Great puzzles, excruciatingly confusing combat, dreadfully distant checkpoints. Too many characters.

The puzzles are awesome, but there's no direct control over the combat sequences--you have to hit the buttons at exactly the right time or the character just stands there and dies. Over and over and over again. And once the character is injured, usually he won't move again. Also, the save points are insanely far apart. If you don't complete the sequence, and the character dies, you get knocked back to the beginning of the entire thing.
Normally I don't take games back until I've played them all the way through, but this one is going back immediately. It could be fun, because the atmosphere is great and the puzzles are wild--but the checkpoints are aggravating, having to play the same puzzles over and over again because the character dies two rooms farther down, due to missing one "x" key.
Near miss.
