Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age Review

  • First Released Oct 31, 2006
    released
  • PS4

Automatic for the people.

The Final Fantasy series has always been about reinvention, and the twelfth incarnation embodies this to such an extreme, that you might catch yourself wondering if this is a really a game from the long-running RPG franchise at all. Not only is it deserving of the name, but it's an RPG through and through, where monster hunting and exploration of spacious locales effectively feed into its stat-based progression within an ensemble cast of colorful personalities. Like its predecessors, Final Fantasy 12 puts its own spin on how chocobos, summons, and characters named Cid play into its epic journey. With its long awaited remaster ready for release, Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age puts its best foot forward with a wealth of improvements and changes, delivering a fresh experience even if you've memorized the path from The Phon Coast to The Tomb of Raithwall.

For those who thoroughly enjoyed the PS2 version of Final Fantasy 12, The Zodiac Age is not only a remaster, but also a remix. Keen eyes will notice subtle tweaks to enemy locations and even changes to the selection of merchant goods. Some of these modifications are in service to the character-enhancing License Board, which itself has been overhauled from the original game in order to give each party member more distinctive jobs and abilities. Along with the inclusion of a Japanese voice track and improved loading times, the option to toggle between the original and reorchestrated versions of Hitoshi Sakimoto’s exquisite soundtrack is a welcome feature. Lastly, the improved high definition visuals brings out a fetching painterly look to the characters' faces. As a PlayStation 4 exclusive, The Zodiac Age stands out as a feature-rich rerelease on a platform with a bountiful selection of lesser remasters.

Now Playing: Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age Video Review

Even if it were an untouched port, Final Fantasy 12 would stand out for its distinct handling of familiar elements. For instance, there's a thriving society centered around hunting, a gig economy where skilled fighters of many races vanquish the game world's most hostile creatures. Being recognized and awarded for taking down bounties effectively weaves a part of FF12's story with any player motivation to complete the bestiary. Equally notable is the emphasis on thievery, which is also narratively tied to the resourceful nature of Vaan, one of the playable characters. You won't go far if you relied solely on money from defeated monsters and treasure chests. Riches instead come from the sales of loot you acquire from the creatures you take down. Much like Final Fantasy 9's Zidane, Vaan's stealing skills helps players develop an appreciation for the series' long line of talented but sometimes overlooked thieves.

No Caption Provided

Further driving the distinctiveness of Final Fantasy 12 is its setting of Ivalice, an established universe with its origins outside of the core series. And like other games based in Ivalice, specifically Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy Tactics, 12's plot often feels like a middle chapter of a grander tale yet to be told. It's so rich in backstory that keeping track of names and places during the initial hours can feel overwhelming, though the further you play, the easier it is to get a handle of the intricacies of the lore. What you really need to know at the start is two small kingdoms, Dalmasca and Nabradia, are caught in the crossfire of two larger warring empires, Rozarria and Archadia. Of the countless individuals affected by this period of upheaval, six characters--all of whom come from vastly different backgrounds-- form your party, uniting for a common cause to de-escalate this continent-wide conflict.

Perpetuating this middle episode vibe are the playable characters themselves, who have been appropriately compared to the cast of Star Wars: A New Hope. As examples, Ashe is the captured princess and Basch is the former general in hiding. Balthier is the self-serving pirate with a price on his head and his partner, Fran, has been described as Sexy Chewbacca. Their intertwined backstories and resulting encounters allow for chemistry and conflict as the often engaging narrative unfolds.

Reinforcing Final Fantasy 12's timelessness, The Zodiac Age brings in an enhanced Gambit battle system, which itself felt ahead of its time upon its first release. By stringing together a prioritized series of if/then commands for each character, battles unfold with a semi-automated flow where you can vanquish beasts without pressing a button for minutes on end. The immensely user friendly interface fittingly looks and feels like a Fisher-Price styled introduction to programming, where each player-chosen behavior is simply assigned a specific target, whether it be an ally, themselves, or a single enemy.

