Zack Snyder's Justice League: Relentlessly Boring And Endlessly Long

  • First Released Mar 18, 2021
    released
  • movie

The Snyder Cut hits HBO Max this week, if you've got four hours to spend.

For better or worse, the superhero niche of pop culture is full of bizarre cultural artifacts, from the comics themselves to the TV and movies they inspire. Zack Snyder's Justice League--more colloquially known as "The Snyder Cut"--is just another in a long line of puzzling cape-and-cowl franchise moments. The four hour long re-cut of the 2018 box office bomb, complete with extra scenes and re-shoots will land on HBO Max on March 18 and--well, if you've ever been brave enough to ask the question "is it possible for a superhero movie to feel like watching paint dry?" This one's for you.

It will be easier to recount the parts of Justice League that actually do see some benefit from the re-cut treatment first. Villain Steppenwolf has been given a design overhaul that looks much better than its theatrical counterpart and an entirely new subplot dealing with his motivations has been added for extra context and it does work, for the most part. DC Comics big bads like Darkseid and DeSaad have been added as well, granting the bizarre MacGuffin fetch quest and resulting CGI punch out some gravity. This, however, makes up about twenty total minutes of the extra-long runtime and most, if not all, of the extra villain scenes are done with a distracting mishmash of old and new VFX that give them a dated video game cut-scene feel.

The new stuff also feels very, very crowded with a bunch of vestigial old stuff that remained from the theatrical version. Yes, Steppenwolf has a motivation now and an explicit set of stakes, but they're all pasted on top of the rest--the Lord of the Rings flavored motherbox MacGuffins, "The Unity" terraforming gambit which we still learn about entirely through non sequitur expository one-liners--it's all still there. The excess might feel decadent had any of it been delivered in an interesting way, but instead we're left with characters (mostly Wonder Woman) practically looking directly into the camera to explain the backstory to the audience.

While Wonder Woman and Batman are relegated to exposition machine status and Superman only shows back up over two hours in, Cyborg, Flash, and Aquaman get some added screen time. Unfortunately, Cyborg is the only one who actually sees any benefit from the bonus content with some genuinely interesting glimpses into Victor Stone's inner world, motivations, and existential responsibilities with his unique powerset. Barry Allen, on the other hand, gets a strange and ultimately deeply uncomfortable moment with a woman he rescues that makes him come off as equal parts obnoxious and creepy. The woman is, of course, Kiersey Clemons' Iris West, but she's never actually named and has no dialogue so there's nothing to indicate this character's identity at all if you weren't already clued in to the casting choice well in advance. Meanwhile, Aquaman shares a few new scenes with Vulko (Willem Dafoe) and Mera (Amber Heard) that do little but meander aimlessly around vague Atlantean concepts that, since Justice League's original theatrical release, have been better explored in the solo Aquaman film.

Snyder's bizarre choice to render the movie in a 4:3 pillarboxed aspect ratio gives it the feel of a sloppily cut together amateur fan video--the sort of thing you might have encountered in a Quicktime player back in the early '00s on someone's Final Fantasy villain fan shrine. This effect is exacerbated by the relentless use of slow-mo musical stingers. The first hour has no fewer than three scenes where what would have been a ten-second blip is smeared out into a minute or more, complete with its own mournful, dirge-like soundtrack. The back half trades in music for voice overs, exclusively from the perspectives of fathers and sons, but the function is the same--racking up runtime in the most unenjoyable way possible.

Taking up time seems to be the name of the game for most of the cut--whole scenes exist to engineer deeply contrived explanations for things that need no explaining while actual gaps in the plot's logic are dismissed out of hand. If you were worried about how, exactly, Batman's bracers can withstand the energy blasts from a Parademon, The Snyder Cut has you covered in meticulous detail. If you want to know why Cyborg, who has direct access to every single piece of technology on the planet at his fingertips, Batman, who has a satellite that can pinpoint any object on Earth, or Superman, who can hear conflict happening across the globe from anywhere, can't seem to find an entire Russian town cut off from the grid by a giant, glowing energy field without the help of a sci-fi GPS tag, you're out of luck.

At this point it really must be said that a streaming release is the Snyder Cut's only gift to us. Being able to pause and resume it freely is the one thing standing in the way of it feeling like a cruel endurance test.

That said, it would be pointless to critique Justice League against anything but its own rubric. In a pop culture ecosystem dominated by massive franchises, reinvention of superhero characters is the norm, so any effort spent trying to wring hands about how Batman doesn't feel like Batman when he's mowing down aliens with a gatling gun or Superman doesn't work when he's scowling is moot. These characters, in the form Snyder has given them, probably could have worked if they existed in a better movie. The performances--when they're actual performances and not CGI ragdolls being hurled around the screen--are solid. But they never get to be more than that--a cluster of serviceable actors doing an okay job at not looking like they're addressing ping pong balls on sticks in front of green screens.

None of which is to say that the theatrical version is somehow the superior cut of the film--it's not. The temptation to crown a "winner" between the two versions is obviously there, but doing so largely misses the point. You now have a choice between a slightly shorter uninspired mess of a movie, or a longer one.

