Tomb Raider Review

  • First Released Mar 4, 2013
    released
  • PC

Tomb Raider is an exhilarating action adventure that serves as a terrific origin story for the iconic Lara Croft.

When adventurer extraordinaire Lara Croft raided her first tomb back in 1996, she brought with her an exhilarating feeling of isolation and discovery. Over the years, Lara has continued to venture into parts unknown, taking dark turns and frequently tangling with the supernatural as the series evolved alongside the burgeoning third-person action adventure genre. The gameplay of this series reboot takes a few cues from a current titan of the genre--Nathan Drake and the Uncharted series--but don't let that familiarity put you off. This origin story is a terrific adventure that balances moments of quiet exploration with plenty of rip-roaring action to keep you enthralled from start to finish.

As Tomb Raider begins, Lara is more an academic than an adventurer. But when she's shipwrecked on an island full of ancient secrets and deadly cultists, she has little choice but to learn how to survive. Lara endures a great deal of punishment early in the game, and though no small amount of that anguish is physical, it's an unpleasant moment in which a man tries to force himself on her that's most harrowing. But as unpleasant as it is, it marks an important turning point in Lara's understanding of just how hard she has to fight to survive. Rather than crumbling under the weight of her physical and emotional struggles, she emerges from them a stronger person.

Now Playing: Tomb Raider - Video Review

It's empowering to witness Lara's journey from the understandably fearful individual she is when she first arrives on the island to the justifiably confident survivor she becomes. Later in the game, when she has proven to the resident cultists that she's not the easily cowed person they mistook her for, she turns the psychological tables on them, letting loose battle cries to strike fear into their hearts. Aspects of the story that fall outside of Lara's character arc aren't as strong; there's a twist of sorts that occurs late in the game that you see coming hours ahead of time, for instance, and the central villain offers little in the way of nuance. But as an introduction to the legendary Lara Croft, Tomb Raider's tale is a success; she emerges as a strong, charismatic and human figure, and you're left eager to see what the future holds for her.

You'd better get used to killing fast, Lara. You're gonna be doing a lot of it.
You'd better get used to killing fast, Lara. You're gonna be doing a lot of it.

Lara's origin story deserves an extraordinary setting, and the island where Tomb Raider takes place does not disappoint. Centuries ago, it was home to a kingdom called Yamatai. Many shrines, temples, statues and other remnants of that history remain, and often, you just want to take in these places, slowly advancing through the darkness, eager to discover what's just outside the light of your torch. The island is a beautiful place, but not every discovery is a pleasant one; Yamatai's dark history is vividly communicated in piles of bones and far more grisly things. On the PC, the lovely sights are even lovelier and the horrifying sights are more horrifying than on consoles. The PC port was handled by Nixxes, and just as their PC release of Sleeping Dogs improved significantly on the visuals of the console versions, the sharp textures in Tomb Raider's PC release make it the definitive way to experience this game.

The ancient structures of Yamatai now coexist alongside bunkers built during World War II, the wreckage of planes brought down by the storms that surround the island, and the shantytowns and makeshift machinery of the island's current inhabitants. It's a fascinating hodgepodge of the beautiful and the utilitarian; the buildings are believably nestled in their rough natural surroundings, and appear appropriately weathered, damaged, and rusty. The island really feels like a place where people have lived and where great and terrible things have happened. It's a place with many facets; it has claustrophobic caverns and breathtaking vistas, and phenomena like gentle snowfalls, torrential downpours, and fierce, howling winds make it alternately seem like a tranquil place, and a brutal one.

You can enable TressFX if you want to see Lara's hair behave in mysterious ways.
You can enable TressFX if you want to see Lara's hair behave in mysterious ways.

