Quantum Break Review

  • First Released Apr 5, 2016

Time is fleeting

Few games use live-action cutscenes as emphatically as Quantum Break. It's one of the game's defining elements. Between each of its five gameplay-based chapters, you have the opportunity to watch roughly 20-minute-long episodes, which are entirely optional but designed to offer insight into the antagonist's state of mind. The rest of the pitch is that--by making narrative decisions between chapters--you can influence the story, which involves time-travel, an evil corporation, and a bit of brotherly love.

There's no getting around it: blending a "TV show" and a game in one package is a risky move, and unfortunately, one that doesn't pay off here. Both aspects of Quantum Break offer things worth getting excited about: combat is often explosive and chaotic in just the right way, and the show does a decent job of establishing intrigue that fuels your investment in the story. But the disparate parts don't gel well together because your influence over some events creates expectations that fail to pan out in the bigger picture. Your choices can have an effect on facets of the show and game--characters interact in different ways, and some minor events play out differently--but by and large, this isn't your story to mold. Quantum Break isn't the sort of experience that warrants a second playthrough, even though it confidently insists that it is.

Now Playing: Quantum Break - Review

Sorry, Jack. No one ever said having super powers was going to be easy.
Sorry, Jack. No one ever said having super powers was going to be easy.

Jack Joyce, the time-bending lead character played by Shawn Ashmore (Fringe, X-Men), is one of a few characters played by well-known actors, and for the most part, each member's professional acting chops are put to good use. Lance Reddick (The Wire, John Wick) delivers a great performance as Martin Hatch, whose motivations are open to interpretation right up until the very end. There are a number of other, lesser-known actors who deliver great performances as well, which goes a long way to distract you from the show's shortcomings. From the goofy henchmen costumes with massive insignias to the repeated use of the same prop cars during a chase--from shot to shot--there are obvious flaws to contend with.

Of course, Quantum Break is intended to be played rather than merely watched, but even if you skip its optional episodes, the best aspects of its gameplay are suppressed by frequent bouts of mundanity. Combat is the unequivocal star of the show here. At the start of the game, you're imbued with the ability to manipulate time, which allows you to slow down combat, speed up Jack's movement, create shields that freeze bullets upon impact, or cast Time Blast bombs near unsuspecting enemies. It doesn't take long to develop a flow, to understand how to link one ability to the next by managing each move's cooldown timer. You can thrust yourself into danger to establish line of sight on an enemy and protect yourself with a shield while you open fire. When your defense runs out, you can quickly zip into cover and cast a Time Blast or resort to your firearms while your abilities refresh.

There's no one right way to fight, and there's great enjoyment in experimenting with your abilities, not to mention witnessing the environment react to your powers as the scene shifts, cracks, and glitches out around you. Quantum Break is a great-looking game with some truly impressive character models that bring its actors to life, and the time-based special effects are a constant source of amazement. There's also an incredible amount of real-time destruction on display, which not only looks great but also keeps you moving during combat as enemies regularly destroy your hiding spots.

Quantum Break's basic shooting mechanics, however, are less impressive. You frequently rely on a dynamic-cover system; walk up to an object and Jack will automatically duck behind it. While it's possible to blind fire your Time Blast ability from cover, you can't use your guns with the same amount of freedom; you don't have the option to shoot while crouched. Instead, you're forced to stand up and expose yourself to enemies, and usually, take damage. While it's true that gunplay isn't the star of the show in Quantum Break, it deserves better treatment than it's received. There are times when enemies deploy devices that disrupt your powers, leaving you no choice but to defend yourself the old fashioned way. If you're flanked while in cover during these moments, prepare to get hit from multiple angles when you reach for your gun.

While it's true that gunplay isn't the star of the show in Quantum Break, it deserves better treatment than it's received.

When you aren't engaged in combat, you're usually exploring environments that offer narrative clues like documents and emails. These offer a wealth of supplementary information, sometimes pertaining to characters who only get screen time during the show. As a resource, they're valuable, but they are so dense that pausing to read every one in order to understand semi-interesting side stories is a tiresome effort to undertake.

