It lacks polish, but it has a goofy charm that grows on you.
User Rating: 7.5 | Rising Zan: The Samurai Gunman PS
I love playing the game Rising Zan. It has questionable control, an inconsistent camera, mediocre graphics with pop-up and clipping, and various other faults that are somewhat unacceptable for a game that came out four years into the Playstation's lifespan. Despite all of the flaws that the game has, it's a still a lot of fun to play. It's kind of like the Evil Dead or Toxic Avenger of video games. The production values are minimal, but the creators managed to imbue the game with a great tongue-in-cheek sense of humor that makes up for many of it's design flaws. As the protaganist of the game, your character is an Old West hero who is equally adept with both a six-shooter and a samurai sword. A ridiculous concept (which has influenced Atlus' Samurai Western) but it works because it offers a unique style of gameplay that mixes the gameplay of Bushido Blade with a standard third person shooter. The best part of the game is that you can earn bonus points by dispatching enemies in a stylish manner. These are called "sexy points" , which is befitting a character who refers to himself as the "Super Ultra Sexy Hero". How can you not love a game like that? For everyone out there who loves the Toxic Avenger, Repo Man, or the Evil Dead (or Bruce Campbell's cult comedy wester series, Briscoe County Jr. for that matter) give this game a try. It's not the best made game out there, but it'll offer the same kind of fun you would have watching some low-budget "B" movie. Take a break from Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, and Gran Turismo, and all of those other "A" games, and take some time to enjoy the simple delights of a silly and fun "B" title like Rising Zan, Samurai Gunman (the Super Ultra Sexy Hero)