It's immediately clear that one thing the island is not is safe, so it's a good thing that Lara soon gets her hands on a bow. You acquaint yourself with using it by hunting animals; Lara doesn't have hunger levels you need to manage or any such thing, but the deer, rabbits, crabs and other creatures that call the island home make it feel much more alive. For reasons of their own, the cult that currently occupies the island doesn't exactly welcome you with open arms, so it's not long before you need to turn that bow (and, soon, a pistol, rifle, and shotgun) on humans. Combat is varied and suspenseful; some situations give you the opportunity to take a stealthy approach, sneaking up behind enemies to perform silent kills, or firing arrows into walls to distract them and picking them off from a distance with well-aimed arrows while their comrades aren't looking. During one particularly tense battle in a fog-shrouded forest, patrolling foes hunt you with flashlights; if you can manage to stay unseen, you can shift from prey to predator, using their cones of light to pinpoint their positions and eliminating them one by one.

Then, there are the all-out firefights. When your presence is known, enemies are smart and aggressive about flushing you out from cover with grenades and Molotovs, which forces you to keep moving and act boldly. Many enemies attack from a distance while others get in close, so you need to be constantly on your toes, switching between your weapons on the fly and evading foes who attack with melee weapons. Dodging and countering melee attacks is easy, but the savage animations of Lara's counters make eliminating those foes who make the mistake of getting too close to you consistently satisfying.

Lara eventually finds powerful new tools like a grenade launcher and fire arrows, and uses the salvage she constantly collects to improve her weapons, so combat offers more flexibility and becomes more intense as you progress through the game. Throughout it all, great sound design drives home the impact of your actions; delivering a shotgun blast into the face of a nearby enemy is made all the more powerful by the resounding report the gun lets loose, and the conversations you overhear between cultists create a feeling that they're not just enemies who spawn into the environment to hinder you, but are people with histories on the island and tasks to accomplish.

As great as the combat is, it's the quieter moments in Tomb Raider that are most affecting. The simple act of moving, of shimmying along ridges and climbing up craggy rock walls, is a pleasure, thanks to the excellent controls and the fantastic environments. Once in a while, Lara appears to get a bit of divine assistance and float through the air to successfully land a jump you botched the timing on, but with these rare exceptions aside, the controls let you experience a wonderfully physical and agile relationship with your surroundings.

Lara's been making desperate leaps and grabbing on to faraway ledges since her earliest game, but it's never felt quite as good as it does here. And just as Lara acquires new weapons over the course of the game, she also gets her hands on gear that makes her more a more versatile adventurer. Particularly nifty are the rope arrows and rope ascender, the former of which enables you to create rope bridges to certain areas (among other things), and the latter of which lets you rapidly zip up ropes from a lower position. This gear gives you more freedom, and makes Lara seem like a progressively more capable and confident explorer. Naturally, the PC version lets you guide Lara around using either an Xbox 360 controller or the mouse and keyboard. Whether you prefer the more immediate sense of connection to Lara's leaping and climbing afforded by the controller or the more precise aiming the mouse provides, you can't go wrong with either option.

The outstanding visuals of the PC version make it even easier to get invested in Lara's journey.
The outstanding visuals of the PC version make it even easier to get invested in Lara's journey.

The game is at its best when you're fully in control, when you feel directly connected to Lara as she runs and leaps and clambers. But when the game does take some of that control away from you, it usually does so with skill and assurance. A number of semi-interactive scripted moments require less from you as a player, moments when the building Lara is standing on starts to crumble in spectacular fashion, or when she's being swept down a perilous river. What these sequences lack in interactivity, they make up for in spectacle. There are a few missteps; the quick-time-event-focused final confrontation ends the game on a slightly underwhelming note, for instance. But for the most part, these moments bring Tomb Raider a lot of cinematic thrills. When it comes to jaw-dropping setpieces, Lara's adventure rivals those of Indiana Jones and Nathan Drake.

