Yoshi's Woolly World Review

Knot your ordinary platformer.

Ever since Nintendo concealed a magic vine in World 2-1 on Super Mario Bros, the company has been obsessed with splicing secrets and wondrous little diversions in its platform games. Yoshi's Woolly World honours this tradition, but also subverts it. Here, finding hidden items is technically an optional side-quest, but paradoxically, it's also the game's only real challenge.

Should you decide against hunting down Woolly World's hundreds of secluded items, opting instead to dash across its 48 levels as though you were playing any other Mario platformer, then you're likely to come away slightly disappointed. Played straight, Woolly World does not inspire enough quick thinking or daring leaps of faith. There's no time limit, and no lives to lose, which gives the proceedings a measured, pedestrian pace. The boss fights, meanwhile, can be conquered on first attempts.

As expected from a Nintendo platformer, the controls are immeasurably perfect and dependable. Along with the usual high-jumps, tongue-whips and ground-pounds, Yoshi can also carry balls of yarn with him, which can be tossed at the press of a button. This manoeuvre requires timing, as once you hold down the throw button, a reticule will run up and down the screen, which will determine the projectile's trajectory upon the button's release. Care and attention is necessary, as Yoshi only has a max capacity of five yarns, and they are handy in many scenarios, such as activating secret platforms and wrapping piranhas in cotton muzzles. Since the vast majority of foes are made of wool, Yoshi can pull them in with his tongue, and instantly digest them into new balls of yarn. It's probably not worth mentioning where the balls sprout from.

The excellent controls only makes Woolly World easier to finish without many issues. In fact, if you have experience playing the likes of Super Mario World or Yoshi's Island, it's likely you'll be able to breeze through the game's first half on autopilot: Run right, line your jumps along the craniums of Shy Guys and Koopas, eat foes with a whip of Yoshi's tongue, and reach the exit on the furthermost-right point of the level. No real peril or heroics; just violent tourism.

"Played straight, Woolly World does not inspire enough quick thinking or daring leaps of faith."

Fear not; You can still find that inimitable Nintendo sparkle, that magical je ne sais quoi which enlivens your inner-child who is absolutely over the moon that you still play video games. It's just that, while Woolly World can be wonderfully fun, it's only so if you choose to make the most of it. Specifically, when each level is finished, a list of collectable items shows all the hidden little treasures you missed along the way, and to unlock Woolly World's bonus content (such as the rock-hard S-levels, as well as some imaginative Yoshi skins), you gotta catch 'em all.

Each of the 48 levels contain five hidden rolls of yarn, which if collected, gives you a custom Yoshi skin.
Each of the 48 levels contain five hidden rolls of yarn, which if collected, gives you a custom Yoshi skin.

So while it's undemanding to complete almost any stage in less than five minutes, doing so with the full set of collectables in tow requires scrupulous scavenging and sleuthing, and some of the most fiendishly concealed secrets will evade your best search efforts for upwards of half an hour. This is Woolly World at its best; Moments where you scan the landscape to spot architectural anomalies that could be hiding something, or running into a wall you suspect is a secret tunnel, or leaping into the great unknown outside the screen's field of view like a cartoon Columbus.

The eye-catching art style, which is an ambitious attempt to portray everything as though it's knitted in wool, naturally offers some excellent hiding places. Tiny loose threads occasionally protrude from giant plinths of cushion, and if pinched by Yoshi's tongue, unravel soft little bunkers containing various treasures. Other collectables are tucked away behind some of the spongier stacks of pillow, which Yoshi can compress by pushing his whole weight against. It's the video game equivalent of finding money down the back of the sofa, and it never fails to satisfy.

The local co-op adds a welcome wild-card element; Nearly everything is easier, but also much clumsier as players constantly bump into one another.
The local co-op adds a welcome wild-card element; Nearly everything is easier, but also much clumsier as players constantly bump into one another.

Whether the plush visuals win your eyes over is another matter entirely. With everything rendered as though it was knitted together, some of the smaller details are sacrificed, which is perhaps why Woolly World sometimes comes off as a little characterless. The charm and razzamatazz you'd expect from a Nintendo game seems to have been diminished, to an extent, in the transition to wool and cotton. That goes for Yoshi too; Some of his animation flourishes seem like excellent ideas on paper, such as how his legs can spin into cotton wheels when he sprints, or when they morph into small propellers as he leaps. In practice, however, they are unexplained and seem out of place. It's as if fast legs were too complex to animate with virtual wool.

"Your suspicious nature is constantly rewarded."

