Resident Evil 2 Review - RE-vived Nightmares

Re-enter the survival horror.

Reliving familiar frights can often make for a less-than-exciting horror experience. But with the remake of Resident Evil 2, Capcom shows respect for the original while also going to great lengths to give the macabre atmosphere and tense gameplay a noticeable upgrade. In doing so, this revamp of the classic survival horror game shows that the series can still offer a terrifying experience like no other.

You once again play as either Leon Kennedy or Claire Redfield. A viral outbreak has unleashed hordes of zombies and other grotesque monsters upon Raccoon City, leading to a series of dangerous and nightmare-inducing encounters for the two characters. While both protagonists' storylines have similar plots and take place in the same locations, there are different supporting characters and unique challenges in each that set the two playthroughs apart.

Now Playing: Resident Evil 2 Video Review

In traditional Resident Evil fashion, you're tasked with surviving through the night and overcoming the nightmarish creatures and devious puzzles found throughout the infested streets of the city, the tight, dimly lit halls of the Police Station, and in the subterranean passages below. RE2 is a great mix of the understated survivalist approach from the original games and the tactile, reflex-oriented gameplay from more recent entries. It's very much a game about escalation; as your resources dwindle and the monsters become fearsome and more elaborate, the pressure is always mounting as the story progresses, and each moment feels just a bit more desperate than the last. Even the smallest of victories can feel like major wins in RE2, and you'll often find yourself onto the next struggle before you know it.

No Caption Provided

While those who played the original game will enter with an idea of what's to come, the remake does a lot to refresh certain encounters and locations. Though many locales and their layouts are similar--save for the addition of a brand-new area and a new monster to deal with--the events therein are new. Jump scares don't trigger when you expect them to, or a room that once spelled certain doom in your head is now a safe haven--but then the question arises: if this room is safe, which room is the real dangerous one?

Early Resident Evil games have a reputation for being melodramatic, often unintentionally, but the RE2 remake a more serious tone that makes for a more evocative story. While there is still the undercurrent of the hokey tone from the classics, with the characters cutting the tension with humor when appropriate, the remake's narrative is far more convincing, propped up by some impressive writing and strong performances that help convey urgency and despair. This is especially evident during the more quiet moments, when the protagonists will try to psych themselves up for what's to come. Even minor characters are given additional substance in the remake, with poignant moments given to the doomed police lieutenant Marvin Branagh and gun shop owner Robert Kendo.

Both Claire and Leon have two different versions of the campaign, and after finishing the first run for one, you'll be prompted to start a follow-up with the other. Called Second Scenarios, they allow you to see the larger story from a different perspective. Both scenarios are totally isolated from another, and choices therein won't impact the other, but what makes these second runs worthwhile are the different encounters and sub-plots that don't occur in the first. It's a very interesting way to experience the narrative, and with four versions of the campaigns between the two leads--with the first two averaging 12-15 hours--you constantly uncover new details and events that weren't present in the previous playthroughs.

Resident Evil 2's more serious tone is further enhanced by the renewed, fantastically atmospheric presentation, which gives familiar details from the classic game more of a pronounced look and feel. Moving away from the static camera angles of the original, everything has been redesigned with over-the-shoulder gameplay in mind, giving more of a palpable and invasive sense of dread when exploring. This is heightened even more by the impeccable audio and visual design of the game, creating an eerie, isolating vibe throughout. In a number of cases, you'll only have the illumination of your flashlight as you walk the dark hallways of the bloody and ruined police station, with the ambient rain and distant monster sounds ramping up the tension. You rarely feel safe in RE2, even when you actually are.

The remake's impressive level of detail is consistently noticeable, but especially so during gorey moments. These gruesome encounters channel the same macabre and staccato approach from the classics, but are now honed through the visual luster of modern rendering and animation. As the zombies are the one constant threat throughout, you quickly become accustomed to seeing flesh chip away as you fire off pistol shots, along with watching the undead torn in half by well-placed shotgun blasts. Though RE2 easily proves to be the goriest game of the series, it never comes off as excessive, and the grizzly details all serve to highlight the grim circumstances of the desperate situation.

