A dominating performance.

Formula One has been stagnant in recent years. With the domination of the Mercedes team all but guaranteed since the beginning of the hybrid-era, new rules have injected some much needed spark into the once unquestioned pinnacle of motorsport. F1 2017 is a virtual reflection of that renewed vigor. The wider, faster and more aggressively styled cars are designed to be driven harder; a fundamental shift that brings with it a greater adrenaline-rush than any of the previous F1 games have managed to offer. Along with a greatly expanded career mode, a host of memorable classic cars and a litany of race options, championships and game modes to choose from, F1 2017 goes above and beyond expectations.

The bread and butter of the Codemasters F1 games has long been the career mode, which lets you create your own driver and guide them through their racing career, and F1 2017’s is no different. Aesthetically it’s been buffed out and expanded, adding new animations and team interactions, and showing off more of the infamous F1 paddock all while adding a grander sense to the occasion. For a series that had nailed the atmosphere of a Grand Prix some years ago, these additions add another layer that’s easy to appreciate.

The new upgrade system is another step up from last year, allowing you to focus your team's R&D efforts on new parts in four key areas--chassis, aerodynamics, powertrain and durability. Where you decide to focus your points largely depends on who you drive for. Go with a team like McLaren and you’ll need to focus heavily on improving the woeful Honda power unit. Whereas for a top tier team like Red Bull or Ferrari, you might be more methodical about how you spend your resource points, focusing instead on areas you might be slightly weaker than your competitors. F1 2017 improves on past entries by being the most transparent entry in the series, giving you more than enough information to directly compare performance to your rivals.

No Caption Provided

Resource points are earned over the course of a race weekend by meeting your team’s set qualifying and race objectives, as well as completing the practice programmes the team lays out for you in any given practice session. In addition to providing resource points for upgrades, the practice programmes also act as elaborate tutorials, teaching the finer arts of driving a modern Formula One beyond the basics of ‘the racing line’. More complex techniques like fuel and tyre management and determining race strategy are broken down into easily digestible chunks of information, making it easier for new fans to dig into what makes a race weekend so involved.

This level of strategizing extends to the car too, both in and out of the garage. F1 2017 tracks the wear and tear on each component of the engine and the gearbox, in line with real life rules to keep costs down for the smaller teams. Parts aren’t limited, but using more than your allotted amount will result in a grid drop penalty for each infringement. This means having to make tough but meaningful choices about whether to risk running worn parts for a race--leading to greatly reduced power or a possible outright failure--or taking the penalty and hoping you can fight your way back through the field.

When it comes to the look of the cars, they’re nothing short of exquisite. Each of the ten teams and their magnificent machines are modelled down to the finest details, with their sleek carbon-fibre bodywork lusciously reflecting the world around them. Likewise, the circuits themselves also show off the game’s excellent lighting and dynamic weather, which makes a return from previous games. The rare occasions where high-res textures take a moment to load in are a minor blemish on what is an otherwise stunning looking title.

Equally excellent is the feel behind the wheel. Be it with a wheel--which is absolutely the recommended way to play--or a gamepad, the cars feel as responsive as you'd hope. There is still more than enough power to make the back end slide out from under you, but unlike before, the wider tyres and extra downforce mean you can brake later, turn in harder, and get on the power earlier than ever before.

This is starkly reflected on track in the different handling and power of each car. Driving the McLaren-Honda down a long straight is nothing short of harrowing; other cars will power past you like you’re sitting still, forcing you to get your elbows out when trying to defend your position. On the other hand, both the Mercedes and Ferrari feel planted to the road straight out of the garage. The robust physics engine is backed up by some of the best racing AI in the business, who will fight hard for position and make mistakes, but also offer up plenty of racing room if you do manage to get a wheel alongside them.

The V10 roar of the 2002 Ferrari compared to the throaty growl of an old turbo-powered McLaren is enough to smack any nostalgic fan into bliss.

The inclusion of classic cars represents some of the best F1 machines from the last 30 years. From Senna’s 1988 McLaren to Vettel’s 2010 Red Bull, there are 12 cars in total, each of them a world championship winning car from their era. They wonderfully showcase the progression of the sport over the years, and the V10 roar of the 2002 Ferrari compared to the throaty growl of an old turbo-powered McLaren is enough to smack any nostalgic fan into bliss.

Jumping online to race with others is easier than previous years, doing away with the hoppers of old, opting for a more elegant approach. You choose your preference between shorter or longer races, get into a lobby and go. Also back is the online championship, letting you and your most dedicated friends battle it out over an entire season, with or without AI.

No Caption Provided

Time Trials let you race against the leaderboards in any car, modern or classic, in any set of weather conditions. Events are a new feature for F1 2017, offering one-off, downloadable scenarios that drop you straight into the action then comparing your results to others via leaderboards when you’re done. Codemasters have left no wannabe racer wanting with the myriad ways to drive these cars.