But perhaps that's a tad unfair on something that attempts--and succeeds--to visually distinguish itself from most other Nintendo games, especially since the level design is built upon the Mario Bros template. It's also pleasantly surprising that a game fixated on treasure-hunting works so well in the narrow horizontal strip of a side-scrolling platformer. Exceedingly well, in fact; better than any other Nintendo game before it.

How can so many secrets be tucked into such a flat space? The game's answer, more often than not, is to conceal its collectable sunflowers (stars and shines were on vacation) inside small question-mark clouds that remain invisible unless touched by Yoshi or his projectiles. Many of these are placed in obvious locations, such as the crest of a jump between platforms, while others require a developer's intuition ("where would I hide this?") to know where to look. When you probe a suspected hiding place by flinging one of Yoshi's yarns at it, and when your inquisitiveness is rewarded with a secret item, a wave of pride passes through you.

Additional Yoshi skins can be accessed by placing an Amiibo on the GamePad, creating bizarre cross-pollinations such as Mario-Yoshi.
Additional Yoshi skins can be accessed by placing an Amiibo on the GamePad, creating bizarre cross-pollinations such as Mario-Yoshi.

But on occasion, you need some luck to find every secret, due to the seemingly random placement of some the invisible clouds. Sometimes it seems unreasonable that 99 items were discovered by following the game's logic, while the elusive hundredth was tucked away in some arbitrary spot in the sky.

Fortunately, this is where Poochy comes in, your painfully adorable dog sidekick who--later in the game--can be summoned for 5000 gems (don't worry, you always have enough). This wonderful little fella sniffs out secrets and bounces around like you're the postman at his front door when he's found something. He can also collect items for you from hard-to-reach places, as well as handle nearby enemies for you. Most important of all; when he helps you, he does a little gleeful jig. Hearts will melt.

Later on, other major perks can be bought for gems, such as the game-changing ability to make all hidden items visible. This is an invaluable tool for those who want to find absolutely everything, but not to the extent that it feels like you're playing in God Mode. Between this and Poochy, you'll have enough perks to make it entirely feasible to collect all sunflowers in every level, and should you put in that effort, your reward is six S-rank courses, which undoubtedly offer Woolly World's smartest, trickiest, and most creative challenges.

But this memorable bonus content, much like everything worth your time in Woolly World, is only available if you choose to hunt it down. You don't need to collect a single hidden item on your journey from 1-1 to the final boss. Some would say that gives Woolly World its inherent accessibility, in that players aren't forced to take the hard road. But if you want to be fully entertained, the hard road is the only real option. It is your own degree of curiosity, and your compulsive nature, that will determine which route you'll take.

The Good

  • Accessibility for younger players
  • Layers of challenge for core players
  • Unlockable S-rank levels are excellent
  • Poochy is painfully adorable

The Bad

  • Too basic for platformer fans
  • Visuals won't impress everyone
  • Some collectables are unreasonably hidden
  • Fun lies in the diversions, not the main game

This is and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze are one of the worst reviews ever. Both games are easily 8.

I gave this game a 9/10. Giving it a 6/10 is a tragedy. Same with Tropical Freeze. These are two of the best Nintendo games. It's just sad that you guys must have forgotten what fun is. These games are fun and challenging. Your complaints do not justify the score.

Rob, you obviously should not be reviewing Nintendo games. This is one of the years best Wii U titles getting great reviews and this follows another gaffe in giving DK Tropical Freeze a 6/10 which is a top 5 Wii U game. If you are a hardcore RPG player, these platform games are not going to appeal to you.

How can a game that is too basic for platform fans(-) have layers of challenge for core players(+).

Did you even review what you wrote before hitting send?

What are Gamespot thinking, this game is easily an 8. A 6 score is harsh, i found this to be quite interesting, clever and overall a lot of fun to play. Yes, some of the collectibles can be a little tricky to get. But that's 1/2 the fun of the game.

60 for Yoshi Yarn, 50 For TriForce Heros = Gamespot Nintendo Bias!

Folks, let's face it. I have played Yoshi Yarn for 15 hours, and, it's fantastic. Gamespot scores it a low 60, way off the curve, stating, "Finding hidden items is technically an optional side-quest, but paradoxically, it's also the game's only real challenge."

No Gamespot, finding hidden items is not an optional sidequest. It's the game within the game that seperates the "mellow moders" from the "veteran moders" It's the only way to open up over a dozen additional, OMG! challenging levels that will blow the minds of the best of the best of platform players.

