Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition Review

Demon in the details.

When it comes to Diablo, one should expect a sense of finality when an upgraded version features the word "Ultimate". After all, where do you go after defeating The Devil? Developer Blizzard's answer--in the Reaper of Souls expansion--was a villain that was the closest thing to Death. Unless the studio can come up with an expansion to vanquish a tax collector, it's safe to say that Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition is as final as it gets. Thanks to two years worth of PC version fixes, wise console-friendly UI adjustments, and a number of exclusive social features, this also happens to be the definitive version of Diablo III.

Diablo III's bleakness is so comprehensive, one can't help but admire Blizzard's dedication. If you're not engaging in conversation with downtrodden and pessimistic townsfolk, you're fending off a seemingly limitless stream of demons. It feels all the more poignant when you walk on floors fully covered in corpses in Reaper of Souls. Given that the apocalyptic tone and art direction is so pervasive and focused, it's remarkable that the darkness doesn't feel overbearing or monotonous.

The feeling of item ownership in Diablo III is an awfully fickle one, much thanks to the game's swift pacing. When new loot appears so often and in such great numbers, your ensemble of optimized gear can completely change over the course of 30 minutes of adventuring. Yet Blizzard has ensured there's no waste: outdated items can be salvaged by the blacksmith or sold to the merchant in order to play for the blacksmith's training. Memorable items can be stored and you can endear yourself to friends by mailing them useful gear. For Blizzard, giving items a life beyond the battle itself is an art form.

Mailing gear is just one of a suite of exclusive social features for this edition, and I have no reservations in proclaiming that Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition is a candidate for the most accessible multiplayer game of 2014. Cooperative sessions allow low-level players to join experienced friends and reap the benefits of fast level progression and early access to better items. If you don't mind playing the story out of sequence, co-op let's you play later chapters based on the host's progress, and let's you continue your solo progress from that point without even needing to play through the middle acts. It's an uncommon practice that would normally cheapen the experience, but this method of fast-tracking makes it easier for newcomers to appreciate the series' appeal. Diablo III is immensely replayable, with some credit due to the post-campaign Adventure Mode and the staggering selection of 10 difficulty levels. The risk factors in these difficulties are superbly balanced; Normal is the path of least resistance, while each subsequent level above offers enticing and fitting rewards of experience and gold.

Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition is a reminder that you can never underestimate the effectiveness of a killstreak counter. While the PC version did provide a final death count after you pulled off consecutive kills in a short span of time, this update offers a rush akin to the hot-dog-eating contest at Coney Island. After 10 kills, a pop-up keeps a running count until the streak expires, and the more demons you kill, the greater your experience multiplier. When there are enough monsters to push you to 50, 75, or even 100 kills, you and your friends will transform from heroic explorers into bloodthirsty murderers. Diablo is many things to many players, and if you've come to the series because it gives you a rush similar to that of the Gauntlet franchise, Ultimate Evil Edition is bound to quench that thirst.

The killstreaks are part of a larger scheme of improvements meant to enhance momentum. Between the steady stream of demons and treasure goblins that lure you into unexplored areas, the building blocks of momentum have long since been laid down in the PC version. With the d-pad, you can now sort through new loot without having to open the menus, making it easier to drop gear more suited for your friends. For those sharing the screen on a single couch, loot has been earmarked for specific players and classes, creating one less reason to go into your menus. Beyond the killstreak onuses, there are other temporary atrribute improvements that result from destroying objects or killing specific enemies. Ultimate Evil Edition's message to you is, "Keep killing, you can color in the map and sort through your loot later." And it helps that there aren't any loading times during individual quests, and there is nary a frame rate issue, even when the screen is packed with scarabs, ghosts, and demons. Not even dropping from the heavens and killing 25 beasts simultaneously with a holy hammer slam will reveal any performance issues.

Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition is a reminder that you can never underestimate the effectiveness of a killstreak counter.

When you do take the time to color in a map, it never feels like a waste of time, even if you're not the obsessive compulsive type. More areas means more monsters, and more monsters means more loot. This is the basis for the top-down view of the standard action role-playing game; how Diablo III stands out is in its pacing and how it manages to stave off boredom. Maps are labyrinthine but are never yawn-inducingly large. You never stay in one experience level for long and the rewards for leveling up are worthwhile and practical enough that you become that much more motivated to reach the next level.

