Forza Horizon 2 Review

  • First Released Sep 30, 2014
    released
  • XONE

It's not how you stand by your car, it's how you race your car.

Some guy is standing next to my Lexus LFA at the end of my racing triumph. He doesn't seem to be as excited as I am, even though he apparently represents me. He's the generic guy behind the wheel, the catatonic crash-test dummy whose presence at the end of every championship win mystifies me. I call him Gary.

Fortunately, Forza Horizon 2 isn't about Gary. For that matter, it isn't about me, either, but instead about the cars, those marvels of engineering, those occasional works of art. I approach the rarest vehicles in Horizon 2 as I might in real life: with careful reverence, taking caution not to blemish its high-shine finish. It seems a natural reaction to me. I just spent over a million dollars on this Bugatti Veyron Super Sport; a single fingerprint would be a real shame.

Of course, cars like this aren't meant to just be ogled: as beautiful as they might be, both in real life and in the remarkably attractive Forza Horizon 2, they are wild metal beasts, and you are their tamer. Like any game with the Forza name, this one understands that to appreciate the joy of racing, you have to first know the animal, hear it purr, and know what draws its ire. You aren't going to be hugging curves in that Camaro, but you can drift sweetly into them, after all. And once you wrestle this hulking creature of steel and fiberglass into submission, it is yours to command. Victory in Horizon 2 is sweet not because you beat the other racers, but because you and the vehicle overcame your differences.

As in its predecessor, the game's tracks are carved out of an attractive open-world, this one based in the French and Italian countrysides. You're here to participate in the Horizon Festival, a typical driving-game framing device that leads you from one race to the next, and puts you in control of one car class after another. The chatty narrators grow tiresome in their attempts to hype you up, especially considering there's no real reason to do so: Horizon 2's atmosphere bursts with adrenaline and enthusiasm. At festival hubs, laser lights flash across the sky, ferris wheels brighten the horizon, and throngs of celebratory crowds cheer your arrival loudly enough to provide lift to the helium balloons hovering above. "Cars are awesome and you're awesome!" proclaims Forza Horizon 2, with so much earnestness that you can't not believe in its confidence.

Planes (not pictured), trains, and automobiles.
Planes (not pictured), trains, and automobiles.

The festival's showcase races are even more exultant. You're speeding alongside a hypertrain, or accompanied by roaring fighter jets. You pass one hot air balloon after another while an operatic aria warbles from the soundtrack. This is the life! And what a life it is, to give you access to so many wonderful vehicles. The credits you earn as you race and explore the overworld come in quickly enough to ensure you can usually afford the vehicle you require to compete, and many activities, such as the bucket-list challenges that have you catching air for points or drifting with abandon, temporarily provide you with the car you need, free of charge. Each vehicle feels and looks so right. Even a seemingly unimpressive vehicle like the Subaru WRX STI has its delights; I'm in love with the common but irresistible pops from its exhaust. It's not a difficult vehicle to come to grips with, however--not like the Ariel Atom 500, an extreme track toy whose lightweight slipperiness demands the utmost patience and finesse.

And thus we return to the taming of the beasts. The curvy, multi-terrain tracks require a subtle touch and forward thinking. The easy-ish AI doesn't put much pressure on; no, it's the car/track system that you overcome, not the computer drivers. Horizon 2's liberal rewind system allows you to erase silly mistakes during this process. There are places to enjoy the open road, but in festival races, the fun comes not from the breeze rushing through your hair, but from the tension of a demanding course, and the resulting relief of having effectively manipulated a two-ton machine into winning position.

No Caption Provided
This is Ben. He's like Gary, but a snazzier dresser.
This is Ben. He's like Gary, but a snazzier dresser.

Races take you off the pavement and into the fields and dirt, where you must learn new ways to control your mount. It's here that Forza Horizon 2 gets in its own way, encouraging you to rush over hills and through meadows towards your destination, only to throw that all-too-common knee-high stone fence in front of you. It happens as you crisscross the open worlds as well; that sudden roadblock can put a real damper on the fun, given how little warning there often is. Luckily, a good road trip can put you back in the right mood. As you rush from one destination to the next, you're accompanied by AI representations of your friends called Drivatars. It's difficult to tell just how well Drivatars mimic the behavior of their real-time counterparts, but given the aggressive approach of a friend's Drivatar--a friend that drives in a similar way in direct races--I'd say that's a good sign.

