Netflix's Resident Evil Review - Easily The Best Adaptation Of The Zombie Franchise Yet

  • First Released Jul 14, 2022
    released
  • television

Come for the zombies, blood, and gore, stay for a story that jumps around in time to tell the tale of the end of the world.

Outside of Sonic the Hedgehog and his plethora of animated shows, has any video game franchise been adapted into TV and movies more than Resident Evil? It's hard to think of one, what with seven different live-action movies and a handful of animated shows and films. Yet still, our fascination with the world of the games and the horrific Umbrella Corporation responsible for its terrors never sours. Now, with the first live-action TV show adaptation on Netflix, we are getting an entirely new Resident Evil story, though one that feels largely at home in the universe.

Netflix's Resident Evil premieres July 14, and after watching the entire first season, it's safe to say that this is one of the "good" video game adaptations that is being bestowed on the world. Like the six-movie series starring Milla Jovovich, it's telling a new story that's not beholden to the events of the games, but with the series' major trappings: namely, zombies and mutant monsters created by an evil pharmaceutical corporation. However, unlike those films, everything that's happened in the video game franchise through 2021's Resident Evil: Village serves as the backdrop for the story.

The show plays out in two separate years: 2022 (before the zombie-infested apocalypse) and 2036 (well after it). In 2036, the series follows Jade Wesker as she finds herself stranded in the middle of a largely abandoned piece of the world, studying the infected. That story slowly unravels, showing just how bad things have gotten and how the nefarious Umbrella Corporation is at fault for pretty much all of it.

Then, back in 2022, the story follows a younger Jade and her sister Billie as they contend with life having moved to Umbrella's owned and operated planned community, New Raccoon City. As you might expect, everything there is truly weird, nobody likes to talk about the old Raccoon City. For those that don't know the games, the T-virus overran the original Raccoon City, leading to Umbrella detonating a nuclear device to take care of their problems in Resident Evil 2.

No Caption Provided

It's an interesting approach to telling the Resident Evil story, showcasing two different plots--14 years apart--with the assumption that they will eventually meet in the middle, filling out the details of how the world fell apart. And thankfully, it's an approach that absolutely works within the framing of the show. It's clear from the jump that Umbrella is up to something terrible with its new drug "Joy," which includes pieces of the T-virus that has created so many infected monsters throughout Resident Evil history. What, you thought Umbrella would have learned from the error of their ways? No chance. Besides, they somehow managed to cover up the last disaster, what's to say they can't do it again?

Watching the head of this pharmaceutical company, Evelyn Marcus, chase profits while justifying using such dangerous materials, it's easy for us to see the inevitable coming from a mile away. Watching it unfold like this, though, is engaging, if only because the other half of the story is entombed in the aftermath of Umbrella's decisions. Seeing Evelyn defend using pieces of the T-virus to Umbrella's highest-ranking executives, only to have the scene shift to a post-apocalyptic wasteland, is jarring in all of the best ways.

At the heart of the show, though, are Jade and Billie. Played in 2022 by Tamara Smart and Siena Agudong, respectively, and in 2036 by Ella Balinska and Adeline Rudolph, we see how time and the end of the world has changed these two--for better or worse. We see them struggle together as they begin uncovering secrets held by Umbrella their father, high-ranking Umbrella scientist Albert Wesker, and see where that leaves them, as 2036 finds Jade on the run from the evil corporation and studying the infected "zeroes" that now far outnumber surviving humans on Earth.

Something that helps this work so well is that these are new characters. We're not dealing with Jill Valentine or Clare Redfield, but instead completely fresh characters in this world. It allows viewers familiar with the franchise to watch them without any preconceived notions of how they should act or what their next steps should be.

No Caption Provided

However, longtime fans may have a bit more difficulty doing that with Albert Wesker. Played by Lance Reddick in the series, Wesker here isn't quite like the sneering, over-the-top villain you remember from the games. He's an attentive father and gifted scientist. However, the secrets he's holding back from his daughter go a long way in explaining who this take on the character is. So while he might seem strange to fans, stick with his character development, because it pays off.

Another thing Resident Evil fanatics are going to be wondering about is, well, the gore. After all, the games and movies are filled with zombies, giant monsters, and plenty of blood and guts to keep things perfectly horrifying. The show doesn't skimp on these aspects, with hordes of infected walking the streets in 2036, a number of notable creatures from the games playing important roles--zombie dogs are just the beginning--and even certain familiar disturbing characters popping up here and there. If the horror is what draws you into Resident Evil, this show should serve your needs rather well.

If, however, you're a stickler for canon and don't like when things diverge from the established plot at all, you might have some trouble with Netflix's Resident Evil. While it is set after the events of Village, it's not going to be beholden to any of the games to come and ultimately reserves the right to remix little bits of the canon where appropriate. Some of it will be explained in a way that might soften the blow, but if you're fully opposed to the idea of a version of Albert Wesker having two daughters and can't make sense of how that could fit into Resident Evil video game logic, the show might be biting off more than you can chew.

