Thor: Love And Thunder Review -- Style Over Substance

Thor 4 is headed to theaters with Taika Waititi back as writer and director, but how does this one compare to Ragnarok?

Thor: Love and Thunder is, technically, the fourth installment of the Thor franchise within the MCU--making him the first, and only, core Avenger to have broken the solo trilogy barrier--and let's be honest Thor 4 is pretty fun to say. It would perhaps be more accurate to call it Thor Ragnarok 2, however, given the return of writer/director Taika Waititi in addition to the cast, continuing his work of course correcting the God of Thunder in both tone and aesthetic. Gone is the Shakespearan fantasy drama, here to stay is the '80s neons, dad rock, and slapstick comedy.

Love and Thunder sees Thor (Chris Hemsworth) in his post-Endgame reality, having left Earth and New Asgard in favor of teaming up with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Naturally, things don't go smoothly for any of them--and after some time (done in montage, of course) spent galavanting around the cosmos with the Guardians, Thor is forced to break off from the team and deal with a new threat facing god-kind. Gorr, the God Butcher (Christian Bale), an alien with a specific vendetta against any and all deities, has been roaming from planet to planet, killing every god he can find--and this includes Earth, where the Asgardians have settled after their own world was destroyed. These events set in motion a journey for Thor which reunites him with his old flame, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), the new King of Asgard, Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), and a handful of other familiar faces along the way.

The good news is that Ragnarok's tone and look is still completely intact here. Waititi's distinctive directorial style has not been washed out or papered over--if anything, it is even louder and more bombastic than it was before. The musical stingers (of which there are many) are nostalgic and campy, the jokes (there are lots) are almost all very funny, and the fight scenes hopscotch between looking like something you'd see airbrushed on the side of a van to stylish and extremely well choreographed. The visual effects, too, work extremely well. Unlike most of the MCU's Phase 4 offerings, Love and Thunder never suffers from cheap looking VFXs or obviously rushed green-screen interactions. The movie looks great from start to finish, and even works in some of the most visually striking moments the MCU has seen in quite some time.

One character also benefits from Waitit's treatment this time around. Jane, who has been absent from the MCU spotlight since Thor: The Dark World, instantly becomes a more fully drawn participant in the story and Portman's performance here easily outpaces her work in the first two films. This is the Jane Foster we should have had from the start. She also gets some of the movie's best gags and has the obvious frontrunner in terms of a fully realized character arc.

Unfortunately, while those positives are all great in and of themselves, they exist within one of the MCU's weakest and most nonsensical stories overall. The set dressing and the players are all here, and doing their jobs well (extremely well, even, in some cases), but the actual sequence of events they're moving through is baffling to say the least. The conflict--and by extension, Gorr's entire existence--actively falls apart as it unfolds. Multiple times, characters are sent off on 10 to 20 minute time-sinks that circle aimlessly around random set pieces and MacGuffins that ultimately go nowhere. The MCU is certainly no stranger to logic problems forcing stories to fall apart under scrutiny after the fact, but Love and Thunder's plot never even manages to get itself off the ground before it starts to unravel.

And speaking of Gorr--while Bale certainly does get a handful of very cool-looking fight scenes and powers, he also seems to oscillate randomly between Pennywise-like cartoon character and two-bit villain. His schemes never materialize into anything meaningful and any and all opportunities to engage with the bigger themes his character presents--the idea that all gods are selfish and faith in higher powers is meaningless--are flat out ignored in favor of baffling last minute decisions and random nonsense monologues. The end result is just another incredibly forgettable MCU bad guy, which is disappointing to say the least.

