I recently played Skies of Arcadia for the Sega Dreamcast and was pleasantly surprised. Finding the game was the most difficult part. (You'd be hard pressed to find it for under $60 used these days) The game harkens back to what RPGs once were, and you can tell that the developers put a lot of love into the creation of this masterpiece.
Gameplay: 8.5 The battles are very traditional turn-based. At first, I was a bit turned off, but the complexity builds. First of all, each of your party members gets points that build up as the battle progresses. There is a lot of strategy that can be applied here. Once your bar is built up, you can unleash regular attacks, magic attacks, and even special attacks. There are also ship battles that occur frequently. This mixes things up nicely.
Sound: 9 The music in this game is very good. There is no voice acting, however, their are sound effects and great musical scores that just fit the tone of the game perfectly.
Graphics: 8 The graphics look very good for a sega dreamcast game circa 2000. The characters are 3D and there is great enemey variety. The game takes place in the air and there are many beautiful locals to visit.
Story: 9. The story of this game is fantastic. You play as a young, aspiring air pirate named Vyse who meets a fallen princess named Fina. You realize that the baddies in the game (a corrupt nation) is attempting to collect crystals for world domination. There are twist and turns, and, despite it being a bit cliche, the story really works well and the characters are extremely likeable. There is not annoying characters that make you roll your eyes. Honestly, I loved every character. The main antagonist, Ramirez, is pretty bad ass too.
Replay Value: 9. I put over 50 hours into the game, and that was simply the story. You get a lot for your money with this game, and, as previously mentioned, the developers put a lot of energy into the making of this game. There is a large world to explore and a great story to discover.
Overall: 8.6. This game is a must play for RPG fans. Well worth the $60 dollars I spent.
