StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm Review

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm's fantastically diverse campaign and entertaining online play make up for its lackluster writing.

'

It has been almost two years since Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty was released. Since then, fans of the Zerg have been waiting for the Heart of the Swarm expansion to tell that race's side of the story. The time has finally come for the Zerg to get their moment to shine--and shine they do. It's unfortunate that poor writing intrudes on the campaign, because the missions themselves are highly entertaining and varied, and online play provides plenty of cutthroat thrills.

Now Playing: Video Review - Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm

Heart of the Swarm's single-player campaign serves as a great point of entry, boasting 20 missions with diverse objectives. Though they may not be as memorable as some of Wings of Liberty's finest missions (like the train robbery mission or the final stand of the Protoss), that doesn't change the fact that they are wonderful in their own right. One has you infiltrating a Protoss ship with a parasitic larva. After consuming its doomed host, the creature must slink around the ship, hiding from enemy units and collecting biomass until it evolves into a broodmother capable of spawning various Zerg creatures and destroying the vessel's engines and escape pods.

Another great level involves spreading creep (the living purple goo that oozes from Zerg structures) to wake up dormant scourge nests that can shoot down otherwise invincible Dominion ships. Elsewhere, you alternate between controlling Kerrigan's forces and commanding primal Zerg who must destroy the generators that power a psi destroyer device that makes Kerrigan's units explode. Other highlights include commanding Jim Raynor's battlecruiser, The Hyperion, during a space battle; having Kerrigan face off against a series of rivals in boss battles reminiscent of Diablo or World of WarCraft; and triumphing over a battle arena-style mission where AI-controlled infested Terrans act as cannon fodder while Kerrigan marches on a Dominion base. All this diversity keeps the campaign feeling constantly fresh.

One major difference between HOTS and WOL is the new campaign's focus on Kerrigan. Kerrigan gains levels by accomplishing mission objectives, making her hero unit even more powerful, and unlocking a tier of three abilities every 10 levels. You can switch out abilities between levels, and they range from special abilities that make Kerrigan more powerful (like shooting chain lightning with every attack or damaging multiple enemies) to powers that improve the swarm as a whole (like spawning two drones for the price of one). Generally, these are useful enough that all are tempting. However, there is one passive power that resurrects all dead Zerglings for free at your main hive at the rate of 10 or so every 30 seconds. That is pretty hard to pass up. Most Zerg units also gain three unique mutations that you can switch out between levels. For instance, you can fine-tune the acidic suicide bomber banelings to dish out more damage, increase the radius of their explosions, or make their explosions heal friendly units. The ability to switch Kerrigan's abilities and unit mutations between levels allows you to build an army that caters to your play style.

The other major change from WOL relates to research. In WOL, you often had to choose between two upgrades, but you never had the opportunity to test them in advance. In HOTS, you get to develop new strains of various Zerg units, but special evolution missions let you test both possible strains before you make your decision. Possibly the most overpowered example is the ultralisk, which is already the most formidable Zerg ground unit. You can create a strain of ultralisks that are resurrected almost immediately at the exact spot where they died. Couple that with a mutation that increases their health every time they hit a unit, tack on some hive queens following them for healing purposes, and finally add Kerrigan or a pack of antiair units, and you become practically unstoppable. This sort of thing can make HOTS' campaign much easier than WOL, but sometimes it's fun to see what unbalanced, ludicrous action plays out on screen.

Unfortunately, while the campaign is a blast, much of Heart of the Swarm's writing ranges from cliched, to mediocre, to comically bad. The single biggest disappointment is the depiction of Kerrigan. In the original games, when she was the self-described "queen bitch of the universe," Sarah Kerrigan was a great villain. She played the victim card to manipulate others into paving her way to complete dominion over the Zerg swarm. Once that was done, she mercilessly obliterated those useful idiots and mocked their grieving comrades. The old Kerrigan was manipulative, power-hungry, ruthless, and totally unapologetic about it. She had character.

