A clone of the Dynasty Warriors, with better graphics and gameplay...

User Rating: 7.6 | Sengoku Musou (Treasure Box) PS2
Background and story: It is suffice to say that this game is a clone of the Dynasty Warrior series where you kill into hordes of enemies and achieve your goal. Samurai Warriors (SW) takes setting in feudal Japan where war was raging and this time around, you get to play different heroes or heroines taken from Japanese history. Take Nobunaga for instance, avid gamers who have played the Onimusha series would not be unfamiliar to this name; even Samanosuke is available for play in this game. Other characters include the Ranmoru Mori which should be strictly male but appears feminine in this game. Graphics: Breath-taking introduction movie, high resolution characters, detailed character clothing, beautiful animation of sword clashing and shield bashing. Landscape design is acceptable, but could be further improved. Game play: There are several modes of game play in this game, but the main element is the "story mode" where players choose a hero of their choice and sort of starts a campaign. In each mission you will have to follow certain linear paths of action such as breach enemy defense or defend a castle, based on the number of vital events that a player successfully completes in a particular mission, it will in turn unlock certain other events. As you can see, this game stresses on "chains of effect" where one action invariably leads to a result or consequence. For example, if you fail to save your commander in a mission, you might be able to continue the campaign, but with a different story line. It is a highly flexible type of action game play. For each character that you play, there will be 2 endings based on your course of action. After the completion of a campaign you will have the chance of unlocking other characters in the story which was otherwise non playable previously. Your character levels up in terms of attack power (musou), Health points and acquire various martial skills as you progress in the game. Each character will also have an extra set of clothing after you successfully complete a campaign. This game revolves around hack and slash type of action where you dash into groups and groups of enemies and kill all the way to achieve your goal. SW has done it in a nice way as it basically improves a lot on the Dynasty Warriors game play. There are also combo attack moves where you press certain buttons in sequence and execute some really devastating attacks. Other modes of the game include "VS" where you duel against a fellow player head to head, the "Survival mode" where you have to fight to survive as long as you can and others. There is also a character editor where you can train your own hero and play the game, but the training process is painstakingly slow and difficult. Controls: Smooth and well coordinated. Most control options are similar to that of Dynasty Warriors. Background music and sound: Very grand and indulging BGM, battle tension well adjusted to the music and sound effects. Pros: Superb graphics, multiple endings and unlock-able characters, high replay-ability, very good sound effects, different modes of interesting game play, combo moves are fantastic. Cons: Another clone of Dynasty Warriors, repetitive hack and slash, senseless violence, certain stories not in line with historical fact, difficult character creation process In conclusion: An enjoyable game. If you are familiar with Dynasty Warriors, this game is for you; otherwise you might wan to rent and decide.
