Elex Review

Albs are the least of your worries.

As a big, open-world RPG, Elex shows great ambition. The world of Magalan is a fractured yet beautiful place, having spent the last 150 years recovering from the devastating impact of a comet. It’s not your typical post-apocalyptic world, showing the signs of rejuvenation that makes exploring its heavily scarred, mountainous surface an enticing and occasionally captivating proposition. But despite this, a disjointed story, unresponsive controls, and frustrating combat mechanics consistently suck the life out of Elex, making its 30-hour campaign too arduous to recommend.

You play as Jax, a widely feared former Commander within the Alb faction, the game’s main antagonists. Albs are known for their addiction to Elex, an element that has permeated through the planet since the impact of the comet, which makes them both immensely strong and emotionally void; the perfect soldiers. Driven by their dedication to their leader, The Hybrid, and his directive to gain control of all the Elex in the world, they begin an aggressive reclamation of the planet, waging war on the other factions and building giant Converters to rip the Elex from the ground.

The Alb Directive demands the punishment of death for failing a mission, and when Jax is deemed to have failed, he is put down, albeit unsuccessfully, by another Alb commander who leaves him for dead. Having woken up some time later--a fact that is poorly communicated through the course of the intro--with his armor stolen and the residual Elex gone from his body, Jax begins his search for a new place in the world. The Alb’s savagery is a gripping premise of its own accord, but it never really lives up to the potential of its setup.

Where Jax goes from here is entirely up to you, though you are given a little direction by way of Duras, a Berserker warrior who leads you to Goliet, the main Berserker settlement. Peaceful settlements dot Magalan, as do raider camps, mutants and other assorted creatures who have been transformed into ghastly beasts by the Elex that has ravaged the land.

You can learn unique abilities from each faction, like casting magic or suggestive mind control through dialogue, once you’ve proven your worth. The Berserkers retreat to nature, transmuting Elex into Mana for magic and using it to revitalise the scorched planet, while the religiously bound and technologically advanced Clerics utilise Elex-powered technology built upon remnants of the old-world. The lawless Outlaws live off the scrap of the desert, while all three factions live under the threat of the Albs' aggression. Appeasing their needs is no easy feat, though, largely due to the balance of difficulty in the game’s opening chapters.

Starting on the 2nd hardest of the four difficulty levels, it didn’t take me long to wind it back to normal, and then to easy. But regardless of difficulty level I felt hopelessly underpowered, even against enemies that appear early on, so much so that the only way I felt I could make significant progress was to run from as many encounters as I could. However, avoiding combat doesn’t help in the missions where you’re forced to fight.

Feeling under levelled in an RPG isn’t the problem here, rather it's that there's no real way around it. Any time I would find a newer, stronger weapon, I’d try to equip it only to be denied by my lack of certain skills. There are five main attributes you can pour your skill points into, and most weapons require you be at a minimum level with at least two of those attributes.

Upgrading weapons feels equally trivial, as doing so also affects their stat requirements and can put them well beyond your character’s capabilities, rendering it a pointless pursuit. This becomes less of a problem in the late game, but it wasn’t until around 20 hours into Elex that I felt marginally comfortable jumping into a standard, open-world encounter.

Even then, there are still some real issues with the game’s controls and combat that present themselves early; something Elex never truly recovers from. Melee combat feels cumbersome, with Jax’s quickest attack requiring a hefty wind up before the swing. The auto-targeting function doesn’t differentiate between friend or foe, and when combined with poor hit detection and slow animations, it causes all manner of problems when fighting next to groups of friendlies. Ranged combat is a little better, but similarly suffers from some problems with hit detection.

Most frustrating is when you successfully hit an enemy with either a melee or ranged attack and it does no damage whatsoever, at least until you’ve hit it three or four times. Initially I thought this had something to do with my stamina meter being drained, but that just stops you from attacking in the first place. I never did work out the precise reason why this happens, but it’s stunningly frustrating as it makes nearly every engagement feel horribly unbalanced, overshadowing Elex's better qualities.

