State Of Decay 2 Review: The Limping Dead

  • First Released May 18, 2018
    released
  • XONE

Zombie pest control.

State of Decay 2 sometimes feels like a far-too-real representation of the mundane reality that comes with surviving a zombie apocalypse. Consistently being on the hunt for food, resources to craft ammunition, and survivors to bolster your ranks doesn’t always translate into a captivating gameplay loop--especially when you’re faced with horrors other than the countless undead that roam around you.

Like the first game from Undead Labs, State of Decay 2 infrequently checks in with an overarching narrative. You’re given the choice of three pairs of survivors to start off with, each with their own bare-bones background stories. Those stories don’t really matter, but your decision does define your starting area and the preliminary survivors you’ll team up with to combat a growing sickness called the Blood Plague. The plague is the singular goal for you to work against, as your community strives to eradicate it from your town and build towards a brighter future.

Now Playing: State of Decay 2 Video Review

That mission boils down to finding zombie-invested settlements that you’ll need to first scout out and ultimately destroy, with grotesque, beating Plague Hearts at the center. These fights are the only real way to measure progression through State of Decay 2’s otherwise open-ended campaign. Each settlement you conquer strengthens the rest, forcing you to step back and regroup before attempting to blow up the next. They're the toughest challenges the game has to offer, too, serving up waves of foes for you to fight as you valiantly lob another Molotov at the heart, hoping it vaporizes and takes all the nearby undead with it. Unfortunately, they are basic action set-pieces at their core, without much variety to help shake up the otherwise monotonous scavenging that surrounds them.

No Caption Provided

State of Decay 2 is primarily about survival, and it bears all the baggage the genre is known for. Although you’re spared the stress of dealing with individual meters for hunger and thirst, you’ll instead be engaging with ones that affect your community. Food, medical supplies, and crafting materials all factor into the stability of your community, with the overall mood of your survivors governing how well you’re doing. Supplies are littered around the dilapidated and abandoned settlements surrounding you, which are easily scouted with a little high ground. Your objectives hardly stray from going out, clearing an area of enemies, and scrounging around for consumables, gear, and large rucksacks of the more pertinent supplies you’ll need to keep settlers happy.

The act of gathering these supplies is rarely gratifying, though. Although your settlement initially requires some quick work to get on its feet, State of Decay 2 hardly feels like it will fail you for slacking on your routine duties. Certain base structures, for example, have daily resources costs that might trick you into thinking you’ll need a steady supply coming through. But because days tick by so slowly (I finished my core objectives within the first 10 days) this never becomes a real concern. Resources only become troublesome when you need them to craft something specific, such as ammo or plague cures. They’re short-lived problems though, which hardly force you to pause and think about how you’re setting up your settlement. It’s rare for State of Decay 2 to make you feel pressure over the choices you make, which just make all of its interesting sub-systems feel shallow.

It’s a pity, too, because so many of them could’ve added a much-needed layer of strategy. As an example, your base features a threat level which governs how likely you are to attract a zombie attack. Creating new structures or powering them with generators creates noise and in turn increases the likelihood of an attack for a certain period. But even at the highest level, a community of just six members strong is often enough to fend off these attacks without needing explicit intervention on your part. Of the handful of moments that my character was radioed to return, the fight was over by the time I arrived. All structures intact, all survivors unharmed.

State of Decay 2 squanders systems like this by not giving you a reason to engage with them seriously. If your aim is to continually bring new survivors to a settlement but also worry about their well-being, your encounters with each new face should feature more scrutiny as to what they bring to the table. Their distinct abilities set them apart from each other, but not in a way that forces you to make tough decisions about who to invite into your settlement.

The friendlier survivors you encounter are injected with a sense of individuality thanks to numerous perks that come pre-assigned to them. One specialising in swordplay will be more effective with a bladed weapon, while another with computer skills can help expand your base of operations. The sheer breadth of options on offer might trick you into thinking that scrutinizing each potential new addition to your settlement is key, but that’s not the case. Frequently, State of Decay 2 informs you that clashing personalities are leading to fights at home base, but these never escalate to a point where you’re required to take action. You’ll never feel the need to exile an existing character or deny entry to one based on their lack of specific skills.

Graphical hitches are frequent, including enemies clipping through the environment and sometimes having entire hordes stuck on single piece of the environment.

