Quantum Break Review

Time is fleeting

Few games use live-action cutscenes as emphatically as Quantum Break. It's one of the game's defining elements. Between each of its five gameplay-based chapters, you have the opportunity to watch roughly 20-minute-long episodes, which are entirely optional but designed to offer insight into the antagonist's state of mind. The rest of the pitch is that--by making narrative decisions between chapters--you can influence the story, which involves time-travel, an evil corporation, and a bit of brotherly love.

There's no getting around it: blending a "TV show" and a game in one package is a risky move, and unfortunately, one that doesn't pay off here. Both aspects of Quantum Break offer things worth getting excited about: combat is often explosive and chaotic in just the right way, and the show does a decent job of establishing intrigue that fuels your investment in the story. But the disparate parts don't gel well together because your influence over some events creates expectations that fail to pan out in the bigger picture. Your choices can have an effect on facets of the show and game--characters interact in different ways, and some minor events play out differently--but by and large, this isn't your story to mold. Quantum Break isn't the sort of experience that warrants a second playthrough, even though it confidently insists that it is.

Now Playing: Quantum Break - Review

Sorry, Jack. No one ever said having super powers was going to be easy.
Sorry, Jack. No one ever said having super powers was going to be easy.

Jack Joyce, the time-bending lead character played by Shawn Ashmore (Fringe, X-Men), is one of a few characters played by well-known actors, and for the most part, each member's professional acting chops are put to good use. Lance Reddick (The Wire, John Wick) delivers a great performance as Martin Hatch, whose motivations are open to interpretation right up until the very end. There are a number of other, lesser-known actors who deliver great performances as well, which goes a long way to distract you from the show's shortcomings. From the goofy henchmen costumes with massive insignias to the repeated use of the same prop cars during a chase--from shot to shot--there are obvious flaws to contend with.

Of course, Quantum Break is intended to be played rather than merely watched, but even if you skip its optional episodes, the best aspects of its gameplay are suppressed by frequent bouts of mundanity. Combat is the unequivocal star of the show here. At the start of the game, you're imbued with the ability to manipulate time, which allows you to slow down combat, speed up Jack's movement, create shields that freeze bullets upon impact, or cast Time Blast bombs near unsuspecting enemies. It doesn't take long to develop a flow, to understand how to link one ability to the next by managing each move's cooldown timer. You can thrust yourself into danger to establish line of sight on an enemy and protect yourself with a shield while you open fire. When your defense runs out, you can quickly zip into cover and cast a Time Blast or resort to your firearms while your abilities refresh.

There's no one right way to fight, and there's great enjoyment in experimenting with your abilities, not to mention witnessing the environment react to your powers as the scene shifts, cracks, and glitches out around you. Quantum Break is a great-looking game with some truly impressive character models that bring its actors to life, and the time-based special effects are a constant source of amazement. There's also an incredible amount of real-time destruction on display, which not only looks great but also keeps you moving during combat as enemies regularly destroy your hiding spots.

Quantum Break's basic shooting mechanics, however, are less impressive. You frequently rely on a dynamic-cover system; walk up to an object and Jack will automatically duck behind it. While it's possible to blind fire your Time Blast ability from cover, you can't use your guns with the same amount of freedom; you don't have the option to shoot while crouched. Instead, you're forced to stand up and expose yourself to enemies, and usually, take damage. While it's true that gunplay isn't the star of the show in Quantum Break, it deserves better treatment than it's received. There are times when enemies deploy devices that disrupt your powers, leaving you no choice but to defend yourself the old fashioned way. If you're flanked while in cover during these moments, prepare to get hit from multiple angles when you reach for your gun.

While it's true that gunplay isn't the star of the show in Quantum Break, it deserves better treatment than it's received.

When you aren't engaged in combat, you're usually exploring environments that offer narrative clues like documents and emails. These offer a wealth of supplementary information, sometimes pertaining to characters who only get screen time during the show. As a resource, they're valuable, but they are so dense that pausing to read every one in order to understand semi-interesting side stories is a tiresome effort to undertake.

