User Rating: 9.8 | SOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALs PS2
SOCOM 2 is without a doubt the best PS2 shooter game availible. The missions are fun and this game has a lot of replay value. Especially if have a broadband internet connection and a network adapter. If you are going to play online I wouldn't play without a USB headset. It would but nice to have one for single player as well, but it doesn't take much away from the experience. The single player for this game is very fun. You have four different world regions that your missions take place. The four locals are Brazil, Russia, Algeria, and Romania I believe. Each of the four locals has 3-4 missions which take about 30-45 minutes to complete. There are no save points in the missions. In each mission you are given a few primary objectives which will have you doing various things such as capturing terrorist and planting demolitions. There are secondary objectives as well, some of which you'll have to figure out for yourself. For example in one mission you can listen on a conversation between two terrorists. These objectives are not required, but will help out your mission grade. After each mission you are given a grade based on your accuracy, stealth, objectives completed, and teamwork. In each mission you will have three squads mates who will help you through the missions. You can give these guys various commands and even select their weapon choices before the mission. This is where you might want that USB headset. You can use it to give commands the your squads mates, otherwise you just hit circle and select the command which pauses the game. The single player mode has a decent amount of replay value. You can unlock new weapons by beating the game on different difficultes or beating the missions for one region. This is quite rewarding because there are tons of weapons to unlock. You are also able to unlock characters for online play. Online line play is most enjoyable part of this game and doesn't really get old. I myself have spent probably 2,000 hours playing online. SOCOM in my opion is the best online game for the PS2 and is very user friendly. Once you get online there is a menu. On this menu you have a friends list, clan, briefing room, invitations, autoplay, clan rankings, player rankings, and options. You will never really need to use autoplay or clan rankings. Invitations is simply where you go to accept clan invites. The clan is to check to see where your clan is or look at their/your stats. The friends list allows you to send friend invites, accept them, or just check where they are. Under options you can change your taunts, which is very fun and allows you to be creative. You can also block people who might be harassing you. Briefing rooms is where you go the find a server. You can choose a server based on region or rank. Inside the servers are the actual rooms you can join. You can also choose to make your own room if you like. You will find many different types of rooms; tryout rooms, shotgun rooms, sniping rooms, pistols rooms, respawn rooms, and rooms with all types of maps. SOCOM 2 features 22 playable maps, 10 of which where availible on the first SOCOM. The maps vary in size, but they are all fairly large and detailed. You can have up to 16 people in each room, 8 playing as SEALs and 8 playing as terrorists. Spectators can also watch the two teams. You will want a headset to communicate with your teammates. There are five different types of online play, which include Breach, Demolition, Suppression, Escort, and Extraction. Breach has the SEALs trying to enter the terrorists' base and plant a bomb. If the SEALs fail the plant the bomb in the given amount of time they will lose. Demolition is similar, but both teams have a base. In the middle of the map a bomb is placed and can be taken to either sides' base to be destroyed. Suppression must be won by killing everyone of the opposing team. In escort the seals must either escort the VIPs to an extraction or keep one of them alive until the round is over. Extraction is similar, but instead of the SEALs starting with the VIPs/hostages the terrorist do. The SEALs try to get control of them and extract them, while the terrorist try to prevent from doing so. Each game has a number of rounds and each round has a time limit. The round usually only last 5-6 minutes. Lets say the room has 11 rounds, one of the two teams must win 6 rounds to win the game. If you are a fan of shooting games, then you can't miss out on this game. Simply a must own game.