The Good

  • Added context for Steppenwolf makes him a decent villain
  • New Cyborg scenes work to flesh out Victor Stone in interesting ways

The Bad

  • Four hour run time feels endless
  • Added scenes for Flash and Aquaman are clunky
  • Incongruous soundtrack choices get old very quickly
  • Horrible VFX look like cheap, dated video game cutscenes
  • New characters like Iris West are given no dialogue or point in the plot

Finally got through 1 hour and 11 minutes of this movie. Tried watching it before but kept getting reminded of how self absorbed Zack Snyder is with his movies. Every movie he's ever done, is about himself, whatever the story may be and this one is no different, except its painfully 4 hours long. OMFG. How much more of this over dramatic and depressing movie can we take. God I miss how much fun the Whedon version is. Terrible movie but at least it made me laugh. This version makes me want to slit my wrists. Anyone who likes this movie is obviously a fan of Snyder and his bizarre overcooked style. Just imagine him planning your wedding or thanksgiving dinner. You might see what I'm talking about. And something to consider, if it took him 4 hours to tell this dreadfully depressing story, maybe its because he wasn't too sure of the story he wanted to tell, so he put it all in.

My issue with this movie is how lame the Barry Allen actor is & was when they cast him..

& that's on top of the justice league neing a intro instead of a movie with them just being there on the watchtower or Hall of Justice.

They can do the origin of the league in a prequel if they want..

But at this point it seems small. And the league is more then these few.

Snyder isn't worthy to carry this torch. He's miles ahead of Joss thats for sure but

that's still not nerd enough.

I finally watched The Snyder Cut, and ... yeah, it's pretty bad. So much longer than it needs to be, cheesy, overwrought, but mostly it's just kinda dumb. The Snyder Cut takes 4 hours to tell a spaghetti bowl of a story poorly. And it does it in an aspect ratio nobody has screens for anymore.

Yes, this is better than the theatrical release, and yeah, it's probably better than a 3, but it's still a bad movie and not worth the time even if it didn't take up such a ridiculous amount of it.

Once again...Mr. Downey is as out of touch and wrong as the current political party in power. This movie is essential and great. 8/10

I'm amazed this biased tripe is still up here. So glad the reviewer is getting rightfully skewered by posters.

I just came here from another review, one that gave the Mortal Kombat, a movie I’d be hard pressed if asked to name a worse film, a 9, only to read a review of a movie that I thought was actually pretty good giving it a 3.

My tastes in films are clearly different than Gamespot’s reviewers, lol.

I definitely wouldn’t say the movie is boring and a 3 is way too low of a score. I do agree though with the reviewer about the overuse of exposition, and the constant slow mo scenes with the somber background music. That stuff to me personally was a negative about the film, but other than that it was way better than the original justice league and more fun in general, very much enjoyed it.

Dinsey paid them well for this review am sure. One of the worst review I have ever read. Movie was 4 hours of pure Fun not relentlessly long and boring.

@saadred: Why would Disney try to sabotage a direct to digital movie that already made its money? The studios have no dogs in this fight...only you fanboys.

@ZombieVirolina: This reviewer is a clear person that lacks professionalism ... imagine a movie with a score of 3 out of 10. lol Is it the worst movie in the world? I have just watched it and I really had a good time and all my friends, and I am a marvel fan. This guy has really some mental problems, maybe some fan boy syndrome movies or personal hate for the direction and he thinks that's the only thing that deserves a fair score. I feel sorry for the person who wrote this, he clearly is really bad and he is the many reasons I will stop visiting gamespot. Imagine hiring a construction worker to build a spaceship... this is what he is... a 10 year old kid reviewing movies and writting about them. Sorry gamespot, you have been the site I always came to read my reviews but when you hire people that really is dilisuonal and lack professionalism, you just miss the whole point. It just doesnt bring joy anymore. There's opinions and then there's hate for the work of someone. In the most professional way and the minimum it could have, for all visual effects, cut , costumes, soundtrack, story line and art direction, min of min a 7 out of 10, thats the minimum of the minimum.... we are not here reviewing the movie "The room" or another Disaster movie... this movie cut had really hard work on it, it is such a shame that this journalist can't even appreciate and value the hard work of thousands of people... this guy is so low that if I could score this journalism, I would give him a 1/10.

I let this article sway me and was prepared for a disaster when I watched it. But you know what, it is actually much better than what was depicted in this article. Yes, its long at 4 hours. But its conveniently broken into parts. You can easily pause and pick up where you left off. The first 3 hours really explained a lot more detail and the story was a lot more nuanced then the original. The last hour suffered a bit from deux ex machina in my opinion. It probably should have gone for an additional hour and I would not have minded it. But I get it. 4 hours is already pushing it. Still, overall it was a good job and I'm happy for Zack. He got to tell it how he really wanted.

highly recommend it. Just don't sit through all 4 hours at once if you can't sit still for so long, like me!

Sorry Mason. I disagree. 8/10.