No Caption Provided

Still, even if there are some tweaks made along the way, Season 1 feels far more like a Resident Evil story than Halo's inaugural season ended up resembling the franchise it was based on. Unlike Halo, which played the part well for a few episodes provided to press for review before wildly diverging from what fans expect from the series, Netflix's Resident Evil knows where it comes from and is largely living up to the hype.

While this might not be the first Resident Evil adaptation, it's off to a strong start to claim the award for best adaptation we've yet seen. That's not a shot at the beloved movie franchise, but simply a nod to the idea that Netflix's take feels more at home in the video game world. Its storytelling approach of unfolding the plot at two separate points in time over a decade apart keeps things unique and engaging, while tracking the characters through an impending apocalypse in hopeful future seasons should be thrilling to watch--provided Netflix doesn't cancel the show as it has a number of other high-profile series (anyone else remember Cowboy Bebop?). In all, Resident Evil is well worth your time and, ultimately, you may be very surprised by how deeply it draws you into its web.

The Good

  • Telling two stories 14 years apart works surprisingly well
  • The newly-created characters are excellent introductions to this horrible world
  • The video games are used as a story backdrop
  • It feels like a story that belongs within the world of Resident Evil

The Bad

  • If you're a stickler for canon, certain aspects of the show may be hard to devour

It was boring with barely any gore or horror, which is not what you'd expect from anything resident evil. This 1st episode was somewhat cool, but its downhill from there. The 2022 timeline is a cw high school drama with a laughably stupid umbrella security and the 2036 timeline is just the main character on rails being forced into running to or running from the next group of baddies or factions and none of them stick around long enough for proper character development. The only character consistently enjoyable was Albert.

I wish they leaned more in the development and use of joy and the eventual outbreak, but instead we got a wait for season 2 type ending.

Only thing I agree with the reviewer is that they made Wesker actually an intersting character instead of a comic book villain.

Do you guys know what good or adaptation means? Because this isn’t the resident evil movie it just is a movie called resident evil. You do know there’s a difference right? Oh I forgot you guys are creative which means you lack any amount of creativity in this day and age. Yeah just race swap the characters and it’s good, especially if you don’t follow the actual game story! Who would wanna see the game story when going to a movie named after a game? All right everyone. That’s why this movie is doing horribly because it’s shit.

I think it's now safe to say that Chris E. Hayner's review is best described as a hot take (presumably from someone that hates Resident Evil video game canon and lore) that doesn't remotely reflect the vast majority of people's opinions. I mean this thing is, with 12,000+ votes, at 3.5/10 on imdb. Not a single episode even makes it to 5/10, and season finale is currently at 3.3/10(!).

@mdinger: It's weird because IGN also gave it favorable reviews. I'm willing to give the show a shot and hope it's a least some good dumb fun but keeping my expectations extremely low. Although I took the same approach with Welcome to Racoon City and was still underwhelmed.

Watched it all been a fan of resident evil since the 90's this was garbage, surprised to see such a high scoring review coming from a game website reviewer isn't clearly a proper fan of the series.

@gabenz: IMDB rating is currently 3.4/10 with over 8k votes. That’s stunningly low, far below the other live-action adaptations including Welcome to Raccoon City. Apparently “sticklers” are the only people to actually watch it.

If it genuinely does have any redeeming qualities, surely that means it would have been more successful *without* the Resident Evil license?

@Sven_Viking: what do you mean by sticklers? Because when I think of sticklers when it comes to Resident Evil I think of people who want entertainment to match the game not just be named after it. Those are people who don’t care. As far as I can tell the only people actually watching this are people who know nothing about Resident Evil, and even they don’t like it, and reviewer‘s. Those of us who know anything about resident evil are bothering.

@Sven_Viking: To me, what's more telling is the critic reviews. If this show was legitimately good or worthwhile the critic scores would reflect that as they wouldn't be sticklers for canon.

@Sven_Viking: I could as well ask why a new horror/scifi/zombie series needs to carry the name of a successful and well known franchise, when it actually has nothing to do with it?

I guess this whole project was never intended to be "RESIDENT EVIL" to begin with and was something more a last minute decision, when they got the idea they fucked up so badly, so then they made a few slight changes here and there and threw "RESIDENT EVIL" on top of it, to make sure at least the name will get them a few more people to watch it.

Are there already black and bald ALBERT WESKER action figures? Still couldn´t find any.

@wladolfputler: "I guess this whole project was never intended to be "RESIDENT EVIL" to begin with"

This happens often in the industry. I believe it was the case for The Cloverfield Paradox. Might have also happened with 10 Cloverfield Lane (which at least was a good movie with or without the Cloverfield name). I've heard that this has happened with few Hellraiser sequels.