While character models and faces leave something to be desired, much of the environmental art is incredible. Separated into distinct regions, Magalan is gorgeous. From the green, flora draped lands of Edan and the canyon laced deserts of Tavar, to the volcanic region of Ignadon, the layout of its heavily cracked and damaged surface feels superbly hand-crafted. The details can lead to occasional frame rate drops, especially with lots of characters onscreen, but it’s hard to deny Elex’s wonderful art design. The addition of a jetpack to help you traverse mountainous regions, despite feeling a little clumsy, is also a nice touch.

No Caption Provided

Some of the inter-factional rivalries are interesting on the surface, with politics between clan leaders and in-fighting providing a bit of fun through dialogue and faction missions, but the overarching narrative rarely proves to go anywhere significant. Some of these missions touch on thought-provoking themes, like the idea that, despite being of the same faction, one person’s morality doesn’t always equate to another’s. Despite the interaction of different factions being a running theme through many of the game’s quests, Elex doesn’t have much more to say on the topic.

The main story quests aren’t quite as interesting, and are riddled with bugs in their presentation. Jax’s back story is slowly pieced together through memories presented as cutscenes during moments of exposition, though the transitions between these are jarring at best, with some cutscenes occasionally not playing at all. Numerous times did I come out of a cutscene only to find the world tearing itself apart and my character falling through the floor, either crashing the game or requiring a full restart and forcing me to replay the same section over again in the hopes that it wouldn’t fall apart.

Elex's world is no doubt enticing, but the good moments are heavily dispersed among some rough technical problems and odd designs that only serve to frustrate. The game offers an incredibly designed world and the basis of a compelling RPG that disappointingly fails to live up to its potential in almost every way. For a game that relies heavily on its combat for progression, it feels overwhelmingly geared against you, and with the added technical issues and lack of a compelling story to tell, Elex takes the wind out of its own sails at nearly every turn.

I've had the chance to play Elex these days, and frankly I'm quite disappointed by the review. Who plays Piranha bytes games knows what kind of game they are and saying to be "frustrated" by the weakness of the character means having a casual gamer approach to it, not a reviewer one. I insist on this: Elex, like all the PB titles are not for CASUAL GAMERS, unlike "Skyrim" for ex.(don't get me wrong, I love Skyrim).

The reviewer should know why Jax is so weak, the story is detailed about that, and finding a way to strenghten back is your challenge. Elex is a very deep game and the mechanics require some pondering to be understood.

Like in "real life", when you spend some energy and reasoning you are in for a more satisfying rewards, unlike easier deeds, which are just a pastime.

To the reviewer: replay it, replay it at the hardest level.

I played Elex 2 first then started playing Elex and I have to say Elex is horrible. Very difficult to complete quests in the beginning, combat is bad and unbalanced, leveling up is vey slow and can be difficult to get due to not being able to complete tasks or kill things. Even trying to explore the world is hard due to the amount of enemies you can’t fight because you get killed with one hit. Cant use any decent weapons due to the Attribute costs, which you can’t get because you can’t complete much of anything in game. After several hours I quit because it was not fun playing and got boring with nothing to really do except run around looking for stuff. If I would have played this one first I probably wouldn‘t have played Elex 2 thinking it would be just as bad.

After playing The Witcher 3 +DLC's, Skyrim, AC: Origins +DLC's, Horizon Dawn (yeah i like openworld/rpg) I'm hoping this is a challenge. Played Dark Souls 3 but sucked at it, not much better at Bloodourne.. ;( Tried for months at those 2..

A 4 is generous. This is one of the worst games I’ve ever played. I can’t believe all of the comments saying this piece of shit is better than a 4. These comments were the reason I bought the game. I got it on sale for $15, but it’s not even worth that. The controls are awful. When you use a potion, the controls reverse and you end up walking backwards towards your enemy so that they can easily hit you while you’re drinking that potion. The only reason I ever die is due to just dumb, unresponsive controls/bad camera, and if you love playing games that regularly dip between 0-15 FPS, this is the game for you. This is the last time I listen to people who don’t review games for a living. This comment section is riddled with people who have incredibly low standards.

@ALFREDPOTHEAD: Pills are exactly what’s needed to enjoy this game and overlook the plethora of flaws it has. This game is absolutely awful. One of the worst I’ve ever played. A 4 is generous.