Resident Evil 2's more serious tone is further enhanced by the renewed, fantastically atmospheric presentation...

At the beginning, your meager selection of weapons doesn't seem like a match for the game's most intimidating horrors, but there are means available that can give you the upper hand in a lopsided fight. In addition to dismembering enemies with well-aimed shots hindering zombies' speed and offense, you can barricade certain windows to block ravenous undead from entering from outside. While many of these options are simply a temporary solution to a long-term problem, which can make it seem like they're not all that worth taking advantage of, they are helpful in a pinch.

While you will no doubt settle into tactics that work well, RE2 throws in some fresh challenges. In one of the game's more tense encounters, you cross paths with the Tyrant, a hulking presence whose footsteps echo throughout the environment. Though it was a serious foe shown in small doses in the original, this imposing force of nature is now more of a persistent threat that actively stalks you during key periods in the story. Simply ducking into another room isn't enough, as it'll quickly follow you in to keep the chase going--similar to the RE3's Nemesis in that regard. If you manage to create enough distance and it loses line of sight, it'll disengage, but will remain lurking throughout the halls. With this dynamic, the Tyrant also makes the common foes you've gotten a handle of become genuine threats once again. As you find yourself trying to stay focused on the stalking figure, it's all too easy to round a corner and run into a group of zombies.

No Caption Provided

Though the Tyrant offers a nerve-wracking surprise during some of these key moments, which makes the feeling of getting the best of it all the more satisfying, there are other times when it can disrupt Resident Evil 2's pacing. This is especially frustrating when you're simply trying to acquire an item or solve a puzzle in a room that the Tyrant and zombies frequent. What should be tense encounters can sometimes become annoying exercises in trying to lure it away, and in some cases it comes off like you're taking advantage of the Tyrant's rather limited AI to do just that. The Tyrant can overstay its welcome, but in most cases, its presence is a constant reminder of the looming threat throughout the game.

While RE2 often keeps things serious, it's not all doom and gloom. In addition to occasional references that break the tension, there's also a suite of unlockable content available to the delight of RE fans, including the classic RE2 outfits for both Leon and Claire. After completing the campaign for both characters, you'll unlock a set of bonus modes starring fan-favorites Hunk and Tofu, the later of which is a sentient knife-wielding block of coagulated soy. Both of these extra modes take you on timed gauntlets battling through many intense encounters, with Tofu's mode being the most difficult scenario in the entire game. They also allow for a chance to cut loose against hordes of monsters without the worry of the larger survival-horror mechanics during the main game.

Resident Evil 2 is not only a stellar remake of the original, but it's also simply a strong horror game that delivers anxiety-inducing and grotesque situations, topping some of the series' finest entries. But above all, the remake is an impressive game for the fact that it goes all-in on the pure survival horror experience, confidently embracing its horrifying tone and rarely letting up until the story's conclusion. Though Resident Evil 2 has its roots firmly in the past, it reworks the familiar horrors into something that feels brand new and all its own.

I played as Claire first and loved it. I was debating whether to play through as Leon. It couldn't be that much different? but man I loved it all over again. Might even do Chris first and start again. GOTY for me.

avoided all the spoilers and it was worth it. what an amazing week i just had playing this beautiful game, and i'm still not fed up (though i do have to work again sadly). they nailed the mix of oldschool and modern resi. i could probably make a really long list of all the things i like, but i won't, because it's too much work and boring to read. but let me say this: the grenade launcher has a strap! A STRAP! we've come such a long way, humanity. keep it up!

He mentions when the tyrant shows up but its just part of the game so why complain? Adapt, get better and he becomes a minor nuisance.

