The Witcher 3 Nintendo Switch Review - The Last Wish

  • First Released May 18, 2015
    released
  • NS

Despite taking a technical and visual hit, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is still one of the best games in recent years on Nintendo Switch.

The dichotomy of beauty and violence has always been a driving theme in The Witcher series. The Northern Realms' gorgeous vistas are dotted with war-torn battlefields, kindness--no matter how fleeting it may be--is often juxtaposed with savagery, and even the warmest characters have a cold and calculated side to them. That neverending tug-of-war is ever-present in The Witcher 3, even when its stripped-down visuals may obscure some of that beauty.

Everything is here in the Nintendo Switch version--The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, its two expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, and all of its DLC. The main game alone offers dozens of superb quests filled with interesting characters, fantastic twists, and rewarding combat encounters. As Kevin VanOrd said in GameSpot's original review, "Excellence abounds at every turn in this open-world role-playing game." The same is mostly true for the Nintendo Switch version.

Now Playing: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition For Switch Video Review

As you'd expect, the visuals have been pared down significantly. The textures are muddied, the draw-distances are reined in, and the resolution has taken a hit. These issues are exacerbated during docked play. While it technically runs at a higher frame rate and resolution docked, these visual issues are all the more noticeable when projected onto a larger screen.

The standard Nintendo Switch's 6.2-inch screen does a great job of hiding the blemishes. Even though it's running at a lower resolution, the smaller screen gives it a much crisper look, so the poor textures and pop-in are less apparent. If you do plan on playing it in handheld mode, you can, thankfully, adjust the size of the HUD to make things easier to read.

C'mon, this is what you're really here for
C'mon, this is what you're really here for

For returning players, the visual downgrade may require some getting used to. However, focusing solely on The Witcher 3's visuals does this port a disservice. Four years later, the game is still massive in scope, and seeing the battle-scarred swamps of Velen, jagged peaks of Skellige, and sprawling countryside of Toussaint on a technically inferior platform is still a sight to behold.

More importantly, the grittier look of the Switch port doesn't affect The Witcher 3's core gameplay. The combat and exploration may be smoother on a PC, Xbox One X, or PS4 Pro, but I found performance to be consistent throughout a wide variety of combat encounters and locales. After nearly 30 hours, I haven't experienced any significant frame rate dips. Even the swamps in Velen--an area notorious for causing frame rate issues on PS4 and Xbox One--are comparable to the rest of the experience on Switch. According to developer CD Projekt Red, the frame rate should range between 24 and 30 frames per second. In populated areas like Novigrad, the frame rate dipped to the lower end of that range. Given the slower pace of The Witcher 3, I never found these dips to be an issue, even in the heat of combat.

The Witcher 3's visual prowess may have been a selling point for some in 2015, but the Nintendo Switch version is a reminder that there is far more to this adventure than a pretty picture. Even today, there are few games that can rival the storytelling and worldbuilding on display here. Nothing is as simple as it seems, and every thread you pull on reveals enticing new details about this world and its characters.

The Nintendo Switch version is a reminder that there is far more to this adventure than a pretty picture

The vast web of decisions and consequences is just as impressive as it was in 2015. While it may not be apparent on your first playthrough, your actions--both big and small--can have serious repercussions, even if you were trying to do the right thing. What's more impressive is how well fleshed-out each of these paths are and how they ebb and flow through main quests and side quests. While many outcomes are bittersweet by design, none feel underdeveloped.

Where The Witcher 3 continues to shine is in its many deeply human stories. While the political aspects of the main story give context to the world and the characters that inhabit it, it's the interactions Geralt has with its denizens that gives weight to the experience. There are no good guys or bad guys. There are just people fighting to find hope in an oppressive world. Many of the quests provoke questions like: Would you hurt others for those you love? Can even the most vile of men be forgiven? How far can fear drive someone?

The superb storytelling continues in the game's two expansions. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. While not necessary to the main narrative, these two expansions are thoughtful addendums to Geralt's story. Blood and Wine in particular is a heartfelt send-off for the storied series. If you're jumping back into the game and just want to experience these, you can skip to them right when you load it up for the first time.

Although the Nintendo Switch might not be the best platform to play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, it's still a fantastic experience that shouldn't be missed. If you are looking to replay The Witcher 3 and bask in its detail and beauty, the Switch port may not quite scratch that itch. However, what makes this game excellent isn't its graphics, but the powerful stories it tells, and those are as vivid as ever on Switch.

The Good

  • It's the same excellent game it's always been, plus its two expansions and all the DLC
  • Fantastic branching narrative, ripe with with personal moments that give weight to the experience
  • Nearly every quest and interaction feels meaningful
  • Handheld mode offers a novel way to experience the game, and you can adjust the HUD size to boot

The Bad

  • Visual downgrade can be off-putting, especially while docked

@ccgod: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_HATX3tVLc Watch this video and tell me if it looks like a wii game. A simple turning off TAA and turning on sharpening makes the game look way better.

@chansaet: It doesn't look like a wii game. But it sure as hell doesn't look like the xbox one x / PC version. In docked mode on a big tv screen I would avoid this port like the plague. In handheld mode the graphics are acceptable.

@chansaet: Looks like the porting devs were braindead to go the route they chose as default. Hopefully non-modded users will eventually get these options.

The game still have massive pop-in even at close range, but it's better looking overall.

@Ph00p: It boogles my mind why they choose the settings they choose. It's so blurry docked mode. We need to email them right now and tell them we want some of these settings in the menu. Turning off TAA seems to make the biggest difference. It seems like a very simple patch would add make the game way more playable especially in docked mode.