Did Jim Swinbanks cup Bethesda's scrotum when he was slurping the snozberry?

This game is great, and the majority of the comments in the comments sections of every "review" that I have read are positive.

The difficulty in PB games predates Dark Souls by many years, with their original release, Gothic. People who whine and complain, do so because they aren't gamers. They are weak freaks who like to pay-to-win and rely on walkthroughs and cheat codes. It is why "AAA" games are all visuals and no gameplay. Morrowind and Fallout 1 & 2 were AD&D personified, but that requires a lot of thinking, so they dumbed it down for people like Jim Swinbanks, and at the expense of REAL gamers.

So the gaming MSM is on the attack, because real games like Elex threaten the bottom line of rehashed, dumbed down crap that companies like Bethesda release OVER AND OVER AGAIN. I literally read comments from retards who said, "I bought Skyrim on release day, and bought the other editions, and the VR edition, and I would buy it again for $60 if they release it on the next console."

It is another symptom of the plague that is liberalism, where everything is about feelings and pleasure stimulation over mental stimulation and actual, logical thought. To THINK is too much work for these lazy gamers.

@scythan: I wholeheartedly agree! It's what I just said in my opinion about the review. PB games are not for casual gamers.

One of the most unfair reviews ever written on Gamespot. For me, this was the best game of the year, by far.

The game is hard. Especially early. Especially if youre trying to be ranged (like i was). But this game is nothing like dark souls, and I dont understand the comparison bc combat is NOT the focus. Its a survival game for the first 10-15 levels or so (and that can be 15-20 hours into a game, if not more), and combat isn't even where you're going to get much xp - later on it becomes a way of getting items for crafting, etc but at the outset just try and live in the world, meet the characters, factions etc. I love the atmosphere this creates, trying to avoid entanglements, or sneaking around enemy groups to get to objectives, calculating how much a fight would be worth, and the like. The open world is extremely well done, it is varied (unlike fallout), and exploring feels fun, somehow, not a chore - it all somehow makes it feel worthwhile.

Combat can be a little glitchy, and I have had the game crash on me exactly once. Otherwise its run smooth. The graphics/art aren't mind blowing, but are actually pretty nice. The quests are really solid, but the menu system itself can be a little annoying - for instance, on a side quest for Eva, once you finish the primary mission, you have to remember what she told you if you want the achievement attached to it bc the quest actually appears to continue even though it is no longer in your questlog (this may be an easter egg thing, i'm not sure).

Personally, I have really enjoyed this game. It takes awhile to bloom though, maybe 5+ hours before I was really sucked in and then woah. It does remind me alot of the Gothic series, as well as the Bethesda games.

As someone else pointed out, your actions matter, they can impact the game, and it can take a very long time before you realize what you did. It forces you to live with the decisions youve made, which personally I usually don't do. This makes it infinitely more replayable in my opinion. More to the point, the game makes it fun to figure out how it works and what works best and is fairly forgivable otherwise (like you can't build a bad character, even if you switch from melee to flamethrower, min-maxing doesnt seem hugely important).

Its a rough diamond. I'd highly recommend to people who enjoy open world games. A score of four doesn't really compute for me.

I really don't know what games this reviewer plays, but if Elex is a 4, most games of this year shouldn't even have gotten a 2.

It's a gem, a rough one indeed, but still a gem, and it may be an ungrateful 4 here on Gamespot, but damn... This is still one of the best games of 2017 for me personally, right after BotW, Persona 5, Divinity OSII and Yakuza 0 (yes, it comes before Horizon on my list, though I haven't had the time to play Nioh yet). Anyways, I have never ever disagreed that much with a review on Gamespot than I do with this one.

I'm also sure, if an experienced gamer and games reviewer like the guy that left a while ago (VanOrd was his name or something, I really liked that one's reviews) would review this, and not a newcomer, it wouldn't be nowhere near as bad of a review as this.

I bought Elex day one for PS4. I've been playing as much as I can and I've logged about 45 hours so far (*default difficulty). I am really enjoying this game. I love the combat just as it is. You cannot button mash and expect to win. Swing when you will hit and mind your stamina. Time a strong attack to knock down an enemy to give your stamina time to recharge. If you're button mashing it will not recharge.

