Silent Hill made it to the PSP, and did a good job capturing what makes it a great series.

User Rating: 8 | Silent Hill: Origins PSP
Silent Hill: Origins takes you once again to the mysterious town of Silent Hill to discover what happened first. In the game you play as Travis; a lonely trucker with a troubled past. He is drawn to the town of Silent Hill for reasons you will uncover as the story continues.

The story in Origins is one of the best on PSP, and will help fans of the series put together the puzzle that is Silent Hill. However, while it is immersive and well put together, it does not take too long to complete and one play through should take 6 – 8 hours. Luckily, there is good replay value as there are different endings to complete, and items to unlock that will make the next play through easier.

The graphics are very good for a PSP; the lighting effects are very impressive, and the grainy film-like view that you have is quite immersive and really sucks you in. The frame rate never shutters even when you fight the huge monsters that populate the town. On the topic of monsters, they are as disturbing in appearance as ever; one that stands out is a huge four legged creature with its head hanging in backwards in the middle of its body. Once you hear the cry of this thing and turn to see it chasing you, it will really make you want to get as far away as possible.

The gameplay is also very enjoyable and feels very similar to other Silent Hill games. However, there is still no way to avoid damage from regular attacks, which is a little annoying epically if you are running low on health; although, some attacks force you into a mini-game where you can avoid taking a lot of damage. The controls can be a little strange to newcomers, but are fairly standard to fans, but adapting is no problem at all.

Overall, Silent Hill: Origins is a great game. Any fan of Silent Hill will love having this on the go, but Origins may not appeal to newcomers. But if you do decide to try this game, be sure to have noise canceling headphones and wait until it is dark for the truly immersive and disturbing experience.
