We have seen many a strategy games come and go. Some made it to the top while others somehow just didn't make the cut. Rome Total War had the right stuff to make it to the top and it had reasons for being simply an impressive and astounding game.

At first look, people might get turned away by it's historical background(I hated history), but as the saying goes, Don't judge a book by it's cover. I tell you, this game proves that saying after all. Taking a peep inside the game, you will be blown right away with it's introduction movie featuring the different factions in the game and how they fight. With this intro we get an overview of different battle tactics and essentials we need to know before engaging in a total war. You can play the Imperial Campaign to fulfill your fantasies of being emperor or Custom Game if you simply want raw action.

Rome Total War, similar to it's predecessors employs both turn-based strategy and real time battle. In short terms, you can be a cunning warlord and an economist at the same time. Of course, this task is easier said than done. As future emperor of Rome,it is your primary task to keep your citizens happy while making sure that your settlements are in good shape. Managing settlements in the early part of the game is comparative easy than in the later phase of the game. This of course is due to the fact that you just have a handful of settlements to manage. Plus, you can conquer settlements much faster than in later parts of the game since the technologies of each faction are not yet advanced. If you have enough brute force to besiege a settlement, chances are you'll be successful in doing so. But, one faction in particular might affect your progress greatly, the Senate faction. This faction will be your final force you'll have to battle if you wish to rule the world. The senate will give you missions that can supplement your needs of soldiers or gold. But beware, they will be a tough opponent. Things however get a dramatic overhaul once you have conquered more than 15 settlements. The pressure of keeping your settlements' populace happy and the development of your empire at a steady pace will get on your nerves since other factions will begin attacking you from all sides. Let's face it, you are not the only one who dreams of becoming emperor. But in the end, you will feel rather fulfilled if you manage to get through all this, looking at your empire grow from scratch to a worldwide superpower.

Real-time battles make the cut too especially when you watch thousands of troops fight one another in a bloody combat. Of course, as a general you need the necessary strategy to make your opponents lick the dust. Oftentimes, common sense is just what you need to win a battle. Of course, charging a phalanx face to face with a cavalry is suicide but charging them from the rear will literally disintegrate them and probably make them route. Charging your legion against an infantry unit that has back-up archers is definitely suicide but making them form a testudo before making an advance might do the trick.

The game also features historical battles wherein you can reenact famous battles in history. Who knows? You might be able to win the battle that Licinius Crassus didn't.

You see, being an economist and a warlord isn't exactly just a walk in the park. But if you seek a grand epic scale strategy game to put your skills to the limit, Rome Total War is the one for you!