Gamespot : this review is

Relentlessly Boring And Endlessly Long

I read this before seeing the movie, which I had been looking forward to for sooooo long after being disappointed by the original, and was gutted. I saw the movie and enjoyed every minute of it ! I am absolutely disgusted with this review.

8/10 for the fans out there! Go watch and enjoy!

This review appears to have been written by a spiteful ninth grader. After watching this movie, I'm tempted to say this is not a real review, for him bashing the CGI work alone (which was absolutely fantastic and highly polished). Don't believe ANYTHING this guy says here. The Zak Snyder cut is light years better than the theatrical release (which I enjoyed despite it's flaws), and easily is in my top 10 favorite superhero movies, possibly top 5. The Snyder cut and the original version are two entirely different movies that happen to share some similar footage. Despite it's running time, I wanted more, and am sorely disappointed that the Snyder era for the Justice League has come to an end. Absolutely epic and a must watch.

Please never let mason near a keyboard when needing a reviee on what was a F****** epic film the REAL fans deserved. He should definitely stick to films that are in his lane because it feels like he already went in with an issue with the film before seeing it. Ive watched it 3 times now and i enjoy it more and more each time. Big thumbs up for the film, BIG thumbs down for this excise of a "review"

Especially the part with Martha and Louis was extraordinarily good for me and then the shock :D.

In many scenes the film is darker than before. Even in funny moments, the musical mood makes everything a little more oppressive. I can't really understand the claim in the review that the effects are cheap.

" another issue is the film heavily features the back story of aqua man and Wonder Woman as a central part of the plot" sorry did you watch the movie ? Its nitpicking at its best. I bought every Marvel Movie in 4k as i adore those Movies and this movie ( i konw its not marvel ) my friend is something special even if WB is messing things up whis what they wanted and expected it to be. They should stop attacking the actors they did a very very good job here i realy like to see them all again.

@epic_g_ame08:

I was referring to all the stuff in Atlantis and Amazonia to find the boxes and the Lotr style flashback (the army of men etc). The further you stay away from that stuff and the daughter of Aries - the easier it is (for me at least) to accept the premise. MCU seemed to get away from some of the more out there comic book set ups and holes by the occasional nod and wink.

I guess the shock is good if you knew who the character was but why he wanted to get Lois back to work so quick was a mystery to me (was he secret working for the Daily Planet HR department or something?). Even from a plot point of view - wasn’t it the fact that she didn’t go to work the next day and instead visited the monument the reason she was around to calm Superman?

i’ve heard a few complaints about the visual effects but I agree on this point that they seemed ok to me - and I bet they were almost certainly not cheap.

I also agree the actors did well with what they were given (which wasn’t much from a script point of view) - although Ben Affleck doesn’t really sell it to me as Batman ( although I think he is a talented guy). Certainly not as good as Christain Bale or Michael Keating.

@nee50n:

Ben Affleck was a perfect fit for the role and he was a better Bruce Wayne than any actor before. I don't like Bale, but I love the three Nolan films. Just because I can't stand Bale, I don't write down the films here either.

Jack Nicholson was the best Joker of all time so who cares.....

Different stroke and all that but I really cannot understand the positive reaction of this movie. It was so excessive, pointless in places (I just do not get the Lois Lane/Martha scene) and the terrible dialogue - it was all so awkward. There is very little I disagree with this review.

I thought the cyborg stuff was interesting, but lines like “I know your son is the captain of the football team and a certified genius but...” just had me rolling my eyes. i appreciate this is the sort of dialogue you would get in a comic book (ie, need to tell story very quickly), but you need to adapt to the medium.

another issue is the film heavily features the back story of aqua man and Wonder Woman as a central part of the plot. Now of course we need to suspend disbelief in order for these movies to work - but of all the characters their back stories are by far the most ridiculous. To the point where the more you know about these stories the more stupid the film set up seems. Definitely less is more here.

In a way, what sums up this movie for me was the butchering of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah on the end credits. The idea that somehow you can improve the song with excess and vocal gymnastics - it just misses the point.

that said I was happy to watch the movie - and was entertained in parts. I probably would not have paid to see it at the cinema but for a lockdown movie i didn’t have a problem with the four hour run time (I’ve sat through Ingmar Bergman’s Fanny and Alexander before) I just don’t think the content merited it.

Ok... After finishing the game I can say is a solid 8.5 or 9/10. It is one of the best DC movies and clearly way better then the previous one.

This review is very debatable, and I'm being nice.

That being said, my respect to Joss Whedon, because making a 2 hour movie with this kind of content is far from being easy.

If Zack needs a 4 hour runtime to make a solid movie he is screwed. And the people in charge need to know what the hell do they want, otherwise this will always be a mess..

As a person who thought the first Justice League movie was average the Snyder Cut was amazing. It allowed enough time to give each character some depth, especially Cyborg, and never felt like it dragged on.

Abjectly clueless review.. This movie is Epic and the only way it should be watched! Your review is largely based on your generation which has a short attention span thanks to growing up attached to a smart phone. You’ve likely never read comic books and have no appreciation for character and story development. Sorry, but this movie is amazing and easily better than the original.