Any gripes cast against F1 2017 are minor. Instant replays could last a bit longer, and the simulation damage model could be more detailed and less forgiving. But this list pales in comparison to what Codemasters have delivered, an F1 game that can truly cater for everyone--from sim racers to the newest casual fan.

Codemasters has been on a roll with its F1 series for a number of years now, and F1 2017 feels like the culmination of those years of work. Where F1 2016 lacked a little on the career side, F1 2017 more than makes up for that and then some more. An improved multiplayer set up, a greater variety of race options and straight-up better cars to drive, on top of the stellar career mode and thrilling on track racing experience make F1 2017 simply the best Formula One game ever made.

The only f1 game that I can play all the way through without any problems.

All cars handle very well with the assists and traction control on full, and without slowing you down.

If you want a challenge then take the assists off. Simple, great controller options as well

I am not a good driver but love the driving games. this one is the best car racing game for me and motogp 17 is absolutely superb as well.

Will Xbox one get a separate review, or is it not that important to review on all systems? I've gotten so used to Xbox controller (starting with original project Gotham racing), that I need the triggers for gas & brake to enjoy any racing game. I may try again with GT sport on ps4, but I regret it every GT release when I try again. The ps4 controller is leagues ahead of ps3 so maybe there's a chance I won't hate it, but in that case I have to get on ps4. Anytime I have an option, I get racing games on Xbox. I can't afford to invest in a wheel setup (& honestly don't know if I'd even like it, but if it's more accurate I think I would), but even when I could have I couldn't justify it to myself since I'd want a chair & the gear shift add on, also, & not just the wheel itself (& not just any wheel either. I think the

Ferrari wheel was last one I got close to buying).

Why care about crash damage? This isn't Burnout Paradise...If you are crashing, you're not doing it right...

@topgun182: Don't F1 drivers ever crash then? Anyway isn't that what makes for great racing. You're doing well when you clip the barrier damaging your front wing. Do you carry on racing hoping you wont lose too much time or do you pit to get it fixed knowing you'll be able to lap faster afterwards?

@analgrin: When was the last time you saw someone stay out on a damaged wing? F1 is not NASCAR. Look at the Force India cars. That little scrape put one out of the race.

@topgun182: In the Canadian F1 race a couple of months ago Vettel damaged his front wing on the first lap, took a chunk out of it. He didn't realize how bad it was, blaming poor grip on cold tyres and wind direction, so he stayed out on track, even when the safety car came out early in the race. He pitted later and got it fixed, came 4th in the end. But if he'd pitted to get it fixed while the safety car was out holding everybody up he could have been 1st.

Damage, and getting it fixed at the right time is all part of the sport.

@analgrin: That's ALL motorsports. These cars are finely tuned and most contact ruins the race. Anything is possible, but that wasn't mainstream.

@peterboksic: 1) They had no idea how the cars were going to perform this season with the 2017 regulation changes. 2) They base team performance / car abilities on the real life results. 3) If you're a true F1 fan you'd be interested regardless.

@mcstabstab: Thats what updates are for surely. It still makes no sense to release a game based on the 2017 season half way through the season. You should be able to race the first race of the season.

@peterboksic: It makes perfect sense to release it either mid season or at the end of the season because of official data and car upgrades.

@dudebropartyyo: surely the whole point of the game is to be able to play it the same time as the races are on. screw the official data and car upgrades. That can come later. Play the game as the season unfolds. otherwise its a waste of time for me.

@peterboksic: to be honest, it's probably best to release it, for GAMERS sake, towards the end of the season. So codemasters knows exactly who's going to win the championship. The upgrades on the cars and other variables that happen throughout the calendar year.

@peterboksic: Screw official data? Like you want McLaren winning from the first race or something.

Thats not the point of the game. The point of the game is for F1 fans to enjoy their own F1 career. Some people will go trough quarter or half of the season over the weekend and no one is going to play a race when they on in real life. How can car upgrades come later when you work towards your car from race one of the career mode. Also development of certain things in game starts late.

@dudebropartyyo: Disagree. I would want to play the game most when the real race is on. Makes sense. You can enjoy the career mode with last year's game as well. I would prefer the game come out in Feb with data as close as accurate as they can get. then update as the year progress. otherwise call it f1 2016.

@peterboksic: You're heads full of cartoons, especially if you think they could create the cars in a few weeks from pre season testing to the Australian Grand Prix. To get the game to where it is today 6 months from then is pretty amazing if you ask me.

