Well, if you like playing the same game from 15 years ago, this one is for you

User Rating: 5.4 | Sid Meier's Pirates! PC
When this game was released, I was very excited about the possibilities that Sid Meier had corrected all the annoying things from the original game. Boy, was I wrong. The only difference between this iteration and Pirated Gold for Win 95 is the graphics. The exact same problems exist.. The constant problems with the crew morale, which is idiotic, the lame ship to ship combat, and awful duels are still the same!!! Unbelievable! Problems with the crew, heck, just take on an armada and kill off half of them...problem solved. What's that you say? 12 ships in your armada? Well, guess what? You get to use ONE. I know lets duel! Shove him off the deck, and HOORAH, I win.

When compared to another game similar to Pirates!, Port Royale 2, Pirates! doesnt even come close. In Port Royale 2 you actually have meaningful, and difficult duels, you dont have the incessant whining from your juvenile crew. Ship combat is far superior because in PR2 you get use at least 5 ships of your own versus up to 5 of the enemy. Far better combat system. Like Pirates, there are random quests treasure maps etc, but Pirates! handles it in a very simplistic, insulting to the intelligence way. The other problem I have with Pirates is that the game is severely limited. Your character ages at an incredible rate that disrupts the game, just when you're starting to enjoy yourself. I dont know. I just cant recommend this iteration of Pirates over the previous version. The gameplay is poor, but the graphics are beautiful. I just think Sid needed to sit down and do more with the game. I'm left feeling empty and very disappointed.
