The Technomancer Review

Get your butt to Mars. Maybe.

The studio Spiders has long been to Bioware what the SyFy Channel is to Hollywood: it takes a popular big-budget concept and creates an eager but far less grandiose adaptation. All of this remains true of its latest game, The Technomancer. It could be seen as a kind of prequel to an earlier Spiders game, Mars: War Logs. The Technomancer takes place on a colonized Mars, where corporations vie for control against a seedy, crime-filled background. Players take the role of one particular Technomancer--an elite agent with magic-like electricity-based powers--on a quest to discover the secrets of a grand conspiracy. The game is more Total Recall than Mass Effect, but is clearly inspired by Bioware RPGs and CD Projekt Red's Witcher games.

There is a lot to do in The Technomancer. There’s an in-depth crafting system wherein you can create new weapons, armor, and items, and then create modifications for each item to increase their power and usefulness. There are multiple fighting styles, each with its own skill tree, which allow for a wide selection of combat strategies. There’s a morality system, lots of missions, and an large variety of locations to explore. Indeed, everything--on paper, at least--points to an expansive, if not terribly original Western role-playing experience. There's a lot of activities at your fingertips, but options alone can't save The Technomancer. The problem is simple: the game does a lot of things all at once, just none of them particularly well.

Combat allows for a lot of variety, but pacing is haphazard. You have the option to switch between a staff, shield, and single-handed weapon, or the rogue-based dagger and gun. You can also unleash brilliant blue electrical hell on opponents. Unfortunately, in a game where fighting off multiple opponents at once is the norm, combat just never feels smooth or intuitive. Controls are jerky with almost no subtlety of motion, and overstepping targets happens far too often, leading to missed attacks and frustration. The concept of simply “knocking” enemies out after bashing, stabbing, and electrifying them is especially out of whack.

Unlike Spiders’ previous game, Bound by Flame, you can only play as a single male character. The game allows you to customize his look, but it feels like a cheap omission to not allow more variety in how you shape your Technomancer. Though you aren't technically alone on Mars you might as well be. Enemy AI is barebones, exhibiting some decent pathfinding, but enemies mostly just stand around mindlessly attacking. Sadly, ally AI is even worse. They seldom manage to take an enemy down on their own, even when given better gear. At best, they are useful for briefly distracting opponents when you get mobbed, but even then, it’s hit-and-miss.

Likewise, the game's presentation is all over the place. Some of the creature bosses look terrific. There are occasional impressive vistas and other sights to see, but close-ups of characters are strangely creepy and reminiscent of pre-Skyrim Elder Scrolls games.

No Caption Provided

Dialogue and voice acting are frequently awkward, characters are generally stiff in both appearance and behavior, and the morality system really comes down to whether you choose to outright kill defeated (human) opponents or knock them out; nobody bats an eye when you kill creatures and suck up their essence--which acts as a form of currency on Mars.

There’s a lot to nitpick about in The Technomancer, but the game also fills a specific niche. This is the B-list version of a big budget RPG. It’s almost inspiring how plucky Spiders is in its execution of The Technomancer. It's clearly trying to emulate the range of worlds and playstyles of games like The Witcher 3 and Dragon Age in a sci-fi setting, but isn't quite up to the task. It’s buggy, flawed, and, frankly, kind of cheap. This is absolutely a SyFy Channel-grade RPG, with all that implies. Is the Technomancer a good game? Maybe not, but it still manages to have a decided measure of charm anyway.

So I've completed the game, took me about 25 hours.

There are parts of the game that are pretty nice. Personally, I loved the combat. The dialogue between the master and the Technomancers is awesome as well. The way he introduces you to the world and the scarcity of life. The storyline and the whole premise of the world are interesting together with a few companions that hold well.

The main bad part is backtracking. You constantly need to return to the first city you start in, Ophir, where all the enemies are respawned. Man...

I think this game reminds me of one of my most favorite games of all time - LBA 2. The different stances, that backtracking to the same environments, something in the storytelling, maybe some Spiders employees are from Adeline? Both are (were) French studios.

Worth the few bucks it costs now.

Well I was excited to play this game....then my excitement slowly died the longer I played. The combat was really frustrating, you could be surrounded from all sides and your companions still wouldn't help. Sometimes when I get to a certain areas the game would get really glitchy and that made the combat even worse.

On a positive note, I really liked the story though and Andrew....I loved Andrew. I played till the end just for those 2 reasons.

I suppose that there are some people who see B-list games as some kind of underdog.

Yet, I see B-list games as trying to be AAA-shit - and I don't like AAA-shit for what they do. If B-listers can't even completely do what the AAA's do, I don't think that the B-listers deserve any praise.

