Another cookbook MMO

User Rating: 7.5 | Rift (2011) PC
Rift is just another cookbook MMO. Go there, kill this many, deliver that, then go there and kill this many more. The setting is different but everything else is similar to games like WOW, Aion, LOTRO, GW. If you just want more of the same, have at it. If you're looking for something really different you'll have to wait for upcoming games like Star Wars The Old Republic, or The Secret World, The Agency, etc... the real new class of online games.

Rift is even easier to level in than most of the other MMOs, so that may attract some. But they didn't do anything really new or original. A really original MMO might have had true stealth, where you solve entire quests in stealth mode, or negotiate with an enemy or collaborate with an ally instead of just killing x many and moving on. The magic is not very innovative either. RPG games like Two Worlds (1 and 2) have much better magic than Rift. There is no real storyline that makes a difference either. You can play the entire game without reading any dialogue other than knowing where to go next. The are no choices in the game that make any difference. Bottom line: more of the same.
