Silent Hill 2 (SH2) marks a huge leap in graphics from the 1st game. Silent Hill despite it's slow pacing does a good job demonstrating the PS2s graphical and sound capabilities...especially if you have a serious sound receiver/system. Of course that was back then. After revisiting the game just a month ago, the feelings are still the same. The game ages well over time. I've finished this game a few years ago (2002) and still remember some of the experiences my roommate and I had playing the game. The story is not too original but the way it is told...is. The characters (especially during the CGI cutscenes) have a very eerie yet evil look to them. Their movement, voice, and other small details seem deliberate to make your back hairs stand during the most silent times (no pun intended). As you progress through the later parts of the game, you'll experience some moments where you'll walk down hallways and stairways forever reminding you that things can get more evil than where you were. The puzzles within the game are also very good and not forced. You'll not find a puzzle that doesn't seem out of place. In some cases, you'll feel that it helps break up the pacing of the game and not ruin it - which is one of the reasons why I've liked this series since the series debuted. The puzzles are also well integrated into the story and it leaves you with a satisfying sense of accomplishment. Of course, it helps when you're not given a time limit . Silent Hill also brings back that famous transceiver/radio which gradually gets louder as you approach some seriously disturbing figures you'll come across in the game. Some even go as far as mocking some famous religious paintings or stained glass windows. There are parts of the game where things get really graphic in the environment and it is definitely not for the squeamish. SH2 is a different type of game for the different type of gamer. It doesn't try to show off with a bunch of pop-up and scare style that is reminiscent of the Resident Evil series. Instead it tries to get in your head. Silent Hill 2 does just that and more. I guarantee it. Just make sure you don't sleep alone after you're done playing...especially if your bed is in front of mirrors. Writing this review gives me goosebumps. It's that good. Play at your own risk. radcastro.com