The new Kerrigan is boring, and her actions are often incomprehensible. After a series of happenstances end her (entirely unconvincing) romantic subplot with Jim Raynor, she devotes all her energy toward killing the Dominion's dastardly Emperor Arcturus Mengsk. Of course, to accomplish this, she inevitably has to re-infest herself with Zerg essence and reclaim control of the swarm. This could have been the start of an interesting story about how she reconciles her recently reclaimed humanity with her role in the Zerg army. Unfortunately, Kerrigan's lack of consistency or even a coherent character arc ruins that opportunity. For example, at the end of one mission, she spares the lives of wounded Dominion soldiers, but upon returning to her ship, she orders a broodmother to wipe an entire planet without batting an eye. It feels like she just flips a coin to determine whether she's going to act like Genghis Khan or a bleeding heart.

Besides the campaign, there is, of course, the multiplayer, which remains thrilling whether you are competitive or just in the mood for a comp stomp. All three factions allow for a huge range of strategies. You will destroy and be destroyed in quick rushes and tense, protracted matches. Cloaked units will sneak past your defenses and slip into your base through an unnoticed blind spot. Both sides might simultaneously attack each others' strongholds with enormous air armadas, which is a terrifying circumstance to behold. A giant online community ensures that day or night, you will never hurt for either a ranked or unranked game. It's disappointing, though, that only seven units are new to the expansion.

Two of the new units are improved versions of existing ones. The Terran hellbat is an enhanced take on WOL's hellion, a flame-spewing vehicle that's perfect for burning Zerglings and that can transform into a humanoid mecha unit. The Protoss get the mothership core, which can eventually be upgraded into WOL's mothership, an incredible support ship that, among its other abilities, cloaks all nearby friendly units. The core doesn't have that power, but it can teleport itself and nearby units to a Protoss base of your choosing. Additionally, it detects cloaked units and is useful for blowing up ground units.

On the Zerg side, the fungus-like swarm host can burrow in the ground and release locusts, which are short-lived units that attack ground targets from range. While they are great base defenders in the campaign, they seem more useful for their ability to release locusts and then scurry off. Unfortunately, they are fairly slow and easily killed. The other new Zerg unit is the viper, a flying unit that can obscure the vision of enemy units or grab them with its prehensile tongue. Unfortunately, vipers can regenerate energy only by leeching health off of Zerg structures. Furthermore, air superiority units blow them out of the sky with stunning efficiency. Both of the new Zerg units could be deadly in the hands of a skilled micromanager, but mere mortals may have problems maximizing their potential.

No Caption Provided

Another new unit is the Terran widow mine, a cloaked contraption that burrows in the ground and fires missiles at any units that get too close. The Protoss, however, get two new air units that help cement their role as the undisputed masters of the skies. Their oracles are support ships that fiddle with the space-time continuum, slowing down enemy units considerably. Tempests are capital ships that have a respectable range and can target both ground and air units. Putting some of those and a few carriers next to a mothership is just nasty. You can't help but feel sorry for the Zerg, who, at least on a nonprofessional level, seem to have a hard time countering a massive aerial offensive.

Unsurprisingly, Heart of the Swarm glows with technical and artistic mastery. The cinematics are beautiful, even when the story veers into absurdity. One fantastically ridiculous sequence involves a masterfully animated fight between Kerrigan and Protoss hero Zeratul. Kerrigan zooms around, leaping 30 feet in the air to dive-bomb Zeratul, whaling on him with both physical and psychic attacks, and finally hurling the poor fellow through a pillar. At this point, she finally stops and asks him why he has come by for a visit. Naturally, he just wanted to help; no fight needed. Levels are attractive and feature diverse locales, including an inhospitable ice planet, heavily urbanized Terran cities, and a primordial world full of dinosaur-like primal Zerg. There are plenty of small details that breathe life into these worlds, like distinct flora and fauna or wreckage from previous battles. The units look great (especially when they are being slaughtered by Zerglings), and the sound design is properly alien.