@peterboksic: You have absolutely no chance of getting the game before the season starts. They don't even know what the cars will look like until a few weeks before the season starts and even then the cars are not accurate as not all the parts are on show. They have to put them into the game with an idea of how fast they are compared to each other in every aspect. You don't even find that out until Australia and even then 1 race does not give enough information. Like I said, Your head is full of cartoons. It is not possible. What I would say is maybe they could have had something sooner than now if everything else was completed but from my experience with the game it is not without its bugs. If it is out now and not perfect it would have been a disaster even 3 months ago.

I would personally love nothing more than a F1 game to come out in time for Australia but it would be an impossible task for reasons above. It is not like Fifa where they could just update the kits ,player transfers and release it. The football season has started and that task with all the information present well within time, that game with a massive massive budget is not even out yet. Codemasters do not have the budget and even if they did, the data to get it out even within a few months of a season started.

What I will say though is F1 2017 is fantastic, probably the best F1 game I have played in my 25 years of gaming. If you are a true fan of F1 it would be a huge loss on your part to miss out.

@simonspearman86: You still fail to understand throught your clouded judgement that i wont buy the game unless i can play it through the year as the season unfolds. I don't care for the fine details. I understand that purists want as perfect re-creation as possible but that's not for everyone. You misunderstand the importance of racing the tracks when the real life races are on. Get the cars and drivers out with last years specs or predictions and update though the year. what is the point playing a 2017 game when the season is half over. Its like watching a f1 race when you know the result.

@peterboksic: Its not that I fail to understand you or that my judgement is clouded. Like I said before I would love for the game to be out before or at least a few races into the season but my point is it just isn't possible for a number of reasons that I stated in my previous posts.

The season is still in full swing and when the game came out, it did not take me long to get to Monza in the career. When they create a game yearly I imagine they could use a lot of assets from last years game to help but this season is very different due to an overhaul in car regulations. Nobody had a clue what the cars would look like a few weeks before and it takes even longer for codemasters to get an idea of how they drive. If they brought a game out with last years car physics with only the new car models and race calendar that would make for a terrible game but that would be the only way they could get it out as the season starts.

If you haven't bought the game because the developers can't work miracles then that is your loss. The game is the best F1 game I have played, period.

No clouds in judgement, developers cant work miracles, enjoy the game.

@peterboksic: having the game before the season starts, that's not a good idea......how,would you know what's going to happen in the 2017 calender? To put it in the game? What if there's some amazing new car upgrade, no one even knows about at the start of the year, a lot of variables aren't even revealed till they are released. You want them to update the game, all through the year to cater for it don't you? They probably have other sht to do, like making F1,2018.

So F1 2017 is better than Super Monaco GP? Grand Prix 2, 3, or 4? It's better than Grand Prix Legends? It's better than F1 1997, F1 World Grand Prix, Formula One Challenge, or F1 2000 Championship Season? And gamepad has laggy input and is undrivable without low assists to keep up with AI? Ok.

@Guimengo1: you don't think it holds up to F1 challenge ? Really? I think it dies. Big time. It actually reminds me of the old PC F1 games. I think they have implemented quite a few things from the PC games. Like live feeds etc. There's things in this that were never in the PC games. Like live commentary. Detailed pit crews. There's a lot more similarities than you are giving credit to. There's tons more in the career modes to. The driving is easier, I'll give you that in the latest F1 games. The driving in F1c 99-02 is so hard, you can skid out just by breaking so slight, it almost feels TO unforgiving.

A New patch for PS4 has been released with an Xbox patch coming soon if not out already.

No word on a fix for the screen tearing as yet but 2 patches in 2 days is a good start.

They said they are aware of the low res texture issues occurring and should have a fix for this soon too.

Check the codies forums here for updates in any case for anyone wanting to know.

http://forums.codemasters.com/categories/f1-games-general-discussion

Yes, they are working on PC fixes too.

@Chernnunos: Codies have finally acknowledged the game's problems. There is an interim patch on PC at least for the crappy network code . How these games are allowed to be released in such a sorry state and still manage to have the faults hidden in a review is the strange thing.

@Dark_Mits: Too bad with football (the real one) they have a dozen leagues and tournaments to choose from.

From the looks of it Codemasters is just cementing their title as the one and only official F1 game company seeing how F1 will start the e-sports partnership. I wonder how they would react even to a mock-up game with imaginary track and driver names. Maybe F2 game could come from a competitor?

so usually i got pissed after an hour or two and ditch the game and never came back, that's why racing games like NFS was more interesting for me cuz i can race without braking

@ginxeno: I call BS. As another NFS player, racing without breaking will not see you get past the first 10% of the game. Unless they have implemented some new "easy" mode where the AI stops entirely and waits for you to pass the finish line.

@Dark_Mits: Then you haven't played them all. I got through Hot Pursuit (2010) and NFS 2015 without braking and completed them. Crappy arcade drifting handling model saw to that.

Praying to the car gods that NFS Payback goes back to the Underground/Most Wanted etc handling model.