The game looks like you've coated your Switch/TV with a layer of thick Vaseline with it's murky graphics, and apparently it dips really low in parts.

I'm not sure what reviewers and even Digital Foundry are getting out of lying about how "AMAZING" this version is. It's really bad looking in person, it's really not good feeling to play.

So many games get tossed under the bus for visual fidelity and bad framerate.

@Ph00p: The simple fact of the matter is that this is a port of a 4-year old game, there is NO excuse for it to be inferior in any way to the original version.

@Ph00p: Not CD Projekt though! CD Projekt has built up enough good reputation to get some people to turn the other cheek or be more forgiving despite it having made what is technically a downgrade.

Also, don't you remember the "for a Wii game" years on GameSpot? Somehow games on the Wii game get a free pass for having mud for graphics because the hardware is just shit compared to its peers?

Expect this to happen all over again. "For a Switch game". *Egh*.

@Gelugon_baat: Fuuuu... I had forgotten "For a Wii game" non-sense, but I'm sick of Nintendo getting an infinite freepass on technical shortcomings because they cheap out on R&D in the power department of their consoles.

I honestly was hoping that the newest Nintendo console would sink Nintendo so that we could see them become a huge 3rd party game maker and we'd finally see Zelda and Mario on platforms that have the right amount of power, but I don't think that's happening any time soon.

@Ph00p: I feel you mate. I'm also tired of Nintendo's hardware policies. To be this good at developing games and to be this bad at creating hardware. Yeah, I get what some users here are telling us all the time: "The Switch is portable and all", but we still need a much more powerful console. Nothing is going to change, however, because the Switch is selling like hotcakes.

Turning off TAA and turning on sharpening makes the game look way better on the switch. We need to spread this right now. A secret menu was found on the switch version. Right now you need a hacked switch to access it. We all need to e-mail CD Project red and allow us to do this. This would be a very simple patch for CD Project Red to do.

@pmanden: PC is the best way to play this though. I have it on Xbox one X And PC and there is no comparison. Just the fluidity of movement on PC is astounding it just makes you want to experience it. I was fairly impressed with Xbox one X version all the same but it still doesn't look or perform quite right.

I agree with those saying a 9 is too high considering the graphics. It’s a definitive downgrade, and graphics are important to take into account. IGNs review was better in this regard. We all know it’s a great game, but what we really want to know is how it plays on the switch.

@monkyby87:

100% this. IMO Graphics and writing/ story presentation arguably more than gameplay helped make this particular game's first Impression/debut release what It was. I personally don't want to see The Witcher 3 with any less that what I already had to settle for In that area given the Initial visual downgrade from the first E3 demos. World Immersion was more Important than combat for my Witcher experience , even If slightly.

The one complaint many people did have with TW3 was the limited / repetitive combat animations yet universally noted the masterful fidelity and *graphical* world Immersion along with It's dialogue and character lore. A downgrade In this area for this game Is significant to the original experience IF those feelings were also true for you. In this case It arguably deserves far harsher than docking 1 point because they managed to fit It on Inferior hardware.

With enough compromise anybody can pull of the same feat but that dosen't mean It retains enough key aspects or that magical suspension of disbelief that people primarily fell In love with It for In the first place. It's a fine line when porting an originally great experience down that already struggled to get It's ambitious vision cohesively on PS4/Xbox One. Some features just can't be too reduced , and sometimes that feature Is graphics. I'd give a 8.0 honestly that's fair , still a great game with the amount of content and value you get.

Yes the game has the same good story, but I don't see how it gets a 9 considering the massive visual downgrade compared to other platforms...

Sorry but this review (the score) is biased.
There are enough reviews in the past where the technically inferior versions of the same game got lower scores (X360-PS3-WiiU,XboxOne-PS4).
Gamespots reviews should keep a standard no matter of the reviewers personal preferences of a console.
It shouldnt matter if the actual version for the Switch is impressive considering the technical abilities of the console...the lower res, framerate, draw distance...this game is much more fun on other devices

@sladakrobot: Absolutely. Kudos to CD Projekt for being able to port this game to such inferior hardware, but the 9 is ridiculous. If they ported the Witcher to the Wii or Gamecube, it would also be an amazing feat, but still a vastly inferior game.

@pmanden: It's a 6 or 7 on any other platform if it performed this badly. It just gets this because of Switch wokeness or Nintendo fanboyism take your pic.

I have a Switch too but after you play games such as Astral Chain and Daemon Ex Machina Witcher 3 performing like it does is a disgrace.

Now they give out 9's to games that run at 24 fps with less than PC low settings.

No mention of the massive downgrade in sound quality to fit into the 32GB limit either or the next to zero texture filtering.

CDPR is an amazing studio but they shouldn't get a free pass for releasing games on systems clearly too underpowered to the do the game justice.

Even the opportunity to transfer saves to PC to play it properly is not utilised.

@so_hai: It's better for gamers that CDPR sell their games on more platforms than JUST GoG. Can you imagine the *****ing if Cyberpunk was GoG exclusive?

Plus, they there's no DRM outside of whatever comes with the platform itself; CDPR can't really control that if they want to sell their games in more than one digital store.

@so_hai: They don’t. If you want CDPR games with absolutely zero DRM, buy on GoG. If you want them on the most popular launcher, buy on Steam.

CDPR doesn’t need to limit themselves to one or the other.