No Caption Provided

One would think that the hands-free aspects of The Gambit System would deprive you of agency and engagement but it in fact creates the opposite result. Since you're still responsible for every character's actions, the thrill of seeing your handiwork unfold and emerging victorious never gets old. It allows for experimentation and risk-taking but The Gambit System truly shines when you stick to sensible and tried-and-true RPG battle tactics. Remember all those times you died in battle because you ignored a status ailment and thought you could get one last attack in instead? This system removes all manner of impulsiveness and for many, offers a glimpse of the RPG combatant one aspires to be, free of impetuous behaviors.

You don't get your hands on this system in earnest until three hours in, which is one hour too many. Yet this onboarding period is notably improved over the original game thanks to the option to double or even quadruple the speed of play. This is just one of the many new features that makes The Zodiac Age ever more engrossing. In a game that features respawning enemies, every hostile area becomes more inviting. You're motivated by growing your party's stats at an accelerated pace even after you've explored every corner and opened every treasure chest in a given region.

While its enhancements do not translate into a brand new game for existing fans, The Zodiac Age is nonetheless invigorating. For an experience that can last over a hundred hours, the subtle tweaks therein go a long way in showcasing Final Fantasy 12's grand trek in a new light. Its epic, lore-abundant story and its time-tested Gambit System should also appeal to those who missed out on the mainline series' trip to Ivalice the first time around. And thanks in part to the new audio and speed options, The Zodiac Age is an ideal definitive edition: one that improves the game over its original version across the board.

The Good

  • Innovative battle system is engaging despite its semi-automated flow
  • New features and options improve an already superb game
  • Playable cast are individually memorable with rich backstories
  • Classic facets of Final Fantasy are well-presented through new lenses

The Bad

  • Delayed introduction of The Gambit System feels unnecessary
  • Names and places can be a lot to take in during the initial hours

About the Author

Having put 200 hours in the original Final Fantasy 12, Miguel was confident that playing through the first 30 hours of The Zodiac Age would suffice in evaluating the new features and improvements. A complementary PS4 code was provided for this review.

This game still has good graphics, but the game play is still horrible. I'm hoping that Insomniac Games will buy up this title, and scrap this really bad concept.

My review is 0/10 stars.

FFXII's story is actually much closer to The Hidden Fortress (the 1958 Akira Kurosawa film that inspired Star Wars) than it is to Star Wars.

$50 for an HD version of a game that came out 10 years ago. Just lol. Don't get me wrong - I loved FF XII, but $50?

Meanwhile Blizzard is releasing a remastered Starcraft for $20. That's about the price point I would expect.

Tried to watch a stream of it but it looks devoid of anything interesting and has low challenge.

@PinchySkree: The battles that you face while doing the main story do lack challenge but there are areas where mobs put up tougher fights even early on if you stray off the beaten path. Also some of the hunts get kind of nasty later, but overall, yeah they could have dialed up the difficulty a bit. The game doesn't really force you to override your gambits with manual input very often at all which is a shame. I'd actually roll without gambits a lot of the time if the battle menu wasn't so sluggish.

I seriously can't put it down. I would recommend to anyone who hasn't played it to pick it up. People are complaining about the price tag-- but honestly, it's a big game with a lot to do and well worth it. It's the last really good FF game to come out. One change I would have liked to have seen is, when selecting classes, change the characters costume to reflect class... and when you eventually select 2 different classes, make a combo of both.

@collbanth: Are you saying that it won't combine them? Do I have to pick one or switch back and forth once I pick a second class?

@valgaav_219: no sorry, I was referring to only the appearance of your class (ala FFV or bravely default). You start off choosing one class and later have the option of selecting a secondary class.

I'm having a wonderful time with this game, I love the deep ability trees. The story, voice acting, and written dialog are atrociously bad, but hilariously so, in a MST3K way. Combat and rpg character development are really how this type of game should be done - or at least, it's one good way to do it.

I am not, btw, a FF fan at all - played both the last two and couldn't get into them. Souls games are my favorites along with stuff like Baldurs gate and Fallout.

I just learned that a license for this re-release is the equivalent of US$49.99.

This is too much.

@Gelugon_baat: I think it is if you've already played it. But this is my first time, and thus far, I think it was well worth the money. Probably the best game I've played this year so far (and probably one of the best FF games at that).

@collbanth: If you have never played it I suppose it would be worth it (even though you could find the original for probably less than $10).

