These games deserved so much more...

User Rating: 5.6 | Sega Smash Pack GBA
I originally bought the Sega Smash Pack just to relive Sonic Spinball - and fortunately for me this is the one game that was done mostly right. However, replaying Ecco and Golden Axe has left me dissappointed on games I didn't realize I wanted to play again. What I mean by this is that, while I didn't originally want to replay those games, seeing how horribly they were redone on the GBA makes me pine for my old Genesis - depending on where it's packed up at and even if it still works? In any event, I find Ecco totally unplayable now just for the fact that all the familiar tunes and music have been entirely taken out except for the first level music which plays throughout the whole game. Even Golden Axe had it's music hacked in order to I guess fit all three games into this one cart. In any case, if you've played these games before, then you might be majorly hurt by their recreation on the GBA. If you haven't played the originals, then you're vastly missing out on their true potential to amaze you. Other reviews have mentioned the lack of the save state on these games and I cannot agree more. While not originally included with each game, this does not excuse this exclusion now. Limited lives and continuous play have gone the way of the dinosaur in games today - even for games that are being ported are often very generous in lives and save states. If nostalgia has made you blind (and deaf) then feel free to pick this group of games up. You can probably find a copy for around $10 and there's at least that much to be gotten out of this port. But for a fan of the games, it is an utter dissapointment.
