NBA Playgrounds Review

A shoot and a miss.

NBA Playgrounds attempts to fill the void left by beloved series like NBA Jam and NBA Street. And while it can be a fun, flashy arcade game, it quickly succumbs to its own repetitive gameplay and presentation--with frustrating results.

Playgrounds has only one game mode in both single-player and online multiplayer: two-on-two. Aside from an Exhibition mode used for practice, the bulk of your time in Playgrounds is spent competing in tournaments around the world on one of six courts, styled after real-world cities such as New York and Shanghai. You have to play through three-minute games before your team is able to compete in the five-minute championship, which unlocks new courts and player-card packs that grant you a new selection of the game's 150-plus real players from the NBA's 30 teams.

Now Playing: NBA Playgrounds - Exhibition Game In Tokyo Gameplay

Playgrounds is quick and fun--in the short term. A lot of the game's offense and defense comes down to timing. Once you get that down, it adds a fun sense of rhythm to the game--knowing when to release a shot, the best time to try for a steal, or when to attempt an alley-oop. But a lack of AI responsiveness disrupts that rhythm. Computer-controlled teammates won't always react when you direct them to set a pick or initiate an alley-oop, which can lead to the shot clock expiring or an easy steal for your opponent. You eventually learn that you can only consistently rely on your AI teammate to shepherd the ball while you look for open space on the court.

Despite the fact that your partner is often unreliable, the moments when the AI behaves according to plan can lead to impressive displays of teamwork. You’re rewarded for flashy play during games by pulling off alley-oops, fancy dunks, and stealing the ball from opponents. These moves fill up your team's special meter, which, when full, pays out a random "lottery pick." One such lottery pick guarantees a player's shot will go in from any distance after passing the half-court line, or even if it’s being blocked by the opposing team. Another one awards two extra points for dunks, helping to transform a close game into a four-point lead at the drop of a hat.

No Caption Provided

The hope of getting a lottery pick, as well as the fear of having one used against you, keeps games tense. You may find yourself pumping your fists in excitement one moment, then throwing your controller when an opponent gets a lucky opportunity the next. The give and take of this system's rewards and punishments are immediately apparent and encourage improvement in your overall strategy.

There's a definite feeling of accomplishment in the process of getting better at Playgrounds. Finding a break to make a three-pointer, disregarding traditional rules to shove an opponent away from the ball when they're most vulnerable, or capitalizing on a fleeting opportunity for a flashy dunk all feel great, and smart plays are often rewarded with expressive, hype-inducing animations.

Despite the fact that each character has his own stats, they rarely feel distinct from each other during a game.

Special mention has to be given to Playgrounds' dunks. They're impressively choreographed--your player may do flips, spins, or even knock opponents down in midair, all before nearly ripping the rim from the backboard. Conversely, it’s maddening to watch your opponent do the same when your defensive lapses lead to a creative display of dominance on the court, but in a way that inspires you to consistently do better, rather than to quit.

One of Playgrounds' main draws is no doubt its goofy aesthetic, which is a direct homage to NBA Jam. Unlocking new characters is enjoyable in that you're treated to detailed-yet-stylized takes on real-world players. But despite the fact that each character has his own stats, they rarely feel distinct from each other during a game. You can easily get by using the initial roster, and once you settle on a pair of go-to players, subsequent recruits ultimately feel like trophies on a shelf--awarded for playing well, rather than new tools.

Variety ends with the game's visuals, though. There isn't much else to do other than playing through a tournament. In Exhibition, you have some added options, like the color of the ball or how long a game lasts, but in tournaments, you play the same four rounds over and over across the game's six levels. Getting stuck on a particularly hard final round can be immensely frustrating, given the lack of an alternative mode or palate cleanser. This monotony is exacerbated by the game's two announcers--Ian Eagle and EJ Johnson--who repeat the same corny jokes each game.

Playgrounds' online offering is also plagued by this lack of content, also launching with only one game mode. But playing against an actual person does help alleviate some of the game's repetition. Online games tend to be far goofier and more sporadic, with two players competing not just to win, but to do so in style. Reckless performances in the name of fun gives Playgrounds' multiplayer games a level of slapstick enjoyment not found in single-player.

Even if Playgrounds' single-player mode lacks the unbridled merriment that makes multiplayer so enjoyable, finally getting the upper hand in a tournament is rewarding and exciting in its own way. But even at its best, Playgrounds doesn't offer enough variety to keep you engaged for long. Playing the same game type over and over, with only levels and opponent names changing, quickly gets old, no matter how good they feel in the moment. Even one additional game type at launch might've made the overall package more enjoyable, but as of right now, it might be best to wait for Saber to patch in some variety.

Thanks to the devs for the latest updates that totally broke the only thing that worked : Stealing the ball.

Since the last update it's as if the AI are totally immuned to steals, or whenever I manage to rip the ball off their hands, they're the ones picking it back up!

