The Legend of Korra Review

  • First Released Oct 21, 2014

Spiritual unenlightenment.

The Avatar universe is rich with fantastical history and earnest storytelling, but those elements are nowhere to be found in The Legend of Korra (the game, and not the excellent animated program), which tries its best to boot M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender film out of its rightful position as "worst Avatar-related thing yet produced." What rescues developer Platinum's short downloadable game from earning that not-so-coveted title is the elemental bending itself: it's not very complicated to perform, but it looks flashy and fun, and proves that The Legend of Korra could have (should have) been, at very least, a serviceable beat-em-up.

How depressing, then, that everything else about the game is considerably less than serviceable. It's no longer true that licensed games must automatically be destined for a digital landfill: too many worthy adventures have proven this needn't be the case. The Legend of Korra harks back to the days of branded hogwash, when the most we could hope for was functional gameplay and total disregard for the source material. Korra looks the part on the most superficial level, but possesses not one ounce of the flair and depth that characterize the television series. To say that the game delivers a bare minimum of story is to oversell the tale, which can be summarized thusly: "There's an evil old man doing evil, old-man things." Korra interacts with almost no one, and most line readings are from Korra's own internal monologue, spoken aloud so that the game might have a semblance of a plot. I knew the story was hopeless the moment Korra bemoaned how much damage her battle with Unavaatu had done to Republic City, even as I was blasting apart parked vehicles for the precious currency orbs I earned for doing so. Such irony, such narrative dissonance.

The game just sort of--starts. There's no real setup or introduction. You just go.
The game just sort of--starts. There's no real setup or introduction. You just go.

With nothing more to the story than a contrivance to force Korra to relearn her bending skills one at a time, and a few chances for Korra to announce her regret at leaving the spirit portals open, it's up to the action to fill the remaining crevasse, and it at least makes bending look as fluid and natural as it should. Once you learn every bending skill--water, earth, fire, and air, in that order--you can flip between them at will, pressing various buttons to create elemental combos as Korra performs her accompanying acrobatics. Mind you, the game is half over by the time you earn all four techniques, but bending has a button-mashy appeal, and it's not too difficult to perform The Legend of Korra's combos. Miniature cyclones disrupt clusters of spirits, and earthen eruptions send equalists reeling. Such displays do a fine enough job of expressing the vitality and vibrancy that characterize bending in the Avatar universe.

The problem with Korra isn't the combat itself, but the circumstances in which it's used, which alternate between boring and frustrating, but rarely find a sweet spot that could be called "fun." You fight one crowd of clones after another, facing various bending skills and other attacks while struggling to wrangle the camera and lock-on mechanism into submission. You will succumb to death, not because The Legend of Korra challenges you to develop expertise, but because encounters have no sense of flow, and various gameplay details are surprisingly careless. You might be in the midst of a combo and miss the chance to perform a finishing move because the button prompt appears so briefly and inconsistently. You might block in a timely fashion, yet still get flung into the energy barrier that surrounds the combat arena by a particularly powerful bender--and then get stuck in the barrier and pummeled to death. You might accidentally initiate a quick-time based melee sequence, but fail because your fingers were finishing up the desired combo and the QTE prompt didn't allow time to adjust.

No Caption Provided
Another mecha tank battle. And another. And another. And another.
Another mecha tank battle. And another. And another. And another.

Awkward platforming sequences vary the pace, at least, giving you the chance to both admire the pretty colors and confront how lifeless the world is. A few vehicles occasionally pass in the background, but the streets of Republic City are otherwise devoid of people and moving parts. There are boss battles too--or should I say, a couple of boss battles repeated multiple times until you're sick of seeing mecha tanks and performing the same block-and-QTE move over and over again. The Legend of Korra's only other attempts to diversify come in two forms, one of which is mildly entertaining: pro-bending matches. These matches are simple, but depict the game at its best, letting you bend, block, and dodge about without forcing you to brave the irritations that impede the primary adventuring.

The Legend of Korra's other kind of detour is of the (not quite endless) runner kind, which has you mounting your polar bear dog Naga and avoiding obstacles by jumping, swerving, and ducking while collecting health power-ups and currency. Your bending skills have different roles to play, here: water acts as a shield, for instance, while fire can blast a flimsy obstacle out of your way. These sequences are, at best, innocuous, provided you can handle the sight of poor Naga going limp every time you slam into a wall. At worst, they are frustrating bouts of trial-and-error repetition, culminating in a vexing antarctic running scene involving mecha tanks that have an eerie ability to exactly match your side-to-side movements. (Hint: activate your water shield, and the game's cheating will be much easier to manage.)

It's like Temple Run, only not as good.
It's like Temple Run, only not as good.

