An interesting form of gameplay that will surely please many of those who are looking for a gem.
Getting to the colossi is an adventure in its own. You use your sword as a guide, like Liono uses his in Thundercats. The world is essentially barren with no cities or random enemies to fight. It does get lonely but in the same way makes the game feel epic. The world is truly amazing as you travel its distance and is beautiful through out.
The colossi are just as the name puts it, they are huge. The size of skyscrapers and tough to beat if you are playing it for the first time. It's really a puzzle game, much like Prince of Persia with each boss battle, with your goal to reach the vital points of each colossi. You must climb, jump and hang on as you try to reach your goal, and it is not as easy as I put it. There is a climbing mechanism here where you are only giving limited time to hang on until your hero gets too tired and lets go. It's an interesting addition that really makes things more interesting.
However, this game is not without its flaws. It has issues with the frame rate, where the frames are dropping like Bobby drops Whitney. It is annoying at first, especially if you are used to the typical frame rates of the games for the PS3 or the Xbox 360, but even with the poor frame rates, the game is amazing enough to let it slide.
The music really pulls you into the game when you are fighting the colossi, and only during these moments will you hear a score. The rest of the time its just nature sounds. For those of you who are into fantasy scores, you will be in for a treat with Shadow of the Colossus.
The designers have really made a first rate game that really stands out from your typical game. I have never played a game like this and it is pleasing to know that there is still some ingenuity out there. But to warn you, I had a hell of a time looking for this game in stores but I lucked out and found a copy, the original release title at that. If you happen to find it in your local game store, do yourself a favor and pick it up. It beats most of the next gen games out there in presentation and wow factor.