Combat isn’t as dynamic as some character-specific abilities might suggest, but it is satisfying nonetheless. A single button is used for attacks, which depending on your weapon of choice could inflict blunt knockback damage and force an enemy to the floor or slowly slice away at them limb by limb. Each approach comes with its advantages and drawbacks. Bladed weapons deal with larger groups of enemies more efficiently but tend to be far less durable than a sledgehammer or tire iron. These bulkier weapons require you to take an additional action to finish off enemies on the ground, which might leave you open to getting surrounded. Either way, the gory finishers and gruesome sound effects really bring a weight to the melee action, even if you’re just mindlessly mashing the same button until your stamina expires. Firearms feature too, and ammunition for them is far more abundant than you might expect. Gunshots attract more zombies (even with silencers), but it’s the sluggish aiming that's ultimately more frustrating in practice.

State of Decay 2 does a fair job of mixing things up with the introduction of some new enemy types. While some less interesting additions suchs as exploding Bloaters feature more than they deserve to, two others shake up combat in delightful ways. Ferals will jolt around at high speeds, avoiding your melee swings and making firearms a nightmare to connect with. Similarly, Juggernauts make up the largest foes you’ll face on the frontier. They’ll soak up hits from vehicles and rounds of ammunition before giving you a chance to take them down with a satisfying execution. Combined with regular, lumbering enemies that will quickly surround you, Juggernauts make fights more about clever crowd control.

No Caption Provided

Often though, it’s the game itself that will do its best to deter you from playing rather than its lack of depth. State of Decay 2 runs extremely poorly, even on Xbox One X. Despite not standing out graphically in any regard, the framerate will frequently dip well below its 30 frames per second target, sometimes locking up momentarily when the action is thick on screen. As a result, inputs can often feel incredibly sluggish and unresponsive, which just becomes annoying when you’re trying to swing your way out of a supply run gone sideways. Lighting can sometimes be striking, especially in dawn and dusk situations, but State of Decay 2 lacks a visual theme to tie itself up with and just ends up looking drab and boring. This is all stacked on top of a motion blur that is so aggressive that even the slightest movement turns your surroundings into an unattractive smudge.

Bugs are prominent too and can range from slightly annoying to near game-breaking. Graphical hitches are frequent, including enemies clipping through the environment and sometimes having entire hordes stuck on single piece of the environment. Enemies also routinely drop from the sky if you’re racing across the map quickly, which you’ll do often when you’re travelling in any one of the vehicles present on the map. Physics will miscalculate, launching your vehicle in the air from a slight touch at low speeds. Companions are also particularly prickly. Some following you on missions will disappear for no reason, while I personally had a single instance of a community member disappearing entirely and being eliminated from my pool of characters upon starting the game. One other instance saw one of my characters locked out from use in perpetuity for no apparent reason, while other times some would be stuck in an endless loop of the same boring dialogue for an entire mission. State of Decay 2 is in rough shape as it stands.

Perhaps if State of Decay 2 had the kind of depth that drew you in, these technical faults would be easier to overlook. But it’s because of the lack of meaningful motivations that they stick out so predominantly. State of Decay 2 settles into a rhythm that might be easy for you to pass some hours with, but it’s never a ride with genuine surprises, excitement or purpose. There’s promise in so many systems that it introduces, but they’re woefully underutilized to make space for repetitive activities that are nowhere near as exciting to engage with. State of Decay 2 feels like the lumbering enemies that populate its country mountains. Aimless, wandering, and just out of place.

The Good

  • Some systems successfully convey the demands of a zombie apocalypse
  • Combat is simple but gratifying, with suitably gory finishers

The Bad

  • So many systems are underutilized, leading to a distinct lack of depth
  • A lack of visual themes that makes everything look dull
  • Numerous bugs that range from annoying to game breaking
  • Aggressive motion blur that can’t be adjusted
  • Fails to entice you into starting a new community to experience other characters and environments

I just got this for PC on XBox Live and I am having a blast. I got my first gaming PC less than a year ago and collected over 250 games, at least 100 AAA+ titles, and State of Decay 2 is one of the best so far - probably top 10%. Unlike most games it's easy to get into and doesn't make you sit through half an hour of title screens and cartoon puppet shows before you actually start playing. I have yet to encounter a bug or stumbling block, so these may have been patched out by this time.

With only a few hours in it would be premature for me to rate it, but if pressed right now I'd give it 9/10.

I hesitated to buy this, but ended up doing so a week after release. I bought a physical copy, and when I popped it into the xb1 it then downloaded a 20 plus gb patch, which I have since read was a different build of the game.

Having played it for a few weeks on and off, I can say it's very entertaining. The game cost me £20. I judge the value of a game by how much it costs and how long I play it. I consider a £1 an hour a reasonable return on my investment. So far, I'm 40 plus hours in so I'm doing well in the bang for buck value market.

