It still holds up, even though there are 3 newer versions. Civ IV is a big step up, but it uses lots of system resources; Civ II will run on almost any machine. After a few years of playing, you might get a wee bit bored, if you do, the map and pieces are all .gif files, many of the game files are .txt documents. You can easily customize this game, or you can purchase or download custom created content.

Choose an Historical Culture to play, and you take the place of their greatest leader. Explore a pregenerated or custom map, find good spots to found cities, then guide the production of those cities, balancing commerce and defense to build a nation. Then, negotiate with other Leaders, and trade with them, or war with them. Advance your scientific knowledge until you can build a colony ship and settle another planet to win the game.