The fair price for a remastered HD game is typically $20 though. $50 is way too much. I will not buy if they release this for PC at same price point.

@ecs33: I paid less than 50 on amazon, but yeah it is a little steep. But passing on it, is passing on something really great.

But, also to you point about the original price, you could pay 10 for it, but you'd then have to find a ps2 as well which would end up being more than 50

Hopefully this time around unlike the original PS2v. one can change the X aka Horizontal movement i.e. pushing the Right stick to the right the camera goes (as I'd call Normal) well you know Right! . If your only playing this game and not any other PS2 or Xbox for that matter game than one can get used to that. Anyway here's hopping that this time out I'll be able to play more than just 1hr. or so of this game. Happy FF gaming all.

30fps cap lazy remaster. they couldn't even get this 10 year old game to run at 60FPS+ on PS4 Pro. lazy or incompetence? maybe both.

Seriously overrated garbage.

3/10 The Zodiac Age's new features doesn't fix up Final Fantasy XII with the amount of bad design choices, shallow battles mechanics and poor story telling.

@killersushi: its a remaster and its 50$!! is not overpriced the game is 11 years old and we got the International ver and everything was improved, graphic, sound, Voices, NOT VA they are the same but the quality of the sound makes them sound better.......i guess that counts as Sound and is a Big game, upgrade all this takes a lot of time and work. And No is not the same as crash remaster of 3 old PSX good games on one collection, content wise is still behind than FF 12.

Any game over £30 is over priced in my eyes, but games that offer a lot of hours in to it like TES, GTA and others are most certainly worth the extra cash.

I'm glad the whole zodiac job system made it properly out of Japan, the new jobs alone make for a much more interesting and balanced experience. Everything else is icing on the cake.

I remember playing this game for 10 hours straight the night it came out, then 10 more the day after and the day after that, what an engrossing game. Once I hit the giant crystal though, it just ran out of gas and I couldn't maintain interest. I tried a couple times and never got past it, hopefully the new systems will keep me going through that last 30% or so of the game.

FF12 is a great game with alot going for it artistically, the narrative and the characters, but it's hard to hold your nose up in the air for 80+ hours while you grind through harmless mobs and defeat boss after boss without pressing a single button or making a single decision. It's funny how the game has become sort of a martyr of the FF series, the gold standard of all JRPGS, the last true FF game, its only tarnishes blamed on interference from higher-ups.

I don't really see it that way. If you think this was the last great FF game, go give that monstrosity FF11 a whirl and see how it flies. If you think modern games like FF15 has diluted the gameplay systems beyond reproach, go ahead and see if FF15 will beat bosses for you while you go do something else. And don't tell me that setting up gambits is in itself some sort of magically satisfying experience, here it is for all team members: attack -> player's target, under 40% health, cast cura. That's all you need for 99% of all the fights in this game.

On the other hand, I do enjoy FF12 overall and am absolutely thrilled to get back into it.

@Angryduck67: you don't have to use the gambit system. you can play it just like traditional FF games. Just like you don't have to put a game on "easy" mode. just because the options there don't mean you have to use it.

@Cl0ud: i know its just a joke/snarky sarcastic comment but, why do you care what other people like...I truely never understood the "I wanna do ___ to people who don't like the same as me" comments lol....you know what I want to do with the people who like FF12 ? nothing...lol Whether they liked it or hated it....ff12 is a good game, and ....far be it from me to argue the fact but....it just is...I've been gaming 30 years, and I've played some real doozies (all bias aside)...but FF12 doesn't even come close to what I consider a bad game...bad game = COTS lol (1996/PSX/PC) Chronicles Of The Sword, go play it (Or better yet read the gamespot review) its almost hilarious (this was back in the days when a review was 2-3 small paragraphs) nearly 20 year old review. But its still funny ...that is a bad game. Never judge a book by its cover.

Can't wait to replay this game again. I actually bought this when I originally had my fat PS3 years ago. I never had the chance to finish it though since my apartment at that time was broken into and my PS3 was amongst the many items that were stolen at that time. I do remember enjoying playing this game (and was maybe halfway through it)before that unfortunate robbery occurred.
