Diablo 3: Eternal Collection Switch Review - Better With Age

Even after all this time.

More than anything, Diablo 3: Eternal Collection proves just how well Blizzard's action-RPG has aged. Six years after its original release, the dungeon crawler remains as rewarding as ever, and despite a few technical concessions, it has found yet another welcoming home on Nintendo's portable console.

For those unfamiliar with Blizzard's 2012 loot fest, Diablo 3 places you in the shoes of a superpowered demon-slayer in a hellish, gothic world. You explore five disparate regions from a top-down view, upgrading your character and earning new loot as you battle the lords of the underworld and their monstrous swarms.

Now Playing: Diablo 3 On Switch Video Review

With the Eternal Collection, Diablo 3 includes every expansion, every character, every quality-of-life improvement the RPG has ever added. One of the more notable options is the ability to play Adventure Mode right from the start, eliminating the need to slog through the slower-paced story out of necessity.

Of course, in coming to Nintendo Switch, Diablo 3 has also become a portable game. And it works. It works incredibly well.

In fact, I can think of few games better suited for a handheld port. So much of Diablo 3 plays best in short bursts, from the 10-minute chase for that next legendary item, to the satisfying flow of a challenge rift. I completed bounties on my way to work and organized my inventory on the way back. Of the 50 hours I spent with Diablo 3 on Switch, about half of them played out in handheld mode. It's another testament to the novelty of Nintendo's console, yes, but also the elegance of Diablo 3's design.

Movement still feels natural on the analog sticks--whether you're playing with the Joy-Cons or Pro controller--and custom controls make it easy to maximize your character build at any time. As was the case with Diablo 3's previous jump to PS4 and Xbox One, the mechanical leap to Switch is painless and fluid. It's just as easy to rely on muscle memory while you focus on the kaleidoscopic display of magic and fire. To paraphrase the designer Don Norman: good design is invisible.

When it comes to visual fidelity, Blizzard ensured that Diablo 3 on Switch runs at 60 frames across the board--aside from rare occasions when elemental effects didn't animate, the Eternal Collection is remarkably clean. Even during high-level challenge rifts, with hundreds of demons covering the screen, the dungeon crawler maintained a smooth and steady pace. The framerate is equally stable in handheld mode, and crunching those mobs is just as satisfying as it's ever been.

The Eternal Collection's resolution, on the other hand, is a bit more muddled. In the Switch's docked mode, Diablo 3 looks aggressively fine, or at least, as good as any other isometric game released in 2012. In handheld mode's 720p resolution, however, things get cloudier. I mean that both literally and metaphorically. In Diablo 3's darker areas--of which there are many--I have to crank my console's brightness all the way in order to really see what is going on. Even then, there's a slight haze over everything, making character models look more like mirages than actual figures. Handheld mode's jagged edges and foggy panoramas aren't massive flaws by any means, but after playing for long periods in docked mode, they tend to stand out.

What they don't do, however, is detract from Diablo's thrilling combat. And of course, in true series tradition, that combat is often more thrilling with a friend or two.

Few cooperative experiences compare to a Monk, Demon Hunter, Barbarian, and Wizard working in concert to whittle down mobs down little by little, one demon at a time. It's a special thrill to see my character build factor into a larger group, and an even better one to see how that group dynamic changes how I play. I'm still mainly focused on killing every enemy possible, but I'm also thinking about tanking with my Crusader, or healing with my Monk, or littering the screen with corpses to give my Necromancer ally more ammunition.

As with previous console iterations of Diablo 3, The Eternal Collection allows for up to four players on one console at a time. Item management is less satisfying in this scenario, as you're either quick-equipping new loot without appreciating its subtleties, or pausing the game for the entire party just so you can boost your damage by 100 points. The radial menus are also still as imprecise as ever, but I'm hard-pressed to think of a better solution without a mouse and keyboard.

I came into the Eternal Edition expecting a eulogy for one of my favorite games. Instead, I stumbled upon a celebration.

And although Diablo 3 on Switch gives you the option to use Joy-Cons as individual controllers, be warned: It's counterintuitive and cumbersome, with poor button-mapping and an overreliance on motion controls. Blizzard did the best it could with what the Joy-Con offers, but when in doubt, stick to the Pro controller or the dual Joy-Con rig.