No Caption Provided

While Starcraft II is a great real-time strategy game, it hasn't evolved much in light of other strategy games, though that familiarity is part of its appeal. Many fine touches--the "select whole army" button, the clever dialogue when you click on a unit too many times, the hotkeys for unique power--are appreciated, but not new. HOTS also lacks the contextual dialogue you hear in The Battle for Middle-earth or Relic's more recent games. It would be more interesting to hear Kerrigan shout something like "Zerglings, destroy that bunker" or "Retreat to the hive!" rather than incessantly repeat lines like "Mengsk must suffer" and "I am the swarm."

And so Heart of the Swarm is a safe expansion, but it's also an excellent one. If you've spent the last two years hankering to run amok with the delightfully diverse Zerg swarm, you're in luck, because you'll have no trouble scratching that itch with the gameplay you know and love. The lackluster story is disappointing, but taking control of the Zerg--those nutty world-devouring insectoid-dinosaur hybrids--makes Heart of the Swarm well worth the investment.

Sarah "Sociopath" Kerrigan : Killing millions in order to get revenge on one guy. Other than a great bod, never understood what Raynor saw in her. I think Nova is single, Jim.

Wow. They must have really gotten insane with the writing. I mean, wings of liberty wasnt great story wise. It was cheesy. And campy at times. But it was tolerable. Thats a shame too, because the voice actors are actually reallly good. Even with the bad writing they deliver appropriate tones, emotion, and timing. I cant help but think if this had good writing, they would have gotten the 'terrifc voice acting' medal too. Oh well. Golden gameplay and artwork is enough for me.

DS 3 awakened and Gears got the shaft while this gets a solid 8.0? All 3 are rehashes with a new spin to try to make things more interesting. It's like GS have been in a bad mood lately.

yeah but this is less of a rehash. the 1st starcraft came out in 98. And this is an expansion to WoL. Gears of war is a rehash of something that came out a year ago. I dont think they exactly compare.

Okay, so the 'writing' didn't live up to...what? WoL? We all saw how much the last Starcraft deviated from it's father. We KNEW that this series was taking a turn for the 'slightly more light-hearted'. Mr. reviewer have you ever seen a Transformers, or Star Wars? That is some of the most god-awful dialogue in HISTORY man!

All I know is that there are AT LEAST 5 movies coming out this year with terrible writing, but will still make oodles of dough. Besides, I didn't pay for a damned Greek tragedy; i wanted a thrilling, action-packed story of revenge. And that is what we got. Quitcherbitchin Nancy.

@pcgamer194 So you're basically saying, "Oh, stop complaining. The story could have been worse... Just look at all these other terrible things on the market." The campaign was very poorly written, end of story. You can't make something bad look good by placing it next to things that are worse. If that was the case, then there would be no difference between what's good and what's bad.

The part where Kerrigan fights Zeratul really annoyed me. There was zero thought going through Kerrigan's mind at that moment, she just decided to beat the crap out of him for just being there.

@shadow580 well they did try to kill eachother at least 6 times throughout the entire story. she never was friends with zeratul when she was human, hell she never even met zeratul when she was human. raynor was the one who made friends with the protoss.

Good and honest review. And may I also say, thank you Gamespot, for making it clear to everyone that the story is just GOD-AWFUL! Ever since the game came out I've been telling people that I like the game but I'm very disappointed with Kerrigan and the story. So many fanatics would then jump on me and bash me for it. I'm glad to know that there are still intelligent people out there and that Gamespot was honest and realistic about the game's plot.

I'll bite, why was the story bad? I'll even go to private messages if you want, but this was seriously the most satisfying story I've played in years. I'd have legitimate debate on why this game is good.

Why is she inconsistent? Why is it poorly written? I wont jump down your throat, I want your take on it

Disagree about multiplayer balance (latest tournament showed a Zerg roflstomping a Terran which are "OP" with their mines). Story is right though, it is even worse than WoL.

