Exquisite Sorrow

User Rating: 8.5 | Shadow of the Colossus PS2
Shadow of the Colossus is a moody and engrossing puzzle/action game peppered with moments of terror and awe. The game consists of a sequence of battles against the Colossi, often-immense beings that are half-beast, half architecture. Figuring out how to slay (or even damage) the massive creatures lends the combat an aspect of strategic puzzle solving.

The graphics are a remarkable achievement for the PS2, especially if one can take advantage of the wide-screen HDTV graphics mode. There are occasional dips in the frame-rate, and the camera sometimes proves troublesome, but the overall presentation is quite impressive.

The orchestral score adds great tension and excitement to the battles and a moody atmosphere as you seek them out on horseback.

More than anything, the game has a lonely and bleak atmosphere that excellently conveys a sense of despair mixed with dogged determination. People who like their stories to end with "and they all lived happily ever after" should probably look elsewhere for their entertainment.