Reading your dumb review, I am CONFIDENT that, the person who reviewed the game did not 100% the game. Merely blew through probably half the levels, without even trying to achieve collecting everything. And, collecting everything IS the real way to beat a game like this, Super Mario 3D World, and, especially, Mario Galaxy's, where 100%ing the game opens up epic levels. I challenge the writer of the Gamespot review to show me his save file, post it here. I will wager it is not 100% (and, prove the file is yours by showing your user name in the screen shot). I will wager that the reviewer can not sit down and 100% even World 1S on the game (without using a handicap badge). This is the first special world within the game that blows my mind. Cant imagine what 2S, 3S, etc are like!

Then, to read another review that is so against the curve, TriForce Heroes, getting a 50, way against the curve. I smell something is very very fishy with the editorial department at Gamespot.

NOA, stop giving them review copies!!

Just remember folks if you disagree with a review it is not the end of the world. The best thing you can do to support a game you like is to go buy it instead of going all in on the reviewer. I promise you that Nintendo's decision to continue making Yoshi games is based more on the bottom line than critical acclaim.

I am very much enjoying this game. I'm only on world 3 but so far I would give this a 9 from what I have played. From my perspective this is one of the most joyful games I have played since Super Mario 3D World and my favorite Yoshi game so far. On the visuals side of things I feel like this is one of the best looking Wii U games and I think they did great with the yarn aesthetic.

Rob Crossley. You simultaneously said the game was too easy and too hard. You cite other people's opinions of the visuals as a negative thing, while citing your own opinion of the visuals (poochy) as a good thing. And your primary complaint seems to be that unlocking only a portion of the game's content isn't rewarding enough.

What do you really think of this game? You're confusing. You gave it a 6/10 but really a very good treatment in the written body of the review.

For completionists this is a 9 (which is the right way to play a Nintendo platformer). For people interested only in getting from point A to B is a 6.

There's some good, challenging platforms already on the WiiU. I like that this one seems genuinely different.

This is embarrassing. So, GameSpot only give the incredible Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze a 6/10 and same with this game. Both are a 10 in my book. GameSpot are entitled to their opinion, but their reviews aren't professional enough. Proof: ''Rob resisted playing The Witcher 3 just so he could review Woolly World for you. Please understand.''

They need somebody who actually know about platformers to review these games instead of just randomness with a score and untrue statements, such as ''Too basic for platformer fans.'' Now, I'm a platformer fan and I didn't think it was too basic. Plus the ''Rob resisted playing The Witcher 3 just so he could review Woolly World for you. Please understand'' thing may be an attempt at humo(u)r, but it is certainly a big F for fail. That's just being silly. He obviously didn't do much with this game or even give it a chance.

So let's add this up. GameSpot gave Rayman Legends the 9/10 it deserves then they give Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and Yoshi's Woolly World a 6/10 which both deserve at least a 9/10; if not higher. Strike one. They mention Yoshi's Woolly World being too easy and they didn't in Rayman Legends which is pretty easy too. Strike two. GameSpot don't have professionals to review platformers which means that only ''mature'' titles will get positive reviews. Strike three! You're out, GameSpot!

I have totally lost trust in GameSpot's reviews now. Want better reviewers? Stick with Destructoid. They gave Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze the 10/10 that it deserves.

Overall Verdict: Don't trust GameSpot. Destructoid are far superior.

@mkflame7: DKC: TF was mediocre and deserved a 6. The part that frustrated me the most while playing it was cheap deaths because I didn't jump at the exact right time. I get it, platofrmers are supposed to challenge you with figuring out the proper time to jump, but not when it's an extremely simple jump from one platform to the next with absolutely no hazards or distractions whatsoever and Donkey Kong misses it by an inch because you didn't jump at the very last part of the platform. Donkey Kong should not be a platformer- his jumps are too low for you to make solid movements every time. The game also is very artsy and cinematic, but that isn't always a good thing when you can't tell the difference between a platforming element and a design flourish. The same with cutscenes, I never know where they begin and end, so I'm left doing nothing when I thought there was still a cutscene doing the work for me. A platformer does not need to look pretty and have cutscenes, it needs precise gameplay and it needs fast gameplay. DKC: Tropical Freeze did not provide either of those. People only liked it because it's Donkey Kong and it looks good and they're supposed to like it. I'm not a platforming hater either: some of my favorite games are Mario, Mega Man, Kirby, and Shovel Knight, so it really came as a surprise how much I hated this game.

@happylittlepigs: there's no cheap deaths in Tropical Freeze, the game is highly technical. Saying "his jumps are too low" is ridiculous, instead of learning the game mechanics, you try to play it like every-other-plataformer you like?

