PlanetSide 2 Review (PS4) Review

  • First Released Nov 20, 2012
    released
  • PS4

War always changes.

How important is a first impression? In the case of a video game, a poor one can push you into the arms of another. That doesn't mean that the new game isn't good, or even amazing--but you've now turned away from that game, or postponed your time with it. Perhaps you will return, and perhaps you won't; that initial glimpse stays with you and colors your perception.

Class-based, massive online shooter PlanetSide 2 on the PlayStation 4 doesn't make a great first impression, whether you are new to the game, or have transitioned from the PC version. If you're new, the lack of direction can make the first moments daunting. Tooltips give you some basics upon your first interactions with various terminals and menu screens, but there are terms and mechanics you must come to grips with, and the best way to do that is to undergo trial by fire. Granted, you can get your bearings in a reasonable amount of time, learning what certs are (not a tasty mint, in this particular case), discovering the proper use of a sunderer vehicle, and getting used to the many menus. But if you're new, it's natural to flounder. After all, PlanetSide 2 doesn't even tell you what its three factions stand for or why they fight; rather than engage in some basic world-building to draw you in, the game asks you to choose a side blindly. There's nothing to center you, no direction for your emotional compass to point.

Anti-air turrets giving you a problem? There's an app--er, a weapon for that!
Anti-air turrets giving you a problem? There's an app--er, a weapon for that!

If you're coming to the PS4 version from the PC version, there is no learning curve, but there are other obstacles to overcome. Many of them are minor--but there are enough of them to make you pause and ponder whether these issues shouldn't have been solved, given that PlanetSide 2 is approaching its three-year anniversary on the PC. For instance, it often takes menus several seconds to respond, making you wonder if a button press didn't register--and if you press it again, you could inadvertently queue up commands you didn't intend. (Several times, I have deployed vehicles I didn't want because the slow interface had me repeating a button press I presumed hadn't worked.) The visuals are also a notable downgrade, a sensible sacrifice to keep the frame rate stable; unfortunately, PlanetSide 2 occasionally stutters and hitches during the most intense battles, making the compromise sometimes hard to swallow.

On the other hand, PlanetSide 2's special moments are too special to let these encroaching shadows envelop the game in darkness. Yes, you would reasonably expect the full release to perform better, and to have swiped away the simple bugs that occasionally crawl into view--the way the reddish arcs that indicate you have been hit may not disappear until you log back in, the infrequent but irritating hard crashes, and so forth. But when the war heats up, there's nothing exactly like PlanetSide 2, a massively multiplayer shooter in every sense of the term. The world and its four primary continents (as well as the starting continent accessible only to newcomers) are open and persistent, inviting combatants to fight for control over the facilities scattered across the expanses.

You can equip a number of different sights, depending on how close you want to get to the action.
You can equip a number of different sights, depending on how close you want to get to the action.

You engage others by taking to the air and participating in dogfights, by roaring forward in tanks, and by joining fellow infantry and rushing into ground battle. You're hooked up with a squad as soon as you log in, and while my fellow players aren't nearly as vocal or as coordinated on the PS4 as they are on the PC, it's to PlanetSide 2's credit that you can get involved in warfare mere seconds after entering the world--and that you can understand what your objective is simply by observing the heads-up display and following others into contested zones.

And thus the battle rages ever on. You and other comrades hop into a transport vehicle called a sunderer, trundle towards your destination, and deploy near a facility, hoping that the terrain and architecture protect the vehicle from any keen-eyed heavy troops nearby. (A few rockets and homing missiles can quickly turn a sunderer to scrap, particularly if there are no engineers on hand to repair it.) Once deployed, the sunderer serves as your base of operations as well as a spawn point, ensuring that you and your squad never spawn too far from battle after death. From here, PlanetSide 2 becomes a veritable series of controlled detonations, with the swamps of the continent Hossin and the Esamirian tundra lighting up with artillery and laser fire--but never devolving into an incomprehensible mess off aimless firefights.

The pace of battle changes depending on where the struggle occurs. A base nestled in the hills gives rise to clever sniping and rivers of infantry that participate in a tug of war as one faction pushes upwards, and the other streams downwards to stop it. Outcroppings, rolling hills, and rising towers break up your line of sight from every side, forcing you to be aware of potentially vulnerabilities in all directions. A flat approach, on the other hand, paves the way for a daunting rumble of tanks flowing as one unit towards the contested base. Tanks have a nice heft to them, making it fun to roll over hills and launch artillery at oncoming vehicles. On the flipside, launching a missile into one of those tanks, watching it explode, and hearing that rewarding audio tinkle that alerts you to experience earned is a consistent treat.

You would reasonable expect the full release to perform better, and to have swiped away the simple bugs that occasionally crawl into view.