Strutting between action sequences can be a welcome break, but not when you're funneled into woefully ill-conceived platforming challenges. In these sections, you have to awkwardly scale objects and leap around while fighting Jack's sloppy movement every step of the way. Your path in these moments is so tightly controlled that Jack doesn't even attempt to climb objects that he's not "supposed" to; he clumsily stumbles against them instead. During some of these moments, you need to use your time powers to arrange the scene in a way that allows you to get from point A to point B. The catch: your alterations only last for a short period of time, forcing you to wrestle with floaty movement under pressure.

Sadly, Quantum Break's gameplay is essentially divided equally between combat and hapless environment traversal. Given that the entire campaign can be completed in less than 10 hours--live-action episodes included--the distribution of activities feels that much more disappointing. Even if you go back and change your decisions--such as preventing a character from dying--your path essentially remains the same, albeit with a few minor elements remixed to hint at your agency over its plot.

By the end, you know the most important parts of the story. Replaying it to witness slightly altered events in the middle would require you to retread well-worn, sometimes boring territory for little payoff. Getting to the end of Quantum Break can be an interesting ride at times, but no matter how impressive the combat is, or how great the game looks, there's no getting around the fact that it's driven by a story with limited appeal and hindered by disappointing design decisions.

The Good

  • Impressive visuals
  • Great environmental destructability
  • Effective performances from a great cast
  • Time powers enable great creativity during combat

The Bad

  • Sloppy movement and weapon controls
  • The element of choice isn't as powerful as it seems
  • Forced, unimaginative platforming sections

@nerveagent: Considering none of us have had as much time playing Quantum as the reviewer since the game just came out and you posted four hours ago, it's a little early to declare the review is a disgrace. The best we can offer is "first impressions" which are useless. You could be right that the review is a disgrace, but to be fair, it's just one persons opinion.

That said, Quantum is sitting at much lower 77/100 at Metacritic (much lower than the expected mid 80's-90s/100 metascore people have expected this game to garner). So, there are quite a few professional game reviewers that have had an issue with the game after their completions.

@SolidTy: How is a 78 on metacritic much lower than the 60 at Gamespot or 40 at Giant Bomb? 78 feels about right based on what I've played, and clearly demonstrates that these two scores are significant outliers. If Gamespot gave it a 70, I think we would all be fine with it, but 60 is ridiculous.

@grognard66: The 77/100 Quantum metascore is not much lower than the 6/10 GS score, I never compared those two in that fashion. The "much lower 77/100" part I was referring too was that Quantum was expected to be 80s-90s/100 metascoring and unfortunately, Remedy's latest retail effort didn't hit the metascoring benchmark, in fact Quantum is Remedy's lowest retail scoring AAA budgeted game to date.

That said, there are always outliers when compiling scores from Rotten Tomato to Metacritic to whatever. That's the nature of the game. GS is notorious for coming in lower than the metascore for a good number of years though.

As I mentioned, Dark Souls 3 is a 90/100 metascore, a coveted 90 metascoring...and here at GS it just got an 8/10. That's how GS has been for a great many years for a number of games. The fact that every time a new review doesn't reflect people's expectations is always surprising to me. How many years do GS have to show us a pattern before people stop complaining? Either way, I haven't been a fan of GS reviews for a long time, but their opinion is their opinion.

Also, you played Quantum, but you haven't beat the game and wrote a review so your opinion on part of a game doesn't stand up fairly to this GS review written after the author completed the Quantum. Your experiences right now are not comparable. Maybe you'll find yourself of the same opinion you have now when you beat Quantum, or maybe you'll think this game is a 6/10, or even lower. That's the other issue, people play a game part way through and then post their impressions and compare against a finished review. Again, that makes no sense. Clearly, you should complete the game and then compare the review, not compare from "what you've played".

Either way, I wanted to clear up what a "much lower 77/100 metascore" meant. It has nothing to do with GS, and everything to do with the metascore that was expected for this long awaited Remedy title.

