Somehow, this game was over-looked by many. Don't make that mistake!

User Rating: 9 | Shadow of Rome PS2
Shadow of Rome is one of the best Roman experiences you can find. With tons of gore, action and some old-fashion conspiracy, you'll find it all in this title. It truly amazes me how under the radar this game was, considering the quality and the developer was Capcom.

GAMEPLAY

The gameplay comes in two flavors: gladiator hack 'n slash as Agrippa, or stealth gameplay as Octavianus. While the stealth has it's flaws, and can get irritating at times, it does break up the mayhem rather nicely. When sneaking, you can't be hit or you'll die. You have to use your environment, including banana peels, rocks, vases, etc. to knock out guards or distract them. The AI is rather dumb in these segments, since you can just run around a corner and hide, and they'll forget all about you. Overall, they are alright, although a bit irritating at times.

The gladiator fights is where it's at. You'll run around with flimsy weapons that smash every 5-10 hits, and to get more you'll have to beg the crowd or pry them from enemies. The combat system is pretty simple, but attacks differ by direction you hit and how long you hold down attack. You can block too, and pick up shields and helmets to raise defenses. Limbs can be hacked or broken, and so can heads, and even torsos. The game is rated M for a reason, it is very brutal.

You'll also take part in chariot races, which don't last long, but are very intense while they last. Definitely another great look into Roman culture, and they are done rather well.

GRAPHICS

The graphics are pretty high-end for PS2, but nothing near HD or anything in that league. A few cinematics take place that are nice, but the standard graphics get the job done. Rome is done up nicely, and so is her soldiers and weapons. The gore is over-the-top but not too much, enough to make you smile when you hack a man's head off. SOUND

Screams and cheers sound perfect to really get you pumped up running around an arena. The sound effects of breaking bones, weapons and armor are perfect, as is the sound of blood-letting. There is music from time to time, orchestral pieces that add an epic tone.

VALUE

Not only does the game have two difficulties, you can play any fight over again from the main menu. There is also unlockables for perfectly each arena fight, adding tons of replay value. The game on normal last around 15 hours, which isn't bad for an adventure/action game.

Overall, it's hard not to like the brutality in Shadow of Rome. If you are a history fan, it will have some nice renditions that you'll appreciate. If you love hack 'n slash and God of War-style gore, it will also make you very happy. Considering the only way you can find it now is used for around $20-30, I'd have a hard time not recommending it to anyone old enough to handle some blood.