This problem persists not just in Gorr, but in Thor and Valkyrie as well. There's a running gag with Stormbreaker being "jealous" that Thor wants Mjolnir back--it never materializes into anything, despite Stormbreaker remaining important at multiple junctures in various overlapping schemes. Another extended sequence sees the team petitioning Zeus (Russel Crowe) for help, only to be met with a handful of jokes and baffling exposition that results in yet another weapon being put into play. But this weapon doesn't actually do or mean anything, unlike Stormbreaker, and it's never made clear why it was needed in the first place, other than to give an excuse for Crowe to do a funny accent for a while.

The end result of these non sequiturs and disparate ideas makes Love and Thunder feel less like a movie and more like a scrapbook of random ideas, cut up in between some neat looking music videos. Some of those ideas are great--Jane, the humor, the visuals--while others are lackluster and meaningless. It just never really comes together into a cohesive thing, which ultimately makes the whole experience ring hollow at best and confusing at worst. But, hey, at least it's not The Dark World.

The Good

  • Natalie Portman's return to Jane Foster
  • Consistently well done VFXs
  • Playful humor almost always lands
  • Well done, interesting fight scenes

The Bad

  • Weak plot that falls apart as it unfolds
  • Confusing side quests and subplots meander aimlessly
  • Gorr swings wildly between horror movie monster and two bit villain
  • Random MacGuffins and set pieces eat up time but add nothing

The epitome of Mid

Phase 4 outside of Shang-Chi and No Way Home had been extra Mid.

It's the Batman & Robin of the MCU. I didn't hate it, but it would have been just as good as handful of 5-to-10-minute YouTube videos of the characters goofing around, because that's what the bulk of the movie really was.

Anybody looking for the next chapter in whatever Phase the MCU is in right now will be very disappointed, because absolutely nothing anybody could take seriously happens in Love & Thunder. But if you just want to watch two hours of stupid, no stakes goofs, this is the film for you.

It was a really fun movie. Enjoyed it quite a bit.

Not as good as Ragnarok, nor as good as Multiverse of Madness or No Way Home, but still a great time. I've thoroughly enjoyed a lot MCU's recent projects

It’s been billed as a rom com super hero’s film, how’s that going to have a deep substance. I think the reviewer has wanted Logan, this will just be a fun mindless superhero film, that’s what I’ll be expecting and I’ll enjoy it

"Style over substance". Describes every superhero movie with the exception of maybe Iron Man 1, Logan, Deadpool (Thou this is more of a parody than a movie), Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Maybe Man of Steel.

Did anyone watch the trailer, saw Thor's clothes flicked off, watch the girls doing exactly what they say they hate when men do it and thought... Hmmmm Maybe Love and Thunder is going to make a political statement about double standards?

Watching a superhero movie expecting it to be anything other than mindless fun is the equivalent of comparing Dominic Toretto's family rambling with Shakespeare's Twelfth Night play.

"Style over substance" is kinda how I felt about Ragnarok. I started out liking it but by the end of the movie I was kinda done with the gag a minute approach. Subsequent viewings weren't nearly as fun either. I'll probably wait for home release.

He's been comic relief, goofy Thor for too long now. I miss when they made Marvel movies like Iron Man.

@rolento25: Have you watched the trailers? Read other reviews? I don't think Downey is the problem here. Pretty much every review I've read say it's a major step backward from Ragnarok but at least it looks pretty.

@bdrtfm: You have mixed reviews. It ios fun? Yes. Maybe too fun? At times yes. Still... a much more slow burn? Yep. (which is not what the trailers show)

Some people loved it, some people enjoy it, some people think is meh and some people didnt like. There is not a definitive direction.

@blindbsnake: I never said there was a definitive direction. All I said was that the reviews I've read said it's a step backwards from Ragnarok but looks good. No matter how bad or how good a film is, there will always be people who love it, people who hate it and people who think its OK. Saying it has mixed reviews is like saying it's a movie. No sh**. Very few movies get rave reviews across the board - like maybe 1 in 10 million. It is, however, pretty common to get crap reviews across the board because there will always be people making films like "Finding Jesus" which is actually not about Jesus but a bad ripoff of "Finding Nemo".