Something that wasnt mentioned anywhere in any review is how empty and rushed the streets parts feel. I LOVE this game but when youre outside you dont feel like youre part of an outbreak at all, looking outside of the playable areas theres nothing, just a bunch of crammed cars, barely any fire, no walking zombies or distant screams or wtv, they truly missed out on this one to create an even more interesting outbreak. I know RE3 is the one that focuses more on the city streets but still...for a remake Id think they would put all their efforts into creating something memorable. The game IS absolutely amazing but could be even more.

@gameroutlawzz: in the beginning after Leon and Claire get separated? you got all that stuff (fire, screams, zombies). later on it's calmed down though, and when i was playing it i was hoping the way to the orphanage would be longer and more interesting.

@boobytrap: Yeah I just went through that part yesterday in my Claire B run but still, if you go through that part again look again outside of the playable area its all dark and empty with no real details added to the backgrounds/out-of-bound areas that you cant reach when the atmosphere shouldve been much more in the vein of an outbreak. SOrry english is not my main language but I hope you get what I mean.

@gameroutlawzz: I disagree! That only adds up more tension and suspense. The variety is the key in this game. They already showed you the hordes of zombies on the way to the police station (in both scenarios A and B). Why would they want to keep the exact same formula throughout the game? I like the way it is!

I love the new shooting mechanics. How the games sets that the Zombies that are inside, are the ones that you will face, unless, you don't close the windows !

Superb mechanic ! Instead of mindless hordes, this is quite new and refreshing as we *never know if they are already dead*, unless the head pops up !

Or does it end there ?!

RE1 was one of the first games i finished from start to end, RE2 was even better ! This Remake, is pure magic.

What a Game !

Zombies are very bullet spongy (yes, we're talking 6-8 head shots sometimes, but you can get lucky and they can die in as little as 1, but that's very rare) and the controls are good but not great. The like to ammo starve you in a couple parts of the Leon campaign, which is annoying because they never tell you if you should just run from certain fights or if you actually have to fight, so you'll have to reload your save if you wasted all your ammo on an enemy that doesn't die. The game gets easier as you go and the game is about 10 hours per campaign.

@csward: well they are trying to make it more survial-horror again. that you should be careful with your ammo is a given in a resident evil game, no? and zombies take as many bullets as they always did. sometimes you need 10 bullets for 1 zombie (but that's pretty much the max), sometimes you kill 2 zombies with 2 crits. as soon as a zombie hits the ground use the knife to finish him (and cut his legs off!), saves ammo.

lastly, this is supposed to be a hard game where you figure out stuff for yourself (like which enemies to fight and which to run from). if you enjoy more handholding this is probably not the right series (although the absolutely terrible tips during the loading screens that tell you puzzle solutions after you failed only once make it seem that way sometimes).

@RaveNRolla: Thanks for the tip on the knife - it seems for me using the knife was a lot easier in RE4. I have been using the knife in RE2 to quietly destroy Mr. Raccoon and the off chance I get grabbed by a zombie I hit L1 when prompted. I completed both Leon and Claire's initial campaigns strictly firing head shots like in RE4. I was disappointed to discover Leon and Claire's story campaigns aren't interwoven as one after all as they are two separate stories with similar levels. Another tip when you enter an area with zombies lying about motionless take the time to blow their heads off first before you trigger their wake up.

@csward: the thing is the engine rewards shooting their legs first. Especially, their feet or calves, that way they die faster. The game wants you to immobilize them first, I guess. Of course, you can still make their heads explode with just one shot, but it has to be very precise and close.

This game is great. This game is flipping hard. As a veteran of the OG PSX Resident Evils, I can unequivocally say this version is much harder (at least on hard). It's absolutely great. I don't scare easily but this game nails fear.

9 hours in.

Mr X is adding a ton of scare to the game but it is a bit exaggerating now. In the original RE2 he appeared during Claire's playthrough but more limited. Here, he is on your ass constantly. Even if you stay too long in a saferoom, he'll be right outside. He is also attracted to noise and with so many more zombies in the Remake, hard to not fight them so weapon use attracts him too. The lickers are also so hard to kill (if you play Leon on normal) and many more of them around (about twice as much than in the original). Like 10 shotgun headshots on normal playthrough and the ammo is definitely more limited than in the original one. Great game, but too much Mr X. This is like RE3 original and RE2 original making a baby. I am more a fan of fixed camera angles but with the implemention of Mr X being on your ass all the time and many more zombies and lickers, fixed camera angles would be useless. The game is more scary than the original but mainly due to stress factor of Mr X.