As for this game, I was watching GiantBomb's Quick Look - my regard for the game sank when I saw the party management mechanism, specifically how available party members appear to just run over to the player character upon joining the party and how they stand on one side of the room in their default poses. They look so crude. As another example, the player character merely sits down on a bed as part of the "resting" animation before the typical fade-to-black.

I am not one for 'gwafix' and shit, but I am turned off by half-assed presentation.

I've played and enjoyed a ton of indie RPGs over the years, so I'll probably give this one a shot when it goes on sale.

Mars & desert games aren't usually my preferred settings (sand, sand, more sand, red sand, some caves with sand, buildings in sand, etc.), but hopefully there's variation.

Wow this review sounds really rushed.

I would recommend a sci-fi and RPG fan to not pay that much attention to the negatives pointed out. If you understand that this is not a AAA RPG and should not be treated as such, you can have a ton of fun with this game. You also hear the outcome of your actions throughout the game, you have companion missions and can have relationships with the companions. Such things not being mentioned in the review makes me wonder if the game was finished before reviewing. At least it didn't complain about the 'difficulty' like so many other reviews did.

Also another thing to point out is that the game isn't really a prequel, it's set around the same time as Mars: War Logs.

@Etagloc: Spider is the definition of average. I usually like their stories. but everything is so mundane. Somehow, they're less than the sum of it's parts.

Still, I love their games.

This one of those odd situations where I agree with everything the reviewer mentioned but don't agree with the final score, for whatever that's worth. Is it a little clunky? Yes. Is the voice acting as bad as the acting in any respectable B-movie? You, betchya! Does the story have more holes in it than fine Swiss cheese? Check! And yet, I keep coming back to it and think about all the goofy characters in the game even when I'm not playing it. It has that awkward first-season-of-star-trek-TnG charm to it. It's rough and clunky but also imaginative and oddly original while fostering this sense of attachment to it's characters.

I hope that one day Spiders releases a polished "The Technomancer: Enhanced Edition" with completely redone voice acting and facial animations plus gameplay refinements like the first Witcher game. Please, Spiders! If you read this, please release an enhanced edition for this game one day! Give it a little more love. This game deserves it.

@shadowhunter112: Gamespot are great with quick reviews, but when it comes to certain games like this one it can be misleading with their scoring system.

I highly recommend you check out ACG (Angry Centaur Gaming) on youtube if you want a more refined and in depth review of any game. He reviewed this game as well :)

Something to fill the long gap between AAA western RPG releases. I'm playing it and enjoying it. Given that the other option is to go back to favorites I've already played from the early 2000s, the graphics fit nicely enough, and once you learn the games systems you can get a really good rhythm going with the combat and utterly dominate. Unless you're absolutely intolerant of things that are unintuitive, it's worth a try.

"Get your butt to Mars. Maybe." Spiders RPG:s seem like big maybes, but I think both Mars: War Logs and Technomancer might be better than what the critics are saying. Whether they are good enough is another question.

6 is a fair score. I for one found the combat system to be fine, if a bit dull after a while, using the staff. You can dodge out of pretty much any attack so if you get hit it's your own fault. So with the staff you just attack, dodge, and if the enemy gets cheeky and starts to dodge you kick to stun them and get some hits in. If you see videos like WTF is The Technomancer they just suck at the game, spam attacks and don't dodge, and don't take the time to learn and recognize enemy behavior (surprise! enemies charging towards you are probably about to attack so you should dodge).

I'm playing it and doing a playthrough on youtube, and while it's true, the analogy is perfect. It's like a B-list movie. And as such, it will not please everyone, far from that. But for those able to lower their standards and understand they don't have the production values big studios have, the game does have it's own charm.

I can remember a ton of B-list movies that are obviously flawed, with poor acting, terrible special effects, and still massively fun to watch.

We sometimes underestimate the value of originality and novelty alone. And Technomancer is more than just that. I'm actually enjoying it. Can't say the faults pointed don't exist, but.. I'm still playing it and enjoying it.
IMO, it mostly lacks polishing. With the right time invested in polishing this game, it could easily be an 8.

TLDH

Flawed, lacking polish, lack of production values, but... still awkwardly fun and enjoyable. Story cliched but still interesting.

@TigusVidiks: The catch here is that the game has an asking price of US$45. That's a lot for a game with this kind of quality.

@aiat_gamer: I would say here that I do not consider US$60 to be a good price for a AAA.

I've heard some people say the game is pretty good despite it receiving low ratings. I'll probably pick it up on sale.

@Blackened_Halo: B games are a dying thing. It's nice to see there's still middle ground between AAA & indie.

This looks way too janky for me though. I don't think I could put up with the loose movement, unintuitive combat & uncanny valley facial animations.