Yet THEIR ability to steal is MASTER!
I can't go around the AI without getting the ball stealed...

So now we can't rebound, we can't block and we can't steal!
(But AI manages to do so perfectly!)

Frustrating, just plain frustrating!

Does anyone playing this on the Switch get a crazy rumble that sounds like their Joycons are going to fall apart?

Been hoping for an option to turn rumble off or at least tune it down a bit in-game...

This is by far one of the WORST basketball games I've ever played. Seriously, I'd rather play NBA Showdown '94 on the Sega Genesis, than this piece of crap (also, any NBA Jam game leaves this one in the dust).

After a few hours in... the shooting is down right TERRIBLE! I've never missed as many dunks as with this game. The "perfect shot" is laughably random. I like the concept of "leveling up" your players. But the package is REALLY bare bones.. I guess i can't complain too much for a $20 title. Its still surprisingly fun.

I'll stick with NBA Jam Fire Edition on the ps3, that game is a ton of fun and damn near perfect.

Only thing I like about this game so far is the price. Guess it will do until NBA-2K18 releases on Switch this fall.

The criticism around not really needing to use the roster is a bit unfair. Sure, once you have unlocked a few epics and legendaries etc you will probably only rotate through these but I have found on a number of occasions that I have needed to rotate my players to exploit/counter-act the opponents strengths/weaknesses in order to get the win.

@JustPlainLucas: Hey! Thought I'd clear this up -- after several hours of listening to the music and announcing (it's some of the worst I've ever heard in a game), I decided to spend my last three or so hours of playtime with the game on mute. Sorry if the text was unclear!

@blakehester94: Just had to agree with Blake. I am going to try to seek an option to turn off the music the next time I play it but that is just some terrible loading screen/menu screen music. The announcers are uninteresting and not funny.

I really hope the devs take time to fix some of the issues,

@blakehester94:

I don't know what Blake is talking about...

The music is your standard "basketball hip-hop" soundtrack, but they try to match the theme of the court your playing, so Tokyo will have an Asian flair to it, etc. It sounds like more like music recorded for a game vs cutting a studio album. It's not jaw-dropping, it's not horrible, but it's absolutely listenable, and I don't even like hip-hop.

The announcers, although may get repetitive, I never found annoying, and the voice acting sounds legit - like actual announcers, not people reading a script.

Remember, this is an arcade basketball game, not NBA 2K, so the "feel" of the announcers reflects this. I don't know if Blake was expecting commentary on the level of Ernie Johnson or Steve Kerr, but it should never be expected in a game like this. This game is drawing inspiration from NBA Jam and NBA Street, so that should be your reference point.

I'm not playing this game right now, and I wish I was.. That's a sign of a good game. How long that will last, who knows. But some of the comments I've read about shot timing, and rebounding, stealing... How many seconds have to spent playing this game? The game is fun, and worth the $20 IMO. Biggest issues for me, is the delay when in-bounding ball. That and the repetitiveness of the announcers..which can be fixed with spotify and some headphones people.

Anyone here ever managed to grab a single rebound in this game?

The jump animation is totally broken!

Despite the fact I'm standing right besides the basket and jump on the right timing, it's as if the "jump" button/animation was ONLY meant to jump and not grab rebounds...

My character jumps in a very "Static" animation and the ball passes right through me...

It's broken to a point where I try to block "this can work" and if I don't manage to block the shot, I'm standing on the ground waiting to grab the rebound once it hits the floor and if that fails too, I mash the steal button which is overkill at the moment...

This game got serious issues...

Even the very 1st NBA Jam on SNES felt more polished!

Id give it an 8. For a $20 game, I feel its definitely fun and entertaining... definitely reminds me of NBA Jam but its not quite as good. Some polishing and this could be great...

Much rather play the old NBA Jam series (maybe Hangtime, as the game progressively did get better each year) with current rosters. Just take the last good one from that series, and put the current roster in. Whatever bugs or glitches are present...just leave them; it gives the game timeless character. When are these devs going to get that the customer doesn't always care about seeing pretty graphics and clever camera positioning?

Well, you can say that, but I did not even bring up any number, much less make any statements of comparison. The checkboxes for "turn this person's remark on that person" - specifically those for context - have not all been ticked.

Own the game and it's horribly broken. There's no punishment for stealing so you just mash the button down the court until you get the steal. Then if you get the timing down for shooting you can hit 3s from right over half 90 percent of the time . Online is a complete mess and balancing needs to be addressed. You get punished for lay ups as shooting 3s are much easier. Your A.I. Is horribly slow to react to anything. You can't play with friends online at the moment and blocking is far to difficult even with people with 10 blocking. There are some fun moments to be had but I would give this game a 3.5 out of 10. Very disappointed. Hopefully a patch comes out and addresses some issues.

@cejay0813: NBA jam though you could counter the steal with a cross over and you would have to do the animation so if you screwed up it would be a one on two. There's really no speed punishment and no actual hard counter in playgrounds