I just don't get it. Why are you on Gamespot then? Not trying to be defensive of GS (they're ok I guess), but shouldn't you be at destructiod?

I mean, it's just a review...if you like the game then I say that's good enough for you (Still doesn't make this a great game, I'm almost with GS on this one, it's a 7/10 game).

Remember Nintendo fans, just because you will buy it/bought it does not mean it's that good (not everything made by Nintendo is good).
The score seems reasonable, it's a game with a control made back in 1995, although it was suitable in Super Mario World 2, Yoshi's Island for the N64 proved it wasn't good enough for a standalone game based on it, they did improve it but it's still a bit clunky and wierd.

Looking pretty, true, but still a shallow game.

Wii U won't last long with games like this. Nintendo should have focused on translating Xenoblade faster. That one might help some Wii U sales (and also if they bothered doing a price cut).

@saosebastiao: Moronic and specious reasoning. For a start it’s clear you’ve not played this game – I’ve put 10 hours in so far and this is a 9/10 title. It’s brilliant (and this is coming from 30 years' gaming experience). I think it’s obvious from your opening line you’re a PS4 or Xbox sycophant – what you need to remember is a great review is one which looks at matters impartially (you’ll need to look this word up).

Impartiality is good journalism. What GameSpot have done is embarrassing and they’re making themselves look amateurish. First there was the DKC embarrassment, and now this, where it’s clear the reviewer wants to be off on Witcher 3.

Your vacuous logic aside – a great game is a great game. The latest Yoshi title is a fantastic game. The most abhorrent thing here is you've not even played Yoshi's Woolly World and you're passing judgement! Get out of here, you hypocrite.

@jareth84: I do not own a PS4 or Xbox One, I like all game consoles, I like any game as long as it's a good game, but I guess it doesn't matter to you anyway since your the typical blind Nintendo fan, you can't even determine if a game is good or not by itself, all you see is a Nintendo brand and immediately consider it to be good.
Splatoon is no way near a 9/10 game, and never will be. There are far too better games out there for it to be considered a 9/10 game. There are a lot of 8/10 games better than Splatoon. No one will care about that game in 3 months from now, it's that shallow. Fun, but shallow. If you want to keep believing its that good of a game, hey, it's your life...just don't make the game better than it actually is just to compensate for the lack of games on the Wii U. Yoshi's new game isn't that great either and hey, surprise, surprise, it's shallow too, whadda ya know...

Yes, Gamespot sometimes has reviews that we can't begin to comprehend, DKC was one, Skyward sword was another one, but Nintendo has seen better days software-wise, just look at Pokemon X and Y, same old same old, little improvements and people rant about it getting ok-good reviews. Heck we can say that about most Nintendo titles. Even Zelda games are getting a bit stale on the 3DS. They resorted to port a 14 year old game, it doesn't matter how good it was, they were just plain lazy.

The only hypocrite I see here is you buddy (you're probably a kid that doesn't know any better), that's exactly the type of behaviour that is destroying Nintendo. You fans just accept whatever they send at you, they get no feedback, since "hey, it's Nintendo, it's good, thank you Nintendo!", Nintendo just interprets this as a "they'll buy anything we send at them". That's why you don't get great new IP's, no major changes in games, why you get Amiibos, stale games. You don't even argue with Nintendo to get 3rd party support, I mean c'mon, no 3rd party games on a console = dead console. Nintendo is killing itself but its fans have 50% the blame. This is Sega Saturn all over again.

I say it again, Wii U won't last long. Good riddance, get your **** together Nintendo, try again.

@kingb: Ouch, such hostility. I have played that N64 Yoshi, Yoshi's Island or Story, a looong time ago. I wasn't that good back then, still lacked diversity and it isn't good now. Older people tend to know a lot more about some games. Younger people usually don't know some of the games of an IP. In this case it started very well with Super Mario World 2, amazing game, then it became average with the N64 Yoshi game and the DS ones. Looks like they finally improved sometime but it still seems it's not enough. But it's a start.

If you hadnt resisted on playing w3 instead of this, it would have been better. Rayman Legends was one of the easiest platformer games ive ever played. However, the review didnt mention it there.

I dont think this games Deserves 6, Although i havent played it just watched the trailers.

Loving this game ... as much as my 6 year old!!! I sneak back on when hes sleeping to unlock the Yoshis coz its pretty hard to get through the levels together, never mind find everything!! The look on his wee face when we pass a level/discover new things is amazing!! Some people just don't understand simple, innocent, unpretentious fun .... Nintendo do!!! 8 or 9 for me .... and I'm sorry - "Visuals wont impress everyone!!!!!"????? ...... Cant believe anyone who viewed this game could be anything less than completely charmed!!!!!