Lara is still an explorer at heart, and although there aren't vast open spaces to frolic in on the island, there are plenty of reasons to look around and venture off the beaten path. There are relics to find that offer clues to the island's history and journals that lend some insight into the experiences of the island's residents, past and present. Best of all are the numerous optional tombs you might happen upon during your journey. These chambers always consist of an environmental puzzle that you must solve, and these are generally just challenging enough to make you stop and think for a moment, but never drag down the pace of your adventure. Completing tombs earns you experience and sometimes parts you can use to improve your weapons, as well as maps that reveal the locations of the collectibles scattered around that part of the island. These tombs also function as character building through gameplay; as you guide Lara through these challenges to the rewards that await, it's easy to understand how she develops a taste for the tomb raiding and treasure hunting that will shape her future.

Tomb Raider's multiplayer functions just fine, but it's nothing special.
Tomb Raider's multiplayer functions just fine, but it's nothing special.

In addition to the excellent campaign, there's an enjoyable but unremarkable competitive multiplayer component. There are four modes, all of which are pretty typical: a team deathmatch and a free for all, as well as two modes in which teams score points by completing basic objectives. It feels great to land a headshot on another player with a bow from across a map, or to activate a snare trap and then see another player heedlessly walk into it. But for the most part, it's standard fare, with the sorts of unlockable weapon upgrades and perks that are now par for the course.

But no matter; the single-player campaign here is the main attraction, and it is excellent. It doesn't try to rewrite the book on third-person action adventure games. But with its excellent controls, engaging heroine, thrilling combat, and fascinating setting, it doesn't need to. Lara may be covering some previously charted territory here, but Tomb Raider is so well-crafted, you won't mind at all.

The Good

  • Story believably builds Lara up from unsure academic to confident adventurer
  • Fascinating setting with a rich sense of history
  • Intense combat that offers a good deal of flexibility
  • Controls make physically overcoming the island's terrain a pleasure
  • Good assortment of tombs to raid, relics to collect, and puzzles to solve

The Bad

  • Forgettable multiplayer component
  • Outside of Lara's character arc, story is predictable

I just played through this game, never been a fan of tomb raider but i thought id give it a shot and what i can say is 'Amazing'.

This game is stunning, beautifully crafted by Crystal Dynamics. Ive never felt the urge to finish to the end since i played DS series.

Its a linear game but the lvl design is so intricate it almosts begs you to explore it. Combat is superfun and twitchy. The animation, graphics are gorgeous and the game runs silky smooth at 1080p on a modest pc. The voice acting and cinematic sequences are top notch and lara especially, I loved her!! It feels like the devs wanted the game to be perfect and it is. I cant think of any faults with this.

10/10

Cant wait for Rise of the tomb raider

Playing this right now and almost at the end. Gotta say it got me more thrilled than any Uncharted game, and I play a lot of single player. This game may look familiar, but it's special. Not unique maybe, but very special.

Looks pretty interesting, but very familiar. This is hard for me to say, but the moaning, & groaning are a bit much to follow for hours on end. Just this video i was like really ? I don't think i can stand to go through heavy hours of that. Although i would, - if it wasn't for the Uncharted series. The uncharted series pretty much conquered this type of gaming in my opinion, and no i'm not sexist. I might just have to pick this up soon, and give it a go.

Played it on PC.

Everything in the review is true, except a lack of development in the review about the multiplayer chapter.

Previously I didn't feel like coming to like the Tomb Raider license; playing an exxagerated girl with exxagerated moves and combo moves across linear tunnels wasn't my kind of thing. But this Tomb Raider title is nothing like it. This is an awesome game made by a passionate studio.

I played more than a thousand games, and I believe I could rate this one, in quality and addictivity of gameplay, above all the single-player FPS I have played. Whether you are a Tomb Raider fan, or one who doesn't like Tomb Raider usually, you should play it.

Lara is no longer an exagerated model ; she is a beautiful girl, but not unlike people you could meet in the street. The cameras and action don't focus on her body, and do not strip her all along; she is realistically modeled and filmed, standard-wise it's far above what you see in movies, and it doesn't detract you from the gameplay.