No Caption Provided

As with most video game wars, your success is never assured, and with loss comes frustration: the frustration of being gunned down by an infiltrator equipped with a bolt-action rifle as you sprint from one doorway to another, the frustration of shooting a teammate as he crosses your path just as you begin firing at the enemy, the frustration of hearing the voiceover explain for the umpteenth time that you shouldn't shoot friendlies. (Thanks, repetitive narrator-man.) Death is rarely an annoyance in and of itself, however. Even if you frequently fall, engagements are too big for you to feel as if you have singlehandedly let down your teammates. If you only rack up a few kill assists in between spawns, there's still a sense of accomplishment. When there's madness in all directions, who can say whether the bullets you landed didn't divert the winds of conflict?

Not every moment you spend in PlanetSide 2 is in the midst of a massive firefight, however. There are uneventful stretches in which you and your squad capture facilities with little resistance, or amble ahead in tanks for many minutes on end, wishing there was something to shoot. Back at your faction's primary base, you might spend some time deciding how to spend the certification points you've earned during your hours and days of battle. This is your primary currency, and as is the case with so many free-to-play games, this currency accumulates slowly after the initial hours. When you feel vulnerable even when surrounded by the stolid armor of a lightning tank, it's only logical that you'd want to reinforce it. And when certs are slow to come, spending real-world money is a temptation.

When in doubt, head towards the sound of gunfire.
When in doubt, head towards the sound of gunfire.

I wouldn't call PlanetSide 2 "pay to win;" Too little rests on your individual performance for that moniker to be an apt one. Yet there are some conveniences that are difficult to resist, such as the ability to bypass login queues when you purchase a membership (that is, a paid subscription, which is $14.99 if you pay on a monthly basis). Given that queues are still frequent on some servers, that cost ends up feeling more like blackmail for an experience that should be a base-level expectation (playing as soon as you log in) rather than a premium perk.

Like so many big games with dozens of complex moving parts, your enjoyment of PlanetSide 2 on the PlayStation 4 rests on how forgiving you are of technical hiccups you would properly expect to be vanquished. As you play, the questions mount. "Why did that tank vanish into thin air after I fired my homing missile, and why did my missile then shoot into the sky?" "Why did my vehicle just sink through the geometry and explode?" "Does the view distance need to be this bad, even on a snowy continent?" You may never find answers--but you will temporarily forget you ever asked the questions when you and a squad of jump-pack-equipped light infantry swarm an enemy base, forcing the opposition onto the exterior platform where a friendly aircraft pilot guns them down with a laser cannon. At these moments, the troubles fade away, leaving only the frights and delights of planetary war.

The Good

  • Fantastic massive battles involving vehicles and infantry
  • It's quick and easy to hook up with others and get to the battlefront
  • Diversity of combat and terrain keeps battles fun and fresh

The Bad

  • Far too many technical hitches
  • Lack of world-building, learning curve, and other elements aren't newcomer-friendly

About the Author

Kevin played many dozens of hours of PlanetSide 2 on the PC, and spent dozens more with the PS4 version. He's not the best pilot, but he's killer with a rocket launcher. He's played different factions for review purposes, but his heart will always be with the Vanu.

I did enjoy my time on the PC version but I feel the large maps are somewhat boring. Sure, they are huge and create lots of dynamic battles. However, there are usually a few spots of fighting and if your lucky your teammates will have a modest understanding of what tactics are required to capture a point. I spent a lot of time just frantically running around looking for people to shoot instead of working with my team to actually get something done.

So...an unoptimized port of a mediocre shooter...hmmm. Don't get me wrong--I've experienced some massive battles on the PC version, and the feeling of being a grunt on the front lines, taking orders as they trickle down the chain of command is definitely impressive. However, the battles do little to hide the fact that the world you're fighting over is empty and lifeless when the smoke clears. The actual shooting mechanics feel like a slightly-improved version of early 2000-era shooters, or worse in some cases. The grind for better gear isn't tremendously important, but it can make a crucial difference when things get heated--and they often do.

That said, you could do worse than at least giving this unwieldy beast a shot. Hey, it's free--so what do you have to lose?

Leave it to Sony to make a three year old PC game worse for PS4.

@pnova: what if i don't have $1000 for all the fancy perks and gadgets? that's what turned me off about the pc version. After grinding for hours upon end, i still couldn't afford a damn thing i wanted.... which wasn't too much to begin with

@DomaineStickem: String some killstreaks together, heal people, repair things, blow up ground vehicles, shoot down space ships, rack up kill assists, guard areas and help out team mates in order to get quick and easy experience. I did just that and earned 1000 certification points, which I then spent on a suppressed MKV SMG.

@DomaineStickem: most weapons you can get just by playing the game like any other shooter like Battlefield or cod, you don't have to spend real cash, but if you see someone looking fly and different, he spend cash to look good.