The Eternal Collection brings the additional ease of playing via LAN connection on each player's respective Switch. It's helpful to have the camera focused solely on your character, especially in Diablo 3's more hectic moments. But I still couldn't help preferring local co-op. There's something novel--even nostalgic--about playing on the same screen, watching the same chaos unfold as the person next to you. Diablo 3 on Switch allows for several methods of playing with friends, and whatever your preference, the experience still holds up.

Like the best games, Diablo 3 has gotten better with time. And despite a few setbacks, the Switch is now my preferred home for the extraordinary RPG. It includes every major improvement Blizzard made to the formula, with the added handheld versatility every Switch port offers.

Diablo 3 is a game about long term goals accomplished in short, thrilling bursts. It's rewarding and subtle. It's flashy and boisterous. I have spent six years enjoying it, and will likely spend six years more. As far as video games go, that's a long time--I came into the Eternal Collection expecting a eulogy for one of my favorite games. Instead, I stumbled upon a celebration.

Diablo 3: Eternal Collection is featured on our list of the best PS4 multiplayer games.

NOT. WORTH. $60. AGAIN.

Why the hell (pun intended) does this review not mention the insane price they are asking for this port?? I've put hundreds of hours into D3 already and would be interested in another run on the Switch but I refuse to be ripped off. Charging full $60 for this is an insult. I'm not going to pay it.

@jasonp: Or maybe there's lots of us who never bothered with the game when it first came out? Maybe Switch games are stupid expensive to produce? Maybe it's the fact it comes with all DLC, expansions, and patches?

You know Nintendo has nothing to do with the price point for games they don't produce themselves, right? The $60 is all on Blizzard.

@deviltaz35: Did you complain when the FFX HD collection was ported for no reason? Or how about Last of Us? Nathan Drake Collection? Master Chief Collection? I think they even ported the Kingdom Hearts collection to the PS4.

@jasonp: It’s overpriced in your eyes. There will also be some who think it’s an acceptable price and will buy it. Neither of you is right or wrong, as the game’s value is based on the individual.

@zmanbarzel: AGREED!!! My post is to voice my opinion, not to tell anyone what to do. I also think the review above should have mentioned the price, but that's also my opinion.

@Bread_or_Decide: What a 7th-grade comment. Did I ever mention being poor? Did I ever say I couldn't afford $60? There's a big difference between not being able to afford something and not wanting to pay the price asked when the price is deemed excessively high. When your Mom gets home ask her and she'll explain it to you.

@jasonp: Maybe one day you'll make enough not to care. Until then, keep crying about expensive games. And fyi, this entire hobby is a money pit. Maybe you'd prefer taking up crotchet, much cheaper.

@jasonp: These are the fools I see paying $17 for a HotDog in Time Square ?

Yep, Tons of stuff I can "afford" but know it is not worth the price. $60 for D3 is an obvious one.

@agramonte: EXACTLY. The reason I am NOT broke is because I don't waste money on overpriced stuff. I have no idea why so many are arguing with me about not getting ripped off. Even if you are a huge D3 fan, you must already own the game and can see that spending full price again all these years later is not right.

Like I said before, I am not asking for it to be free. $17 hot dogs should cost something too, just not $17.

@jasonp: It's pretty impossible for reviews like this to consider price. Partly because the review didn't pay for it, partly because prices change over time, partly because you can find different deals in different place, partly because prices vary from territory to territory, and partly because everybody has a different perspective on what their money is worth.

This is a review of the game, not the price. Everybody has to decide for themselves if the game's worth the price.

@Mogan: Of course reviewers can mention cost. They talk about microtransactions and other cost-related topics (like the price of DLC) all the time. If Dead Cells, Hollow Knight, Golf Story, or any other Indie game was $60 then I guarantee the reviews of those games would have mentioned that because that would have been inappropriate. The same applies here. This game has been out for a very long time, and many have already played it. Some, like me, have played it extensively (Paragon level well over 1000). WE are the target audience, and since we have already bought the game, it's stupid for them to think we'll fork over $60 AGAIN for it.

@jasonp: though i wont argue about price, you are not just the "target audience".

How about newcomers to the hobby of gaming or younger gamers who haven't played this?

Iv never played a diablo game and im 42 not really liking them when i was younger?

