If you love sniping, this is your game!

User Rating: 8 | Sniper Elite XBOX
Sniper Elite is a great game that may wear on the nerves of the impatient. For me, the best part of this game was the dynamic slow motion kills. If you love to snipe then you will find enjoyment in shooting a fatal shot and watching it from dynamic slow-motion angles as the bullet blows a chunk of your target’s flesh off. A lot of my kills looked pretty gruesome (quite a few of my targets can forget about ever having kids)! You can even change the options so the sniping is more realistic. However, the sniper rifles in this game kind of blow since the range on them feels so limited. And like a true sniper you may have to sit for a while in one spot just to get a solid shot at a target. This waiting may turn off some players that like games to stay fast paced. The enemy A.I. is pretty good and gets tougher as you progress through the game. They are smart enough to know when to run and they will even try to flank you. The ambient sound makes the game feel a bit like Medal of Honor, which is a plus. You can hear the enemies chatter as you’re closing in for the kill (or vice versa) for added intensity. You really get the feel that you are there.

The lists of deficiencies although small, keep this game from reaching perfection.
Sniper Elite contains glitchy/buggy programming that tends to become irritating in the midst of a heated battle. For example: I stopped a convoy by planting a tripwire grenade in the middle of a path I knew they were going to travel. The grenade stopped them dead in their tracks and they sat there like sitting ducks. To finish them I got in the prone position a good distance away (in the game probably 30 ft.) to snipe their gas tanks. When I shot the gas cap I blew myself up also! Other time I was even closer but had no problem. Why now? Well, needless to say it sucked that I had to start that part of the mission over when I was so close to the end of the mission. Its dumb programming errors like that that take away from the entire game experience. I also had a problem with the map at times being inaccurate. The map, for example, will mark a highpoint but you may find there is no way to access it. This type of problem only occurred a few times thankfully. The visuals are only average when compared to the current generation of games. Some of the mission objective can pose a problem if you follow the game’s directions. Then again this may not be a real negative. I just personally have a problem with doing stupid things like snipping from a really bad position where direct hits are next to impossible. Thank god that most of the objectives allow flexibility.

The Good: fun sniping, good enemy A.I., flexible objectives

The Bad: Glitches, plain graphics, incorrect map

Neutral: Why is the X button used only in one mission towards the end of the game? What a waste of controller mapping.

FINAL VERDICT: A good sniper-like experience, if you have the patience. Bland visuals, program glitches, and swinging frustrations keep it from being a contender in the battle for top WWII shooter.