I've encountered a few minor bugs, and the slowdown. In that 40 hours the game has frozen up needing a restart 3 times, but NOT a system reboot. I'm happy with this game and my personal score? 7/10.

It's pretty sad when people feel the need to defend the purchase of a game riddled with bugs. The game's unfinished and any game is lucky to receive a score like a 5 when they release a glorified beta for rrp.

Iam loving the game, its highly addictive! You think youve spent half an hour on it, but really youve spent about 3 hours playing!

However all these issues people have been complaining about in regards of performance I havent had any issues with.
I just ask that when it comes to dealing with an infected member of the blood plague is too come up with a second option when it comes to euthanizing or exiling members of the community!
When I first got the game I accidentally did both. And with me now onto my second community they are the only people I have lost.

I love the differences in characters, although ive got one thats a bit useless as shes only got 1 lung!

But for plague hearts I highly recommend using a 50 caliber rifle, only takes 3 hits to kill it! Can destroy it without even being touched by a single zombie easily!

This game is extremely fun and addictive!!!! a 5 is BS it has bugs but nothing to the point to give this game a 5 and the type of bugs we are talking here will be smoothed out. Every person i've met (IRL) loves the game and is having just as much fun as i am. Point blank if you want a game you'll have fun playing and you like the Zombie Apocalypse entertainment its the game for you!

I love Xbox, but they're really not doing so good lately. It's kind of sad. The last Xbox exclusive that I really had a lot of fun with was Forza Horizon 3. But not much of anything to speak of before or after it.

It's exactly what we asked for: The first game, with co-op added in. It's also exactly what was released last time: a very complete game, with a LOT of bugs -- mostly the hilarious "car flung through the air on a guardrail into your invisible teammate or horde" variety.

Just like last time, in a few months this will be nearly bug-free. I really tried to wait to play it, but the survival-zombie "just one more salvage mission" gameplay loop is very addictive.

XBox really needs a knockout release at this point. Really hoping Crackdown 3 pulls that off. Sony has the advantage of owning great 2nd Party Developers like Santa Monica Studios (God of War), Guerrilla Games (Horizon: Zero Dawn, Killzone) and Naughty Dog (Uncharted) where as I can think of any legendary 2nd Party studios Microsoft owns, other than Rare. But Rare's legacy hasn't held up well. I really wish I had a reason to power on my XBox One...

This game has some serious bugs. No question it needs improvement, but at it's core, it's not a bad game. But what is really missed here is that for $30 you get TWO versions of the game that can both be played at the same time by two different people together. One on PC and one on Xbox One. Who else is doing that? Play Anywhere is one of the best innovations in gaming. Give them time to fix it, though it seems like this is the new normal for us to be paying beta testers...

And here I came to see comments about the game and what do I find? Yet another ranting of console wars. Is every microsoft/xbox game review/news a stage for fanboys to rant about Console War like is 2013? Don't you people ever get tired? "OMG!!! PS4 is SOOOOOO much better than Xbox!", "MS Sux, Sony Rlz!". It´s been years since both launches people, move on.

Beside, everybody knows that PC Master Race is god among peasants. Console can keep your "exclusive" titles (90% coming to PC in 6 months or out already).

Now, About the game: Played the game. Yes, many bugs and fps sudden drop. Some bugs really anoying(like car fliping and model clipping). Could use a little more interesting mechanic for the narrative. This review claims it's easy. A review made on May 18 on this very site, claimed it was too difficult. To me it's fun! Playing with a party of 4 is really fun(despite many bugs). Getting surrounded at night in an Infestation and screaming for your mates to leave you behind so they don't die as well, SO FREAKING EPIC!

"Dude! We are not gonna leave you!!!", "There are 2 Ferals and 1 Juggernaught if you come for me you will die too, save yourselves!! Tell Gina I love here!"

Reading the bias commentary is like the DC fans claiming the same. Look, I get it, MS is having a hard time getting a solid exclusive.

But there's obviously no bias when you actually use the scientific method and look at the first two years of PS4 exclusive scores. Argument signed, sealed, and delivered.

This generation:

Sony games = over rated

Xbox games = under rated

This is a fun, addictive game way better than a 5. All the negative reviews almost put me off playing it but I loved the first one and decided to give this a shot. Well, it's just like the first but better in every way! That alone is worth more than "5". The only mundane thing is Gamespot and it's constant bias toward anything Sony.....

SoD2 is a actually a much better game than this review makes it out to be. Which is kinda common at this point in the gen since piling on Xbox this gen has become the cool/expected thing to do, especially on GS.

