....BF1 was fun, and still is...it may be something I put down after a period of time...but I've enjoyed it (and Titanfall 2, I have to agree with my cousin he thinks its a major improvement, incremental yes, but the added campaign, new RCK mechanics, better controls, more stable frame-rate, and better online / multiplayer aspects go along way to improving overall experience). I think with some added content/patches Titanfall 2 could be a FPS contender for GOTY (some publications do GOTY for each genre, and unless something totally amazing/mind-blowing comes out in the next 2 months T2 may just be that game). But again, thats opinion...in the end I don't see rehashed as necessarily a bad thing though. But I'm not bashing or saying your wrong or flaming anyone (I don't do that) for me its simple: To each their own, good day & enjoy the game

@bonzaibillie_99: As someone who has at least 200 hours in each DS game (and bloodborne also) , I'll have to say I Agree with the score on this expansion.

Sure, I also don't think BF1 deserves a 9, and this expansion would be a 9 IF it's predecessors didn't set standards for DS games and expansions.

And in this case, when you compare this expansion with any of the 3 separate ones from DS2, or the single richer ones from BB and DS1, it is subpar.

@bonzaibillie_99: Play TitanFall 2 first. Play its campaign, then come back and tell me, what is rehashed.

Its weird how you are saying that, especially playing Dark Souls 3, which is just roll, hit, roll. Since DS1.

@CRAPCOM1926: I didnt expect this to be a popular post. Most people have s*** taste and lack eloquence. You say its nothing special without articulating WHY you think that. There are a 100 specifics I could go into explaining why this is a beautiful and exciting piece of additional content in the DS universe, which makes you see facets and locations of DS3's original content in a different & expanded light. Specifics most observers will overlook.

Yes I played BF at a friends. And PRECISELY what I said above holds true. Run around. Shoot dudes. Include ham-fisted cliched story lines that youve seen a million times before. Let the game hold your hand the entire way. Play mp. Spawn. Get killed. Spawn. Kill a guy. Get killed. Wash rinse repeat until your f***ing brain turns into an amorphous jelly sack.

@bonzaibillie_99: Like your "eloquence"... Condescending shitting on other games somehow proves this review is unfair?

By the way, Dark Souls isn't difficult or requires any particularly strong mindset for tactic...it's difficulty relies on cheap gimmicks and unfair mechanics, instead of relying on dynamic and complex enemy AI design.

Pretty much majority of action games and every single strategy game out there.

All ranged attackers do not even reposition themselves to shoot AROUND obstacles...if there is a wall or an object in the way, they will simply shoot at it indefinitely.

There is no group dynamic, cooperation or awareness of any kind...in fact, they blindly attack through one another, mitigated because they're usually immune to friendly fire.

Magic is overpowered for two reasons...First: they do extremely poor job at dodging even very slow missiles and simply walk into projectiles and second: their AI aggro radius is often too small and you can often blast them from a distance. Entire sections of the game can be cleared this way...Proof: DS I, Tomb of the Giants.

They do a very poor job at navigating the environment and frequently fall to their deaths. This is actually a very effective strategy.

They do not use objects in the environment to their advantage like enemy AI in other games, like Exanima or FC I/II.

Bosses can be easily killed by summons by using them as distractions and hitting them in back, roll away, repeat.

What is "fair" about DS is:

Enemies rotate during their attacks like they're tied to player through an invisible leash.

Their attacks pass through walls and objects, while player is stunlocked at the same.

They ambush the player from corners because of very narrow FOV and borderline broken camera, leading to cheap deaths( well in Painted World).

Even weakest enemies can have far greater amount of stamina to deliver a flurry of attacks, far greater than the player.

Plenty of hitboxes are also broken, in particular when it comes to monster grappling attacks.

They have cheap and unrealistic movesets...undead dogs floating away horizontally like squids, shambling zombies breaking Olympic records with instant jumps, etc.

@bobothemighty: I'll agree about group dynamic and aggro radious.

I'll disagree on the cheap moveset though. Its a videogame, does not need to be realistic , a zombie in DS can and should have unexpected moves, thats what makes it hard.

That is in no way however cheap, they are all dodgeable, defensable, and telegraphed enough that you can know when it is coming.

Still no difficulty setting? I want to play Dark Souls III Ironman. I can't do that when the game is insanely hard. I would rather lower the difficulty and play the game without ever dying once. Ironman gaming is becoming more and more popular. This stupid game encourages you to die, reload, die, reload, die reload.

Ironman gaming is the PROPER way to play a game like this. It forces you to experience all the dangers the character experiences. Playing Ironman is about maximizing immersion. This game needs to add a balanced mode for Ironman or at least add a difficulty setting. Not everyone wants to play the game like an idiotic noob who dies and reloads over and over again.

@luzarius: But you don't reload at all... You respawn, that's totally different and it just shows how little you have actually played lol

@luzarius: man you are gay, this game is the easiest, is not our fault you have shitty skills which is just sad the game is very easy as long you play attention you will only die when you fight 3 enemies at the same time and some bossess. Stop criying like a little bitch.

@dmassou: yea its just a game, if hes not that good at it, may be his first Dark Souls, or he just may not be that good LOL coming from a 36 year old who has been gaming for nearly 30 years Dark Souls II was more challenging but even I destroyed that game with no extra additional help (no videos, no aids/guides, nothing) just killed all the respawns, over and over (every 3-4 rooms, I would clear, go back to Bonfire, reset Flask, clear same 3-4 rooms, over and over 15x times ,till they dont respawn ever again) and I'd obtain 14,000 - 15,000 souls at a time) go level up 3.4.5 times...acquire elite A ranked gear (and be Level 29 before I was 14 hours into the game) lol....no hacks, no cheats, no guides, nothing just do what I always do ...power level, super MMO-type grinding over and over...to the point where nothing really poses a challenge...hell first day-2nd day of playing I was already clearing Heides Tower of Flame large armored guys with 3-4 swings from (all gear was upgraded by Blacksmith in Majula numerous times early on). I found that the first big boss, guardians, etc - were all dispatched first-attempt with little to no effort. For me I only died when looking off for just a second and flittering off the side of the games geometry (I just finished Xenoblade Chronicles X) go from 328 hours of that (flying anywhere you want, falling as far as you want w/o any punitive consequences) to...Dark Souls and its horrid jump/controls look its....3 feet down...water YOU DIED lol...wtf ? lol...let me trek 2 rooms again to get my 7,900 souls back. Stupid stuff like that, the games small little pathways and maneuvering in small gaps next to giant black holes & water pits was the worse part, the actual combat & bestiary wasn't really all that bad. Then again I played Demons Souls which was far more difficult. Anyone that says otherwise is just posturing online. Demon Souls > Dark Souls > Dark Souls II > Dark Souls III (in terms of challenge & overall difficulty). I've enjoyed all the titles, but Demons Souls is by far (the first) and most challenging of the said franchise...I liked Bloodborne as well I'd put it somewhere between DS & DS II. Some will disagree and thats fine, its just an opinion...not the cure to cancer lol. But I think the online gaming community / social commentary will agree Demons Souls is From Softwares most challenging title of this era, thats pretty much unanimously agreed upon.

@Itzsfo0: Well that was a lengthy reply lol. I have played all of them except for Demon souls, but now that you say its the hardest one im going to go ahead and download it. In my opinion the spin-off Bloodborne was more of a task than any of the souls games, but as you said its only from my perspective. The games are not that hard but it just depends of how good you are at gaming i guess.
