A Colossal Masterpiece.

It is very rare for a video game to evoke emotions and more importantly feelings in the player. Though there are many games in the market right now which have their moments of brilliance but few games come close to the emotional intensity of Shadow of the Colossus, an action adventure game for Play station 2. The game is developed by the Fumito Ueda, who was also the mastermind behind 2001’s sleeper hit ICO. The game puts you to kill 16 giant colossi so that you can bring back the love of your life. Often games like these have many monsters to kill before you go on to face the boss at the end of the level. But Shadow of the Colossus differs in this category. In the game there are no monsters at all. In fact you will hardly ever see anything alive. This gives the game its creepy atmosphere. Most of the time when you defeat the boss you often feel good but you won’t in this game. Shadow of the Colossus is perhaps the only game in history where you will often feel sad and guilty for killing these giant creatures and it is there that the emotional connection between the player and the game starts to develop. Most of the time when you approach these giant behemoths you will often see them minding their own business since they are so huge that you are like an ant to them. On the game play side it handles really well. The controls are very simple to use and master. You are basically armed with only a sword and a bow. In the beginning of the game you’ll found out that the sword your player is carrying is the only weapon which can kill those colossi but the difficult part is to figure out how to kill them. Since each of these creatures requires a different strategy in order to kill them. In the end all I can say is that this is one epic and colossal game in sheer scope and in its creator’s vision to create a powerful emotional gaming experience.