@marknelson: That's so cute. I used to do something like that with my dad, back when he played Mario Kart Wii with me. When he was at work, I'd go on his file and get a gold star in a few of his cups, and say it was the Mario Kart fairy :D. I'm better than he was, in case that wasn't clear.

No comparisons to the game that it most surely emulates closest- Kirby's Epic Yarn? Mediocre score notwithstanding, I'll be sure to check this one out even ahead of the generally better received Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.

LOL

its true that this game its simple at first sight (i havent played so i cannot say for certain that if its true or not the 6/10). the problem here is that youre giving scores lightly (splatoon 8/10?? yeah right) since years ago, i remember the thrill of playing final fantasy 13 in ps3 (you scored this one 8.5/10), when i finally bought it, it was nowhere close to a rpg game but still they insisted that this game was fabulous and it surpassed its predecesor....after that i no longer trusted this review system of yours.

but...... what do i know? im just only a fool who is traveling in this world of conceptions

Any valid points the reviewer made became debatable when I read "Bob resisted playing The Witcher 3 just so he could review Woolly World for you. Please understand." What a failed attempt at humor. It makes the reviewer look like he was dragged away from playing Witcher 3 until he finished reviewing Woolly World. Though I can't really say the game is awesome since I haven't played it yet, they could have left out that last statement. Looking back at DK Tropical Freeze, I'm seeing a trend here. TOO MUCH PLATFORMER, 6/10!!

I have to confess that I would like to see a new review written by a reviewer that has a deeper conscientiousness about platform games.

It's clear, with no doubts, that this guy doesn't know enough about this kind of games and he also doesn't have a wide culture and experience.

Too bad for Gamespot, this review should be removed and rewritten, especially after the previous embarrassing review about DKC: Tropical Freeze.

Gamespot could you please consider our feedbacks and fix this obvious failure? I think that we all will appreciate your effort on this.

I don't know if Gamespot's part of the anti-Nintendo sect of the media, but this review is embarrassing. I just spent the weekend playing this game - it's a 9/10. It's brilliant fun. Now Gamespot also awarded the sensational DKC: Tropical Freeze 6/10. You guys are welcome to your opinion, but this is plain old embarrassing.

Be aware you're making yourselves look unprofessional with these vacuous assessments. I certainly won't be bothering reading your site any more seeing as you don't know what you're on about. I'll stick with Destructoid. They gave Tropical Freeze the 10/10 it deserved, just so you know. Up your game. This is poor stuff.

@jareth84Well said. The score is based purely on one man's opinion. And if you are a professional reviewer you simply cannot do that. I don't like all the "mature" games out there like GTA. Would I own GTA? No. I would give it a 1. But almost nobody will agree with me. I'd either remove myself from reviewing the game, or do everything in my power to figure out what the general gaming community would feel when playing this game. Rayman gets a 9, this gets a 6. DKC:TF gets a 6 as well. I've played DKC a lot, and it is my favorite Wii U game to date, and I know a lot of people share my opinion. I played Rayman too, and I enjoyed it. There is NO WAY it is better than DKC, and I'm guessing there is also no way it is better than Yoshi's WW

A 6?? He spent the whole time saying how good it is except for being too easy (only if you want it to be) and then gives it a 6?! I don't get it.

This site wouldn't know a good platformer if it bit them in the ass. Gave tropical freeze a fucking 6/10! Games one of the best platformers ever.

"Rob resisted playing The Witcher 3 just so he could review Woolly World for you. Please understand"

"yeah its not an rpg so we will shit on it"

@valentine_smith: Absolutely, this is the point I brought up. The far superior Destructoid gave Tropical Freeze 10/10. Gamespot's problem is they're making themselves look like amateurs with these dreadful reviews.

"Bob resisted playing The Witcher 3 just so he could review Woolly World for you. Please understand."

The fact the reviewer made it sound like he was forced to play and review Yoshi instead of playing the heavily marketed game Witcher 3, like it was torture, makes the last review seem bias and unprofessional.

I'll reserve judgement until I've played it tonight, but GameSpot also managed to give Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze 6/10. That game's a masterpiece. Destructoid correctly handed it 10/10, and you guys accused it of being banal and boring. You're welcome to your opinion, but you got it horrendously wrong with Tropical Freeze. Let's see how you manage with Yoshi.
