It is my first day on the Dorgenark, well to be honest, it’s my first time being a space pirate. The ship is beautiful, made by the developers at Level 5, who have a track record of making great RPGs such as Dragon Quest VIII and Dark Cloud 2. The ride so far has been beautiful, but will it going to be great as my previous Level 5 journeys? Not all the constellation in the galaxy can foresee that.

August 1st 3034 C.F.:

We have a new crew mate on the ship. His name’s Jaster Rogue, the legendary Desert Claw supposedly. We picked him off of the desert planet Rosa, where he was working almost as pretty much a slave. He gives me this whole save the universe vibe. Like when he came onto the ship I felt that great wheels of fate had been set into motion and this one moment will decide whether or not the galaxy will destroyed or be saved by the actions of this young man. Either this is a very derivative story or it could just be the whiskey talking. Arrr… me mateys… Everyone is quite likable though I don’t think I’ll be making life long friends with them. They all seem to fit this standard cookie cutter RPG models, though Deego is a half-dog, half-human bad ass… Arrr….

I failed to notice how beautiful the Dorgenark is, even though it’s running on fairly old technology. It’s crafted out of a sort of cell-shaded material that gives this whole experience an anime look. And the crew! My do they look beautiful, with the high attention to detail and the multiple costumes they can adorn. However, I wonder why the women are scantily clad for space travel? It’s quite cold up here.

The ship has an alright sound system, I mean for a late generation game. the music fits the areas we travel to and the sword slashes do sound real, but it doesn’t have that BANG every pirate needs. The music is largely forgettable but, hey, we’re on a budget here and it does its job. Can’t waste our spoils on orchestral music… Ar....

Now what is it like being a pirate? Extremely repetitive action RPGish...Arrr! We’re usually doing some short range attacks, then some long range attacks and maybe if you’re daring enough, mix it up with some magic. Occasionally you will get suggestions from party members you’re not controlling to do certain commands as well as set certain in battle strategies. Though fighting is alright it’s not the most glamorous thing, especially since the encounter rate is pretty high. The item synthesis and skill learning are some of the best aspects. We got a frog that eats two weapons and combines them, and there are hundreds of combinations. Crazy frogs…

Learning moves is as easy as placing items in a grid, and opening up for pathways on your chart. Very fun… I mean arr… tis very useful on the high galaxies

Space is big right? Well there are tons of side jobs we get from time to time, such as monster hunting and alternate bosses. You can even have Mutant-Battle-Ninja-Insect competitions. With all these things to do you could spend about ninety hours in space! Arr!

The captains going to throw me overboard because he found out I got my pirates training by watching Pirates of the Caribbean from an illegal download. This is Arr… for the last time. Rogue Galaxy is a fun game, with tons of things to do for the RPG aficionado. It’s a great looking quest to partake with a deep skill and weapon system though the combat is a bit bland. It might not be as a great as Level 5’s previous efforts but it sure is a great game to play through.