You may also conduct road trips with friends or strangers. Doing so requires you to endure some loading screens; given the inroads made by games like Need for Speed: Rivals, it's disappointing that the single-player progression and online racing aren't better integrated. But the playful banter of friends, and even the silly behavior of strangers, makes a road trip a gleefully good use of the open world. Heading to your goal, like all of Horizon 2's travel, means watching a continued smattering of rewards appear at the top of the screen. Near misses, trading paint, a little bit of air: the game thinks these mundane events are so cool you deserve a reward! Hurray… you bounced a few times in a row, you crazy kangaroo! But how can I be mad at Horizon 2 for celebrating the tiniest of victories? Mechanically, your reward takes on the form of experience points, but the perks you earn are marginally useful; how much victory can you feel knowing your vote for the next destination location counts you twice rather than once? No, the fun here is in the congratulation itself, not in the reward. "Cars are awesome and you're awesome!"

I wear my sunglasses at night. In my purple car. Don't judge.
I wear my sunglasses at night. In my purple car. Don't judge.

Online events involve racing with an occasional dash of king of the hill, where drivers earn a royal title by crashing into the current kings, and then try to retain it as long as possible. This is all in the name of chaotic fun, and it's fortunate that Horizon 2's online launch troubles, which made connecting to others and creating clubs of like-minded drivers a crapshoot. As of this writing, however, online races are running smoothly; downloading cosmetic designs created by other players, however, does not always go according to plan. Luckily, I have still downloaded a number of wonderful paint jobs that show off talents that far exceed my own.

Forza Horizon 2 is hardly lacking in stuff to do, though the best events extol the driver/car relationship, either by demanding precise control, or by reminding you, once again, of its virtual mantra: "Cars are awesome and you're awesome!" Forget the forgettable jams emanating from the various rock and electronica radio stations you can tune to; that’s music for Gary, but not for me. No, Horizon 2 is about careening into the sunset while Beethoven symphonies blast from your speakers, as if you might leap off the edge of the Earth and straight into the arms of God.

The Good

  • Festival atmosphere is easy to get swept up in
  • Wide variety of cars that require finesse and skill to master
  • Online road trips can be a hoot
  • Gleeful showcase races

The Bad

  • Unnecessary perks system
  • Environmental obstacles can put the brakes on

About the Author

Kevin wishes he reviewed more driving games than he does, and admits to liking the Midwestern setting of the original Horizon a bit more than the pastoral European vistas. He's finished the Horizon Festival finale, but has a lot more to do before he can call himself a Horizon 2 completist.

Gary, lol. I like that F3 reference! :) The game deserves a 10, though. Never since NFS Underground did I have so much fun with a racer!

Great review, fantastic writing and valid points. But I can't believe this didn't get a 9! The online integration is seamless.

That was a beautiful review. Seriously, it was a joy to read. I just got done playing through the Forza Horizon 2 demo on by Xbox One for the third time and am now determined to buy this game in the coming weeks. I'm pretty much just waiting for any Black Friday or Cyber Monday sales. The game is so much fun!

I bought this game day one, it was a 9/10, i freakin loved everything about it and couldn't put it down, but now i don't even want to play at all. Right now, after my play today this game is a 6/10, here's why.

DRIVATER !!!! When this came out the cars were racing clean and far, it was great, but the last week suddenly the cars have gone absolutely crazy. I love driving clean hitting all the sweet spots in the corners, like i do in Moto or F1, i love racing clean. The same thing happened with Forza 5. Please i beg you, let me turn Drivatar off and have the same AI it launched with.

This is closer to a wrestling game than racing game at the moment. Please fix this guys.

Oh this will always review well, the reviewers get in early with the good AI.

@dylan35 I'm the same, racing games don't keep me interested for very long and I'm a month into playing this one. Love it. The negatives didn't jump out at me either.

Gran Turismo 7 (2015) on PS4 = More Cars, Life like Graphics, and more realism then any racing game.

Forza 2 on Xbox 1 = Half the cars, 720p graphics, arcade driving experience.

@Terminator95 Just checked this review out, and I see you've been here. You're quite determined to blindly nark on Xbox aren't you? You clearly haven't played this game. It's amazing, far better than any racer Sony has ever put out, yet you claim that their next racer, released some 2 years from now will somehow be better. Got news for you buddy, GT hasn't been relevant in quite a while. Forza is continuously getting better and better. This game has even convinced my GT fanboy friend to buy an Xbox and play this. I believe his words were "this is so much better than GT". Coming from a car enthusiast lol. This is in 1080p by the way, and while Driveclub looks better, the graphics count for nothing because it's an average game at best, with less than half of the content and fun Forza has to offer. Just quit dude. Don't hate, and don't get any negative feedback. Your blind, uncalled for approach to gaming is just pathetic.