Combat matters and you Will encounter enemies who are much stronger than you. This is brilliant. When I see an enemy (or a few) I'll consider if fighting them is worth while. How many resources will I likely spend fighting them? Do I think I can win? I have two grenades; maybe now is a good time to use them? Should I find a way around them? Every encounter takes some thought and consideration. And get this, it also makes the world feel dangerous. That's a great way to build atmosphere. And the difficulty also adds a lot of value to getting better gear and finding a companion to help out. The difficulty of this game makes everything you achieve valuable. And Elex is not Dark Souls hard. Not at all. Mostly just because you don't have to fight that really tough thing right now. Come back later when you're stronger or when you've got some new advantage.

There are so many quests in this game that you will be able to find things you can accomplish at your level. Go find them. RPGs are all about exploring.

I also really like that some quests will likely take you a good amount of time to complete such that if you're surprised or don't like an outcome you can't just load your last save and do it differently. The game is good at making you commit your actions. Your actions have consequences and you can try to shape the world to your likely but not everything is in your control. This is how you keep things interesting!

Elex has crashed on me 2 or 3 times. So yeah, it's got some rough edges and I'm still really glad I made this purchase.

I would tweak a few things if I had my way but if I have to give the game a score I would say 8/10.

Two hours in at least. patch applied on the ps4. I'm really enyoying it. Only bug so far is having to wait for loot from fallen loot, chests, etc. Maybe that's been fixed. Graphics are pretty good. Not ps3 as some haters have suggested. Theres a lot of dialogue but its a rpf ffs. Im playing on easy having read the reviews of the difficulty. Its actually easy but i've hit a difficulty curve with a fortress. Maybe there are some difficulty spikes but rpg's have quests and some grinding. some reviewers are obviously impatient. The score of 4 is absurd.

Edit: Attempting a quest without the required stats is nigh impossible. This may put a lot of people off. I guess you MUST complete side quests to get the right gear.

This is my favourite game of the year so far. Yes it has some issues, facial animations being one of them, but you just don't notice. Because you are absorbed in what the NPC's are telling you not how their faces are moving.

Combat is a little clunky. But for the first time in a long time with a game, it is nice to feel underpowered. Not Dark Souls underpowered, but old style MMO wander into the wrong area and you are toast underpowered. You can tackle one on one, without too many problems. But multiple enemies become a challenge. You see a large mutant on the horizon and your gut reaction is run. Which is great. You are always scanning for enemies and never quite sure whether or not to press forward. Keeps you on edge.

And combat, I have yet to die and thought I was not to blame even though it is a bit clunky. I failed to pop a potion in time, or I attacked when I should have retreated. Never felt like I have just been mashed because the enemy is so much better or things aren't responding. There are like higher level 'named' versions of creatures as well which keeps you on your toes. What you thought would be a simple encounter can end up with you running for your life if you pick on the wrong thing.

Jetpac is fun as well. Especially when there are things to be found on top of roofs, or cliffs, normally inaccessible places. Biggest problem with Destiny 2 for me is there is nothing to find really even if you go searching.

The quests are quite good IMHO, early on you have to think if you are being told the full story. And already, within a short playtime, I have come across quite a few situations were I might have done the wrong thing for the right reasons. Had I blindly just followed the quest being offered. Loyalty can be bought and there is a sense of unease as to whether or not you are doing the right thing.

Overall loving it so far. Great RPG, deserves better than a 4 ... at least a 7. And it is a shame a 4 will put a lot of people off this game. If you like RPG's and you like post-apocalyptic/Fallout type of vibe mixed with magic/tech ... I would imagine you will enjoy this game.

So "the good and the bad" reads like a review for a modern Fallout or Elder Scrolls game save the fact Bethesda hasn't made a good world since Morrowind. And PB gets rewarded again with a crap score when Bethesda would have gotten a 9 for putting out the exact same game for $20 more.