Iv played similar games, and i recently bought diablo 3 for ps3 to have a go for next to nothing before this was announced.

surely any laptop or tablet like Microsoft surface will run this? (though the surface is pricey i know. not compared to switch)

Thanks ;)

@jasonp: MTX costs are fixed, don't usually drop over time, reviewers may actually see them, and they can effect the game. That's the no usually the case with the actual purchase price of the game itself.

Not to mention, everyone knows what they'll have to pay to buy a game before they buy it, so everyone can make up their own minds without needing to buy the game to do it.

But if you think whatever price you're seeing for this is too high, you can always go write your own review. There's a button for that right up above this very comments section.

@Mogan: I'm not going to review a game without playing it, and I am not playing this for $60. If I was a paid reviewer and got a free review copy, I would review it fairly and still note that the price is too high considering many who will be interested in this already own it on other platforms. Plus it's a 6 year-old game.

@jasonp: I think you may have misunderstood the appeal of the switch to people like me, which is to say the army of people who grew up playing on the SNES, the master system, PlayStation, N64 etc. We love games, we favour gameplay over graphics and we are all firmly knocking on the door of middle age which means we're overworked, we never get to sit down at home to play a game because we're ferrying kids about and when we're not ferrying kids about, they are playing nonsense like Fortnite on the PS4 we bought with some hilariously misplaced notion that we'd ever have the chance to play on it.

We also spend hundreds and hundreds of hours a year commuting in trains, sitting in airports or on planes, or snatching 20 minutes while we wait for the children to finish cubs, or swimming lessons, or whatever. And there are millions of us. We never played Diablo 3 on the PS, or the PC, or anything else that meant we had to be static. We're the ones who are fine to pay to play a port we never had a chance to play before, and the switch is absolutely perfect for us. I'm thoroughly looking forward to getting Diablo III, given that I haven't played a Diablo game since the original one on a friend's PC when I was at uni 20 years ago, just like I hadn't played Doom since I played Doom II on a friend's PC at school nearly 25 years ago, so I loved the port on switch.

@batman2504: Dood I lived in Chicago for 11 years (just moved out this year). I spent countless hours playing video games on buses and trains (first on the Vita, then the Switch). I've owned many portable consoles and have always loved portable gaming. You don't have to tell me the value of those portable platforms.
That being said, that's not the topic I am commenting on here. The topic is that this game is overpriced. Many other Switch games are also overpriced compared to editions on other consoles.
This doesn't seem to be an issue for you, and that's great. I am not going to try to tell you how to spend your money. I think we as gamers should not support this kind of cash grab, but that's just my opinion.

@jasonp: Why? Everybody knows what the price is whether they've played the game or not. If you reviewed the GAME, instead of the price, folks might be able to read the review and form their own opinion about whether Diablo III was worth $60 on the Switch.

It just sounds like you want this review to agree with you.

@Mogan: Why WHAT? You are talking nonsense, and are veering into troll territory.

To say the price of something doesn't matter is disingenuous. So if the game was $100 nobody should mention it? That makes no sense.

@jasonp: The price of games fluctuate almost right away. Putting the price in your review dates your review and makes most of it worthless. And btw, people don't care about cost. If they want something they'll pay whatever is being asked. Just ask apple how that works for them. "wahh this laptop is too expensive!"-JasonP

Some online idiots thought the switch was too expensive but it's selling great at $300.

@jasonp: Nobody said the price doesn't matter. I said everyone already knows what it is. They don't need you to tell them the game isn't worth $60, they can make their own decision on that, but only if you review the game so they can make an informed decision.

And for somebody who says they wont review the game until they've played it, you seem to have no trouble telling everybody it's not worth $60.

Am I the only one not making a fuss about 720p on portable mode of the switch?

I am finicky to a certain point but to me, 720p is pretty decent for the 7" display of the switch!

I wouldn't want 720p stuff on a 55" screen but for a 7" screen, it makes the "dots" small/sharp enough to look just fine!

I play my switch mostly in handheld much and I'm not blaming graphics on anything.
If it can run 60fps on 720p it should be amazing!

@silv3rst0rm: Nobody's criticizing Diablo for being 720p in handheld mode. The Switch's screen itself is hardware limited to 720p, so it would be literally impossible for the handheld resolution to be higher. The criticism is about how muddy the graphics get sometimes in handheld mode. It doesn't sound like it's enough to ruin the experience, but it's certainly worth mentioning in a review.