Beyond the menacing hooded reapers and new quest content that can stretch into dozens of hours, one of the key draws of Reaper of Souls is the blessed crusader class. Conveniently accessible at the start of Diablo III, this holy warrior is perhaps the most well-rounded class, and as such, is a user-friendly choice for newcomers. The crusader's abilities in melee and ranged attacks, along with the support of high defense, underscore the challenges and tradeoffs of the other classes. The demon hunter, for example, is proficient at ranged attacks and is a superb contributor to any party, yet this class proves difficult to use during a solo playthrough.

No Caption Provided

Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition feels like the happy conclusion of a two-year public beta, with the initial purchasers on PC bearing much of the grief with the auction house and the slow pace to reach level 60. Those who have held off up to this point will benefit the most, while those who got a head start on the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 versions will be able to transfer their saves to their new gen console of choice. It's just a shame that some newcomers won't appreciate what the early adopters went through to make the fantastic game it is today.

The Good

  • Exceptionally accessible to newcomers
  • Well-implemented social features
  • Dungeons and fields rich in bonuses
  • Monster killing begets more monster killing, loot, and experience
  • Lives up to the Ultimate name

The Bad

  • Some classes aren't as suited as others for solo play

why was this even a 9, did blizzard pay this site off? This site used to be credible w/ the original crew back in the early 2000's now the reviews can't be trusted.

It is impossible to, objectively, give a 9 to a game that has turned the franchise from ARPG to Hack'n Slash. To evaluate games as: "yes, is a complete change, but is funny" are we, the users, we can put notes based on our feelings, but journalists must evaluate objectively, a game that changes its genre is not only an attempt to scam, means also that will be "fun" for certain target, but not for the original players, means leaving behind the original players that made it famous.

The best thing about Diablo 3 is that you can sit down, play the game for hours, and then completely forget about it for 1 year, and then again get back to it without any trouble.

The true fun in this game is to find the optimal spells and abilities, and to use them successfully against hordes of enemies. If you are bothered about storyline, character progression, etc., you came to the wrong game.

@chris120379 I've never played a Diablo game before, and this one looks good. Shadow of Mordor is basically an Assassins Creed rip off, so I'd go with Diablo.

Well I rented this and to me and my wife it is pretty much mindless hacking through enemies just to get gold and loot you don't really care about . The story is forgettable and most the time I forget there is even a purpose to why I'm in a dungeon slaying mindless enemies. You don't even have to tap the x button. Just hold it down and your character does the rest. I wish I had rented shawdow of mordor. Hope that helps

I'm glad that someone actually gave this game a good review for once. I constantly hear people tell me that they don't like Diablo, which proceeds to me getting enraged. Yeah, so maybe it is just a hack and slash, but that's what is enjoyable about the game. Most people, especially busier ones who have school/work to worry about, do not always have the time or patience to indulge in a fully thought-provoking game. Its nice to just be able to run through levels and obliterate everything in your path, and not having to waste hours upon hours just to understand concepts. The game is meant to be simple and repetitive, and the game series has ALWAYS been that way. People who portray this game as bad have just gotten too afar from classic game concepts.

Hey guys, I was debating on buying this game on my PS4 this month. I've got nothing on my list for the next month and I'll bored as hell playing through my current already-completed games again and again. I normally play solo. Need some advice!

Is it worth buying for the ps3 if I have the origional D3 on pc with 1 character at 60? I mean...I would feel bad wasting that $60 I paid for the pc version and then to switch to ps3, but idk...that's where my friends are at now and it's not as fun alone

Why would you want to play 60$ just for a few tweaks? Just wait for PC patches or expansions... if the changes are worth it, they will probably carry them over to PC (although the fact that they haven't probably means they feel like the PC version is just good as it is).

If your friends are on PS3, i suggest you to get new, better friends. =)

Bought the D3 on PS3 now playing RoS on PS3. I have to say RoS is way way better than D3. The loot, the replay value is just insanely addictive. If you love looting in Borderlands then you'll love looting here. Adventure mode never gets old. Playing the game on Torment is fun when you have the items and all your powers.

This weekend I noticed a fun new feature: Occasionally you'll discover items that are "Legendaries for your Friends". You can't use them or sell them -- you just click on them in your Treasure menu, and each item says who it's for, and off they go. Similarly, your friends send you little trinkets from time to time as they play. ...so in a way, even when your busy schedules can't line up, you can still game with friends in D3:UE.

I got this on PS4 after having owned the original D3 on PC (which I gave away, so haven't been able to play D3 for about two years). I still remember the original Diablo and DII way back, and spent tons of time on the game back then.