Strutting between action sequences can be a welcome break, but not when you're funneled into woefully ill-conceived platforming challenges. In these sections, you have to awkwardly scale objects and leap around while fighting Jack's sloppy movement every step of the way. Your path in these moments is so tightly controlled that Jack doesn't even attempt to climb objects that he's not "supposed" to; he clumsily stumbles against them instead. During some of these moments, you need to use your time powers to arrange the scene in a way that allows you to get from point A to point B. The catch: your alterations only last for a short period of time, forcing you to wrestle with floaty movement under pressure.

Sadly, Quantum Break's gameplay is essentially divided equally between combat and hapless environment traversal. Given that the entire campaign can be completed in less than 10 hours--live-action episodes included--the distribution of activities feels that much more disappointing. Even if you go back and change your decisions--such as preventing a character from dying--your path essentially remains the same, albeit with a few minor elements remixed to hint at your agency over its plot.

By the end, you know the most important parts of the story. Replaying it to witness slightly altered events in the middle would require you to retread well-worn, sometimes boring territory for little payoff. Getting to the end of Quantum Break can be an interesting ride at times, but no matter how impressive the combat is, or how great the game looks, there's no getting around the fact that it's driven by a story with limited appeal and hindered by disappointing design decisions.

The Good

  • Impressive visuals
  • Great environmental destructability
  • Effective performances from a great cast
  • Time powers enable great creativity during combat

The Bad

  • Sloppy movement and weapon controls
  • The element of choice isn't as powerful as it seems
  • Forced, unimaginative platforming sections

This game is easily worth a 9 period..

It has been one of the most revolutionary and best looking games that i have played up till now.

@dhinge007: This game is one of the most interesting new IPs this gen, but it lacks follow through. Looks great..... but I wish it would use those high end graphics to push the story along or even expand it or better yet make combat scenarios more interesting.

I wish this game was like Deus Ex or Red Dead Redemption, Bioshock, in that it would take bigger chances. Even if the first game doesn't sale well- its sequels would build a bigger fan base. And this game is not revolutionary at all, it has taken many safe ideas, put them together and then allowed accounting to edit anything risky out.

Just finished the game. Immediately jumped back in with some skill under my belt and not having to read all the emails and it was much more fun (took me maybe four hours to finish it the second time). A 6 is terribly unfair. I would give it a 9 myself. Incredibly well crafted. And once you get the combat down it's great fun. Lastly, this has got to be the BEST story I've seen in a video game. Most time travel stories have tons of plot holes. This only had one but if you give that a pass, the story was just brilliant. Glad I listened to other reviews and picked this one up.

6 is accurate. For a game with gunfights and time powers, it's really meh. It seems hard to make something like this boring, but they pulled it off. The show is meh, too. Gunfights have no real weight to them. The powers are ok, but there wasn't anything that made me think, "Holy shit. That was cool!" Everything was more like, "Huh. That was kind of neat." I was gonna play through again to make different choices, but the only different choice I've made is not to play through a second time, because it's just not very interesting.

@droweprice: Steam doesn't give an overall score. Maybe the latest review when you looked happened to be a 9? Metacritic, which gives an average score taken from all professional reviews score it 66/100 on PC.

I bought it a few days ago for PC (steam version) and tbh it's the only game I've ever bought that I truly regret. It runs terribly. I've got a i7 6700k and GTX 1070 plus 16GB of 3200mhz ram, and this game runs like sh*t. If i turn frame scaling off and put all settings on medium @ 1080p it stutters and hitches all over the place and it doesn't even look good. The only way I can get it to run well is by turning frame scaling back on (which renders the game at a measly 720p then upscales to 1080p, same as xbox version). Using this I can also put all settings up to ultra, but the game still looks terrible. Loads of jagged edges, loads of very large pixels on screen, seriously sometimes, when there's lots of effects on screen it looks like it's rendering at 480p!!!! It's a terrible blurry pixelated mess. I played the first 60 mins- twice! then uninstalled. Shame as I loved Alan Wake. I made the mistake of buying it cheap from cdkeys site so I can't get a refund. Gameplay is nothing special but the gfx totally spoil it for me. The frame scaling confuses my tv too and it wont allow me to use game mode which means there's added input lag.