I guess it's worth a shot if they're not confident in the product. A bad product with a big name attached to it is bound to get more attention (in this case views) than a random, no name bad product.

@wladolfputler: They could see that no one gave a crap about their new zombie show and decided to just license out the RE name and slap a few recognizable names onto some random black characters and think no one would notice. Talk about stupid. This has literally NOTHING to do with RE. Like at all. Even the Milla Jovovich films are closer to RE than this and that's not saying much.

@ironhorse89: The Jovovich-REs at least did a very decent job in bringing classic RE-Villains/Monsters to life while staying true to their video-game-originals in most certain aspects, while my biggest complaint would be that nonsense post-apocalyptic story/scenery, especially in the 3rd sequel while already driving off way too far from the original games.

It is a miracle to me how NETFLIX could **** up this weird "RE Show" so bad, since first of all they should have been aware that a RE-Series (for the slight chance of really having planned it as such!) is probably not the best idea at all and changing everything into RE after it wasn´t planned as such, being the even bigger mistake.

They should have probably just dumped the whole project, even when it was way too late for it, then at least they wouldn´t damage their netflix-logo with this painful and cringeworthy disaster.

Studios should seriously ask themself how far they can allow going off into new directions with well known franchises and better talk to fans before they start with their projects rather than risk bathing in a shitstorm at the end.

I don't agree with this. I think a Resident Evil show could work really well if done right. It would allow them to take their time with the story, instead of trying to cram too much into one movie, like Welcome to Raccoon City.

"They should have probably just dumped the whole project, even when it was way too late for it, then at least they wouldn´t damage their netflix-logo with this painful and cringeworthy disaster."

They'll be fine. Netflix releases so much content throughout the year that it's very easy to forget and ignore the bad movies and shows, and there is no shortage of them. The most recent Stranger Things broke streaming records, a bad Resident Evil tv show isn't going to change many peoples' opinions of Netflix.

"Done right" is pretty relative. From Paul Anderson´s perspecitve, all his RE-movies were done absolutely right.

I am also sure the guys who did "WELCOME TO RACCOON CITY" did it as well completely right too.

Many RE-Fans claim that actually no one did it right to this point.

From my perspective, that last movie was pretty close to "doing it right", at least it was better than the first Jovovich RE-movie by Anderson.

@wladolfputler: By "that last movie" do you mean Welcome to Raccoon City or the last Anderson movie?

I give Welcome to RC credit for at least trying to stick to the source material. Where they went wrong was cramming it into an under 2 hour long movie and essentially being a highlight real of moments from the games. Stretch that out over the course of a TV series, treat the source material a little more seriously, and take the time to tell an actual story (along with featuring good actors) and it could work. It doesn't need to be Walking Dead serious, but have some care about the source material

Okay, this is a spoiler but a lot of people are throwing a lot of hate around here especially at Reddick who doesn't deserve it, so I'm not putting this in spoilers. It's important to know so people will stop hating on Reddick.

Classic Wesker IS in the show. Yes, for the exact reason I speculated way back when we first heard about this.

thanks guys for creating this article, decided to create an account just to tell you how wrong you are. this new resident evil series is a woke drama. resident evil is known for being a horror action series. this isn't a good look for the franchise. 5 mins in and i'm already sick of the main character, a rude woman (of colour) who isn't exactly strong but has great plot armor.

i dunno how much money netflix wasted on this but im sure it was alot.

A lot of contrived dialogue and extra thiccc plot armor for the main character.

Music choices are pretty bad.

Seriously think Lance Reddick carries the show more than anyone else.

Can be enjoyed if you consider it a Riverdale/Resident evil crossover.

@DeviantMonster: This is actually a very good take. Pretty much sums it up nicely. Riverdale with zombies and monsters. If you're a Lance Reddick fan, he won't disappoint.

I still stand by my earlier statement that it's better than Halo. At least here you don't see any beloved characters being transformed into edgy emotional wrecks which just looks weird when contrasted with the colourful armaments of the Covenant.

A black´n bald ALBERT WESKER in a RESIDENT EVIL movie is as ridiculously dumb and stupid as a white´n blonde JOHN SHAFT in a SHAFT movie would be, regardless if this series is dumb teenie garbage crap or the best RE adaption of all times.

Fact.

Just don´t know what´s even worse. The fact those hypocrites all of the sudden change genders and skin colors everywhere or that women still get paid less than men and blacks are still treated as a minority...especially when it comes to the police and how they handle black people.

But i guess as long it appears "political correct" in movies these days, it is all fine and dandy!

@wladolfputler: Your take on Wesker's race is completely off. Shaft has to be black because his character deals with black culture whereas with Wesker, race had nothing to do with his story.