@phili878: That's massively exaggerated. I'm playing on hardcore and it's probably 3-5 shots on a licker with a shotgun. not ten.

@phili878: 10 headshots with the shotgun? I'm currently doing Leon's run on normal and I'm taking out Lickers with 3 shots and a few pistol rounds. Yes they are annoying but they should be right? As for Mr X, he really annoyed me at first, it got very frustrating very fast having him constantly around but, without heavy spoilers, these pursuits are not constant and he does back off for a while at certain points in the game. I just wish we could've used him to maybe take out a few Zombies that may be in his way, oh well. I'm still having crazy amounts of fun and it's great to see Vaocom do the original such justice.

@cherub1000: You play it on Assisted then (check if you did not accidentally downgrade difficulty like I did). I know it because I played it on standard and it took ages to down them with shotgun shots to head and I accidentally downgraded the difficulty (it asked me after a death and I hit enter too fast), and once I got downgraded to assisted, it took 3 head shots with shotgun.

@cherub1000: I've not yet tried attacking one with the Shotgun, even though it was very effective in the original game. However, I would assume throwing a grenade at one and quickly spamming the Shotgun would kill it with the player being unscathed. That said, I only killed four Lickers during my first playthrough, all Magnum kills.

I've found X more frustrating than difficult, especially on account of the fact the RE Engine doesn't feature realistic sound propagation. It's also a shame the game features invincibility frames, because their absence could have otherwise allowed players to negotiate strategic submission to mobs, in order to encourage the Tyrant to dispose of them while canceling their animation.

They should also have had some kind of organically implemented environmental component to combat engagement. Not unlike the Wall Mounted Explosives and Red Barrels found in Nemesis, wherein foregoing their immediate destruction would eventually prove convenient for resource management.

I wouldn't characterize this effort as doing justice to the original, on account of the fact that it does not. However, I wholeheartedly believe this one to be the more enjoyable experience, and the best game to have been developed by CAPCOM since Resident Evil 4 (2005). This is also the first contemporary AAA game that I would, despite its fundamental flaws, recognize as Survival Horror.

@phili878: I wouldn't attempt to take on a Licker without the Magnum, Phili. Usually, I would just sneak a head shot if complete avoidance was an impossibility, but the game insisted on making one behave inconsistently once, and fucked up my entire mental model. (playing on Hardcore)

As for MrX, it sadly features the same implementation Jack Baker has in Seven. Immortal mob, finite resources, emergent engagement goes disregarded. Also, fixed cameras wouldn't work on account of the fact that this game wasn't designed with those in mind.

That said, even if severely compromised by mechanical inconsistency derived from cinematic ambition, like its predecessor, this is definitely better than Resident Evil VII. However, I still think it is mediocre at best, and its lauded critical acclaim I construe to be undeserved.

@asnakeneverdies: Yes, I agree with you. The game per-se is great indeed, but I prefer the original (I play it once a year on my P2, voodoo3 win98 machine). Mr X is just way too much around. I disliked RE3 because it was 80% running away from the tyrant, I tolerated Mr X on the original RE2 but this here is just too much. I play it on normal first in hopes to then play it on hardcore but with so much MrX I know for a fact I will need a long break before going for Hardcore. Good luck with your playthrough!

Great game, let's be honest here if this game vastly outsells Resident Evil 7 then Resident Evil 8 could make the switch to the third person perspective again.

Only played the intro so far, but one really cool detail I noticed is that the place where the truck crashes at the beginning of Leon's story was in Resident Evil Outbreak (1st scenario). I can already tell these guys put a ton of attention to detail in this game and I'm psyched to continue playing.