I'm thankful, at least, that The Legend of Korra gave me a chance to hear Iroh's benevolent voice whenever I purchased a health scroll or some other item to help give me a combat boost. (His spirit is to this game what Muramasa is to Ninja Gaiden.) On the other hand, I cringed whenever I accessed the equip screen so that I could assign each item to a d-pad direction. (Korra insists on reminding you, every time, that you have to equip items before you can use them. Eventually, I cried out loud, "I know that, silly girl; why do you think I'm on this screen?!") Nevertheless, Iroh was a great comfort in this three-hour disappointment. The Legend of Korra has none of the crackle and drama that make the setting so special, but at least Iroh triggered memories of the grand journeys Aang and Korra have taken, and provoked hope that we might yet one day see a game that deserves the license.

The Good

  • Bending looks cool
  • Pro-bending matches are reasonably fun

The Bad

  • Throwaway story fails the source material in every way
  • Repetitive boss fights
  • Lots of careless details sully the combat encounters
  • Uninspired runner segments

About the Author

Kevin has seen every episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender, every episode of The Legend of Korra that has aired as of this article, and even the awful Last Airbender film. He finished The Legend of Korra (the game, that is) in a single sitting, and has dabbled in the pro-bending mode and additional difficulty level that are unlocked once the story is complete.

I recall that there were some people who were upset to various degrees that vanOrd did not look kindly on this game.

These people are fools who are too forgiving of the so, so many lost opportunities to make this game better, and more respectful of its source material.

Having seen a playthrough of the game, this game does little more than set up flimsy scenarios to have Korra fighting the same types of fights over and over. There is nothing in the game which makes use of the IP's story-telling. Even the moments where Korra regains each bending ability are just inserted into some fights with generic masked goons (or a generic giant robot, or some other generic enemy(, with the drama (if it can be even called that) being little more than some lines uttered by a secondary character and Korra herself.

This game is just some shitty side project that PlatinumGames slapped together. Contrasting this with the far more sophisticated Bayonetta series, the lack of effort shows.

Nicklelodeon should not have given the video game license over to Activision.

I was hoping the game would expand on the story and at least reveal some tasty bits of lore to compensate for the tireless gameplay. I suppose I was wrong to hope for that much.

You aren't reading a novel here. We know the story line behind the game. All I wanted was a $15 bending game. I got that. It did what it was meant to do, hold me over until some other Avatar game comes out, with a real budget. You are seriously criticizing this for not having plot or depth or a world? Did you want a $15 open world 1,000 side quest Avatar game for your $15? You aren't going to get that, author. You must think your $15 is worth more than mine, because I wasn't expecting triple A action storytelling box office smash when I laid down the cash. As long as you are just gaming journalism and not grading the SATs or GRE essays, I suppose the world can live with this review.

You really expected a lot out of a $15 game, author. I'm sorry your $15 is apparently worth $60. Maybe that is the case in the video game journalism community, but for normal people we don't get our panties in a twist about the lack of depth in a $15 title. I dropped the cash for a quick bending game to hold me over until Nickelodeon eventually releases the real deal someday. I didn't expect triple A action storytelling from a game that cost less than what I have in change on hand, and frankly you shouldn'tve either.

well this was to be expected, I've yet to play ANY worthwile game with this license, granted there were only a few and this is the first Korra game. And mind you I'm a ridiculously big fan of the franchise so a game would be welcome, if they got it right that is...

@Jake518 I'm a massive fan of the series and I think this game deserves the score it got. It's horrible. The problem is, people think that the Avatar series is for kids, so they make stupid, simple games. I would love an open world Avatar game that actually follows the story, where you get stronger and learn new moves as you progress, but no, they make something like this :P

That all depends on what you think are kids. To me anyone under the age of 18 is a kid and in fact I consider most 20 year olds as kids as well, but that's irrelevant here. The avatar series was and is intended for kids, not 10 year olds, but 16 year olds. That is a fact. Also, when you spend time and money on games you're going to want to appeal to the majority of gamers out there which are... surprise surprise... children. True there are 30 year old gamers out there or even older like myself, but we don't want to play an avatar game even if we are paid to do it. (ok well maybe then I would) but you get the point.

I wanted to like this game, but it came out pretty disappointingly. Maybe I suck at action beat em ups, but I've never had a difficulty problem like I did in Legend of Korra than I ever did out of DMC 4 on Legendary Dark Knight mode. First off, I wanna say the game is fun in terms of combat. I love how seamlessly you can switch bending to form attack strings in a flashy as hell sequence and dish out awesome moves. What I dislike are the boss fights and the fashion in which you had to collect your bending. I mean, fucking really? I had to (Spoiler) sit through 4 fucking counter attacks, spam x, and find out that I did no damage to the giant robot to just gain earth bending? From which, I didn't even bother to use in the fight because simply counter attacking and using water bending did more damage? The game shouldn't have to make you go through such a chore to gain bending, ****, the game would have been far better if you started out with all the elements and just buy the combos.

