A game built for fun, and feels fun the whole way through!
First thing I want to get out of the way is that this game is advertised as a movie tie-in game, but after playing many hours of hardcore pummeling I can say it is based more off of the graphic novel than the movie. An example of this is that all the characters resemble their comic look in sprite styled fashion, and even the first evil ex-boyfriend is dark skinned like the graphic novel rather than white like in the movie. So it is really not a movie game, just advertised as one.
Gameplay-
The gameplay in Scott pilgrim is classic old-school beat 'em up action. Up to four people can play together, but there is no drop in co-op. You have your basic light and heavy attack, a block (which most classic beat 'em up games lacked) a jump, and two special moves, one of which has a support character pop up to help you. The game mostly involves you pummeling countless enemies to proceed through the linear stages. Stages mostly move from left to right and are accessed via a world map. You collect money and experience points as you defeat enemies. Experience points will allow you to obtain new moves, and you can use money to raise your characters 4 different stats at certain shops. All the character data of your character is saved to your profile automatically. The game is much more fun when playing with more people however it does lack an online mode. If you have people you can play with nearby this will be an enjoyable experience worth more than the price tag you pay for it. If you are by yourself it will be an average experience but worth the $10 dollars you payed for.
Graphics-
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is styled in an old school 16 bit look. with nice quality sprites and and well animated frames. The game is always running smoothly as your taking on the action, however there are some noticeable slow down when pausing the game or entering any other menu options. This does not detract from the experience but it is there. The colors are very vibrant and fresh really giving a feel for how the graphic novel would look in color. The game gives each player a HUD at the top of the screen giving you the details you need to know on action all in smooth classic styled fashion. Its just looks good, and a hat to all that shows graphics like these should be more encouraged in game design.
Music and Sound-
The sound effects are definitely on the dot with the theme of the game, 8-bit crashes and punching noises, menu clicks, and more all fit perfectly. The music is incredible, but not for everyone. To some it may hurt the ear to hear the 8 bit music, but most will be fine with it. It is amazing and these tunes will be stuck in your head for hours after playing. They are catchy and memorable.
Replay Value-
This game will last long as long as you have people to play with, and even to the point where it may be one of those games you go back and play with your friends every now and again years down the road. If your going solo it may only last a few playthroughs before it gets stale on you. At the moment of this review there is no online mode, but if it is added this should be a game to pick up, period.
Result-
Overall this is a must play, and a tribute to classics. You will enjoy it from start to finish. Having people to play with amplifies the experience and will really make it shine.