@analgrin: You should have bought an Xbox One :b JK are really like this game and I feel that it's a reason to own an xbox for people who love adventure games. The gunplay is elevated by time control powers and is much smoother than what people have been saying. Also, it's one of the best time travel scenarios written, ever. Maybe it's been patched a lot since release. In any case, I regret arriving so late the party, and hope the game sells enough to warrant a sequel, spiritual or otherwise.

@consolehaven: Well if I leave frame scaling on (which is also used on the xbox version) it runs at a constant 60fps with all settings maxed out but it looks too low resolution, especially on my 4k screen. And apparently it still looks better than xbox version but it's just too low resolution for my eyes. Xbox version looks even worse and only runs at 30fps. Maybe i'll try it again on my smaller 1080p monitor, might look better on a small screen.

You missed out. Great game. I have a 1080 and I'm certain that even with a 1080 ti you can't run at 1080p 60 fps with mostly ultra settings and frame scaling off. Still, on a 1080p screen it looks fine.

@OtherFabbros: I mean the game isn't all that bad. I agree with the reviewer about the game's shooting mechanics not being very impressive. It has some areas that it can improve on, but it has some good things about it. The graphics, and storyline are pretty good. I played it when it came out on Xbox One. But I'm waiting for the Quantum Break Steam release: http://pcgamingexpertise.66ghz.com/quantum-break-steam-trailer/. The graphics on the PC are going to be 10 times better.

Please do not listen to this bad review. Peter brown has admitted to being more of a Sony fan boy making this review biased. Not to mention that Gamespot and Giant bomb which both gave this game really low scores are owned by CBS interactive who has a paid contract deal with Sony(look it up). The game deserves an 8, I personally would give it a nine because I love the Story and amazing slow mo gun battles with time manipulation. AWESOME!

Guys listen I understand that the xbox one and ps4 aren't the most computationally powerful machine's as far as gaming power is concerned but with that being said these console's are far from being absolute shit as games such as quantam break prove beyond any doubt that the Xbox One is more than capable of providing an excellent cinematic gaming experience with excellent graphics and superb quality gameplay, image quality, and most importantly smooth solid framerate where the game looks as good if not better than any game you can play even on a super ultra high end gaming computer as QUANTAM BREAK is absolutely the most visually stunning video game ive ever played regardless of whether it was gonna console and or an ultra high end gaming Pc as there ain't no denying that Quantam Break is the real deal and I've been playing an hour or so each day since launch basically just enjoying the game a little bit at a a time and as of right now I'm currently in Act 4 where I'm in the process of entering the time machine that is located in the swimming pool area of the game and the more I play the better the graphics seem to get as it seems that each level seems to progress graphically as you move through the game and I'm thoroughly enjoying Quantam Break as it's overall one of the best video game experiences I've ever had and that's saying a LOT as I'm nearly 34 years old and have been playing video games since age 2 and I've owned nearly every single note worthy video game console ever created and I've also custom built my own ultra high end gaming computer's over the years and so I've definitely enjoyed some very awesome graphical power where I've played the most demanding most graphically intense video games ever made and I've played them all at the highest possible settings, resolution, and maximum assets such as full anti aliasing and I've gotta tell you that NO DOUBT CRISIS 3 is the best looking video game ever made bar none period it's that simple nothing past nor present can touch that game and the truth is setting aside crisis 3 I'm not sure that there is any other game ive played that's as awesome as Quantam Break for the XBOX ONE as remedy has truly raised the bar when it comes to getting the most out of this console as I was seriously doubting the capabilities of the Xbox one considering the specifications are at best equivalent to an entry level gaming pc but with that being said the Xbox One is able to run a game such as Quantam Break which is one of the top 5 best looking games OF all time where as an entry level Pc and or even an upper mid range Pc would absolutely not be able to run this game anywhere near as good as the Xbox One because put simply a console vs Pc isn't an apples to apples comparison as the Console is going to be able to considerably outperform the Pc with equivalent hardware and in most cases when comparing a console to a Pc the truth is that you will need a Pc with hardware that's roughly 2 to 3 times as powerful as the consoles hardware in order to achieve the same level of performance because a console is a closed loop system with such a lower level of access to its hardware than the Pc equivalent but yea anyways back for QUANTAM BREAK ON XBOX ONE THIS GAME IS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC AS ITS EASILY WORTHY OF A 9.0 out of 10 all the way up to as much as a 9.5 out of 10 and that's not purely based on graphics alone as the game is so much more than awesome graphics as the story and the interwoven live action series television show which we watch as we progres through the game is absolutely amazing as it gives gamers something new and exciting and it makes the experience such an engaging and thoroughly enjoyable time spent as gaming doesn't get much better than Quantam Break and all the negative review's on the internet are absolutely ridiculous because this game is awesome it's one of the best single player games I've ever played as far as the campaign is concerned with a shooter game and the Xbox One for all its downfalls regarding the terrible low level hardware specs the truth is that this game Quantam Break makes those who play it such as myself really take a step back and pause for a moment asking myself wow maybe those 8 core jaguar cpu's and 7750 integrated gpu and 8 gb of ddr3 memory which makes up the Xbox One's apu isn't honestly as weak as everyone seems to believe because our eyes don't lie to us and when we play Quantam Break it's definitely an experience which is graphically superior to damn near every single Pc game on the market today as it's that damn good so I've retracted my previous opinions with regards to the Xbox One's power department because while the Apu is obviously pretty weak on paper as far as the specs the truth is when it comes to real world performance REMEDY's QUANTUM BREAK proves all of us wrong with regards to the Xbox One as the Console seems ridiculously weak in paper but games such as this one seem to suggest that perhaps this little Xbox One is far more capable than initially believed by all of us and when the right developer is creating a game where they spend quality time with the machine then Quantam Break is indicative of the true possibilities of the Xbox One