The story, moves, puzzles, combat, everything has a realism and logic to it in the game, much more than you can expect in your regular AAA movie or game. More, for instance, than you can find even in a game such as Metro Last Light. Except a curiosity about a lack of regular fear in our enemies, there is almost no jump, no action that could not be explained and sounds reasonable - which is quite a feat across 23 hours of my gametime.

No storydriven FPS game accomplished that feat, so far.

I see questions below from players: why are there so many so-and-so? no children? no woman? everything is explained; just play the game and think about the story.

You have some kind of freedom across many areas, and for the places where you haven't got much freedom, the surrounding environment is still full of life and details. You have lots of puzzles, but they are doable, they will only make you think for a few minutes.,

Actually the single-player features are astounding on this game, and well described in the review - except that it feels even better than the words being used there. Expect a game made by a passionate studio, and it shows.

Something is wrong or missing in the review though, and it's about multiplayer.

The multiplayer features are on par with FPS multiplayer-only games, meaning they are very comprehensive.

The MP games are played on their own maps, you have characters from each faction that you can upgrade, and lots of skins, weapons, powers, and weapon upgrades to unlock as well. The review just overviewed that in short comments, but you have interested fetch & capture modes.

But a thing I didn't expect the review to overview, was a serious problem in the multiplayer that currently 'breaks it' and turns it into a very uninteresting thing.

A disappointing note is that they completely forgot to fix a very obvious problem: you can create a private multiplayer game, be alone on a map, and score lots of experience points and materials to upgrade yourself. Alone. Without any bots. You can then upgrade yourself to top level (60), with all unlocks, all skins... everything. It's no surprise then, that so many people are level 60 around there.

Nevertheless, the game is ways satisfying enough in singleplayer.

Playing it to the end took me 23 hours, with a 88% exploration completion.

The game duration was very fair and I appreciated that.

But it's the gameplay that was awesome, ALL along these 23 hours ; I had no downtime in it, and in that, the game goes far, far above things like Uncharted (that bored me since it's first platform-puzzle action) or any regular story-driven FPS you might think of (yes, even Deus Ex Revolution, and of course ways above games like COD or Battlefield).

This really was a surprise to me.

Congratulations to the studio for an awesome job.

Thanks to their dedication to a great, playable and enjoyable gameplay, from beginning to end and in a 'long' storydriven game, I vote it 10/10, despite the major multiplayer flaw! It's not a note I gave previously, but they deserve it.

It might have turned me into a Tomb Raider fan... I hope the previous titles won't disappoint me too much ;)

Currently playing this on PS3, it i s awesome! except for a few annoying QTE every once in a while.

When i first saw trailers and vids of it, I thought it is going to be very similar to Uncharted, but it is just somewhat similar. There is a lot more exploring and collecting. jumping, climbing and even combat feel very good imo.

Don't miss out ;)

I have a friend who has been a fan of TR and Lara since the first game, and she refuses to play this because she doesn't like how Lara is portrayed in this game, which is understandable.

I'm probably somewhere around the middle of the game, about 6-7 hours of play time. So far everything about the game is well done... Gorgeous graphics on the PC (especially the light and shadow effects), tight controls with either 360 controller or keyboard mouse, good sound and voice acting, a story that is holding my interest so far... There isn't really much to complain about. About my only big gripe is the general lack of exploration: so far the levels are very much linear and the optional tombs have been nothing more than a somewhat simple puzzle.

As others have stated, I feel they went a bit too far towards 3rd person shooter and too far away from environmental exploration. I can understand that this is the 'origin story'... But I don't think it makes much sense that Lara Croft isn't as skilled at climbing and jumping but can somehow single-handedly kills dozens and dozens of armed attackers. One minute she is limping around looking next to death, the next minute she is skillfully dodging a sword attack then implanting a climbing axe into a dude's forehead. I dunno... it just doesn't ring true. At least the older Tomb Raider games didn't try to fool me into thinking that Lara Croft was anything other than a James Bond meets Indiana Jones super hero. Had their been vast tombs to explore, with fewer moments of tense 'survival combat', I think it would have worked better... But when the game throws another six enemies at you every few minutes, it all just starts to seem like a bit much.