I really like this game, despite it's flaws. Once you get the hang of the combat system (for me, it took roughly 7 hours...), and get to know the land, you'll be satisfied if you like Gothic 3, for example. There are many easter eggs to be found, many well written characters and twists based on your decisions. The voice acting and the music is average, the graphics are sometimes beautiful, sometimes downright ugly, but I've encountered NO crashes or game breaking bugs so far on PC, 15 hours in. For me its a solid 7 or 8, the type of game that sucks you in if you give it a few tries and enough time.

I bought it, glad I did. Really enjoying it at the moment. Lots of stuff to find, lots of NPC's to talk to, recipes, lore ... yep my sort of game.

Combat only experienced it briefly so far. But the game more or less tells you at the start that you won't survive unless you get better armour and weapons. And you are not going to get better armour and weapons without a lot of work.

Game seems to have some depth, which is a welcome change after playing Destiny 2 ...

I like the look of this, the difficulty concerns me though. Saw one remark from a player who said they had died more times in Elex than all the Dark Souls games put together. But it looks like a good RPG. Never played any of their previous games so just don't know with this one. I don't like the Dark Souls die all the time vibe, just find it frustrating because to me timing a move isn't so much skill based as reaction based. And as you get old, like me, your reactions slow down and you just get frustrated.

But Elex on the whole looks like an interesting world and I play RPG's more for the exploration, the lore and the story. Not sure whether or not to give this a punt or not. Not fazed by the score, just whether I can put up with it until I get to a comfortable level.

@Fallenlords69: Its not like DS is that much of a reflex based game.. Most DS players know every enemy movement , every line they can take to evade , and most fight is dodge, get around, hit, dodge ,get around , hit... that is a method they use on EVERY enemy. Just look at some of the gameplay videos on youtube. Its laughable. when you have to get naked in a game to use a certain enemy AI fault to defeat that enemy... that suppose to be a problem.. And its hard to call something an RPG , where a level 1 character is pretty much equally strong as a level 40 character. DS is like a statussymbol for gamers , to show their "hardcore gamer" tag. Just tell some hardcore DS fan, that you used a trainer to beat the game , just please try it! They will not talk to you for a month! Its a trial for them, not a game. And it was reviewed as a trial , and not a game. PB games have none of these faults, and their gamer community is much much better. Gothic 3 was basically taken to a next level with a gigabyte worth of community patch, where they solved every problem the game had. And Im sure if not the developers, the PB community will solve the problems in the near future with this game too.

@timmyp1982: No patch fixes every single problem a game has (obviously), I also did not said that, but in Gothic 3's case, it did fixed most of them. BTW if you got nervous about what I said about DS , you kinda' proved my point about its community :D . Also, there was a review about DS 2 I think from a different perspective, but from a gamespot reviewer, and that review basically said what I just did in my last comment. I also played trough the first game, so I do know what I'm talking about. Also Im testing demons souls for the RPCS3 with the 4k upscale. I have yet to disprove my belief about this series...

@Mogan: to decide how well the voice-actors did their job is a very subjective matter. As a hungarian, I always go for a german version first. So I really cant judge how the english voices were. Im saddened to hear that it was bad...

@Banyek: Can't get on with Dark Souls or other games of the same ilk. Bought them all, but lucky to get past the first boss I am that bad. For me it is slow reactions and pressing the wrong buttons. I attack when I should dodge, dodge when I should attack ... you get the general idea.

Elex looks interesting. I gravitate more towards RPG games now, always use to love FPS first and foremost. But now I like to just explore, read the lore, experiment with crafting etc etc. Think I will give Elex a punt ... see how I fair.

@Fallenlords69: this review has to be the prettiest 4/10 they ever wrote. It sounds better than some of their 7/10 reviews lmao.

Been playing since day of release, closing in on level 30. I also play on ps4 PRO, it's not nearly as buggy as stated in this article, yes there are some minor flaws, but nothing one can't live with when the rest of the game is the most rewarding RPG in years if you ask me. It's flawed and hard, but still a gem. Last time I had this fun with an rpg was Dragon's Dogma. Minus it's flaws it's an easy 8 if you grew up in the nineties and want a good old rpg where you actually need to know what you're doing.

@millionsedge: I'd say, generally, yes, but in PB's case they've been making this same game, over and over for years, so I think ELEX is probably more or less how they intended it to be.

These guys have always made buggy, questionable games. Not surprised by the score..