@xyesiamyourgodx: You doing ok, man? This post reads a little off balance... Anyway, Yes I agree that QB is a great looking game. The trick that enables Consoles to keep up with PC's is that the software is highly optimized for the consoles architecture. When a Developer knows exactly what hardware is in a system, they no longer have to worry about writing code that has to be compatible with a multitude of different system configurations. This is also the reason why Quantum Break has some performance / quality issues running on PC's... all that work was put into optimizing the game for the Xbox1 hardware specifically and not the PC. QB graphically doesn't look nearly as good as it could on PC, which is unfortunate, because the game really does have great art direction. QB is a really cool fun game, but I do think it has some rough spots as well. But I definitely applaud Remedy for what they've done, it's a really cool experiment, and its something different in the AAA space which we so rarely see. I enjoyed the plot, and the show quite a bit, I'm not so certain I enjoyed the gameplay all that much- it was telling for me that I actually was disappointed each time the show ended and I actually had to play.

I think if you want to point to a game that truely showcases the graphical achievements on console, you should look at Rise of the Tomb Raider. I think that is one of the best looking games on console to date, and it's truly a marvel they got that optimized so splendidly for the Xbox. And it looks even better on PC, which is saying a lot.

IGN def rates games more spot on in my opinion. Gamespot has become a PlayStation troll board, and sometimes I believe the Gamespot ratings are a bit biased. I gave this one an 8/10 before referring to IGN or Gamespot for their opinion just because the game looked so interesting to me. Sure enough, IGN with the 8, and Gamespot with the 6. I

He meant that Ign seems less biased than gamespot, so yes Rachet and clank is a better game then quantum break, In those reviewers eyes. I sold my PS4 last month to get a second xbox one for traveling, but when a good Sony game comes out I am free to acknowledge that.

Proof that trusting a score/rating on Gamespot is plain ridiculous. Play it before you bash it. This game has a compelling and entertaining story, and it's one of the better games that I've played in awhile. My only complaint is that the controls could be a bit better. Other than that, a great game and I'm anxious for a sequel. I really enjoy it. A solid 8/10 all day.

@hahamanin: I have seen other new IPs, and I believe that most of them are more sophisticated than this. Also, please don't shift the goal-post; you called this title better than other new IPs, and then compared it to remasters afterwards.

@Gelugon_baat: I'm genuinely curious what other new IP's you are talking about. I'm sure they exist, but I just can't really think of any other new IP's on this level of AAA game space... Until Dawn was a cool IP, but which I thoroughly enjoyed- but I think QB is a bit more substantial...

@Mirimon78: Notice many ignored your post. QB is an easy 8/10 on Xbox and a patch has already corrected glitches on Windows 10 PC. So yeah.

@Mirimon78: UWP is so awful now. Good idea, poor execution.