I'm still enjoying things... what they presented is very well done... I just would have liked to see something a bit closer to the original series and bit less like Uncharted. But I can see how this deserves to be in the mix for GOTY.

Regarding the Review: I guess its true, you get the best review you can pay for. Square Enix had to pay GameSpot a lot for this pusillanimous, pandering, suck-up, artsy-crafty, honey-dripping simple-minded review of what was easily the most disappointing game I have seen in years. I have played EVERY Tomb Raider since the very first one, and while they generally vacillate between Good and Horrible, this new one strikes a new standard for combining all the elements of the ridiculous and the sublime in one incoherent, poorly told story that, in spite of graphics that come up to the expected norms of about 2010, has no intriguing content, no imagination, ragged and buggy game-play, mindless puzzles, buzz-killer side missions (the most thrilling is a mushroom hunt), a home-made GUI that defies conventional logic (so easy to buy Scaleform and do it right), and is purely and clearly the output of Japanese amateur story tellers (ah so, think of the first "Godzirra" movie - what a plot--what exposition! ) working under enormous pressure at the financially troubled and failing company, Square Enix. This game takes a person who is really trying to stretch it out about 20 hours to play. (Not counting the several days you spend rebooting from its endless crashes--if it crashes a GTX-680 it will crash anything.) That is damn little entertainment when compared to the real games out there (Mass Effect, Crisis, Borderlands, etc.)

Cutting to the chase.

Pros: Lara is hot.

Cons: Lara needs a bath in every scene: (Or maybe that's why she's hot?)

Summary. If this wins anything it is surely not because serious gamers or players had a voice in the decision.

This game would of been a lot better if it was longer with more enemies. T rex, raptors, giant crocs, and a giant spider would of made this game a lot better. I am glad this game has cannibals though...

This game is awesome! But the puzzles are too easy to solve and, in my opinion... There has to be something else when you finish the game at a 100%. Maybe a new game mode, all weapons from the begning or something like that. Anyway, it's one of the best games I've ever played...

I like the previous Lara Croft a-lot better then this one, and the previous Tomb Raider games with Tomb Raiding. All this game has going for it is much better graphics. If only Tomb Raider Underworld had graphics like this game, then Tomb Raider Underworld would have been a lot better game. Too much combat in this boom boom bang bang for Lara Croft just to be learning, and hot enough Tomb Raiding.

I'm almost finished, enjoying the game but there is way too much combat. Most Tomb Raider games were about environmental puzzles and exploration with a little combat thrown in but this game has completely reversed that. It is basically a third person shooter and the environmental puzzles are completely optional and not terribly difficult. Hope they go for more balance next time.

Just finished it. I enjoyed it a great deal. Reminded me of The Last of Us in many ways, though I liked the gameplay here better. The RPG elements with the weapons, along with the awesome bow and arrow put the gameplay above Uncharted as well. That said, it was a bit rough around the edges with mediocre acting, a weak story, and underwhelming graphics. 8.5/10.

@Keivz_basic strange you say the visuals werent up to par. I played it on a pc in 3d on a gtx780 and it was possibly the best visual experience i've ever had in any game in all my years of gaming. Easily one of the best (if not THE best) 3D experiences I've had so far on PC.

Less killing would of been nice though.

An Amazing Game ... really enjoyed it ... though was short game & somehow easy 2 finish ... I liked the comments here especially this one ... lol ...