@dani_i89 @Terminator95 Id still rather have a PS4, BUT I admit this game looks good and I would definetly like to give it a try I own a 360, and I'm not a fanboy by any means Diablo on PC, Handheld Nintendo titles, Wii U, 360, PS4 - I just dont have atm time or money to invest into Xone (along with everything I already have) but I admit FH2 does peak my curiosity (and I haven't had a racing game in god knows how long) I'm usually on RPGs, or action/adventure games but I lately have been in a sort of 'state' where I wanna play a racing game, I dont care about the techinal aspects sim racing, vs arcade w/e - but this does look great, seems to run great too last demo of a racing game I had was Forza 4 which I liked, but seems this game is more along my lines

@Terminator95 haha, yeah, that vaporware Gran Turismo 7, two years at least after launch, is going to be really impressive. Maybe. Meanwhile, Horizon 2 is 1080p, you dolt, is the open world racer the PoS 3/3.5 never had, and is out now to great reviews. Go play with your little Japanese Sailor Moon Box, neckbeard virgin fanboy.

@Renoo27 Just start with Horizon, both games play pretty much the same. Both great in their own right. If you like other Forza/simulation games (and love racing on actual tracks) pickup Forza 5 at some point. No need to play it first though, jump into Horizon now!

Driveclub seems to have been universally panned, mainly because it can't get anywhere near Forza 2 - it's just light years ahead in terms of .....well, everything really.

barn finds are not the only way to get barn find cars, at least in the 360 version.

i wanted the willys jeep and when a jeep sponsored race showed up, it would just let me buy the jeep (pretty cheaply even).

glad it did, because i was at only the fourth barn find i think the jeep was the last one.

@rad6666 im buying ps4 for other things like bloodborne, axiom verge, witcher 3 (which will run better on ps4) not for racing games, I own a 360 and maybe one day I'll get and xone I get whatever consoles interest me...and being PS4 has outsold over the course of the last 16 months (minus 2 months were xone came ahead saleswise) I'm not a fanboy I play PC/handheld/consoles so It doesnt matter to me personally but I prefer the ps4, even IF the ps4 has FH2 thats not a deal-breaker for me I havent played a racing title in years, though I admit I enjoyed Forza 4, so I'm sure this is a great game but now its 2015, and with big titles on the horizon (no pun intended) like Witcher 3, I ...cant see spending $300-$350 for a console just to get horizon 2 when most of my time is occupied between diablo on PC, and soon (to be) witcher 3 on PS4...maybe few more months down the road I'll nab a cheap Xone bundle, I'm not biased or a fanboy as I've said but I do prefer sony (always have) but I also enjoy nintendo and other platforms (handheld/PC gaming as well)

I've invested over 20 hours into the games already, a lot of which is just roaming around looking for barn finds, online free roam, speed traps, bucket list challenges etc.. there is so much to do and admire in this game. All of the above gameplay elements would not be as satisfying if the driving mechanics, rumble effects, physics simulations weren't best in class, which they are. To top it all off you can literally drive anywhere, in FH2 you can at anytime you feel the need to stray of the road and go off into the fields/vineyards/mountain ranges. These fields are the most gorgeous environments ever seen in video games. Moreover, your not alone, as the drivatars are all there doing the same thing and guess what, you can challenge some of the them to a race.

I'm not sure about the reviewers remarks about the perk system, I thought it was another great mechanic to use to incentivise the player to drive with style. No game is ever perfect there are always areas that could do with improving. But FH2 in my view is another instant classic, and will be much admired like the first FH on xbox360 in it's time.

@adnaan I like the game but is it only me that finds the cars looking like they are copy pasted from a highrez pic into a lowerrez pic (background). Especially some colors are really oversaturated and with the shine they pop and make the car look very unatural in the environment. Like the blue ferrari in the vid here. That's my biggest complaint really so no biggie but still... this wasn't as much of a deal on forza 5.

@kadaverhagga @adnaan I have no idea what you are talking about.. My only complaint is not having the option to jump right into a race or playground game without going through either free roam or road trip. Besides that, it's perfect.

@petersonsam If you remove the cost of their offices (which I'm sure are quite onerous), the cost of producing shows and/or video review themselves is negligent.

So almost every game that has had a review embargo placed on it has either turned out bad or not up to the expectations (Destiny recently). DriveClub has a review embargo.

Mini review.

'9'

First and foremost the game is an absolute blast. I've been playing online and offline and I'm absolutely hooked.

Here are my quick pros and cons list.

+ Car list and customization is extensive

+ The setting is large, stunning and quite varied.

+ One of the most social games I've ever played.

+ Festival and radio music is great and varied.

- Shadow pop in and glitches (environmental) sometimes distract from an otherwise beautiful game.

- Load screens can be long

- Ran into some invisible walls now and then. Mostly jumping off ledges with barriers below.

@stickybun Damn those invisible walls(especially going south to Nice where you can get so much air)! I get why they need to be there though and there's enough of the map that's completely open so it's forgiven.