Xbox games are held to unrealistically high expectations and the more games they bring out that aren't 10/10 games the harsher the criticism and higher expectations seems to get. Same thing happened with Ryse, ReCore and Superlucky. The funny thing is the outstanding games MS has brought out this gen (Forza, FH, Halo 5) get brushed off as 'games no one cares about' or nitpicked and downplayed in the same fashion.

I'm not saying the game doesn't have issues, but its definitely better than a 5, its more like a 7.5. Especially if you actually liked the first game because this one actually improved on pretty much everything in the original game. Yes its got some bugs, but if you actually put any time into it its a pretty fun and challenging game. I'm playing on X1X and I haven't really had many graphics issues and its a pretty good looking game. The biggest issue for me has been the wonky terrain.

What sold me on this game was actually getting into an unexpected shootout/ongoing war with another group of survivors following a dialogue exchange in an instance where we were supposed to trading. Then managing to eventually wipe them and having some of their survivors join my community. The RPG elements of this game are great and its something that not many games have done on this level barring Divinity and Pillars.

I get people want Sony level first party from MS which is fine. But don't miss out on this game based on this review. If you like the genre its worth playing.

Off topic - What really would have pushed this game over the top would have been adding a battle royale type mode where maybe 4 players are operating on the same game and have to decide to either join their communities or fight each either like TWD, with maybe a player controlling the zombie faction or killed off players becoming the zombie faction.

@oflow: Playing solo I also did not see that many bugs aside from the drop frame rate when driving car. The reeeeaaallly buggy stuff happens when playing with friends. Supply box becoming unavailable for the joined player, clipping go through the roof, buildings not rendering on the base...

But you are right. The game is FUN! When talking to another enclave of survivors I'm always packing heat. Never know when they will wait for you to turn and start shooting at your back to try to rob you (It happened!). RPG elements and resource management exist but not to a point of becoming a chore. Really like. Hope they fix the bugs

Someone mentioned the flickering horizontal line across the screen. I didn't notice it at first, but I have it as well. Game is much better once you understand the little things they don't explain very well in the tutorial. I couldn't figure out at first why people were leaving. I didn't realize there was a mission tied to getting them to stop whining. I was just trying to find whatever they were complaining about. Check your map often. Biggest bug I found is tied to sneaking and being over-encumbered. If I dropped something to make room for something else and later picked it up while crouched down, I would get stuck in that position with my melee weapon out, but couldn't use it. Or use any other button. Pretty much have to quit if alone or change to a companion. Hopefully this doesn't happen during a mission. Haven't played it on Xbox yet, so no idea if the bugs translate. Update: Will give this game a rest until patches are released. Too hard to enjoy while this buggy.

@gunnyninja: I had that horizontal line (especially obvious at night time) on the One X but after heading back to the game today (first time since the patch) it appears to be gone like 99% of the bugs.

Downloaded it this morning, way better than a 5/10 I would say, more like a 7. I have yet to encounter a bug in the 4 or so hours I have played so far but even if I did bugs are normal day 1 and generally get patched rather quickly (maybe some already have looking around at critical reviews on a pre release version). I am really enjoying the game on the One X and can see me spending a lot of time juggling this in with my already overwhelming backlog of games.

@csward: Whilst being a hardcore gamer is hardly something to brag about, calling people casuals shows you wear that badge of honor with pride. Unfortunately your moronic comment came with assumptions rather than getting the facts.

Gamed since 1989 (I was 3) and have continued happily ever since.

I have 350 games on my Xbox One and game quite heavily, however my backlog is making it difficult to catch up, especially being in a team on Forza 7 (All Clean Racers)

https://www.xboxgamertag.com/search/ACR-SPEARMAN/

Assuming that somebody is a casual because they have had a clean bug free run (at the time of posting)is heavily stupid. Since that post I have had 2 instances of the game camera sticking in 1 place when I enter a vehicle and not following the car (Exited to main menu and reloaded to fix) and I got stuck inside some shelving (there is a button in game to press for instances like these). Hardly a broken game for me. I can after all only go off my own experiences when I have actually played the game which is proven in the above link.

A note to MS from an XOX owner. You can't beat your chest about having the most powerful console on the market when you put out a 1st party game like SOD2 and it looks like a PS2 game graphically. and it's a rushed out buggy mess. wtf? Even the Crackdown 3 graphics looked really average from gameplay videos out there. What's more mind boggling is how can they get SSX3 (released in 2003) which is BC on XOX to look really incredible in 4K... but we get this visual garbage for a new 2018 game? What is going on with MS 1st party? Awful.