Now I'm a busy dad who struggles to even be a casual gamer. What I love about D3 UEE is that it lets me feel like a Really Good Player. It's easy to find gear and leveling works pretty fast. I'm about 25% into Act II and basically never die. Gotta love it. :) I find that for me, the game plays much better with a gamepad than with keys.

@Jock9 thank you for not tearing my head off so rare on GS

when i was a kid i had the same problem as you, lucky to even have a pc and could not upgrade it myself or ask the family to. so i was also a console fan right up till this gen.

now i am able to do what ever i want with my pc.

that said, other then the auction house nonsense, its the same game it has been on every platform yet. so this one has a few tweaks and the dlc that does not detracted from the issues that make this game junk in the first place.

one the story got stupid alot having to do with the "lord" of terror now sashay girlishly through the game. (not lady of terror doesn't have the same ring to it eh).

spells and attacks got dumb ed down massively from what should have been in a game made in 2012 (its not just d3 alot of games suffer from this)

and a whole myriad of other gripes i will not bother with but if you like it who am i to judge :)

@suppaphly42 @Jock9 I was a little different than you two in the fact that my dad being a computer programmer always had accounts on his high end machines that I could game on. But with the ps3 did for me was it took gaming to almost the same level as PC gaming but with a better controller, and EASE of use. Yes you might be able to get better graphics on a PC, yes you might be able to mod games and do all sorts of crazy stuff.....but on my PS3 and now xbox one my games ALWAYS work, I never have to adjust setting or worry about upgrading, I spend the little time I have gaming which is very nice. I agree with Jock that this game is feels amazing on a console and I actually prefer playing with a controller vs playing with a mouse and keyboard on PC.

so i'm late to the party but i will still give my 2 cents D3 on pc and on consoles is junk it is an affront to what diadlo is, was, and should be.

how it got a 9 i will never know nor will i believe it. the A.U.R of 7.2 sounds closer to 5 this game should have gotten also

i think the person who decided to turn diablo into a female ( honestly hes been a he in 2 games already ) should punch them self to sleep every night till whenever.

@suppaphly42 Mate I disagree, I own the Ultimate Evil Edition on PS4 and to be honest, I disliked the version released on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 last year. The auction house nonsense, and always being unbalanced.

The Ultimate Evil Edition, on console is available and accessible to people like me who won't fork out for a PC to play games, I did it before 2000 and for the next few years. I constantly had to take the rig to PC World, who would fix it and slowly games I wanted to play were above the low settings I had on the computer.

As a kid, I was just lucky to have a computer in general so I wasn't going to ask my family to upgrade the rig, then the PS2 and Xbox Original came out and for me my problems were solved by consoles.

Since then I've never looked back, and I have enjoyed Diablo 3 on PS4. I am 7 hours in, with a warrior and find it fun, enjoyable and deep enough for me.

You disagree, mate you're entitled to your belief and I respect it I just disagree as a former PC gamer, and an owner of both Xbox and Playstation consoles.

I bought it for the xboxone. This game reminds me of Marvel Ultimate Alliance so I love it. Seems like the game takes a decent amount of time to beat also. I'm about 6 hours in and my achievement says I only have 33% of Act 1 completed. As for the game play it's very action filled. Really like the different skill upgrades you choose for each character to fit your play style. 9/10 for me

I bought this when it first came out on PC. The experience was ok at the time. Even though I had the PC version with the latest update I decided to give the console version a try...I have to say this is the best way to play. The controller is simply the way to go. It reminds me of Gauntlet and I see a lot of gaming hours on this version.

I am enjoying this game, I bought it two days ago and I am about six hours into it and have reached level 16 as a Warrior.

The controls are smooth and simplistic on the PS4 controller, and I am enjoying unlocking skills, and finding loot.

I'm enjoying it, and there's still hours of gameplay to go - still have to reach level 70 :)

Worth the money I paid for it.

Great game on PS4. I love everything about it; the graphics are stunningly better than the (360 version I had) and the frame rate is steady as can be. The revamped modes and mechanics give this game a huge lifespan, at least in my mind. Diablo was meant to be played on next gen (current gen, now) consoles.

I signed up for a gamespot account just this morning to discuss this very game, but already I'm ready to leave. This is the same old, fabricated PC vs. console war that makes zero sense. Both PC's and consoles have pros and cons and to have blind loyalty to just one variation of gaming means your very closed minded, and are missing out on 1/2 of what gaming in the modern age has to offer. They are both machines that play games. sheesh.

Playing Diablo on consoles is like being stuck in eternal easy mode, and classes that can't be dumbed down will never suit solo play.
