It's Resident evil for kids, and it's great for everyone else.
The problem with all this was that kids under seventeen were missing out on the now-classic hit. But then THQ decided to release this game, "Scooby-Doo! Classic Creep Capers", which almost plays out like Resident Evil in every way. It's Resident evil for kids, and a great game for everyone else (especially Scooby Doo fans).
The game takes place in four levels, each one a popular episode from the long running Hanna Barbara Scooby-Doo series. In each level, you play as Shaggy and his sidekick scooby, though only controlling one of them at a time. The goal of each level is to find all the clues in each level that will reveal who the real culprit is for the crime in the level, ex. the one stealing the museum artifacts, or the one scaring away everyone at the lodge. During this process, you must avoid the common "monster" in each level, who is trying to catch Shaggy and Scooby. While doing this, you are also trying to keep away from traps the culprit may have set, which in turn lower your "Scare meter" (This games' equivalent to a life bar). Once you find all the clues, the end of the level consists of finding enough supplies for a trap and setting them up to catch the culprit, where you reveal the real identity of the masked avenger. It all plays out exactly like an episode of Scooby-doo, staying very true to the show.
The gameplay is reminiscent of any other Survival Horror game, mainly due to the fixed camera angles. While this helps re-create the shows' mysterious settings and themes, it in-turn adds frustration to the controls. You may run right into a trap without knowing because it is off-camera, or even change directions when the camera changes, causing you to run right into the monster you are fleeing from and losing your last health. As you can see, this can be frustrating. But it's nothing to stop you from playing, as you adjust to the "tank-like" controls by the second level (or right away if you're a fan of Resident Evil).
The graphics in this game are some of the best I've seen on the N64. Each monster and character looks very-much like they're supposed to compared to the TV show While the textures can sometimes be quite bland, the attention to detail makes up for it by recreating each setting from the show to a T. The character animations for Shaggy and Scooby are fantastic, and they even included Shaggy's trademark walk (Scooby-doo fans know what I'm talking about here).
The game also sounds great. Each sound effect will take you on a nostalgia trip back to the TV show, because every effect is taken right from Scooby-Doo. The shaking sound when they're scared, the "boing" effect when Scooby jumps into Shaggy's arms, is all there. The score is reduced only for the lack of voice overs, save for Shaggy screaming "Help!" when he dies.
The Value is poor. The game only took me about 6 hours to play through, and you will only play through it maybe twice at the most. There is also a real lack of challenge, excluding the fourth (last) level. But it's still great fun through the first time, and hard-core Scooby Doo fans will definitely play though multiple times just to experience the familiar places once again.
In the end, you're left with a good, stable game that shouldn't be missed by any fan of Hanna Barbara cartoons, or anyone that's looking for a good, fun Nintendo 64 game.