@Miroku32 Oh yeah, if you call Life 4-2ing Flash roflstomping, then sure. There where mistakes done in those games that had nothing to do with the changes in HOTS such as misreading the opponent and improperly dealing with harass.

@shadow580 @Miroku32 Pretty sure Life saved Terran from getting nerfed. All the pros there had a general consensus that zerg was teh worst and even Leenock himself said no zergs top 8 before Life happen to make it. As Browder says, its going to take 3-6 months til HoTS is tuned properly. Think of the lack of new units we saw. People havent had enough experience with it yet.

@Redmoonxl2 @Erick @shadow580 @Miroku32 I agree that Daniel probably had only "x" amount of time on the Multiplayer, and I get if you want to harp on him for saying something is OP or if he sees the community saying that. The community says it because the Pros say it, and they take their word as truth. Of course that's up to debate, but like I said at MLG Dallas people/pro's were complaining about oracles, terran medivac boosts, etc etc. Its all over, and people tend to gravitate to those opinions especially if you've been beat by those strategies.

That said that's what makes the game fun, is that its ever evolving and people are figuring out new strats etc etc. Of course the review though is here for day 1 or week 1 of play for people other than those that focus on MP. MP is just an aspect of the game, albeit a big one to some. There is still SP to consider. Healthy discussion is good though! :P

"Think of the lack of new units we saw. People havent had enough experience with it yet."

Most important thing to think about when it comes to HotS' current metagame. If the pros haven't got the game figured out by now, I seriously doubt Daniel does either.

Aside from the multiplayer balancing issue, that's a debate no man can agree on, this review seems fair and accurate. I hated the story mode too. I thought it was poorly done compared to WoL.

Your shunning the story for actually "trying" to be good? Considering the GOD aweful Diablo 3 plot that was surpisingly consistant yet compleatley shattered the genre itself, id say this actually remained surpisingly true to the origional intention of being a space noir story. Sorry but this game has nothing for it "save" its enjoyable campaign and map editor, the e-sport rts is a dying thing of the past, and while it may be the selling point of SC2, it will never be the greatest feature of it.

I am rather offended that the story was bashed, compaired to the trashy aweful lore breaking of WOTLK and Cataclysm this was one of blizzards better efforts at remaining consistant to its plot, while developing it forwards in a believeable direction. Several times this game made refferences to its past predacessors but continued to show Kerrigan was not a hero but a true badass that wasnt afraid to do some questionable, harsh and downright malicious things to proove her point.

She's not a villain, she's an anti hero, not same thing last time I heard.

I really enjoyed the story but can say nothing about the multiplayer. I did watch the MLG Dallas livestream and every player that was interviewed was blaming the other races of how OP either drops are for Terran or Oracle for Protoss. And lo' and behold a Zerg actually won the tournament which blew my mind since, according to the cynics, was the least powerful race.

I would of given it a 9/10.

To paraphrase the review on MP balance, "Zerg is Underpowered/hard to play, Skytoss is overpowered."

One Protoss made it to MLG Dallas Winter 2013 Semifinals, Zerg wins whole tournament. Wat.

Also, it doesn't take a pro to know that commenting on multiplayer balance without understanding how the game work is foolish. To lament that an automated siege unit is ineffective on it's own and that a Zerg air spellcaster is too vulnerable to focus fire is the most hilariously bad commentary on a game's metagame I have ever heard. I wonder how you felt about infestors on its own being weak against superior ground units. Stay free, Gamespot.

Protip: It doesn't take a genius to figure out that using drones to make disposable evo chambers is a cost efficient way for vipers to gain energy. Also, have them be escorted if you don't want to lose them.

@Redmoonxl2 It doesn't take a pro. But it does take a strong-willed and intelligent individual to with-stand a 1 v. 1 ladder loss without blaming the loss on balance. So many people simply can't understand that, especially when emotions interfere.