It's a little rough around the edges, but getting better with every patch. I didn't find the learning curve to be that drastic, but a button mapping guide for each class could solve most of those issues from my experience. This dev is really good so far at trying to clean bugs/issues, and overall giving this game the long term support it needs to be worth your time. I'd recommend it to anyone that finds large scale online battles exciting. Sorry titanfall fans, but this is no 6vs6 botfest.

I play this on PC but wanted to read this review. I would encourage anyone playing this to keep at it, Daybreak is pretty good at addressing bugs and such.

Once you get some friends and get past the learning curve, you can do a lot in this game. Some edges will always be rough due to the scale, but to me its been worth it.

I have been playing this on PC for a couple of years now. It is absolutely fantastic if you have some form of patience. If you hate dying in a game and don't want to go out of your way avoiding doing so: don't play this game. If you don't care and you like a sense of teamwork and accomplishing actual goals with a gigantic army: please do play this. it is absolutely thrilling.

they have a "noob" island now called KOLTYR so that all the new players can get familiar with the game and the mechanics.

As for the launch, yeah it was pretty cruddy, but I hear that they are improving a lot now.

Instead of playing the safe card, like all the multimillionaire devs and publishers around (EA, Activision, DICE, Bungie, Ubisoft, etc), Daybreak had the courage to try something incredibly ambitious and unique. It may not be as polished as other 'AAA' shooters out there, but it offers a scale and sense of cooperation no other console game comes close. It does have many bugs, and the menus/map are incredibly slow, though.

It's an easy 8.5 to me, and a game i see myself playing for years to come.

This game, even with its current technical issues and confusing and overwhelming new player experience (fixes are on the way btw), deserves at least an 8/10. For the simple fact that it offers a massive epic scale (which makes you feel like being in a real war) and level of teamwork simply no other shooter can offer. It really brings something revolutionairy and unique to the table that can be insanely engaging, even on the PS4, and is not properly reflected in this review imo.

The fact that they manage to run this game (that frequently sees hundreds of players blasting away on your screen) on consoles is nothing short but a miracle.

Btw Gamespot gave the PC version a 9/10 a year ago.

I repeat... they really liked the PC version, as you stated and didn't like the PS4 version that plays worse a couple years later.

@RussellGorall: you're right, PC>>>PS4 version. I can't even comprehend how did they managed to port such a massive game to a living room console. This game relays so heavily on processing power (not GPU¡¡), that even top Intel desktop PC processors have problems running it. We AMD users are esentially in disadvantage, as devs themselves said.

And I'm salty too 'cause this low rating can turn away new players. This game is so good and ambitious in it's concept, it's so valuable, that a 7 rating is unfair. This game must be promoted and encouraged to play if you're a concerned gamer. My two cents

hmm, I tought of all reviewers Kevin could appreciate the unique, ambitious and revolutionary features this game has. Personally, I don't think this rating is fair, with all it's issues is a solid 8-9. This game is the real deal in FPS. It has pretty much spoiled any other FPS since i first played it, I can't go back and play COD and BF after this, as I can't go back and see Fast and the Furious after watching Fury Road. This game is unfair and sadly under appreciated.

If you're a casual gamer, you wont enjoy it because of its deep mechanics, and sky high learning curve (After 800+ hours and being in good outfits, I'm still learning lots of things about flanking, team playing, Infiltrating, Leadership, Light Assault ambushing and harassing, ESF piloting, etc.)

Ive only played it on PC, but have over 1,500+ hours logged so far. I havent spent a single penny so its an honest to truth FREE game.

I think Kevins assessment is pretty fair as far as there being an initial learning curve. You eventually figure things out within an hour or so for the most part, and the rest I would suggest looking up on youtube or a wiki page. I know that sounds bizarre but there are alot of moving parts within the game. Its essentially Battlefield conquest but on a much larger scale.

There are also a few technical issues as he mentioned, but honestly considering how large the game is I think theyve really smoothed most problems out since it first launched. The worst thing I get lately is occasional lag but its really not that prevalent. It is also worth mentioning that they update things fairly frequently to fix bugs and add an occasional weapon, vehicle or even continent from time to time. But mostly bug fixes.

I think if youre looking for a large scale FPS that depends more on massive platoon tactics rather than 1 on 1 youll find theres nothing else quite like Planetside 2 at the time. It forces you to play as a team and thats part of the fun imo. Seriously, it not any fun playing by yourself... join an oufit so you can play with an organized platoon.

Why are you talking about the PC version in a PS4 review a few years later?

Hmm. That's fair. personally i'd probably give it like an 8.5 with the glitches and everything. I actually enjoy playing Planetside 2 on my PS4 more than my PC, but it's interface is far from smooth. Hopefully they can fix that with a patch.

@RSM-HQ: 1) He didn't call you a casual gamer her said, "if you're a casual gamer you won't like it." 2) You were making an assumption (it's nothing like MAG in my opinion) about a game you've never played, so he was trying to give you some accurate info from his experiences.

On another note, although bioshocks controls are very clunky for an fps, it is one of my all time favourite games.