@nerveagent: After playing the game all day, I have to say it feels very much like Uncharted in terms of movement and gun play. Funny how they were never complained about in UC.

@scblais: Well assuming your comparison after playing the game half of one day (unlike the reviewer who completed the game), Uncharted did come out in 2007, so perhaps that dated gameplay doesn't feel as fresh in 2016.

Perhaps you are right, but also it's possible you haven't yet felt the monotony (that others who completed the entire game speak about) since you only had one day with the game since it just released hours ago.

It's not like the Quantum is setting the world on fire though, Quantum is sitting at much lower (than expected) 77/100 at Metacritic.

@SolidTy: Well considering the gunplay and movement in the UC4 beta was the same as UC2 & 3, will it be considered to have sloppy gameplay too?

I began playing at midnight. I'm a good 6 to 7 hours in. The gameplay has become more fun the deeper I've gone with new powers and the amping of powers.

The game is averaging a 78, so the average is nearly 2 points higher. Many reviewers are putting it much higher. If you want to go down that road, of the 80 "professional" reviews, 61 are positive, 15 mixed and only 4 negative. It has far more scores over 80 than under.

Doesn't really mean anything to me personally. I'm enjoying the game a lot. And, like others, my personal opinion is that the review is terrible.

@scblais: You are talking about an Uncharted MP beta for multiplayer, not a released finished game (nor the SP gameplay), but what you mention could be an issue once the Uncharted game releases, we'll see. We have to wait for it to release, like we did for Quantum Break.

Again though, that's assuming your comparison to Uncharted is a proper reference point which is a big leap. It's like comparing Halo and Call of Duty. Quantum Break is Quantum Break, not Uncharted or Alan Wake. As a matter of fact, Remedy has yet to make a game in the 90+ metascoring level, but I do enjoy their offerings. This huge AAA game has hit a major low from Remedy in terms of critical backlash. I'm not a big Uncharted fan, but in the end a game has to be it's own thing. As I pointed out, the Metacritic score is 77/100 (Quantum Break 77/100 at Metacritic), so it's clear this game has some sort of issues. I'll still enjoy it, but I'm being objective as almost none of the posters here have completed the game and then wrote a review on the game. We are just getting the game now.

Regarding averages and GS scores, GS recently scored Dark Souls 3 an 8 and that game is a 90/100 at metacritic. Since I've been here for over a decade, more often than not, GS is harsher than the average.

Maybe your impression is the review is terrible, and it just might be, but maybe you'll feel differently upon completing Quantum Break. I'm just pointing out perspective is everything. There are a lot of people complaining about the review and they haven't completed the game. I'm all for calling out bad reviews, but ONLY after I feel I've completed the game and put my time in the MP if there is any MP. It's too early to call something a bad review when most, if not all of us, haven't completed it. Maybe we'll feel the game is more tiresome near the end of the game, something we wouldn't notice on a first impression on a brand new game.

TBH, I haven't enjoyed GS reviews in a great many years, but I'm all for giving a review a chance...I just like to look over the review after my time with a new game is done.

@off3nc3: Just because it gets a 6 doesn't mean its a sht game. You might personally like it. Even if the reviewers don't give it an impressive review.

ARMA is one of my favourite military shooters. I love it, because I can design my own missions and have an arsenal of tons of weapons and gear and vehicles to play around with in the editor and make my own call of duty style missions, but way more realistic. But reviews are never normally high for it. Probably for good reason. That doesn't affect my enjoyment of ARMA at all.

Any comments on cover system: After playing this game i have found that is feels just like The Last Of Us when you go behind cover. Not as amazing as "The Division" cover system but it is still great. The last of us was tough to get used to as well,

@golden1elite: it feels exactly like the Last Of Us cover system. It didn't need to be groundbreaking since you could freeze time or use the bullet dodge speed burst. Rainbow Six Vegas, Gears of War, and the Division all have great cover systems nonetheless.

At best after few patches to fix the restrictions in gameplay, am guessing this game deserves a 7. It looks fun, but if the game ends in less than 10 hours I'd say that's not enough to pay full price. Hopeful free DLCs come along

The mechanical shooting is very sloppy and the cover is ridiculously bad.

