Bizarrely Brilliant, a unique title that will be remembered for it's collasal achievement.
The concept is simple and yet surprisingly appealing in this David versus Goliath title for the Playstation 2. You take on the role of young hero Wander accompanied by his trusty steed Agro, as you navigate the vast World hunting for colossal creatures to sacrifice in order to persuade the gods to bring back a recently departed loved one, called Mono.
Graphics
The character models and environments are among the best you are likely to see from a PS2 title. Visually this game is beautiful and whether you're looking at the wide expanse of the colossi World or the brilliantly crafted monsters, you will be very pleased with the graphical standards Sony have set in SoC.
Gameplay
Don't judge this game by the concept, riding on horseback to slaughter a giant grizzly is actually unusually satisfying. Each colossi has a weak point and it is in finding these sensitive areas that is most fun as you find yourself climbing on and over monsters as big as sky scrapers. Find the monster's weak point and bring it down, then repeat.
Sound
The score is lively and gives a perfect feel for every scenario. Whether you are gripped in combat with a giant and (normally) hairy opponent or breezing through the vast landscape, your ears will be treated with a good mix of dramatic and calming melodies.
Lasting Appeal
There are sixteen colossi to hunt and take down which amounts to several hours of gameplay, which is encouraging and challenging. Some may find the concept repetitive but all is forgotten when the ambience turns dark and dramatic as you stand like a child, sword in hand ready to claim your next victim.
Overall
If you are a fan of the underdog then this game is for you. The concept may not sound ground breaking but SoC has dared to do something original and it's paid off. Hunting enormous god-like creatures with a weapon the size of a tooth pick has never been so much fun, so give it a try and you won't be disappointed.