@bdrtfm: Obviously, in the end you will have mixed opinions in every movie, game and so on. But you can easily find a flow direction in many of those movies, even when people enjoy something they can bring an honest opinion to the table.

What I'm saying is that you have many reviews and there is no flow. You can easily find someone who loves this movie and someone who hates it.

Sadly... Nowadays, a bad review sells better for the person providing the review.

After watching this one, the next Thor movie NEEDS to be the last one. I'd agree with the 6/10 as well.

I found the director annoying on one of the late nigh talk shows, but I did like the first Ragnarok as a popcorn movie. I'll probably see it eventually, but certainly not in the theater.

Eh. Sounds fun enough. I'm sure I'll end up taking the nieces (and their Chris Hemsworth-loving mother who will reluctantly tag along I'm sure).

I, for one, didn't mind Dark World. It's certainly #3 for me among the Thor movies, but that doesn't mean it didn't have some good moments.

I will say, MCU in Phase 4 is becoming a bit hit or miss. While everything revolved around the buildup to the Thanos confrontation for so long, it now seems there is little direction. And during Phases 1-3 they did a remarkable job of maintaining a consistent thread and kept nudging the story along through all 20+ movies (some being better than others).

Among the recent movies, I loved No Way Home. Legend of 10 rings and Dr. Strange were above average. Eternals didn't do much for me.

Series have also been inconsistent. Couldn't really get into WandaVision (although I give them credit for doing something different). Falcon & Winter Soldier was pretty good. Didn't like Loki (I'm time-traveled out). Moonknight just didn't have much Moonknight in it (while liking all the Egyptian mythology). I think I'm in the minority, but I thought Hawkeye was great. Dynamic between Hawkeye and Kate Bishop was fun. And Kate and Yelena were a ton of fun together (wouldn't mind seeing them spin-off into own series). Plus it was set at Christmas, and I'm always a sucker for that.

I completely agree with Phase 4 being very inconsistent. No Way Home was probably my favorite MCU movie and the Dr Strange was bottom of the barrel. Never bothered with the Eternals since it seems like an offshoot same with all the TV shows. I did watch Wandavision which(typed witch like 3 times lol) was actually really good. Overall it feels like there is no plan except to make A LOT more content.

MCU was good because there was a plan and stories fit together. If they abandon that I suspect they will lose a lot of their audience.

@jazzycmk: same time i completely understand and appreciate they didnt immediately try to replace thanos with another big bad that connects everyone. breather is good. but yea none of these phase 4 movies really warrant their existence. even the dark world is way more important than these movies. well no way home is cool "finale" that connects the millenial marvel movies. although i think even it retroactively ruins the mcguire and garfield movies if you consider no way home canon.

at this point i just hope they continue to do cool cameos and treat mcu as "whos who in 2000s movie industry". getting gibson, arnold, hanks, aniston, sandler, meriweather, cruise, murphy etc to appear would be cool. also still holding out hope that nicholson could be featured at least for a few seconds. if they lose the surprise stars like bale crowe then the series is out of steam

Starting to get Comic Book//Superhero movie fatigue. Seems like there's one or two out every month. Great for those who can't get enough of them but I have a hard time convincing myself to watch them anymore. Haven't seen Aquaman, the latest Dr. Strange, Morbius, Venom, Eternals, Shang-Chi etc. The last good one I watched was The Joker and it didn't even have a superhero in it.

Even if there isn't a movie each month, the fatigue is so real making it feel as such. Even still, looking at what is coming down the pipeline doesn't help the feeling subside.

It's shameful when you know who the "critic" was simply by seeing the score.

"The end result of these non sequiturs and disparate ideas makes Love and Thunder feel less like a movie and more like a scrapbook of random ideas, cut up in between some neat looking music videos."

Interesting take, as it perfectly describes the show The Umbrella Academy, which Spoilerspot heaps praise upon.