@ohjtbehaaave: It's not really a 1st party AAA game, small devs with publishing from Microsoft. Putting that into consideration I thought it looked pretty decent on my One X when you consider it's from a small studio.

@ohjtbehaaave:
Its actually pretty simple: The Team worked with a new Engine with the same Team-size as the first one.It is a small Game by a indipendent developer,MS is just the Publisher. And a 30 Bucks game.

SSX3 is a AAA-Game from 2003,with a completely different focus - tecnical, gameplay and from a graphical standpoint. You could say that a game like SSX is a lot less work overall.

this one had the microsoft games studio support and it is using U4 which is a powerful and optimized engine. i have seen lots of developers even indi ones using U4 and they have made good games with less bugs and greater visual quality. i did not compare this game with God of war, I am just simply saying even a 30$ game should develop and work correctly when you have such powerful supporter like Microsoft. why they did not make it a 60 $ game?they spent so many years developing a game that people expected to be a AAA title and it is not. it is look like remaster version of the original game.not a good story no good characters no emotions. by the way it is not only gamespot that reviewed it as mediocre but lots of other medias are reviewing it this way so simply it is not a good game.

@rezagtx2017:
Actually Epic is the only deveoloper without major Problems regading UE4.Almost all others are struggeling and even if you can find nice Demos of it,there are not many Games using it right now because of that.

I'm playing this game on PC and I'm loving it. I find it a real shame this game is getting a double dipping of hate because it's brought to us by XBOX.

I'm enjoying it a lot, although I can't argue with the technical issues. The game is really glitchy, particularly on PC although Xbox isn't much better. Weird lines on the screen, "screen door effect" patterns that you walk through, weak lighting that makes seeing stuff at night pretty hard, low frame rate, closed doors that appear as open until you smack into them, etc.

However, I like the core gameplay. The above stuff can be fixed over time. The bones of a game (if they are poor) usually can't be repaired. I get genuinely stressed when I think I'm going to lose a character or characters, and a single mistake (especially when you're far from home or an outpost) can easily result in permdeath.

Absolutely nowhere in this review is it mentioned that this game is $30, not $60. It's being reviewed like a triple-A game while it is not. Sure, the game is has glitches and behaves wonky sometimes but it's nothing compared to games like Skyrim or Far Cry.

Ultimately, my impression is that the game feels more like a remaster/expansion pack than a sequel. However, I'm sure for a studio the size of Undead Labs, rewriting the foundation to support multi-player (which they've done pretty well) and give it a face-lift were all they could handle.

If you enjoyed State of Decay, you'll enjoy this one. If you just want to complain about "Yet Another Zombie Game", I'm sure there's an annual release of Call of Duty or FIFA due out soon for you play.

@DeviantCode: I get what you're saying, but it brings up an old debate of "is it worth factoring in the price of a game when reviewing it for quality?" I think it's fair to not try to do an apples to apples comparison between an indie title and a AAA title like God of War or Horizon: Zero Dawn when it comes to technical merits like graphical fidelity, but at the same time a cheap game should be able to stand on its own as a complete game regardless of the price, and there are plenty of cheap, indie games that doesn't suffer from all the faults of SoD2. Still, I really enjoy it based on the core gameplay concepts and in spite of the bugs. I wouldn't have given it a 5 necessarily, but I think a 6 or 7 would be fair. Also, bugs are something that can potentially be fixed over time.

@Byshop: I agree with everything you've said and also think a 6 or 7 would be fair. My "cost" comments come from the seeming double-standard games like Skyrim and FarCry get to enjoy. Those games are at least as glitchy as SoD2 and ARE triple-A, but reviewers fall all over themselves to call Far Cry's glitches 'endearing' instead because the eye-candy is prettier.

The dev team had such a great opportunity to design this game in a way that gave the players the emotional rollercoaster ride that a true zombie apocalypse/survival game should have. But instead, they designed it with no emotions and just a stagnant feeling with basically no purpose. What a disappointment. Even modders would have done a better job.

It's bad to see Xbox exclusives so poorly optimized and you have a game like God of war that running on basic ps4 very good and shines on pro at 60 fps or 4kT. The One X is a just a hardware but software ommm? what is wrong with microsoft.??

@rezagtx2017:

It isn´t poorly optimized,it isn´t perfect on any System. The game is from a really small indie-team and not finished. The first wasn´t better at the Release.
And comparing it to a AAA-Product which is also sold for more then double the Price...

And: This is one of the worst Reviews worldwide by the way.

What do you mean by "poorly optimized XBox exclusives"?Does a The Last Guardian (which is a AAA-Title with 10 Years in Development) represent the whole PS4-Lineup as well?Just saying...
