Diablo 3: Rise Of The Necromancer Review

  • First Released May 15, 2012

Raising hell.

It had me at “you can blow up corpses.” Rise of the Necromancer provides a fantastic new character class for Diablo III in a dark wizard who loves the dead as much as Alice Cooper. As such, this downloadable content provides a reason for dedicated fans of Blizzard’s hack-and-slasher to revisit the game, and it even offers a little nudge for newbies to finally get with it and play one of the best action RPGs of all time. There’s one important caveat, though--all you get here is the new necromancer class and his undeadly accoutrements.

Still, playing as the necromancer offers an entertaining new way to experience the original Diablo III while also reviving a beloved character from Diablo II. This goth-inspired sorcerer stands out from other Diablo III classes thanks to his grim appearance and incredible battlefield abilities. The necromancer is an absolute powerhouse right from the start of the game, courtesy of a host of skills that let you wreak havoc. Soon after you start your adventure, you'll have a troop of skeleton warriors trotting by your side, slicing and dicing all comers while you hang back and raise the corpses they left behind as makeshift grenades via your Corpse Explosion skills. Detonating the bodies of fallen foes is endlessly satisfying, because of both the geysers of gore and how you can chain explosions, slaughtering huge numbers of enemies in strings of kabooms.

And the necromancer doesn’t just excel at blowing up corpses. A wide range of skills allow for varied playstyles; you can also let summoned skeletons and spirits do the heavy lifting while you use the Siphon Blood talents to leech enemy health and restore your own. You can wade right into melee combat or take a step back and fire off the ranged Bone Spikes or swing the mystical Grim Scythe. The Necromancer also offers some frills that allow you to sport big skeletal wings, don a custom portrait, have ghoulish pets scampering at your heels, and use over 30 new legendary items.

In short, this is a great character pack. The necromancer comes with a lot of depth and seems well thought-out. The one lingering concern is that the new class might be a little overpowered, but that’s a minor worry, given that most players will be using the goth-and-guts spellcaster for a runthrough of what’s likely a very familiar campaign in a game they know extremely well. Challenge probably isn’t as big a concern as novelty and the sheer fun factor the new character brings. The visual presentation is also extremely well done, offering a perfect balance between cartoon showers of blood and the dark grotesqueries of playing as a guy who revels in death.

No Caption Provided

But it’s still just a character pack. Despite the title, Rise of the Necromancer doesn’t offer any new quests, campaigns, or storylines. The name is more than a bit misleading, since it leads you to expect that there’s a little more (rotting) meat on this (animated and coming right at you) bone. And for $15, you’re right to expect more. The one slight saving grace when it comes to value is that the DLC arrives at the same time as the free 2.6.0 patch, which adds features to the core game like Challenge Rifts, new zones, and new bounties.

If not for the price, Rise of the Necromancer would be easy to instantly recommend to fans of Diablo III or anyone with even a passing interest in trying out a classic hack-and-slash RPG. Still, this is a fantastic character pack that adds one of the best, most enjoyable classes to the existing game roster.

The Good

  • New Necromancer class is a powerhouse loaded with corpse-exploding mayhem
  • Provides new incentive to give Diablo III another run-through

The Bad

  • A little overpriced at $15 for what’s basically just a character pack
  • Lacks any sort of new quests or additional storylines

What this game needs right now isn't new content created by Blizzard, it's modding capability, which means an offline-only mode and LAN option availablility. Want to keep your game alive on the PC platform? Either spend like crazy to keep churning out new content or let the community do that for you. And seriously, with how polished Diablo 3 is, I see no reason why modded content can't breath new life into the game.

Just take a quick glance at Diablo 2. People are still pumping out mods after mods for the game, with some mods containing even more content than the base game itself.

Blizzard has been updating D3 for free for years. This is a fair price to pay for a decent character. Love the Necromancer.

Diablo 3 feels like it checked all the boxes, so why is Diablo 2 still so much more fun?

@sbaltys: No modding. No game without modding capability can thrive on the PC market. Look at D2, it got tons of mods, and a great number of them has even more content than what D3 has to offer.

Making the game online only is what kills it.

@doremonhg9x: I disagree. I never modded D2, I always played it online, and I still love it.

@sbaltys: Well maybe for you and for a certain small part of the audience, but the majority of the D2 player base already finished everything they could in vanilla D2 and without mods, the game can't keep their interest for so long

@sbaltys: For me its partly because you can't switch skills on the fly, so each character is more meaningful.

@Michael1571: I bet he struggled with the decision and the review itself.

How do you review a single character class expansion without boring the hell out of your readers? answer, you can't.

The price debate is fair. On one hand, I think 15s for a character is too much, but on the other hand, blizzard has and continues to improve from the core base game for years, costless, whereas most other developers be them either industry giants or small indies would have dropped the ball long ago.

@julianboxe: Then again no one asked them to make the game online only, most people were angered by this and didn't buy the game or stopped playing it, the game right now has a small player base.

An expansion of just 1 character is merely asking for charity in my opinion, or testing the waters for bliz style pc dlc, which is most likely the case since D3 is now on console so they might be looking for ways to introduce more dlc.

@Klyern: The game most definitely does not have a small player base, I don't know why people keep saying this.

@irishinstigator: Hmm a while ago i read that Canada is the world's 2nd best county to live in while Switzerland ranking 1st place. US on the other hand is sitting at 7th place and my county Australia 8th. I don't know about US but my government mostly represent cooperates and refused to upgrade telecommunication infrastructure properly so we are stuck with third world class internet connection and services.

I really wish we could at least get an hour trial or something, I'm extremely love it/hate it with the D3 classes and as such, very hesitant to pay for just one class. With Reaper of Souls it was easy as you got a new act, higher levels and all that typical stuff, but here..not so much.

Being able to try the class, if only for an hour, would be a good idea.

It's Blizzard. Even if it's just a DLC character pack, it will se more play than most games could even wish for. That is why a review is warranted.

I haven't played Diablo 3 myself, so I do not care about this particular DLC. But I don't see how it's hard to understand the reason why it got reviewed.

@AzatiS: to each their own, its about a 7 imo...average, nothing to balk about but for those still playing I'd see it is better then nothing anyday new class is warranted and much wanted for quite along time. that alone warrants a review i mean this site has already started reviewing movies so...if thats ok then I dont see why a DLC (small) update for a free online arpg doesn't warrant a review

It is a fun character/class to play. This sort of paid DLC (and price point) I think is fine. If you don't buy it all you miss out on is really a character class. There is no major impact to the game from not buying this, but if you do buy it then it can reboot your interest in a game you may have shelved.