The game doesn't offer anything to be excited about and it's getting boring really quick.

I had a big expectations from this game but it is not more than a flop!

@xrizz1066: you can say the same for sony. play games in 1080p 60fps, and its clearly not the case, but now they will make you pay for the actualy console that will play 1080p 60fps and you will be the first to throw that money away to them. sony fans are the ones getting screwed

@fedor: Nice try on the non existent lol. You were calling others trash fanboys which really shows you have some anger issues towards others who disagree with you or have a console different than you. I am trading my PS4 for a second Xbox One because my PS4 is starting to sit and the controller is not as agronomic, the touch pad wore out as a novelty. Up till now I have enjoyed Bloodborne, Dying Light, TLOU, and many more PS4 games. I support all good games and dont hate on a certain system genre. To each his own LMAO

After playing QB all morning all I can say is what a joke this review is, it's clearly done for clicks. No way shape or form is this game a 6 or the X1 version of the Order, it deserves an 8 at least. It's actually a very good game with an engrossing story as you would expect from Remedy.

@sladey: All morning =/= completing the game though.

Plus, Quantum is sitting at much lower (than expected by fans) 77/100 at Metacritic which suggests those of us that only played the game for a few hours may not understand the context of the review until we actually complete the game.

Call me salty, but I'm still baffled at how this game got a 6. Every other gaming/tech site gave Quantum break a minimum of 7 point something out of 10 or about 4/5 depending on their rating scale. Dark Souls 3 should also be a 9 or 10, but this Gamespot where 90% of articles are clickbait to start comment wars.

Can't wait to pick up my pre-order this morning at Devil(Game)stop.

@SolidTy: Well despite paying £100 for the unit with a free year of live, kinect, 2 controllers I feel its a bargain.

However owning both inferior consoles and a sweet gaming rig. I would disagree and say that the Xboxone has the better operating system in comparison to the ps4. Which you would expect from microsoft.

I will enjoy, Thanks

@cyberpunk_2077: The Xbone OS is too laggy by comparison. It's prettier, but even pressing left on the dpad you have a slight lag pause issue. You'll notice over time, or not, but various websites including here at Gamespot.com have explained the many issues with the Xbone OS. I get it though, a new toy sometimes we overlook the flaws. I've had my Xbone since launch 2013.

I have three sweet gaming rigs and all the consoles since launch, but I'm glad you are enjoying your purchase.

6 out of 10, thats just above average. Which is what it seems to have been getting across the board. Such a shame I was so looking forward to this. Oh well wait to purchase 2nd hand when out on PC. Still no need for the fat ugly VCR!!

@i-spooky-i: Ahh Caps cuz your shouting, grow up child and go bore someone else.

Also when I said across the board. i was talking about mainstream media. Get you head out to the real world. here's 2 examples both from 2 very different papers!!

I hate using anything from Daily Mail, but I think it shows what I meant by across the board!!!

@xrizz1066: across the board it's been getting around 8, which is about right. It's turned out to be a really good game with a great story to boot. The TV show element is really engrossing

@sladey: Well it says 6 here and I've seen lower. So not sure what you mean by across the board!!!! I would say its managing over to be slightly above average say 6or7 out 10. Not quite what everyone was expecting.

I'm glad the TV series is engrossing as that's all the X1 is good for TV.

@xrizz1066: only Gamespot, and Giant Bomb and 2 others gave it a crap score. Out of 80 reviews only 4 have scored it low. If it wasn't for the 4 poor reviews it would be sitting on 80+ on Meta but currently is on 78 which is much higher than 6/10. How Giant Bomb gave it a 4 is beyond anyone

@sladey: Well from what I've read, it's been marked down for boring game play after a few hours, also the controls are a bit sloppy in places.

Still it's not the huge hit I and a whole lot more was expecting

The first act was great. Love the time control mechanics. You can be very creative with them. Love the dash, time bubble, and spray some bullets. The guys just flies away.