And holy ****, the inconsistency with the platforming is insane. Sometimes I can grab a ledge and get up and sometimes I can't? Wai- FOR FUCKING REAL? Enemies spawn outside of your fucking vision and shoot you with ranged shit. Like... Really...? I'm dying so much because of bull shit like that, and it detracts from the game a lot.

It starts out all metrovania, giving you the fun shit to try out at the beginning and takes it all away. Honestly, I'm tired of that fucking formula and it shouldn't be in any game. If we're gonna start off with jack shit, then start off with jack shit, don't tease us because it just makes me all frustrated and into a big baby.

While I did complain a lot, I'd rank the game a solid 6. It's a fun game to kill time, but it's frustrating and sometimes a fucking chore to get through. I don't want to go through the game once to start enjoying it.

Action: Solid
Platforming: Get the **** out of the game, please
Temple Run Sequences: Really? Fucking really?

Store: Solid

Price: Fair

Score: 6/10 - Fun, but easily repetitive.

What I got from this review:

"I truly hate pure action games and want a naughty dog cinematic story telling."

Giving this game a 3 with the reasoning I read, in my opinion, is a good indication that you should consider allowing someone else to do your job.

The game is $15/£12. You can also tell how much money nickelodeon put into this game. You get what you pay for. I think you can blame the flow of the game on nickelodeon's writing. The game should have let you use all four elements right at the start. Just like devil may cry and bayonetta, the first play through is a massive tutorial. I don't think you can do a proper review until you are on a second play through.

.

The only time I have a problem with the camera is that one fight where you take on two giant spirit monster at a tiny space at the same time. Which brings me to my complain for the combat. The bosses have a lot of HP and the only way you can end the fight quickly is if you get in a lot of counter attack. There are more legit problem such as the balance between the four elements and the enemies. but of course Kevin here missed them all, I am not even sure that he beat the game.

It will be nice if there is another Korra game with bigger budget and more creative control from platinum.

Even the best reviews make mistakes (as every human does). Am currently playing the game, and this game is no 3.

Sorry but a game that has functional core mechanics (even if they are simplistic), that offers a story, minigames, collectible and progression system and plays better (performance wise) then 3/4 games made in the past 2 years is not a definition of 3.

Its no AAA game or something ground breaking (especially costing 15$ at release), but its a simple fun game for few h or a filler-game if you want.
This isn't a game that wants everyone who ever plays it , to play it for 50-60h replaying the stages for the best score (bayonetta/2) and i think that Kevin kinda misjudged what the game was trying to accomplish, and as such rated it the way he did.

If i would rate it by what the game is trying to accomplish it would be 7. If i would compare it to best of the best it would be 5. But hell no, a game that is functional, fun and even challenging on some difficulties should be 3.

P.S. Playing a PC version, and have no issues with bugs or delays on input.

I guess this makes the lowest rated Platinum game right? Regarless, user metascore seem pretty high, given it's only 15$ people didn't expect much already. I'll give it a try eventually, but the Steam sales draw near, so I'll have to stay my hand, lol.

Pro-bending matches? *reads on*...oh, that's not what I had in mind.

Really rare to see games even get scores this low anymore. Normally if a game is this bad the publication can tell from a mile off and won't even bother covering it. I'm just happy the lower end of the score scale is being used at all.

It's amazing (looking at those screens) that such low quality games can still look decent in stills these days. Back in PS2 days (when licensed trash was common) you could pick shovelware out of the lineup with a screenshot.

@nomailx If I were to judge ATLA by its first few episodes, in fact most of season 1 really, I would never watched it again and I would have seriously regretted later on. Its a big mistake to judge a series by only a few episodes.

Personally rating season of Korra so far, 8, 7, and 10 respectively. Season 3 was incredible. Much more character development, so much violence (decapitation, suffocation, electrocution are a few) and the ending isn't so cliche happy. Korra is broken towards the end because of what happened. Whats happened is explored further in season 4 and its looking to be just as good as 3 so far.

I don't think you can blame the problems with this game on the developers because the core mechanics are pretty solid. The combat is great, they did a good job of balancing the four different elements and make them distinct and useful. The problem is that you don't really get to enjoy the combat that much. The enemies are repetitive and the arenas are often too small. If they had just given the developers more resources to make more interesting enemies and better environments, the game would be much more fun.

Finished this game. This review I cant disagree with more, Sure it's no AAA titles, and its no game of the year material. But I also spent 15$ and didn't regret it at the end of it. For that alone it deserves a 5. Opinions are just that, but I really am sad by this review, because it will turn fans of the show away from enjoying this game for an easy price. In fact you would be surprised by the number of people who dont know the game is 15$. Please, if you a fan of the show it's worth the 15$, it's no Bayonetta 2, and its not gonna win Downloadable game of the year. But it deserves at least a 6.5, Also, I am considering Platinuming it, and have no qualms about playing it through again.
