The first in a classic series.

User Rating: 10 | Shenmue: Isshou Yokosuka DC
This is the most detailed and intriguing adventure game ever released. Its hero, Ryo Hazuki, is out to find and bring to justice the man who murdered his father. Ryo hones his jiu-jitsu skills and scours the environment in search of clues. Everything is functional as it would be in real life, from the vegetable aisles in the convenience stores, to the gambling machines, to the toy machines outside the shops. You can even win and collect various totems. The heart of the game, however, is its vast array of quirks and factoids related to urban life in Japan. They have everything as it would have been had you visited there in the mid-1980s. You can set the game to reflect the real weather on the dates on which the story was set. In other words, if it snowed on the day it says on the 'stopwatch,' it'll start snowing in the game. Your mom walks around the house and tells you not to leave your stuff everywhere. That's realism. Oh, and you also have to get a job, you lazy good-for-nothing.

A stirring mystery story packed with good characters and challenging twists, 'Shenmue' will etch itself in your memory as an exciting and witty game that far exceeds the standards of the genre. One of my all-time favorites.