@Redmoonxl2 Of course, this reviewer obviously don't play MP. He just talk as if he knows what he's saying. A lot of his statements came from the community (in fact, BETA tester community, which is FALSE in the released version)

How can he be a professional reviewer without actually playing the game is beyond me.

@NanoPath @Redmoonxl2 Nah, he played multiplayer. Starcraft II is just based around it's competitive scene and you have to intensely dedicate yourself to the game if you're hoping to have some knowledge of how it works.

The reviewer simply didn't play enough. He lost some games and assumed the rest.

@Redmoonxl2 @Kevin-V @Sardinar I don't care about his view on balance.

What I care is: HOW CAN HE USE ABILITIES THAT GOT CHANGED DURING THE BETA?

Example: Oracle time warp is no longer there; Mothership core don't reveal any clocked units.

What he says is BASED ON THE BETA, NOT THE RELEASED VERSION. How can you accept this kind of review?

This is supposed to be official review, not some beta review.

One more thing; Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with this review pointing to accurate flaws with HotS (Story), but IGN's HotS reviewer took the high road in saying that he cannot even begin to comment on the game's balance accurately. I think everybody, including the SC2 community, regularly forgets how deep this game is at this point.

The problem with any feedback this early in the metagame is that we're not even close to getting a clear picture on how the game should be played. New units weren't just added, everything from upgrades to abilities have been completely removed (Mech upgrades), changed (Burrow is now Hatch tech), or remade to serve different roles (Reapers in general). Taking this as a whole is too much to take in and confidently discuss a little over a week after the expansion's release.

Bnet forums aren't going to reflect that reality I spoke of and will devolve any discussion into a crying game of balance. Going by the history of "balance discussions" from the community, we wouldn't have Zerg or Protoss champions in pro leagues because Terran is always best. This is why merely pointing out what the community says is meaningless; you need a ton of facetime in multiplayer before you can begin to understand how these additions and changes should be used before commenting on their effectiveness, otherwise you are just parroting ignorance. I have a hard time taking anybody seriously when they say that the viper's biggest flaw is that it falls to superior air units while ignoring their potential as a unit. Infestors fall to superior ground units, and they ultimately were WoL Zerg's most important unit. Funny enough, when WoL was released, infestors were deemed useless. People will never learn.

@NanoPath @Sardinar Actually, most of the community feedback I have heard is that Protoss air is o/p, and that Terran medivac and widow mines also have some balance problems. Daniel played enormous amounts of this game. Regardless, it isn't as though his views are just his own; there is plenty of player feedback pointing out the same things.

Are you saying it's *bad* that the review would point out things that the community may also point out? Would you prefer he contradict? Why is pointing out something that many other players point out a *bad* thing?

I loved every minute of the campaign. I couldn't wait to see Kerrigan get her revenge against Mengsk.

Legacy of the Void should be an epic conclusion to this trilogy.

Yeh i finished the game this weekend, and yes, comparing to SC1 and BW, the story is weak. That said, i was 15 years old back them. Imagina how weak the stoy feels now...

The ultimate sacrifice made by Tassadar to kill the Overmind is now a smilling Kerrigan...

Gamespot where "Halo" or "Call of Duty" are great stories, make your own reviews, don't copy them from other sites

I like the new Kerrigan she's personable unlike Kerrigan in the original game who just got ticked off and infected and blew stuff up well she walked over the body's of her fallen foes.....

Ok maybe i did like the old Kerrigan hehe.

I love how Blizzard polishes everything to a point where some people, in my opinion, fail to recognize obvious flaws in the game's narrative because of 'pretty cutscenes' or 'good voice acting.'

Same with Diablo 3, some people actually thought the game's story was pretty good. I just can't get myself to agree with that notion to any extent.

@Sardinar Thank goodness I'm not the only one who took notice.
Blizzard has this strange spell they cast over idiots that make them shout "10 OUT OF 10" to any release.