**How many people crashed on that island? I've killed hundred of people (all man, they keep their females locked down somewhere?) . It's unbeliveable that so many people of roughly the same age are stranded there, add the overwhelming number of bodies laying around and the numbers skyrocket... it's like a mid-sized city that suddenly disappeared and relocated to that place**

@PeterBelero about the dual wielding, she is becoming "tomb raider." Throughout the game she changes into the Laura Croft we know. It would have been lame if right after the crash she grabs two pistols and goes to work. So at the very ending of the game ((((SPOILER))))), she picks up two pistols and kills Mathias.. Its in there

I'm not impressed... She does not do any of the acrobatics she did in the previous games, I haven`t seen any dual gun shooting yet either, but I`m only 50% through the game. I mean, I used to love diving from cliffs into small openings (remember the swan dive?), swimming underwater through caves, climbing ledges and reaching the top doing an arabesque. I loved her smart mouth remarks, he tough gal attitude... Only thing I didn`t like was the huge chest (She`s an athlete for God`s sake). Now the best part of this game is Lara looks like a real human being for the first time, but she`no gymnast, she`s not graceful, she apparently grabs treasures after treasures without ever feeling the weight... It`s an tremendously unrealistic game; physics are wrong, she carries endless junk in pockets she doesn`t have, no huge environment to explore.... I'm disappointed. They used the Unreal engine for this but they should have built upon Tomb Raider Legend, in my opinion.

Yes Bayonetta, I played and finished Bioshock Infinite even before I started to play Tomb Raider...as the matter a fact, I also expressed my opinion about WHOLE Bioshock under review of that game. I don't think that Bioshock is a bad game... it's pretty fun actually, but in MY OPINION is not that fun as those reviews said and what is most important is not that fun as Tomb Raider... but like I said, it's only my opinian... if you think different that's cool :)

Cheers

Was hugely disappointed too. Unfortunately, series degraded to a simple-minded clone of U know what game. Can't just understand the hype all over and around this game.

@124C1 What game? Have some balls and say what you mean, or don't say anything at all.

In my opinion TR is the best game of this year so far.... way better than pretty overrated Bioshock. Yes... it's too short and easy and storyof archeologist Lara who became Bear Grills is very unrealistic... but anyway the game is pure fun. Sory for bad english.

@sinatra666 Have you played one second of BioShock: Infinite? I've played both the new Tomb Raider and BioShock: Infinite. They're entirely different games, but they're superior in different categories to each other. There's a reason people praise BioShock: Infinite, and for the most part, I agree that it is a contestant for GOTY. Then again, so is Tomb Raider. But at least play BioShock: Infinite before you call it, "pretty overrated."

Very pretty, but too short, too easy, and too many quick time events. The duck-and-cover-heavy shooting formula is also becoming overdone.

I was happy to see that Lara didn't have massive breasts this time around- if only to dispel the notion that males are all sex crazed lunatics that prefer large breasts- but was promptly disappointed by a story with not-so-subtle feminist undertones.

@IceVagabond there is nothing wrong with having women have big tits in games men have big muscles in most games so what there is nothing wrong with either why wouldn't you choose to make a character better looking if you could and yes most men prefer big boobs over small or average sized ones sounds like you have small tits and to cover you insecurities about them you try and blame men like we are not aloud to have a certain taste in women when it comes to sexual attraction if you aren't very attractive that is not any mans fault of course we would prefer a hot girl with good looks great body great ass nice big tits sexy legs nice lips and so on just like most women are usually attracted to men with a tan and big muscles and does some sort of hobby like surfing **** some of youse women are hypocrites youse blame men for things you and/or your own gender does but act like its only bad when men do it and yes most males are crazed about sex that does not make us lunatics firstly because we naturally have a much higher sex drive then women secondly sex is healthy and most importantly because sex feels amazing especially when you have an orgasm why the **** would someone not want to make them selves feel physical pleasure very often like everyday sometimes twice a day really it makes someone a lunatic not to be crazed they stop them selves from feeling a lot of pleasure just to keep a false sense of decency when there is nothing wrong with sex anyway

@tom2750 @IceVagabond I thought Lara had an amazing rack in this. Definitely enjoyed looking at her while playing.

A great game with stunning graphics, but if only they make the game a little bit harder or longer though..
